00:02Running a bar on Hobart's waterfront, Dinesh has a front row seat to Australians' changing
00:08drinking habits.
00:10There has been night where you have absolutely no space on your floors.
00:15Dance floor is packed, everyone's having fun, everyone's dancing around.
00:19You can't really see any empty tables, but the bar is not busy.
00:24When the owners of seven prominent Hobart bars and pubs went into administration earlier
00:30this week, their director said changing consumer habits were partly to blame for the abrupt
00:37closures.
00:38So, has the typical night out changed?
00:41Some pub goers definitely think so.
00:44Where are the young people?
00:45Like, there are no young people here, and that's what's sad.
00:48It used to be down this side, this end of town, there was a lot of people every night, Friday,
00:52Saturday.
00:53Now it's sort of, one of those nights is usually pretty big and the other one's pretty dead,
00:57so I think people are picking the day of the week they choose to go out.
01:01For those out on the town, there's one key culprit.
01:05I can ask how much that was, 15 bucks for a f***ing beer.
01:08It feels like going out and getting some drinks feels much more like a luxury than it, I think,
01:15used to.
01:15It's so easy to add up every drink you buy and every meal, especially when like every
01:20one of those drinks is a bit more expensive than it used to be.
01:22Some drinkers say they've adopted new habits to avoid waking up to a drained bank account.
01:29You sort of look for the specials a little bit.
01:31As young people, something like pre-gaming, you know, you drink at home, you drink with
01:35alcohol that you buy from a bottle store because it's cheaper.
01:38Pre-drink.
01:39No, you've got to go at least have a few beers at home before you go out, otherwise it's
01:43an absolute bloody piss take, isn't it?
01:45While customers increasingly consider their options, for venues every drink mixed or poured
01:51matters more than ever.
