00:00We got that place to call, we got that place to call, we got that place to call, come on.
00:06Hey, I'm Gavin Rostow.
00:15For more than 30 years, I've been releasing records and traveling the world with my band, Bush.
00:21What you don't get from my music is that I love to cook.
00:24I'm pretty much self-taught. I watch what I can and learn from the best.
00:29Amazing.
00:31My love of cooking has kept me grounded and connected to friends and family.
00:36Now I get to indulge my passion by inviting some extraordinary people over for dinner.
00:41And we get to see, whilst we're all different, there's inspirations and the similarities.
00:46We all have our stories. We all have our challenges.
00:49This is about sharing their journey.
00:57Tonight, my guest is Serena Williams, the Queen of Tennis.
01:0123 Grand Slam singles titles, 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, 2 Grand Slam mixed doubles titles, and 4 gold medals.
01:09She's a true cultural icon, and I can't wait to cook for her and try to understand how someone achieves
01:16that much.
01:17I met Serena so many years ago because of my crazy love affair with tennis.
01:22She would turn out that she was a fan of the band, of Bush, and I couldn't believe it because
01:26I didn't really expect it.
01:26So that's when I first met her.
01:28I love being a mom.
01:30You thought I was born to be a tennis player. I was born to be a mom.
01:32Really?
01:33It's a little wild. It's seasoned really well.
01:36The only music I don't like is, like, techno. I just can't do the oots, oots, oots, oots, oots, oots.
01:43Constantly, I'm so excited to be with Serena tonight.
01:45And the way that I would feel the most satisfied about it is that she has a great time, and
01:51she loves the food, and she loves the questions.
01:54We learn from her. Like, I want to learn from her.
01:58She knows things that I wish I understood.
02:00Beautiful, strong woman, beautiful, strong mother, great wife, great best friend.
02:07Tonight's menu could be really good for Serena just because it has a combination of everything that she asked for
02:13without directly asking me for it.
02:15Serena gave me a really short list. It was pretty funny. It was tacos, chicken, cake, no beef, and healthy.
02:22We started with a warm tomato salad. Some tomatoes are confit in olive oil, while others are left uncooked.
02:28French vinaigrette, some lemon creme fraiche, edible flowers, all served with a romaine lettuce that acts as a spoon.
02:35Then we got some croup of fish with an al pastel glaze, charred pineapple, and an avocado mousse, a kind
02:41of deconstructed fish taco.
02:43Without the taco because I made her a roast chicken with a masala jus and fries.
02:49Then, a honey cake with a matcha creme anglaise to finish it all off.
02:54Don't mess Serena's cake up. Come on out.
02:57The tomato salad is inspired by a friend of mine, Dominique Crenn, a three-Michelin star chef.
03:04I forgot two important things on that list. No tomato, no avocado.
03:08Oh, my God. Kill me twice.
03:13Do you think Serena will be on time? Just the fact she's turning up is genius. I'll wait days.
03:23Is it you?
03:28Chef G. Smells good out here.
03:32This is a garlic flower.
03:35I have a little herb garden out at the back.
03:37Oh, my God.
03:39By the way, thank you so much for being here because that's so incredible for me and for us.
03:43It honestly worked out because I happened to be here and I just drove up.
03:46It's the most incredible gift you give us. Thank you so much.
03:49What's it like 2.0? Like, now you're not playing? Do you miss that?
03:54I do miss it. I think it would be weird if I didn't miss it because I've done it my
03:58entire life.
03:59But it's nice. I love doing what I do now with my businesses and just being a mom.
04:07How often do you hit? Obviously, I need to know how often you hit, you know?
04:10Not as much as you.
04:12You really take tennis seriously, huh?
04:14No, but it's fun.
04:16You know what's great about it is that it's just Tom Waits said that thing about the way you do
04:20anything is the way you do everything.
04:21No, but you're lying to people right now because you're very intense with tennis.
04:27My kid, we're in the bathroom, like men do. We're like chatting to her as we're doing, taking the moment
04:33before the game.
04:34I said, what's the most important thing about sport?
04:36And he goes, and he's only 10. He goes, have fun.
04:39I said, no, be intense. If you're intense, no one wants to deal with that.
04:43That's why I'm saying you're just not being honest right now. You're very intense.
04:47I mean, I obviously am intense in tennis, but I don't get to hit as much because I'm so busy.
04:52Right.
04:53Yeah.
04:54I remember I saw those lovely signs that your husband put, the goat.
04:57Oh, the moat.
04:58The moat.
04:59The moat when we were driving down Tinley Wells.
05:01That's so beautiful.
05:02No, I love being a mom. I was definitely born to be a mom.
05:05If you thought I was born to be a tennis player, I was born to be a mom.
05:07Really?
05:08I absolutely, I thrive.
05:10Right.
05:10I really believe in communicating in a loving way.
05:13Mm-hmm.
05:13And I don't know. I'm just, like, completely different from my parents. I mean, my parents
05:17are great. Like, I wouldn't trade it in for anything, even the way I grew up.
05:21Do you think we do things exactly the opposite?
05:23No, I do things, a lot of opposites.
05:25Right.
05:25But then, like, for instance, when I was growing up, my dad always made us, like, listen to songs
05:29in the car. Not all the time.
05:31Right.
05:32But sometimes we would listen to, like, learning songs, like whether they were math songs.
05:36And then we always had to listen to, like, French tapes.
05:38How amazing is your dad?
05:40Right?
05:40Looking back, I, like, had this math song that I wanted to play for Olympia when she was
05:45younger.
05:46And I was like, oh, my God, I'm just like, my dad.
05:48I could have dinner just alone about her dad.
05:51What conviction he had.
05:52How did he know that?
05:54How did he just decide, I'm going to teach my kids tennis?
05:56No history of tennis for any of them.
05:58The story is just unbelievable.
06:00It just, it just blows me away that, like, I don't understand how your dad or you tell
06:05me.
06:06What made him decide that you guys should be?
06:08It was a way out of Compton.
06:09It was a way out.
06:11That was it?
06:11Yeah.
06:11I think it was just a way out.
06:13He grew up in Louisiana, or as he says, Lursiana.
06:17And then he came to California.
06:20And then he set his roots here.
06:22And then he had us.
06:24And then he watched film and taught himself tennis.
06:27It's just, you and I understand how hard that is.
06:31Even to this day, he's like, Mika, he calls me Mika.
06:34Mika, you should go and hit, or you should do this.
06:37Or, you know, his whole life is tennis.
06:40Like, that's his life.
06:41And it's so crazy, because he wasn't, he didn't grow up around it.
06:44Nobody in Louisiana, Shreveport, Louisiana, was playing tennis.
06:48Right.
06:48It's this culture that was in Compton, that was in Los Angeles, that was in, like, Long Beach,
06:53of a lot of African Americans who played a lot of tennis.
06:58And he somehow was in that culture.
07:01And it's this really cool story that no one really knows about.
07:05And, because we used to go to these parks, and there used to be so many black people playing tennis.
07:09Like, so many.
07:10And they were a lot older.
07:11They were, like, my dad's age.
07:12Some people were a lot older than my dad.
07:14And they just loved tennis.
07:17And it was just this culture of just us playing tennis.
07:21And, I don't know, my dad found that culture once he taught himself tennis.
07:25And he was better than everybody else.
07:28But, yeah, it was kind of fascinating.
07:30It's just unbelievable.
07:31It's different culture, because, like, I try and tell my kids stuff.
07:34I'm the last person they want to hear about things from.
07:40Roger once said that his sons, he tried to tell them what to do and how to play tennis.
07:47And they were like, we don't really respect your people.
07:52Basically, they weren't listening to him.
07:54And he said this in an interview once.
07:56And I was watching this interview, and I'm like, this is crazy.
07:59Like, how does he's who he is?
08:01And the kids aren't even listening.
08:02And I knew from that point on, I didn't have kids yet.
08:05But I knew from that point on, if I ever had kids, what to expect.
08:09They don't realize it until they're older.
08:11And even me as a kid, I didn't realize a lot of stuff until I was older.
08:14Their view and how much, you know, genuinely they care.
08:17You don't really understand that.
08:19They just beat it in you.
08:20You just never understand how much your parents truly love you.
08:23And so, I mean, I think there's a point that we do all figure it out.
08:26But it's definitely later in life.
08:28You know, what you have is this incredible structure,
08:31which makes you into such a great person.
08:33Like, honest and straightforward and strong.
08:36And that, it does, it feels like it comes from that upbringing.
08:42It's so strong.
08:42Yeah, and it's funny, because we didn't have a lot, but we had that.
08:46And sometimes it's better to have that than have a lot, right?
08:49And so, we start out, and we're still very close.
08:52And I have to say, like, I would rather have what I had.
08:55And I feel so blessed, because you're right, so many people don't have that.
08:58Right.
08:59And I feel blessed that we were able to have that.
09:02It's all a journey.
09:04Want to go eat some food?
09:05I do.
09:07I'm just going to fire this up.
09:09This isn't fair.
09:11Don't look at this bit.
09:12Okay.
09:13I got to step up my games.
09:15My kids are suffering at home.
09:20Welcome back.
09:21I'm making a dish I hope Serena loves.
09:24Serena transcends tennis.
09:26She just represents something about crossing divides and crossing bridges and opening doors.
09:31Showing people that the status quo is not how it's going to be.
09:35I mean, what is it even like being Serena?
09:37Like, I have so much respect and admiration and love for you.
09:41I just was thinking, what I was thinking about, what am I going to talk about?
09:44I was like, oh, I know.
09:46What's it like being you?
09:48I have two lives.
09:49Like, I have my business life, because I have a venture company.
09:52So I do a ton of work in that.
09:54And then I have the mom life, where I volunteer a lot.
09:58So I'm always at my daughter's school volunteering.
10:01Oh, yeah?
10:01Yeah, I do.
10:02I love it.
10:03You can't do sports day.
10:04That's not fair.
10:05They have a sports day here where you run against the moms.
10:07They did.
10:08They did have a sports day.
10:09A win's a win.
10:10I mean, it is.
10:11And they're like, tug of war, join in.
10:13I refuse to join in.
10:14I was like, this is not fair.
10:16I'm not going to join in.
10:17But it's fun.
10:18I love it.
10:20And I love cooking.
10:21I cook.
10:22I try to cook all my meals for my kids.
10:24Not all of them.
10:25I cook taco Tuesdays, and I cook Mondays.
10:28Sometimes I cook Thursdays or Fridays, if I feel like it.
10:31Can you go out to eat in Florida?
10:34That's the only good, I mean, that's the only draw about what I am.
10:37How could you say that?
10:37Could you?
10:38Oh my gosh.
10:38Florida's amazing.
10:40They have such a good eating scene.
10:42I love it.
10:43I mean, I do live in a small town, but with like at least five good restaurants.
10:48But it's nice.
10:48And I love my small city life.
10:51It's great.
10:51You know, I get out of the bustle and hustle of LA, you know?
10:55And it's just a relaxed zone.
10:58And I love it.
11:00How can I distract you?
11:02No, you're not distracting me at all.
11:03I want to just get some nice flowers for you to mask the tomatoes.
11:06Oh, wow.
11:07If we were to do like a celebrity cooking show, you would beat me.
11:13I mean, I'm a good baker, but I don't cook fast.
11:17And I just, I take my time and I don't use those tweezers.
11:21So you would definitely take me out.
11:24It's just a tweezer.
11:26Did you take like a cooking class?
11:28Yeah.
11:28Just messed around.
11:30Bought some tweezers.
11:31That's what I'm missing.
11:34There you go.
11:35Take those with you.
11:37I am official.
11:39I now know how to cook.
11:42The kids would be like, what's up?
11:44How come the food got so crazy?
11:46It's because of these tweezers.
11:47It was delivered with the tweezers.
11:49How is everything going in all those companies?
11:52Is it fun being a business woman?
11:53It is.
11:54I love investing.
11:55You know, I've been investing for so long.
11:57And then I started investing a lot in women and people of color,
12:00because less than 2% of all VC money was going to either women or people of color.
12:042%?
12:06Less.
12:06About 1%?
12:07Exactly.
12:08That's crazy.
12:09Yeah.
12:09So we don't only invest in women.
12:11We invest in everyone in general.
12:13But we invest a lot in women.
12:15And we invest a lot in people of color.
12:17And we invest in great companies.
12:19And there's a lot of unicorns in our portfolio.
12:21What are you most excited about?
12:23What's happening?
12:24For me, I love fintech.
12:26I love business, B2B.
12:27I love SaaS companies.
12:29I call them really unsexy stuff that are returns to fun.
12:33They're the things behind the scenes that runs.
12:36Like, I don't invest in the oven.
12:37I invest in the programming behind the oven.
12:39That's what I like to invest in.
12:40Not like the pretty stuff.
12:46That's my biggest weakness is my plating.
12:49That's homemade.
12:52Yeah, yum.
12:54This looks really good.
12:55This is classy.
12:56Well, we're standing up just doing it like...
12:58Oh, so I eat it with this?
12:59Yeah.
12:59The healthiest taco in the world.
13:04Oh, yeah.
13:08You see all these amazing, classical, beautiful art.
13:11But I've never seen anyone really that looks like me.
13:14For me, and what I choose to have on my walls,
13:17is someone that looks like my daughter.
13:29This looks really good.
13:31This looks classy.
13:32Well, we're standing up just doing it like...
13:34Oh, so I eat it with this?
13:34Yeah.
13:35The healthiest taco in the world.
13:47oh wow i'm going in again that really good it's good there's a lot of flavors
13:54what is it that i'm looking for i love the warm tomatoes
14:00so you love art do you get up at like miami basel at miami in our basel miami is super
14:07fun
14:07who are your favorite artists so i collect a lot of african-american artists because it's important
14:11for me for my girls to see themselves on the wall and so yeah because when i went to like
14:17the museum
14:18or say and like all these places you see all these amazing classical beautiful art but i've never seen
14:24anyone really that looks like me sometimes you'll see just one person so yeah i love artists like that
14:30what's that like the feeling of like being alienated like that yeah that's a good question i think in
14:36society we grew up to a point where we're so used to it that we don't really think about it
14:42and it's
14:43it's a normal right you're used to seeing monet's and all these other amazing work by the way um but
14:49nothing represents you again there's actually some and it's really cool to go to these museums because
14:54then they'll point out like the you know there's a black lady in this planning and this is why she
14:58was there and it's like wow it's so cool to see that um and i'm talking about super classical artists
15:04that actually have that but it's very few and far in between like in the whole museum it's probably like
15:0910 pieces but with that being said it's still it's for me and what i choose to have on my
15:14walls
15:15is someone that looks like my daughter
15:19my always my favorite thing about youth for however long i've known you which is a really long
15:24time is this incredible mixture of vulnerability and power and you have this like intoxicating mix
15:32where when you'd be like you know struggling and not happy with yourself i mean i was never happy on
15:39a question anybody that loved you which is all of us felt that with you you know we're on these
15:45like
15:45roller coaster rides with you it was steep hills roller coaster rides with steep hills i remember when
15:52you said to me when you saw the show in miami you regretted not running around i know i still
15:57think of
15:57that i still think of that i'm like you should go look you should on this time right yeah i
16:04thought
16:04of it at the open this one more of those drinks and i'm running around this time i literally thought
16:08about it i was like i may as well just do it um no it's so cool when you can
16:14change you know the way
16:17things look i think it's even more cool when you can do it and you're not trying to do it
16:21and i was never
16:22trying to do that i was just trying to be the best that i could be of course
16:27oh we're gonna do this guy this is so cool oh so this is a japanese fluke this fish oh
16:35look at
16:35his skin it's so wild oh wow yeah is that the real skin of the fish yeah yeah oh my
16:45what oil are you using grapeseed oil okay that's a good high temperature for cooking yeah i go i use
16:51mine use mine up it has to be high because of that skin huh yeah wow this is the piri
17:01piri sauce
17:03just to give it a little edge to the fish don't look at this bit okay this is just the
17:09kind of it
17:10taste good well you know best thing about cooking i gotta step up my game my kids are suffering at
17:16home i doubt it you know the funny thing is is that i do all this and i cook on
17:22this and that
17:23but i just can't go fishing i've been fishing with my kids and you throw it back they haven't got
17:27it
17:28i'm like feel relieved i'm like yeah the fish won you know i'm not i'm not a big hunter i'll
17:34take the
17:35avocado yeah i always if i fish i throw it back well i don't fish so we have that that's
17:41going to
17:41just relax for now but it's going to fire this up okay this isn't fair but this is all this
17:51is i go to
17:51i go to a plumbing store and i get this i can fix plumbing and i can take care of
17:55a pineapple
17:57and this is your fish taco without the taco that's that fish looks good i'm interested to
18:02taste that skin that skin was hard almost like prehistoric right yeah very much prehistoric
18:10you really look like you you're in your zone oh you know i just wanted to get it right for
18:14you um
18:17oh here you go with your plating again avocado lime juice and a touch of water to make it happen
18:25salt and that's it i don't know i was thinking about a fish taco thing and i was like so
18:30you do the menus
18:30yeah can you ever see that show worst cooks in america i have seen that i think i belong on
18:38that
18:38show after watching you all right cooks you have 10 seconds remaining yeah so have everything played
18:47in 10 seconds okay nine eight seven six five four four four three two one all right everyone hands up
19:03let's now take it to the judges see what they say we listen to everything such this eclectic mix of
19:10my dad liked country so i like country what what what yeah welcome back i'm making delicious dinner for
19:24serena so i was a little nervous about the skin because you made me feel it i'm so sorry and
19:32it felt
19:32like you said prehistoric so i wasn't sure how it would work it's really good better than it felt
19:44it's a little wild like it's seasoned really well thank you try it with a cream it definitely tastes
19:52better than it felt right it had that prehistoric twist to it though yeah it melted down really good
20:00well i look at you and i think of the precious situations that i've been in my life that are
20:05maybe more pressure than most people or a lot of people that don't go on stage in front of thousands
20:11of people when you walk out on those huge stages and you're going to go play what does it feel
20:17like
20:18i'm wondering if it feels that same sort of weird calm and everything else is orbiting and you're in this
20:24sort of zone it feels special there's no feeling like it in the world you know you get to go
20:29and
20:30do something like in basketball it's 10 people out there five and five football your football it's
20:35like a lot of people and our football it's even more people but tennis is just you and your opponent
20:40and that's it in singles otherworldly like it like it is i think otherworldly yeah for sure
20:48it's that feeling i make jokes when i come home i say to my kids like you know the lack
20:53of applause
20:54is really concerning me but no it's just that feeling of a crowd isn't that you really i mean you
21:05really feed to the crowd more than a lot of artists yeah i just think that's it that's the conduit
21:11that's
21:12the energy source it's like endless kryptonite and i mean you go in the crowd which is crazy i feel
21:18super relaxed i feel more relaxed than anywhere doing that and that was the weirdest thing like
21:24when you started to win and you started to get all these championships did it feel like you'd you were
21:30you found your place that you're like where you're meant to be this is what you're born i mean that's
21:36a
21:36good question i feel like so we did play tournaments we just did we stopped because we i played 10
21:42division when you were 10 years old and then that was it i didn't feel anything else my sister played
21:4710 and 12s and then he stopped because this is too much i don't know i don't feel like i
21:52don't think
21:52i ever once felt like this he didn't say like a good springboard it wasn't like because you see these
21:56these people that some people get like you know number one 16 year olds in the world never hear from
22:01again or number one junior or where are you now almost 387 in the world yeah it doesn't correlate
22:06going through to the grown-up adult version was that what it was no it was a lot of you
22:13know looking
22:13back he saw a lot of things that parents were doing to their kids and pushing them and forcing them
22:18to
22:18cheat or beating them quite frankly and he didn't want us to see that and he didn't like that parents
22:25would do that to their kids and so he didn't want us to be around it and so and i
22:29don't even know if he
22:30wanted he could be around it and not like as a adult how do you not say something you know
22:35and
22:36so i don't think he could sit there and not say anything so he just couldn't be around it tennis
22:41parents it's like stage parents right yeah dance parents we're living through the kids just forcing
22:47them like i see it every week at all the flag football games i go with my boys and all
22:52the dads
22:52who are like they're getting mad i know i have to watch myself when my daughter's in dance i'm like
22:57oh serena
22:59relax she's not gonna point her toes it is what it is relax
23:05how was it being in uh the music videos did you like that process i didn't love it i didn't
23:10dislike
23:10it but good to visit well it was good like for just that nothing else it's so funny because doing
23:16this tour i've just done people were like oh the 90s was so great well we didn't have uber you
23:22didn't
23:23move around that easy there wasn't a social media there wasn't the connection and it's so funny isn't
23:27it this world is so connected there's this sort of all these uh sinkholes of disconnection amongst all
23:34these all the supposed connection come on the 90s were were definitely better for me really yeah the music
23:42was better uh so my sister my older sister she listened to like rock music when we would grow up
23:51and it was all about mtv and then like the videos and she was rocking to it and she loved
23:56guns and roses
23:57and so we were just so young we just went with it and it was just like okay we'll just
24:03go there but
24:03then we also listen to the excitement like the kind of drive of it because you're such a physical life
24:08you've lived yeah no it's not that it's just that we listened to everything like we listened we loved
24:14like hip-hop because then that compton scene was fire back then you know it was just we had such
24:20this
24:21eclectic mix of my dad liked country so i like country what what what what yeah i love country music
24:28i love white but i like the older 90s like dwight yokum and obviously george straight and garth brooks the
24:36only music i don't like is like techno i do not like techno and i don't love house right you're
24:42like a feelings i like the feelings and i like like slow and i like fast and i like booty
24:47and i
24:47like all that stuff um but i just can't do the what would you listen to if you go on
24:53court before you
24:54play i didn't really listen to music until later when i went on court but i i love music from
25:00the 80s
25:00because i love lyrics and so one of my favorite songs to listen to is actually a song called fame
25:06from irene cara and if you listen to the words of that song it really is me basically and it's
25:12such a good song and so what's the best lyric being what touches you um she goes i'm gonna live
25:18forever
25:19baby remember my name i love that song it's such a good song i know that song yeah you it's
25:26a classic
25:26we live a life like within music where it's dependent on consistency yeah i think that consistency is
25:33everything in the same way that you got to go out and just play those games and just you can't
25:38let
25:38it drop and as a musician you have to be consistent as well right i mean that's hard because i
25:43was
25:43always thinking like when i go to shows i want to hear the music i'm so excited like i never
25:49take
25:49into account like if someone's tired or the way i see it is that people don't care about that stuff
25:54no they don't you have to they're only there for that one show and that show charlotte is the most
26:01important thing of and they waited all year to get there right yeah and so there's no let off but
26:06and it doesn't matter the size that's why i connect with sports people and that's why i connect with
26:10the chefs because i like that dependability that consistency yeah
26:24that's so tender this fish it's so tender it's really tasty it tastes like a fish like it could be
26:30the deconstructed fish taco but a very classy version and a very high-end version there you go
26:35when you come to los angeles we've got to give a little bit of showbiz a little bit of hollywood
26:39very hollywood version thank you for dinner it's my pleasure i think there's definitely more to come
26:44more yeah well i had to give you a little bit of english so i gave you a little bit
26:48of roast chicken
26:49roast chicken yeah tiny bit tiny good lord but it's just sort of like trying to make it fun for
26:58you okay okay if we have we seriously have chicken if we have chicken i'm not going to eat anymore
27:03yeah
27:04that's that was really good since we both have kids like what are you thinking about it must be
27:09hard like they grow up in an art gallery i saw your house i think it's just ultimately just teaching
27:13them
27:13humility if you want to keep it up you have to work hard welcome back i'm making a dish i
27:22hope sweet
27:22she said she liked chicken and i was do you know for me roast chicken is a really sort of
27:32integral
27:33part of sunday roast in england and would be fun to do because i want to do this you you
27:38have to get
27:38rid of the bones so you can cook it all off and use them to make this unbelievable uh sauce
27:44so when
27:45serena sits there tonight and goes oh my god this sauce is amazing we'll know the work that went into
27:51making it that way
27:59grapeseed oil high smoke point that's what's coming through that's how you get a nice sear the the my
28:04art effects is this caramelization that brown that cooking of it is what flavors
28:23looking great that's why we're here it's great
28:33all right so what are we having now this is some roast chicken
28:37and a little bit of juice i'll put a shoe here
28:44wow plating is gorgeous
28:51this is really good i'm going to leave this house in a wheelbarrow you're going to roll me out
28:58a stylish wheelbarrow hey what what um since we both have kids like what are you what are you thinking
29:05about like it must be hard like they grow up in an art gallery i saw your house
29:10well i just mean that like is it so interesting when kids grow up you know we you know we
29:15come from
29:15basically nothing or not much like you know just we come from where we come and then you make these
29:21lives and how do you navigate that right i think i'm still trying to figure that out i think it's
29:27just
29:28ultimately just teaching them humility and likability and keeping them likable right like you were saying
29:33early but also like keeping them super grateful like understanding that it takes it takes a lot of
29:43work oh listen i don't have all the answers no there's no answers but it's the right intention
29:49right i mean you've had the best training ever like with your your parents so strong
29:55loving supportive and um most people don't even have that you know most people don't have that
30:00so this is interesting this life you know you want to give them everything that you have
30:05but it's hard for them to have perspective on things it's not even their fault i mean you come
30:11to live in this crazy life and have your values super ground level um but yet you do things that
30:18are
30:19really not ground level i know that's the really challenge you know our kids get to see things that
30:24are privileged but i think the key word is privilege and let them know that it's a privilege that you
30:30get to
30:30see those if you want to keep it up you have to work hard because it's so wild there's so
30:35much power
30:35from having a vocation in life there's no power from having a sort of uh everything paid for
30:42everything paid for doesn't create power it just no right things that are paid for so you have to
30:48teach them work ethic you know nothing to do with income or status or or anything it's just do with
30:54like
30:54ability and how you can find yourself you know i feel like i'm the only one eating oh my bad
31:00i'm so
31:00sorry don't let me go that's crazy right it's so good everything is so good it's so good it's with
31:08mirin because this corn is in season so we just grated it originally i was going to do polenta for
31:13you know why i was like i love polenta oh man but this is cool i may have had a
31:18little bit i know
31:19we're like we're on we're reading the same book but we're just not on the same page uh but we're
31:25in the same chapter that's what we're in the same chapter we're in the same chapter i mean forget it
31:30i'm never cooking for you come on now don't even ask i'm asking if you come over i'm ordering take
31:37out
31:37what kind of breakfast do you make do you like breakfast i don't i just can't eat in the morning
31:41like i just need to wake up roger was the same really yeah i need to wake up then he
31:46discovered
31:46huevos rancheros what i love huevos rancheros he loves them you know what i didn't know we have
31:53that in common you have that in common go ask him i love huevos rancheros when i see huevos rancheros
31:58i order it every time but i just cannot eat i don't know i just need to wake i need
32:04to like start my day
32:05the last thing i want to do is when i wake up eat fill my stomach with see i thought
32:09it made me good
32:10you should have told me this 20 30 years remember what i said every body is different what did you
32:16grow up eating what was your favorite thing like when you're a kid my mom was a helping up and
32:22so we
32:22grew up like we never like i never had what is those little well you're english so you don't know
32:28but
32:29they have these little cookies like cookie crisp like a cereal cookie crisp quite frankly i never even
32:34had cocoa puffs or lucky charms i didn't have any of that stuff until i got older and she was
32:40she
32:40always had us eating like just the stuff that was really cheap first of all but it also didn't have
32:44all those ingredients and even when we got older we just she always made us eat super healthy wow
32:51so what great parenting so what's your favorite thing to take from them as to how you treat your
32:56girls just the love right the love and protection like you you feel so protected yeah you've always
33:03felt protected that that strong sense of your parents around that's a good question because
33:07sorry because what's my favorite thing that i teach them that i've learned i don't know yeah i don't know
33:14it's tough love love support and also you're interested in them a lot of parents i mean like especially
33:21like you know you take in the city parental roles really challenged right you know i mean yeah whatever
33:28job your parents did i think the whole world got the sense of how complete you are and how sort
33:35of you
33:36know when i when i sort of read snippets see things or or think about your life i just think
33:43about
33:44just the wonderful support you know because that's what it takes right it takes this village to make it
33:50happen it does take a village and i think my mom she moved to california and so we grew up
33:57there
33:58her family was in michigan so she didn't have that like community support with her family
34:03and growing up you know you don't we didn't have a lot of friends in compton because we were in
34:07the
34:07ghetto and you know you have to be careful she kind of was that community for us and then how
34:13far
34:13live from you know like minutes so now we're like 15 minutes 15 minutes away she just comes around my
34:20dad's like 20 minutes or so but i still know my mom's all she's with right now at the house
34:25with the
34:25girls because i'm not there she always she babysits and i think she likes it yeah you think you can
34:32put
34:32that ju in a ziploc for me hell yeah hell yeah but are you kidding me
34:43now i'm just greeting i didn't make you cake though because you said cake you gave me four lists
34:49you're killing me oh you're killing me like such a small list of things it was so brilliant because i
34:54eat to live i don't live to eat it was a great list you gave me it was like chicken
34:59tacos cake no beef
35:02and healthy i was like got it got it i forgot two important things on that list
35:09no tomato no avocado oh my god kill me twice oh my god that would not make the edit
35:19what do you say do you do when it all comes down because i don't want to come back down
35:32welcome back this is a honey cake so a load of butter load of sugar
35:40honey a bit of vanilla
35:46a bunch of eggs while that's mixing on everything organic only the freshest eggs for serena
35:54i don't even mind taking the time and i think that the more you care about someone the more you
35:58prepare to put that time into cooking for them
36:05first time that i met serena i was so excited to meet her and i was so excited to play
36:08tennis even
36:09though i was terrible and i'm a lot better now serena uh was like i'll hit some balls with you
36:13i was like super i was all excited and then she put the she played left-handed and i was
36:18really like
36:18that is just like you know but she can do whatever she likes with a tennis sport
36:25so here we have some sugar she asked for healthy i'd do my best this is to make actually honeycomb
36:32to go on top of the cake honey's weird because the last bit it's like it's like love it just
36:38stays the
36:38honeycomb it's just honey sugar and then used bicarbonate of soda you have this kind of fun
36:43thing it's going to whizz up and you're going to get all so here we're going to put the little
36:48matcha in here because serena likes her matcha the first taste amazing perfect
37:07the culinary spanner in the works of course i am because i'm going to give it the whole cake
37:13that's it though the matcha creme anglaise is done cake is beautiful and the honeycomb is setting and
37:20then we'll put some flowers on that kind of trick it out that's dessert
37:29this is fancy i know oh it's a honeycomb we are i have a farm so we have bees and
37:37like we do
37:38we do a lot we have a lot we just got some really cool sweet potatoes this morning so i'm
37:43excited to
37:44get home to them they're really they look really good what's next for you i mean nothing i'm doing so
37:50much already between the kids and the businesses and everything i'm i'm cool on that and resting i
37:56stop you know but i would be remiss if i wasn't like let's sing together
38:06what do you think it would be one of my greatest the whole this whole evening of you coming here
38:10feeling like a dream come true so can you make my dream come true okay so you know i love
38:16karaoke
38:17you okay okay and that was the physically last time i saw you was like rocking out a whole crowd
38:21of that backstage just wherever we were in miami oh okay florida where oh my god yeah i didn't want
38:27to do what did i actually sing that night or no i didn't oh i did i think i did
38:31like pour some sugar
38:32on me or something my favorite thing was venus was right there with you she was just like she's
38:37she's good and she's just like you know i ended up having to go home because i was having so
38:42much fun at
38:43that festival i ended up i think after your after you went on i feel like i went home and
38:51then i think
38:52i had to put the kid to sleep something happened i kept telling venus i'm coming back and she was
38:57like
38:57no way yeah whatever anyway good night and so i came back she couldn't believe when i was back i
39:04know i
39:04was so happy when i because i wanted to find you i heard you were there and then i couldn't
39:09find you
39:09and then when i met you back there and you were like i came back i had fomo i was

45:08You are.
45:28It's a secret.
45:29I made you look.
45:30You dirty crook.
45:30You stole your mother's pocketbook.
45:32You turned it in.
45:32You turned it out.
45:33You turned it into sauerkraut.
45:34I have a million secrets of people in Hollywood that I will never tell.
45:38God, that will go to my grave.
45:40Unless they really **** with me.
45:44Unless they really **** with me.
45:53If we got that place to call, we, come on, raise your heart up, uh-huh, come on.
45:58Same thing for us.
45:58It just needs to be done.
45:58Like that.
45:58I am.
