BIR gets back box of Duterte, husband tax records

Impeachment Court spokesman Regie Tongol says on July 7, 2026 that the box containing the tax records of Vice President Sara Duterte and her husband, Manases Carpio, was returned to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

00:00There are administrative updates. As to the BIR box, the BIR box was transmitted by the impeachment 4th term on
00:09July 7, 2026, and was received by Attorney Andrain Garcia Marquez of the Office of the BIR Commissioner at exactly
00:1911.07 AM.
00:21We will be attaching a photo of the receiving copy to the paper that we will give you later.
00:28As to the House Panel of Prosecutors' subpoena request, the request for issuance of subpoena to the speculum regarding tax
00:37documents of respondent Manz Barrio and 22 businesses which responded, allegedly as interest in, was received on July 6, 2026
00:49at 3.35 PM by the clerk of the impeachment court.
00:53The renewed request for issuance of subpoena to the speculum for back records as addressed to Honorable Eli Remolona Jr.
01:03as chairman of the Anti-Money Laundering Council was received on July 6, 2026 at 3.35 PM by the
01:11clerk of the impeachment court.
01:12Based on the order of the impeachment court on July 6, 2026, the respondent's counsel will be given a copy
01:20and five days upon receipt may file comment and opposition on their read.
01:26Afterwards, oral arguments will be scheduled.
01:30Sen. Gershalian called the session to order and convened as impeachment court today at 2 PM with 20 senators present.
01:39As to the preliminary matters, the inquiry of the Sen. Judge Laxon, on the 16 votes required to convict as
01:47a definitive ruling and not merely a personal opinion,
01:50the presiding officer confirmed and affirmed that such is a definitive ruling subject to the legal recourse of any party
01:57regarding the matter.
01:58As to the manifestation and inquiry of the Council of Prosecutor Lord Nakagunan to the Respondent's counsel,
02:06on the plan of the prosecution to call the respondent as a hostile witness,
02:11the presiding officer reiterated that the respondent vice president can be allowed not to appear but will deal with the
02:19matter once the prosecution files the appropriate pleading in court.
02:23and will deal with it the same way as before, giving the other party the chance to oppose or comment
02:29within five days and with oral arguments to be scheduled.
02:33The start of presentation of prosecution's evidence-in-chief, NBI agent John Mark Calilong, was presented today.
02:42On the defense's motion to have Agent Calilong's testimony be excluded for being not part of the Articles of Impeachment,
02:51the presiding officer denied the motion, citing the case of Enlilio v. Sandigan Bayan as the Supreme Court held
02:58that the additional evidence is allowed as complaint is just a summary of the charge against an accused.
03:06It does not include the evidence to support the charge in the Articles of Impeachment.
03:10The direct examination of the witness was conducted by the Council for Prosecution Authority, Ligutan.
03:17The presiding officer allowed the showing in open court of the 2-minute and 18-second video,
03:24exhibits P4-10 and contained in exhibit P4-10A,
03:31despite objection from the defense, on the need to show the whole two-hour video instead.
03:37The presiding officer, as well, made several evidentiary rulings on motions and objections of both parties.
03:45Several Senatory Judges asked questions to the prosecution and its witness.
03:50But not is the question of the Senatory Judge Contiveros
03:53on why Article 4 is tantamount to an impeachable offense
03:58to which the Council for Prosecutors, Atty. Ligutan, answered in affirmative with explanation.
04:04This prompted a motion from Senatory Judge Pia Caetano
04:08to move to strike the response of Atty. Ligutan.
04:12The presiding officer moved to table the motion to strike out
04:18and to be taken out at a later time.
