It's the money-making move that's raised the ire of constituents, but politicians claiming a nightly travel allowance in the hundreds of dollars for staying at properties they own is within the rules. The questionable claim had the CLP on the attack but after criticising Labor it's now been revealed one of their own is doing the same.

00:02The member for Catherine claiming a nightly $450 travel allowance when staying at a Darwin
00:08apartment she owns while on official business. The claims within the rules but on the nose.
00:15It's disgusting.
00:16Hersey's claims come to light one day after Labor's Manuel Brown was slammed by the CLP
00:23for claiming the same allowance when staying at his Palmerston home.
00:27If you own a property and you're living in your property the precedent is there that that is not okay.
00:33After Mrs Hersey's travel allowance claims were revealed on ABC Radio Darwin this morning
00:39the text line lit up. Most people angry, disgusted and asking why politicians can claim the $450
00:47allowance when public servants can't. On Darwin's streets the same reaction.
00:54I'd love for someone to pay me to stay in my own place.
00:56Is it the pub test that doesn't pass?
00:58I don't get that to stay in my own house.
01:01We're business owners and we can't do anything like that.
01:04The travel allowance similar to what federal politicians are entitled to. Other jurisdictions

01:12Where rural or regional MPs travel to Brisbane on parliamentary duties or official duties and
01:18they stay at their own home or that of a friend or family they receive a reduced rate.
01:23With Joe Hersey's claims taking the spotlight today, Territory Labor may have thought they
01:30had a reprieve from the speeding saga involving Manuel Brown, who was sacked as opposition whip
01:36yesterday, and to Federal Labor MP Marion Scrimgeour, offering free advice to Selina Yubo over the radio.
01:45This is her responsibility. I don't think the sanctions go far enough, but that's a matter
01:51for her. But I think that Manuel should have been completely stripped of his portfolios as well.
01:59Meanwhile, the opposition leader backed in Brown to be pre-selected for the 2028 election.
