00:05Amazingly, Nebi used to work for me when I think she was 20, not very long ago obviously.

00:11Back in LA, before she came back and married her husband and came back here to Istanbul.

00:16And I'm very proud of her because obviously she learned some tricks.
00:19I certainly did.
00:20And in the years since, she's become one of Turkey's most influential philanthropists,
00:24a devoted patron of the arts, an amazing mother, and a beloved public figure.
00:31Nebi and her husband's 19th century Yali is absolutely stunning, perched right up along
00:37the Bosphorus.
00:38It's easily one of the most breathtaking spots in the entire city.
00:44Derman house, with you, the beautiful ottoman.
00:49So I think the amazing thing with this house is that, you know, I know it's one of only
00:5490 Yali left on the Bosphorus, but what is a Yali?
00:59A Yali is a traditional Turkish Ottoman house, and in what, really, there's actually a mathematics
01:10to design, and what works and what doesn't work, and taste is different.

01:14Taste, you can do whatever, you know, that's your own taste, but there is a certain design
01:19theory, let's say, that I think, so you have to kind of, and everything's wonky, everything
01:26is crooked, and, you know, which is the charm of it, but, you know, when you're doing the
01:31design, you kind of have to take all of that into consideration.
01:34And a funny fact is, actually, that the yellow tends to sink down at, certainly, my husband
01:41actually grew up here.
01:42Which is amazing.
01:43In the house, yes, and Ali's dad was kind enough to give us this house, and so we kind
01:49of had to, again, like I said, modernize it in our own way.
01:52Yeah.
01:52And thankfully, Ali has good taste, too.
01:57We've certainly got some amazing people.
01:59Yeah, and interesting, yeah.
02:00And it's, that's, it is interesting.
02:02It's such a gorgeous kind of moment.

02:06So special, with the East and the West.
