00:03low orbit around earth is getting increasingly cluttered all due to new and old satellites
00:08filling up that area around our planet's atmosphere according to a united nations
00:12office for outer space affairs study conducted last year there are currently some 8261 satellites
00:19zipping around earth at high speeds and the owner of one of them has just been fined in a world
00:24first u.s authorities have just handed a 150 000 fine to telecommunications company dish for a quote
00:31failure to properly de-orbit a satellite the orbiter in question is the echo star 7 satellite first
00:37launched way back in 2002 and after it was decommissioned the company was supposed to
00:41move it around 186 miles up in altitude to avoid collisions with other satellites however it was
00:48running out of fuel so they instead moved it around just 75 miles meaning a collision is much more
00:53likely the fine was issued by the federal communications commission with the organization
00:58saying about it quote this is a breakthrough settlement making very clear the fcc has strong
01:03enforcement authority and capability to enforce its vitally important space debris rules this comes
01:08as the european space agency recently released a report finding there are upwards of a million
