After a determined siege, Jerusalem surrendered to Sultan Salahuddin in October 1187. Through negotiations with Balian of Ibelin, the city was spared the kind of massacre that had marked its capture during the First Crusade. The return of Jerusalem became one of the defining moments of medieval Islamic history.
