00:00Hello friends, this week we are joined by very special guest Ben Schwartz, the star of Sonic the Hedgehog.
00:04Wow, your voice changes totally when you announce this.
00:07I know, it goes up very hot.
00:08Oh my goodness, that was a shock.
00:10We are playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
00:11We sure are! Sonic the Hedgehog 2, both of us together.
00:14We're going to play a video game and have fun on the Genesis Mini.
00:21We missed the Sega. Can I tell a story about something?
00:23Yes, please do, actually, because that's not my question.
00:24Oh, I wish I had my phone on me. I could play it for you.
00:26But Jeff Fowler, who's the director, and I were recording many, many times over and over again.
00:30And we thought it would be funny if it was my voice saying Sega like ten times over or so.
00:36So we recorded it and then it is of course not in the movie because it probably sounded terrible.
00:42So if anybody wants to take this audio and do it five times over, it goes Sega.
00:47Okay, so we have a whole bunch of questions.
00:48They start off very easy and then the questions get progressively harder and harder until they're incredibly hard.
00:54Okay.
00:56It starts off easy. What was the very first video game that you ever played?
01:00Oh, it was probably Dig Dug or like Mavis Beacon teaches typing or something like that.
01:04Do you remember that?
01:05Oh, we're in two so we can spin dash, can't we?
01:06Yes.
01:08Macho Batstrike.
01:09What was your favorite game growing up?
01:11Of all time?
01:13Yeah.
01:14It probably would have been...
01:16Oh, I loved Link to the Past.
01:18I thought Zelda was unbelievable.
01:20Is it your favorite Zelda game?
01:21I don't know. Ocarina of Time is pretty incredible, too.
01:23I did just beat Breath of the Wild and then it's awakening me.
01:25Okay, let's talk a little bit about Sonic the Hedgehog the movie.
01:29Famously, this had a bit of a redesign of the character.
01:31What did that mean for you?
01:32Did you have to go back and re-record more lines?
01:34Why didn't I tell you how long this is taking me?
01:36This is like embarrassing.
01:38Well, I would...
01:38I am three seconds...
01:39You've got two tails.
01:41Two player wins?
01:42Wait, is it not time?
01:44No.
01:45Oh, it's...
01:45Of course.
01:45See, I've never played Versus before.
01:47So, rings, item box...
01:49Oh, okay.
01:50Everything's gonna change.
01:50I just want to go back that you were trash-talking and I actually beat you.
01:53Okay, you're right.
01:53I beat this game, but I was by myself like a lonely boy.
01:56By the way, I say lonely boy, it was like a couple weeks ago.
02:00My biggest thing when we do that...
02:02So, we had just finished the movie, right?
02:04And we had no idea how many people actually cared.
02:07You know what I mean?
02:08And we were really hoping that when it came out, people would really respond to it.
02:11Or when the trailer came out, people would respond to it, people would be excited.
02:13So, our hope was like, let's see if anybody cares.
02:16And then when it came out, so many people were so passionate and so excited and had their own ideas
02:21and wanted to talk about it that it made us feel incredible.
02:23Like we had something special that, you know, once we get this out there and once we tweak it in
02:28whatever ways,
02:28it could be a really special thing.
02:29So, the biggest thing I got from all of that was that all these people were really excited to see
02:34the movie
02:34and there were people that really cared about Sonic as much as me, Jeff, James, Jim, and all that everybody
02:38liked.
02:38What did you think of the original design when you first saw it?
02:40What did you think of the original design?
02:41I was a little bit confused by it.
02:46Oh.
02:46Very nice answer.
02:47It was a different design.
02:49I was not expecting it to look that way.
02:50I'm really happy with how it ended up.
02:52Oh, you could steal my rings.
02:54When I saw the final thing, I was really happy with how it turned out.
02:57And I was excited by the...
02:59I feel like we can get stuff here.
03:00I was excited by the...
03:02I was excited by the...
03:04Wait, look.
03:05The kind of way I was playing the voice very much matched what this final design was.
03:08Did you change the voice at all after the redesign?
03:11Yeah, before the redesign it was this.
03:12Hey guys, it's me soon today.
03:14Get here first.
03:16See?
03:16This is what I don't get.
03:18I slowed down.
03:19Uh-huh.
03:20I didn't do much of anything.
03:22And I still win.
03:23I mean, you gotta tag it up with the people at Sonic, not me.
03:26I didn't make the rules of the game.
03:28There you go.
03:28Let's go.
03:29Oh, here.
03:30This is a very fun aspect of the game.
03:31Oh, this is one of my favorite things.
03:32This is also...
03:33There's a bit in the movie where this is referenced.
03:35There's a lot of bits in the movie.
03:36Yes.
03:36There's a lot of little Easter eggs.
03:38The bandanas.
03:39We have a Super Smash Brothers reference in it.
03:40I missed that one.
03:41What's that?
03:42There's a pose that Sonic does that's very smashy.
03:46And then there's...
03:47You know when you're on the top of something and Sonic kind of tips over like this?
03:51That is in there as well.
03:53And then I have a series of Jim Carrey references.
03:57Not Sonic related.
03:58Okay.
03:59I have more questions for you.
04:00Yeah, I can't wait.
04:00You're doing great by the way.
04:01Thank you very much.
04:02I appreciate it.
04:02No one would ever know this is your first interview.
04:04Ow.
04:05Okay.
04:07On your social media recently, people showed you this image and you responded to it.
04:12Yes.
04:12I'm trying to distract you right now.
04:13Do you understand this now?
04:15And what are your thoughts on this image?
04:16Can I tell you what I know and you can tell me how close I am?
04:18Yes, please do.
04:18This is off of a video game.
04:20There's a TV show called The Witcher.
04:21Yes.
04:21Correct?
04:22And so The Witcher is...
04:24It follows a...
04:25It seems like a...
04:26A witcher.
04:26Strong guy.
04:27What is a witcher?
04:28A warlock, essentially.
04:29Okay.
04:29So it's like a mixture of a witch and a...
04:31What's the ur part?
04:33That's him.
04:33It's like the...
04:34Oh, that's his...
04:35Okay, got it.
04:35And there's a...
04:36I heard...
04:36I haven't seen the show.
04:37This is just me learning from people tweeting at me.
04:40That there's a very annoying guy that sings.
04:43Is that pretty accurate?
04:44Yeah, no, you're on face.
04:45Okay.
04:46So this is just me reading tweets and so...
04:48Or he sings a lot towards The Witcher.
04:50And so they said that's like John Ralphio and that's a picture of John Ralphio.
04:53Gotcha.
04:53Do you have personal affinity for that picture?
04:55Do you like it?
04:56I think it's great.
04:56Yeah, it's a great picture.
04:57Who do you look up to...
04:59Wow.
04:59Wow.
04:59I hope we're...
05:00And we're showing the screen in this, right?
05:02I lost on that one.
05:04We'll cut that part out.
05:06Who do you look up to and admire both as an actor and as a comedian?
05:09I think you.
05:11Yes.
05:11I try to push my day exactly.
05:12I saw you do this Mortal Kombat interview and my life has never been the same.
05:17Oh, you know what?
05:17When I started UCB, I really looked up to Amy Poehler.
05:20She's one of the people who created our theater along with Matt Besser, Matt Walsh and Roberts.
05:24But that whole group was pretty incredible.
05:27And that whole...
05:27Tina Fey and all those people loved Will Ferrell.
05:31I loved that old school SNL thing.
05:33So I feel like everybody likes a version of SNL they grew up with.
05:36So mine would be like Farley and Adam Sandler and stuff like that.
05:41You voiced a turtle.
05:42You voiced a duck.
05:44You voiced a little droid robot in BB-8.
05:47How dare you?
05:48And now you've also voiced a hedgehog.
05:50If they all entered the Thunderdome together, who would walk out alive?
05:53Ah!
05:55Okay.
05:56Well, this is the problem.
05:57I don't think anybody can catch up to Sonic.
05:59How do you beat something you can't catch?
06:01I'm asking you the question.
06:02You can't...
06:02I don't think you can't...
06:03I think...
06:04Dewey's like an adventurer, I think.
06:06Right?
06:06So Leonardo's actually a ninja.
06:08But how do you beat something you can't catch?
06:10I think the problem would be Sonic.
06:11So you're going for Sonic?
06:12Well, yeah.
06:13I'm doing press for Sonic right now.
06:15So whoever the person...
06:17Tomorrow it may be my character from Space Force that I think will...
06:21We'll have you in again tomorrow.
06:23BB-8 speaks in beeps.
06:25He sure does!
06:27What does his dialogue look like on a page?
06:29By the way, there was real dialogue.
06:30Did you know that?
06:30I know.
06:31That's my question.
06:31Oh, great question.
06:33Thank you for doing research.
06:34So when I did this, JJ and I went together and we thought of dialogue of what he would say.
06:39I don't remember what it was.
06:41I remember yelling sometimes and being really emotional sometimes because I wanted...
06:44The whole idea of what I was doing was...
06:45JJ said we want a character that you can feel when he's happy, you can feel when he's sad.
06:51So it's like I wanted to be able to do all those things.
06:54So when I did all those lines, we were trying to do all the different emotions and stuff.
06:57So every line for BB-8 then actually is words written on a page?
07:00Not every line, but for the first couple, then we gave it to Industrial Light & Magic.
07:04And when we gave it to ILM, when it came back, it felt like you could hear a human saying
07:09words.
07:10So I was like, ah, maybe this isn't the right way to go.
07:12So then we use a synthesizer.
07:13Then we tried other things and I went and did a movie and Bill Hader took over.
07:16Then I think JJ just found an app and that's how it all worked out.
07:20I literally think that's what happened.
07:21What is your BB-8 voice?
07:23What is up?
07:24Say it again?
07:24That's the next question.
07:25What does your BB-8 voice sound like?
07:27It was kind of like...
07:29Can you give me a little taste?
07:30It was just similar to...
07:31I think it was similar to my voice, just a little bit higher.
07:33Gotcha.
07:34He wanted to be like...
07:35I think he wanted to feel like me talking.
07:38Speaking of your relationship with JJ Abrams, he just signed a very big deal with Warner.
07:42Did we die?
07:43Both of us died.
07:44You know how embarrassing that is?
07:47It's not over though.
07:47Casino Night is even harder.
07:49It's hard to talk and play with someone.
07:51It's very difficult.
07:52And not worry about...
07:52It's not about finishing the round.
07:53It's about...
07:54It's about destroying your...
07:56Yes.
07:57I'm not a very competitive person though.
07:59Yeah, but you're beating me, so...
08:00Yeah, but also I want you to win because this is your show.
08:02Yeah, but that makes me feel worse because you are beating me.
08:04Yeah, I guess that makes me feel better.
08:06Maybe I am competitive.
08:06Yeah, it seems like it.
08:08Your relationship with JJ Abrams, you wrote some lines for C-3PO in The Rise of Skywalker.
08:14I sure did.
08:14You've mentioned a couple.
08:15Do you have a favorite one?
08:16I also...
08:16Do you want me to give you an exclusive?
08:17I do, please do.
08:18Do you want me to give you an exclusive?
08:20Yes.
08:20Should we get lasers and stuff?
08:21Yeah, put an exclusive on.
08:22I also play Kylo Ren in Rise of the Skywalker.
08:25I never knew that.
08:26Yeah.
08:26See, I thought it was Adam Driver.
08:27Who?
08:28I see some acting.
08:29Is that from Girls?
08:31No, in Episode 7 I also had a line.
08:34Isn't that exciting?
08:35It is exciting.
08:36Do you have a favorite line that you wrote for C-3PO?
08:38Yes.
08:38Well, in 7 the line that got in was Han Solo sees Princess Leia for the first time.
08:45And they see each other's face and then C-3PO's in between them.
08:49And they're obviously just looking at each other.
08:51And C-3PO goes, oh, he probably doesn't recognize me because of the hand.
08:55That was me.
08:56I like that one.
08:57My favorite one from 9 was when he goes, what's the deal with the peanuts?
09:02You're neither a peanut or a nut.
09:05No, my favorite line for C-3PO in Rise of Skywalker was they fall down the sand.
09:11Yes, yeah, yeah.
09:12And when they fall down, I believe it was Poe goes, Finn, Finn, are you okay?
09:18Rey, are you okay?
09:19And then C-3PO comes in the background and he goes, you didn't say my name, but I'm okay.
09:24Poor C-3PO.
09:25And when I did the lines, I did them as a voice note.
09:28On my phone, there's all these voice notes of me and C-3PO doing all these weird lines.
09:32We're only like, you know, 4 out of 25.
09:34I feel like between the Sega recording and then the C-3PO lines.
09:37Your phone has a lot of stuff, yeah.
09:38Yeah.
09:39I also randomly have a lot of pictures of you on my phone.
09:41That is very strange.
09:42It is strange.
09:42Because we've never met before.
09:43So I'm a bit concerned about that.
09:44You've never met me.
09:47In Sonic the Hedgehog, you got to work with Jim Carrey.
09:50Do you have a relationship with Jim Carrey ongoing?
09:51Do you have Jim Carrey's phone number?
09:52I do not.
09:53Because I didn't get to, I wasn't on set when they were filming.
09:55Mm-hmm.
09:56I met him one day during filming.
09:58And he was lovely.
09:59And I asked him about Ace Ventura and it was a joy of joys.
10:02And then during press, I got to hang out with him.
10:04That's been one of the coolest things about press is I have these pictures with Jim Carrey
10:08that are like, I can't wait for this.
10:09Like in high school, it's like this.
10:11There's all these like childhood dream things are happening.
10:13It's, he was unbelievable.
10:15And when he talks to you, he connects with you.
10:17He looks at you in the eyes and it's like, it's, I feel very lucky to have gotten to work
10:21with him and James Marsden and Tika Sumter.
10:23But I mean, Jim was like an idol of mine.
10:25Mm-hmm.
10:26Okay.
10:26Now we got into the really, really hard questions here.
10:28Oh, wow.
10:29If there's an edge of the universe, what do you think is at it?
10:31Oh, that's a good question.
10:33Tell me, define, define what the edge of the universe is.
10:35You're talking about the entire thing.
10:36You're saying it's not all expanding or whatever.
10:38It in fact ends.
10:39Yes.
10:39I'm saying there's a finite amount of universe.
10:41Yeah.
10:42And so when, when I come to that last exit on the universe freeway, what is that?
10:46I know what it is.
10:47Okay.
10:47Tell me.
10:47I like researched it.
10:49Really?
10:49Okay.
10:49Yeah.
10:49My major was end of the universe.
10:52Oh, okay.
10:52Yeah.
10:53Whoa.
10:54Damn.
10:54Whoa.
10:54Take a screenshot.
10:55Someone take a screenshot.
10:57Someone take a screenshot.
10:59I mean, there's not one thing that you even came close with.
11:02That one's really bad.
11:04I'm a gaming editor.
11:05I just want to put that out there that this is my job.
11:10Oh, I do know it's there.
11:12Yeah.
11:12What's at the end of the universe?
11:13You ever see the end of Lost?
11:14Yes, I did.
11:15It's that, but Jeff Goldblum's face.
11:17Does he say something?
11:18Well, it goes out far enough where you see the entire, so you come to the edge of the universe
11:21and it's just Jeff Goldblum.
11:22Yeah.
11:23You look into his eye and it's a whole other universe like Men in Black.
11:26Wow.
11:26Yeah, yeah.
11:27And then in that universe, you go in and it's Gilbert Godfrey's eye.
11:30And you go into that, this is going to blow your mind.
11:32And it just keeps going with James.
11:33No, it goes back to Jeff Goldblum and that's how the universe is infinite.
11:37Is that another exclusive?
11:38Can we exclusive tag that one?
11:40Please.
11:40Well, we got two.
11:42The last question, this is probably the hardest one.
11:44This is the last question?
11:45Yeah, no, I'm sorry.
11:45All right.
11:46At the end of Inception, do you think Cobb is still in a dream?
11:48I, no joke, put this in a movie of mine.
11:51Really?
11:52Okay.
11:52Yes.
11:53I just ruined the line in a movie that I wrote.
11:55But literally, one of the things that someone says is that they don't understand the end of Inception
12:00for that exact reason.
12:02So when, so I'm in the, well, I'm going to do a name drop right now.
12:05Please do.
12:06You heard of the WGA?
12:08I'm in the WGA and a part of the WGA is they often give you the scripts for movies that
12:12are nominated.
12:13So when Inception was nominated, I went to the script to see if the top had fell down or not.
12:18And what did you find there?
12:19I found that they didn't give me a goddamn answer.
12:22Wow, so Nolan doesn't even know what happened.
12:23I'm sure Christopher Nolan has an idea of what happened in his movie, but I don't think you want to
12:27tell us.
12:27I think it's whatever we wanted.
12:28What did you want to happen?
12:30Personally, I like to think that it does fall over and he's not in a dream anymore.
12:33Cause I'm an optimist.
12:34This is going to be crazy.
12:35I actually do know what it means.
12:36Okay.
12:36Do you want me to tell you?
12:37Is it involved Gilbert Gottfried in any way?
12:39No.
12:39What are you talking about?
12:40I don't know.
12:40Where did that even come from?
12:41No.
12:42Do you want to know what it's about?
12:43I do.
12:44Okay.
12:45This is going to blow your mind.
12:45I'm ready.
12:46What was the question?
12:49Is Cobb still in a dream at the end of Inception?
12:51Oh, I know the answer.
12:52Okay.
12:53You're taking your time.
12:54Answer me.
12:54Do you want to know it?
12:55I do.
12:55Yes.
12:55That's why I asked.
12:56I'm afraid you can't handle it.
12:58What was the question again?
12:59The question was, at the end of Inception, 2010 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio is directed
13:03by Christopher Nolan.
13:05Is Cobb, the character played by Leonardo DiCaprio, still in a dream?
13:09Okay.
13:09I'll tell you the answer.
13:11Do you think you can handle it?
13:12I'm ready.
13:12Okay.
13:13The answer is that he wakes up from the dream, and the whole time, it's been his character
13:19from Catch Me If You Can.
13:21That's mind-blowing.
13:22So it was a long con.
13:23Can I be honest?
13:24Yeah.
13:24Do you want me to tell you how that ends?
13:25I do.
13:26And that's a dream within a dream, of course, because we're in Inception.
13:29Uh-huh.
13:29And so that character wakes up, and it's him dying in Titanic.
13:33A lot of your answers are kind of like a thing that pulls out to be another thing,
13:36I feel like.
13:37How dare you?
13:38Look at the screen.
13:40Tell everybody what you do.
13:42I review video games, and I cover video games.
13:44So you play video games probably, right?
