00:06Social media posts sharing fake claims
00:09about Europe's record-breaking temperatures
00:11have gained traction during the continent's latest heatwave episode.
00:15But experts told us that misinformation is shifting.
00:18It is increasingly focusing on discrediting climate action policies
00:22rather than, for instance,
00:24outrightly claiming that climate change is a hoax.
00:26We have the idea that it is to deny the existence of climate change
00:31or its human origin.
00:32What we measure is that it is not the most major form
00:35that is today's phenomenon.
00:36We will also have a negation of the efficiency
00:39or of the utility of certain solutions
00:41of the ecological transition,
00:43including the renewable energy and electric vehicles in France.
00:46The reason for that is that there were big regulations
00:49which have touched these sectors of activity.
00:51So the narrative of information comes up
00:54where an evolution of the law is possible.
00:57For example, the economic trade-offs
00:59which come with green policies
01:00are increasingly being used to prop up this information.
01:04The claim that net zero will kill your job,
01:07it will drive up your bills,
01:08it will destroy your traditional industries,
01:10heat pumps don't work,
01:12the EV mandate is the death of the local car plants,
01:14and it's done to working people and it's not done for them.
01:18And this doesn't need any ideology at all.
01:20It just needs a heating bill.
01:21Monetising social media content
01:23is also a highly lucrative business,
01:26which ties into the increasing amount
01:27of misleading climate content on social media.
01:30Those sort of conspiracy theories,
01:32those lies, that ABC of climate dishonesty,
01:35anything but climate,
01:36has become sort of a viral meme every time.
01:39It's something that these disinfluencers
01:40who are reliant on the attention economy
01:43to make their money,
01:45so they have an incentive to post every day.
01:47As for the future of climate misinformation,
01:50experts believe that it will likely depend
01:52on existing narratives.
