This video breaks down the science behind harmful algae blooms. Learn how nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus are the main fuel, and how climate change is making the situation worse.
Transcript
00:00If we can cut off the nutrient supply that fuels algae growth in the first place, that's going to be
00:06a big piece of the puzzle.
00:09And that means a combination of, you know, getting rid of the nitrogen and phosphorus from agricultural fertiliser that's running
00:17off into rivers and streams,
00:20and also livestock waste and sewage systems and even urban runoff that are consistently identified as being the key drivers.
00:27But the problem is, again, that you come back to the issue of climate change in the form of increased
00:34rainfall,
00:35which does the act of washing loads more gunk into our waterways.
00:41And so that's also contributing to the problem.
00:43So the big, big issue really is, obviously, our warming climate.
00:48And there's no simple solution to that other than ones that we well and truly know about.
