00:01This is a day game here in the city. Our fans love these games. There's nothing
00:06like an old-fashioned pitching duel and that's really what it looks like it's
00:10going to be today. Well it absolutely is going to be that way. Logan Webb going
00:13against Dylan Seas. Both the guys are going to be on the All-Star teams. So here
00:17we go. Each team has won a game in the series. On the hill today will be Logan
00:22Webb pitching for the Giants. Webb starting in his eighth year at the big
00:26level. 6'2", 220 pounder. He's 29 years of age out of Rockland California. 15
00:31starts this year. Five and six with a 3-6-6 ERA. So back-to-back little bloop
00:36shots from the Jays and both are base hits. Nothing you can do about that. Two
00:40men on. No hard contact. 72 miles an hour from Clement. 65 miles an hour off the bat
00:46of Lucas. This is the same situation that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was in last night.
00:51Unfortunately for him he grounded into a double play. Tapped and it's gonna stay
00:56fair. And the only play is to throw out Guerrero at first. Downstairs ball four. Took a
01:02changeup and that walk will load the bases with one out. Blue Jays looking good
01:06early against Logan Webb who was June's National League Pitcher of the Month. Now
01:10he'll deal to Varsho. Is lifted out to right center. Charging forward Jung-Hoo Lee
01:14slides and it's down bouncing past him. Clement is in to score. Lucas had to wait. He'll
01:19stop at third station to station on an RBI single for Dalton Varsho. And it's 1-0 Blue
01:25Jays in the first. Base is loaded now. The pitch count is starting to to creep up a little
01:30bit. Logan Webb is now at 23 pitches in the ball game. Another base hit that arguably could have
01:36been caught. A lot of looping line drives for the Blue Jays. Jung-Hoo Lee sprinted forward slid and
01:41just was a little bit short of that one. Okamoto a 235 hitter. 767 on base plus slugging. 11 doubles
01:49and 20 home
01:49runs. Okamoto sends one deep down the right field line and it is off
01:55the wall. No it is gone. The signal from the first base umpire Junior Valentine
02:01is that that ball is a home run. And if that stands it is going to be a grand slam
02:07for Kazuma Okamoto. Did it land up on top? After review the call on the field is confirmed. It's
02:12a home run. It's a home run. The call on the field is confirmed. It is a grand slam. And
02:19it's a 5-0
02:20lead Joe here in the top of the first. Just a stunning beginning to this game. Logan Webb's gotten one
02:26out
02:26and five runs have scored. So the frustrations continue. Now it's a matter of can we get deep
02:31into this game and find a way to recover regroup. Dylan Cease with his seven shutout innings at
02:36Seattle got locked back in and the walks were perturbing him a little bit. The Vila was down a
02:41little bit early in that start against Seattle. Working on his mechanics he told me but then it
02:46still slowly came along. Four-seam fastball turned out to be a great pitch against the Mariners.
02:50Basketball and that's right there for strike three call. And lifts it high in the air deep center.
02:56Moving back Dalton Varshow onto the warning track has room in front of the fence to make the grab and
03:01end the inning. Strikeout ground out fly up. Cease retires the Giants in order. It's 5-0 Blue Jays.
03:07Logan Webb bounces back after the top first for a 1-2-3 top of the second. It's 5-0
03:11Blue Jays.
03:12And that's it. The Jays are gone in order. Dylan Cease is going to face the bottom third of the
03:17Giants
03:17order in this inning starting with six foot seven left-handed hitting DH Bryce Eldridge. Strike three
03:23called to get Eldridge. Right there is a left-hand hitter. You're giving up on it. It looks like it's
03:28going to be away and it just comes back enough. That's that hard slider. Swing and a miss. He struck
03:33him out. Got him on a changeup. He's punched out three in a row and there are two down here
03:37in the
03:38bottom of the third. It's almost unfair at this point. Swing and a miss. Strike three. That strikeout
03:43will help his case. He punches out the side in the bottom of the third and we go to the
03:47fourth with the
03:47Blue Jays up 5-0. Cease has set down all nine Giants he's faced and is on a streak of
03:53four
03:54punch outs in a row. That is strike three call to get Ramos. That is five consecutive strikeouts
04:01now for Dylan Cease. Just think about what Elliot Ramos has done in this series against Blue Jays
04:06pitching and Dylan Cease is just absolutely dominating him today. Cease now with 143 Ks through his first 17
04:14starts of the year has set a Blue Jays franchise record. 12 up 12 down for Dylan Cease. We go
04:19to
04:19the fifth. It's 5-0 Blue Jays. So the error on Adamas means that the inning is still going. Second
04:25and third two down for Springer. He swings here and grounds one toward third. That's a fair ball.
04:29Backhanded by Schmidt from behind the bag. His throw is high. Devers jumps up takes a throw and gets his
04:36foot down on the bag just in time. That was a great play by Devers to save what would have
04:41been another error.
04:42Blue Jays six and seven this year in rubber matches so far. Just lost one to Seattle and
04:48before that just beat the Mets. Rafael Devers will lead off. And a ground ball weakly hit to third.
04:53That changeup again doing wonders for Dylan Cease here today. One down. Cease just mixing and matching
05:00doing such a good job especially against these left-handed batters for the most part just staying
05:04away using that four seamer up and away. Three balls and two strikes. He misses low ball four and that's
05:11the first base runner for the afternoon for the Giants. Yes, he's not thrilled with that result
05:16there. Obviously, you're up by five runs. You have two outs in the inning. You don't want to you don't
05:20want to walk a guy. Breaking ball cut out and missed strike three. Seven K's for Dylan Cease in five
05:27hit list innings. We go to the sixth. That pitch was high. It stays a ball and it's a lead
05:32-off walk to
05:32Gilbert. That is now two walks in the last three batters for Dylan Cease. Yeah, it seems like he's lost
05:37it
05:37just a little bit, but Dylan Cease can do that from time to time. All it takes is one pitch
05:41and then
05:41he finds the command, finds the release point. He's locked back in. And he struck him out. Got
05:46him on a slider. Eight K's for Cease and one out here in the bottom of the sixth inning. Swing
05:51and a
05:51man seat. Got him nine K's for Cease and two down here in the bottom of the sixth. Just like
05:56that,
05:56he's found it again. Last couple of batters. He's had pinpoint accuracy. That last slider looked like a
06:02fastball out of the hand. Two walks allowed by Cease. That's all right now through five and two-thirds
06:07innings and the pitch to a rise and it's grounded toward first backhand play by Guerrero. He will pop
06:13up and go to the bag. A nice snare to make it another hitless inning for Dylan Cease. It's the
06:19bottom of the
06:19seventh. Five nothing Blue Jays. Casey Schmidt goes after the first pitch. It's a pop-up into shallow right.
06:25Coming in is Lucas and on one pitch, Dylan Cease has the first down in the bottom of the seventh.
06:31And
06:32that's big for him because I'm sure the Jays are starting to really watch that pitch count closely.
06:37Cease has not allowed a hit in the game. High ball four. So he draws the walk anyway. He arguably
06:43saw
06:44six balls. Good job by Devers there. Ninth pitch coming to Lee. Three two from Dylan Cease. And Lee hits
06:50it high in the air. Deep right field. Lucas going back onto the warning track. He'll make the grab.
06:54Devers returns to first and there are two down. I think at this point most people,
06:59fans included, would understand the decision taking him out. Most people. Not all people. Most people.
07:05The 0-1 is hit up the middle. Backhanded by Clements. He'll snap a throw to first and it
07:12skips and gets there for the out. Backhanded pick by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. And Dylan Cease is
07:17through seven innings without allowing a hit. Five nothing Blue Jays. Bases are loaded and there's
07:22still just one out in this inning. Miles Strzok came in defensively for Jonathan
07:25Classe in the seventh inning. Now he will bat for Classe here. And he hits a ground ball to short.
07:31They could turn two here. And they will. They get him by a half step.
07:36Oh, the ball was dropped. I beg your pardon. The ball was dropped over at first by Devers. And
07:43instead of what would have been a double play to get him out of it, a run comes in to
07:47score.
07:47Junior Valentine, the first base umpire, did not put up his arm. I thought he was out too, Dan. He
07:53just
07:53watched Miles Strzok pass first base because the ball was on the ground next to Devers. He missed
07:58the baseball. There goes Strzok. And it's grounded to the left side. This is going to be a tough play.
08:05Safe at first. Another run comes in on the play to make it seven to nothing. Dylan Cease
08:11is the biggest part of the story right now. He is back out on the mound in the bottom of
08:16the eighth
08:16inning. He has thrown a hundred and six pitches so far. For context, the most pitches, the highest
08:23number of pitches Cease has thrown in a game this year is a hundred and ten. The most he has
08:29thrown
08:29ever in a game in his career is a hundred and fourteen. In the air to center. Hit well.
08:36Varshow makes the catch. Racing back and left center. He hauls it in for out number one.
08:43If there is a baseball hit to center field in the game in this situation, you want it to hit
08:48when Dalton Varshow is out there. Dalton knows there's a fence there, but I don't think he really
08:52cares. What a play. What a play by Dalton Varshow. And we're still going now with one out in the
08:58eighth.
08:58A big defensive play from the Blue Jays center fielder. One pitch, one out. Swing and a miss.
09:03He got him. Two down. This is as electric as you will ever see. Cease has been, he already is
09:10elite,
09:10but it has been his best stuff. One two pitch to Kavanaugh. Two down and the base is empty. Got
09:15him.
09:16Strikeout number 11. 99 down the middle and he threw eight innings with no hits allowed. Inside
09:23ball. Four to walk to Lucas. Nobody out. The pitch to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is hit well. Out to left
09:28center field. Looking back, Gilbert. The ball is gone. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. absolutely smokes one
09:36to left center for a line drive two-run homer. His first home run since June the 18th at Fenway
09:44Park.
09:45Fifth home run of the season. Maybe the Dragons helping Vladdy. George Springer takes high ball one.
09:50Two two pitches hit high and deep. Left center field. Gilbert going back. And he runs out of room. It's
09:56gone.
09:57Home run George Springer as Guerrero and Springer go back to back. It's George's ninth of the year.
10:03And it's 10-0 Blue Jays. The teams hit mistakes and that slider was just spinning over the middle.
10:09He's on his way back to the mound. There are a fair number of Blue Jays fans in the ballpark.
10:15And it seems,
10:16Joe, that each of them has a pretty good idea of what is going on right now as Cease makes
10:22his way back
10:22to the mound. Blue Jays fans are donning their gear, their jerseys, their hoodies, their hats,
10:27whatever it may be here in San Francisco. And they are thrilled and on their feet to see Dylan Cease
10:33toeing the slab here for the ninth inning. At 115 pitches, the most he's ever thrown in a game in
10:41his
10:41career. The most anybody has thrown in a game this season. But he is a horse. And there's potential
10:48history here. And John Schneider didn't blink. Didn't ask him how he was feeling. Didn't go visit him.
10:54Didn't talk to him. Just sent him back out to the mound.
11:00And it's lined into center. A base hit to lead off the top of the ninth inning.
11:06The first hit of the ball game for the Giants. An incredible performance for
11:13Dylan Cease here today. But unfortunately, the no-hit bid comes to an end. Jimenez, Guerrero,
11:21John Schneider's already out. Tyler Rodgers was ready if needed. And a standing ovation. And
11:29and a job well done by Dylan Cease. Just could not get those last three outs. But what an outing
11:35here
11:35today in San Francisco.
11:43So now Tyler Rodgers comes in. This is his first outing of the series. Again, spent the better part
11:48of seven years here as a giant until he was traded to the Mets at the deadline last year.
11:56As we've gotten to know him, a very thoughtful guy. And this is going to be it if this ball
12:01is caught.
12:02And it is by Guerrero. And that is a one-hit shutout for the Toronto Blue Jays. Cease the
12:09first eight. Rodgers the last three. An incredible performance. Really one of the best games
12:15any Blue Jay has ever pitched. Eight innings, one hit, three walks, 11 strikeouts.
12:20And they they break out the power bats as well. Okamoto, Guerrero, Springer. And now the hugs
12:26could really come. Everybody going to tell Dylan Cease what an incredible job he did today. You're
12:32going to see a lot of smiles. And I think even though he was unable to get the last three
12:36outs,
12:36Joe, I think he's going to be thrilled and take take a lot of pride in what he did here
12:41today.
12:42It is.
