00:05Ex-Formula 1 driver Martin Donnelly from Belfast, Northern Ireland, is still an icon in the paddock.
00:12And not just as a racer, steward and driver coach, but more recently for consulting on the F1 film.
00:19Which went well beyond showing his career-ending crash at the 1990 Spanish Grand Prix,
00:24as he shared at the recent Monaco historic event.
00:48For Donnelly, the Monaco Grand Prix is still a thrilling F1 event to attend.
00:53Though his sole start there was with Lotus in 1990,
00:56for which he qualified 11th and retired with a gearbox issue.
01:00I get the buzz coming here. I mean, there's nowhere else in the world
01:04that runs a racer again like Monaco, steeped in heritage, steeped in making drivers famous,
01:13uh, Graham Hill, Senna, goes on just triple this and, uh, I mean, you've got this background here.
01:20There's, I mean, it's just, it's just, you can't get anywhere else. Lost for words.
01:26And Donnelly's 1990 Lotus 102, which was powered by a potent 3.5-litre V12 Lamborghini, was a handful,
01:34as the British X-Racer remembers.
01:38Very physical, because back in the day we had no APS, no traction control, no paddle ships.
01:44All we had was just, uh, stack tackle and your oil pressure and more, uh, fuel pressure.
01:50Uh, so physical was, was, was the word I'd use. Um, but you know, it's, it's, you know, you drive,
01:57then you're in the midst.
