00:00Look out, we've got Melbourne, we've got Heideman, Johnson, Fahm, and Milonga for Seattle.
00:04Wheeler, Atkins, Burrell, Agwumake, and Dierka Hamby.
00:07The starting five for Lynn Roberts.
00:10And the 8-10 right now, Los Angeles Sparks.
00:12Again, without Kelsey Plum, without Cam Brink, without a couple of their leading scorers.
00:18But Seattle is turning to their young players right now.
00:21Youngest starting lineup.
00:23We talk about the Washington Mystics, right?
00:24Youngest roster this year in the W.
00:27But, Awa Fahm.
00:30Jade Melvin, Dom Milonga, Lange Johnson, as we just showed you.
00:35And T. Heideman is really the vet in the starting five for Seattle.
00:39The youngest starting lineup in the W this season.
00:41Yeah, and they don't have a great record, but we're at Shooter Round.
00:44We've been at games, and this is a team that plays hard.
00:47They've been close.
00:48They let games slip away at the end.
00:50Certainly been some slippage with turnovers and offensive rebounds and putbacks and things like that.
00:54But, boy, the future is definitely bright in Seattle.
00:58Seconds of three meetings this season between the Storm and the Sparks.
01:02And L.A. wins the tip.
01:04Gets it over to Agwilberkay, who gets it down to D'Erika Hemby, print of the news.
01:09L.A. has not gotten off to great starts over the past couple games, so an early bucket certainly helps
01:15the cause.
01:15Yeah, it has been a long time since they've been on the floor.
01:19Meanwhile, Seattle is their third game in five days.
01:22And this is Fawn.
01:23The high arc in three.
01:24Got a great three-point shot, even though that one was off the mark.
01:27She didn't miss one at Shooter Round this morning.
01:30And it's just such a beautiful stroke.
01:32Ray Burrell has been one of the players to step up in the absence of Kelsey Plum.
01:37And this player as well, Hamby, good spin move, but she could not finish.
01:41Well, that's the challenge with all the length inside for Seattle.
01:43The rim protection is really good.
01:45And both teams talk to us before tonight's contest as Johnson lets it and drills it.
01:51Nothing but the bottom of the net for Flaugé Johnson.
01:54And a great sign for Seattle.
01:55When her feet are set, she takes her time.
01:57That shot is good.
01:58She shot very well in her senior year at LSU from three.
02:01And coming off that season low, just one point in the close loss to the Portland Fire Saturday.
02:08Yeah, but she had eight rebounds.
02:09I mean, she was still working hard for the money.
02:11Well, again, we're going to talk about her rebounding prowess.
02:13I know that has you fired up.
02:15Burrell, no.
02:16More good defense by Seattle.
02:19Man, you're going to say that a lot tonight.
02:21Well, again, both teams wanting to rebound the basketball better, wanting to play defense better.
02:26Flaugé looking off her defender, left hand a little bit short.
02:28So Gouma-Kate with the rebound for L.A.
02:33So, again, Burrell stepping up.
02:35No Kelsey Plum the last two games.
02:38This is Wheeler off the heel.
02:40And what do you know, another rebound by Flaugé.
02:42Yeah, it's been an issue for L.A.
02:43They have not been able to consistently knock down threes this year.
02:46And it has hurt them offensively.
02:48Yeah, just four for 20 from three.
02:50Their last time out.
02:52Milonga, he being from three.
02:53Long rebound out to Oguma-Kate.
02:56But that is such a key piece of what Lynn Roberts wants the offense to look like.
03:02Oguma-Kate doesn't get the role.
03:05Milonga, ahead to Pomp.
03:07Again, look at the length on this.
03:09That's right.
03:09Johnson steps into a trail triple.
03:11And Flaugé Johnson is two for two from outside.
03:16Early confidence really can float you for a long time.
03:20And she is somebody who can get fired up in a hurry.
03:23Well, we talked about it in the open, Mary.
03:24She had one of her best games of this rookie season.
03:27In Seattle against East Sparks.
03:2814 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, no turns.
03:32So, maybe there's something about playing the purple and gold of L.A.
03:35Who knows?
03:36Shot clock about to expire.
03:37Hamby sees it.
03:38Heaves.
03:39Hits the rim along to the rebounds.
03:44Yeah, it's really that three-point shot that needs to start falling for L.A.
03:48What a start it has been for Johnson.
03:50Yes, electric.
03:53All eight of Seattle's points so far.
03:56It is Flaugé eight, L.A. two.
03:59Six straight misses.
04:01Now for the Sparks.
04:04Leticia Heidemann again, the veteran leader of this very young Seattle team.
04:09Tough pass there.
04:11And Flaugé couldn't hang on.
04:13Flaugé trailing.
04:15Nice patience with the pass.
04:17And she just walks right into that three.
04:20And here, the hard crossover gets into the paint.
04:23It gets to the rim.
04:2622 years young.
04:28National champ at LSU.
04:31Got Atkins.
04:32It goes.
04:32And up and in it goes.
04:34Atkins playing without the mask.
04:36And I think you're going to see a player who shoots the ball much better.
04:39She was very encumbered since she's been wearing it.
04:42Yeah.
04:43It seemed that way from afar.
04:46Johnson.
04:46The crossover.
04:47The whip passed a foul, but a foul.
04:50And a hard contact there with Burrell.
04:58And there's head coach Lynn Roberts.
05:01And it has been a struggle the last two without Kelsey Plum.
05:04We know defense was circled coming into this season and remains a struggle so far.
05:09And they've had eight days to work on that defense.
05:13Coach Roberts told us earlier tonight, that was the focus.
05:17The last eight days without a game.
05:19Johnson doesn't get the role.
05:21But she will head to the line and shoot too.
05:23And it feels like Flaugé is kind of feeling it early here.
05:27You getting that sound?
05:28It's her night.
05:29It kind of feels like it.
05:31It's been her night here at Crypto.com quite a bit.
05:34Kelsey Plum again out with a lower left leg injury.
05:37Probably through at least the All-Star break.
05:40No definitive time for Plum's return.
05:42But Johnson will shoot too after the foul by Atkins.
05:47All right, O'Mara, let's take a look at the upcoming WNBA national TV schedule.
05:50Tomorrow on ESPN.
05:52We've got Paige and Enrique and Jen Shepard at the Liberty.
05:56And then back here on USA, our Wednesday W headers.
05:59We've got the Lynx and the Sun take two.
06:02And then the Fever coming here to LA to take on the Sparks.
06:04And then Prime Video Thursday, Seattle and Atlanta.
06:07The Fever in Phoenix.
06:08For more on these games, please go to WNBA.com or visit the WNBA app.
06:13Nick O'Bruly-Kin for two.
06:15Right now, Connecticut is up three on Minnesota with six seconds to go in the ballgame.
06:20So in this league, in this year, anything can happen.
06:24Anything can happen.
06:25The parity is pretty impressive.
06:28The strip that time by Hamby on Johnson.
06:31And then Forsten coming back and making the steal.
06:34They are so happy to have her back as well.
06:36Coming back from the foot injury.
06:38Heideman short on the floater.
06:40Gets her a miss though.
06:41Johnson from the corner.
06:43Another triple for Flange Johnson.
06:45And that's what happened.
06:46She made the first one.
06:47Great balance.
06:48Good confidence.
06:49And the confidence is flowing for this LSU Tiger.
06:52Oh, and her teammates.
06:53That was a great shot at the bench.
06:54Just not enough.
06:55Yep.
06:55That's our girl.
06:56Yep.
06:5713 points in four minutes.
06:59The steal by a foul.
07:01It can look open against the Seattle team.
07:04But they are so long.
07:05And it's just not up top.
07:06They use their arms.
07:07They come low.
07:08They just go away and get passes.
07:10And back to Johnson.
07:11It goes.
07:11Why not?
07:12Why not?
07:14And that one off to Mark.
07:16But understandable that she would shoot it.
07:18She was three for three from three before that one.
07:20I think she was thinking why not just like you were.
07:22I mean, come on now.
07:24She knows she's on national television tonight.
07:26And another steal.
07:28And Burrell gets back on the deck.
07:30Trying to take it back from Ezzie Magvigore.
07:32So good to have Ezzie back after she started the season on the injured list.
07:38What a start it has been for the rookie out of LSU.
07:41Four for six from the floor.
07:42Three for four from outside.
07:45Flaugé has 13 points so far.
07:48Yeah.
07:48Well, so far they have not been able to slow down Flaugé Johnson.
07:51All 13 of the Storm's points so far.
07:54Yeah, I mean, a couple weeks ago, Olivia Miles here.
07:56Another rookie.
07:5724 first half points against L.A.
07:59Career high 31 and 21.
08:0226 minutes of play.
08:03And right now, Flaugé is saying, it's rookie night at Crypto.
08:07And she already has more points in this quarter than she has scored in any quarter so far in her
08:13W career.
08:14Horschen with a floater.
08:16So the Storm out of the break and right back to work.
08:19Three straights L.A. turnovers.
08:21And the Storm taking advantage.
08:25Wheeler with a straight on break.
08:27Miler one falls through.
08:28Their first tonight.
08:29And certainly something L.A. needed just to stop this momentum from the Seattle Storm.
08:34They do a great job with their three-point defense.
08:37So good to get one going for L.A.
08:39And top three-point defending team in the W so far this season is Seattle,
08:44holding opponents to usually under 30% from outside.
08:47And Vavor asking for it.
08:50Baum also asking for it in the corner.
08:52Good cut from Heidemann to try to save her big.
08:55Off-iron that time, though.
09:01And the pass-rackle ball.
09:03Drawing the foul.
09:05And in the first meeting, L.A. did a great job of creating contact
09:09and just piling up the fouls against Seattle and getting to the foul line
09:12and making it count.
09:14And that's one of the things that Sonia Raman talked about with us earlier today.
09:21Going to try to defend without fouling, which is obviously easier said than done
09:24when you're going up against vets like Dierka Hamby, who hits the first one.
09:29Wednesday, the WNBA is back here on USA with another Wednesday night W-header.
09:33It starts with Olivia Miles and the Lynx.
09:35Round two against Brittany Griner and Asana.
09:37No, Miles not playing tonight.
09:39That's going to be followed by Caitlin Clark and the Fever here in L.A.
09:42taking on the Fever here in the Sparks, the WNBA on USA.
09:46Looking forward to seeing you once again on Wednesday.
09:4915-11 so far, Seattle here.
09:52And the mask is back for Ariel Atkins.
09:55And Borstin back to work.
09:56That one off-back iron.
09:59Maybe it helps Atkins pull down that rebound.
10:01Trying to go coast-to-coast.
10:03Another steal for Seattle.
10:03Oh, we talked about their length, Mary.
10:07Bomb.
10:08Oh, my goodness.
10:09Yeah, she is just so special.
10:11Knock down threes, pull-up jumpers.
10:13I just have no idea what kind of player she's going to be in a couple years.
10:17So young, so talented.
10:19Third overall pick this year out of Spain.
10:226'6", 20 years old, with the steal there.
10:26We were just blown away by her beautiful shooting stroke and shoot-around here this morning.
10:32Hard screen there, but a good one.
10:34Back to where it comes.
10:36Ezzi.
10:37Straight on three.
10:39Does not get the roll.
10:45Five turnovers, last seven trips, make it six turnovers, last eight for the Sparks.
10:50They are not doing themselves any favors so far.
10:54Trying to cut into this lead.
10:56Longer, no.
10:59I'm sure it's a bit of problem for LA.
11:01On and off, all season long.
11:06Ambie hands to Wheeler.
11:10Has that one deflected as well.
11:12Again, that's what the Storm are trying to do this year.
11:14Disrupt.
11:15Know that they're still figuring out their offense.
11:17The tie-up.
11:18But the foul on Horstner.
11:23Open floor.
11:24You're in transition.
11:26The push ahead.
11:28Stop and pop.
11:30I mean, and the release is just beautiful.
11:32That form.
11:33Beautiful.
11:35She's 20.
11:36I mean, a lot of folks were curious if maybe she would go number one in the draft, right?
11:42Well, none of us for sure.
11:43She'd be a junior in college here in the States.
11:48And 12 points.
11:50Tied her career high with four steals and loss to Portland on Saturday as Hamby gets the bounce.
11:58And it's a, like hockey line change for Seattle.
12:03Five new players on the floor.
12:05It is.
12:07Now, Horstner's the only one staying put, right?
12:09Kate Martin on the floor.
12:12Here's Molonga back in.
12:15Splitting the free throws.
12:16This is Hamby.
12:18Molonga holding that left ankle.
12:20It certainly is.
12:20Yeah, darn it.
12:22And, yeah, we've got a whistle.
12:26Molonga trying to walk it off.
12:29Let's see.
12:32Hands up on her teammate's right foot and just rolled it.
12:37Land on Horstner's foot.
12:39Okay, staying in, though.
12:41I mean, everybody feels ankle rolls differently.
12:44But as far as how they look, didn't look as bad as...
12:48Well, Kim and Brink has a...
12:49Yeah, Kim knows.
12:50...ignificance.
12:51Knows how that feels.
12:52Yeah.
12:53Kim Brink back up big for L.A.
12:55Out right now after a bad ankle turn.
12:59Ankle looked okay on that drive, but couldn't finish.
13:01Martin rips down the rebound.
13:02Kate Martin had that developmental contract converted
13:04to a standard contract earlier today.
13:07So Martin available and expected to get a lot of playing time
13:11as Jihan Park couldn't hang on to that tough pass.
13:13Another turnover on L.A.
13:15And there's Kate.
13:19Conversations with her, just how much more relaxed
13:21this helps her be.
13:22She does not wonder, am I going to play?
13:24Am I going to be sitting?
13:25Am I going to be in street clothes?
13:27Had already played in 10 of the 12 games
13:29she was allowed this season.
13:33Radio Samuelson off back iron on that 3.10.
13:35This is Keanu Williams.
13:37Started her season with the Phoenix Mercury
13:39and then came over here a couple of weeks ago.
13:41Kate Martin can't connect from three.
13:44Proud was ready for that one to go down.
13:46I mean, everywhere she's been, right?
13:47Vegas, San Francisco with the Valkyries last season.
13:50She is a fan favorite.
13:51And just the response to the social media announcement
13:55as Melvin tries to step through and draws the foul.
13:58But the social media response to Martin
14:00being converted to a standard earlier today.
14:03It's just, it's awesome seeing the support that she has.
14:06Awesome seeing this young player.
14:08Jade Melvin having the season that she is having as well.
14:13Drafted by the Storm back in 2022.
14:16Didn't come over until 2023.
14:17Spent a rookie season in Seattle.
14:19And then traded to the Washington Mystics.
14:22And now back in Seattle.
14:24They were hoping maybe she could be the next starting point
14:27or the next Sue Bird, right?
14:29When they drafted her for sure.
14:30In the two years at Washington.
14:32And Melvin will tell you,
14:34just really helped her grow up,
14:36gain confidence, come off the bench,
14:37really understand what playing in the WNBA is all about.
14:40And Seattle thrilled to have her.
14:43Whether she's starting or coming off the bench,
14:45she's making significant contributions.
14:47Career year, points, assists, rebounds.
14:51And her teammate, Stephanie Dolson,
14:53here in Seattle was with her the last couple of years
14:56in Washington and said those two years
14:58were perfect developmental years for Jade.
15:00She's now ready to be the point guard
15:02that Seattle needs her to be.
15:04This is Park.
15:05Left that one short.
15:06Samuelson picks it up.
15:07Minutes to go here on our first quarter.
15:1018-12 so far, Seattle.
15:13Go down, Odomalanga,
15:14stepping away from the pressure
15:16and then off the mark on the fadeaway.
15:18She was calling for the ball for about 10 seconds.
15:20I mean, if I was as tall as Tom was,
15:22I would call for it all the time.
15:25Williams, the groom of Kay,
15:27a couple of former Stanford Cardinals stars there.
15:31Williams, the deep three, wide right,
15:34picked up by Samuelson again.
15:38So about a 10-second difference
15:40between shot and game
15:41as this first quarter winds down.
15:49Longa coming over to create some space for Melbourne
15:51and she does just that.
15:53The seas parted after that screen
15:55and Melbourne takes advantage.
15:58Really decisive move to the bucket.
16:00That was one of the things she talked about learning
16:02the last couple of years.
16:03Don't have to go 100 miles an hour all the time.
16:05That change of pace can be so important.
16:08Akwumake from outside.
16:10And L.A. needs more of that.
16:12Nekke is really shooting the ball well
16:13from anywhere from three on the floor.
16:17Longa from the logo.
16:18And that one is wide left.
16:21But needed those five first quarter points.
16:23Maybe that three at the end of the frame
16:24will get L.A. Go players in the history of the game.
16:266-2.
16:27Really hurt when the ACL struck.
16:29Never really came back to that same level.
16:31But boy, she was great.
16:33Maybe she was the Kevin Durant of her day.
16:35She was special.
16:36Yeah, love that.
16:38Just going to make sure Tarika
16:39is not trying to do any tampering right now
16:41and get KD to her Detroit Pistons.
16:44Tarika saying, I am, actually.
16:46Out of bounds.
16:48So 14.
16:50They had a mismatch inside
16:52and they went right at Kate Martin
16:54trying to get the ball to Steph Dolson.
16:57Foul on Martin, her first.
16:59Samus into inbounds.
17:04It's wild to think
17:05as Melvin whips a pass to Samuelson
17:07from the corner for three.
17:09The SoCal native back home
17:11and stroking it like she did back at Mater Dei.
17:13That's right, from Orange County.
17:15She had a big three against Portland.
17:17And it's scary to think
17:18if Katie Lou could get that stroke going,
17:20what a contributor she could be
17:22for this Seattle squad.
17:23With this long, young Seattle squad
17:27who touched the last.
17:30This is the driving kick
17:32that Coach Rahman talks a lot about.
17:34Cross court, feet set,
17:37bench is ready, bottoms up.
17:40Teammates loving it.
17:42I'm sure there are some Samuelsons in the house.
17:45You would think, again,
17:47I'm sure most folks know,
17:48but I know there's Sonja Rahman,
17:51first year head coach of the Seattle Storm.
17:52But everybody thinks of Katie Lou at UConn,
17:56but she's a SoCal girl.
17:57And Mater Dei is an extremely successful
18:00high school program here in Southern California.
18:03Amongst the successful high school programs,
18:05known for their great football team,
18:06but their women's basketball team is great.
18:08And Lou is one of the best.
18:11This player also known for what she's done here in L.A.
18:17and an and one opportunity coming for Ariel Atkins.
18:20And when we talked to Lynn Roberts before the game,
18:22this is what she talked about.
18:24Neko Gumake having the ball in her hands,
18:25not just as a scorer,
18:27but as a facilitator,
18:28getting others involved,
18:30just make cuts to the basket.
18:32And you've got to have great movement
18:33because this is a Seattle team
18:35that is so long
18:36that if you're not finding an open space,
18:39they are going to take the space away from you.
18:42Five points, seven rebounds.
18:45Two assists already tonight for Neko
18:47as Atkins completes the three-point play.
18:50And what you want to understand
18:50during the break between quarters, Mary,
18:52it felt like L.A. should have been down more.
18:54So maybe the fact that Seattle
18:56wasn't able to take advantage
18:57of that slow first quarter
18:58could come back to Hanum.
18:59Back to the corner and Lou, they go.
19:01Another one falls through for Samuel.
19:05When she's feeling it
19:06and her body's ready
19:08and she has the confidence
19:09and the smile is back.
19:11Single figures in all 16 games
19:14she's played so far this season.
19:15How about Malanga
19:16playing against her former teammate,
19:18Dom saying earlier today
19:20she was excited to go toe-to-toe with Neko,
19:22but then Gumake and Gabe Martin
19:24take it right back for the Sparks.
19:27Down to Park,
19:28known for her shooting stroke.
19:29Too strong that time.
19:32with the rebounds.
19:35Carly's going to,
19:36Katie Lou's going to go stand in the corner
19:38and say, bring it!
19:39Cook shorts.
19:40Yeah, good rebound that time.
19:42Nobody around.
19:43Stephanie Dolson,
19:44and she puts it up and in.
19:46And Lynn Roberts calls time.
19:50But let's take a few more looks
19:52at Katie Lou doing her thing.
19:54She's already matched us season high
19:55with two made threes,
19:57but her feet are set.
19:58The extension,
19:59the confidence,
20:01and the mention coming up
20:01on our American Express at the half.
20:03We're going to have more on that.
20:05The first dunk in WNBA history.
20:07You were there.
20:08I remember where I was, too.
20:10Where were you, Mary Murphy?
20:11I was doing the game
20:11for the Miami Soul.
20:13And Ruth Bradley was the starting center
20:15for the Soul,
20:16and she watched that dunk.
20:19So maybe not as happy
20:20as I was about it.
20:21I think we all were
20:22pretty happy about it.
20:23Yeah, what a moment that was.
20:25Nice moment there
20:26for Ray Burrell
20:27coming out of the timeout.
20:28Let's see if
20:28the Sparks
20:30can get something going
20:30tonight here in L.A.
20:33Down eight right now
20:34with eight to play
20:34in our first half.
20:35Burrell's first points
20:36of the night.
20:37Her offensive production
20:38is so important for L.A.
20:40Yeah.
20:41Have needed her
20:41with Kelsey Plum out.
20:43Good defense there
20:44by Atkins.
20:46And Tarika Foster-Brasby
20:48was in the Sparks huddle
20:49at the last time out.
20:50Tarika, what'd you hear?
20:51No.
21:15All right.
21:16We'll get back to that
21:18in just a moment
21:19as Johnson is found.
21:21But yeah, there she is.
21:22Signed, Alyssa Peely.
21:23Cut Laura Siegler yesterday.
21:26Of course, we know
21:27that Coach Lynn Robertson
21:28and Peely go back
21:29not just last year
21:30here in L.A.,
21:31but in Utah.
21:33Peely was a star
21:34for the Utah youths.
21:35You were covering those
21:35games for the Pac-12
21:36Network back in the day.
21:37It's interesting to see
21:38Brink and Peely
21:39sitting on the bench
21:40there.
21:40They had some huge battles
21:42back in the old Pac-12.
21:45Best conference
21:46in women's basketball.
21:47Just going to come out
21:48and say,
21:49there they are.
21:50And those were a couple
21:51of the best last
21:53Pac-12 bigs.
21:55And of course,
21:55that conference
21:56had a history of them.
21:59hoping to see Peely
22:00maybe make her
22:012026 Sparks debut
22:02on Wednesday
22:04here on USA
22:05when the Sparks
22:06host the Fever.
22:06Not sure.
22:07No confirmation there.
22:08But that's our hope
22:09as Horstin comes back
22:10in for Seattle.
22:10It doesn't get any easier,
22:12does it, for Los Angeles
22:13as Indiana rolls into town.
22:15Well, and that's the thing.
22:168 and 10 right now
22:17on the season, right?
22:18Having to deal with
22:19the injuries to Brink
22:20and to Plum
22:20have played the third
22:21most difficult schedule
22:23so far in the W.
22:24So hopefully it'll get easier.
22:26One of these days,
22:27Burrell thought she was fouled.
22:28No whistle.
22:30Horstin with the challenge
22:31at the rim.
22:33She's starting
22:33to get back
22:34to 100% as well.
22:36Good to see her
22:37getting healthy
22:37after an injury-plaked
22:40first couple of seasons
22:41in the W.
22:42Number 23
22:43in the green and yellow.
22:44Jordan Horstin.
22:45Johnson,
22:46the spin,
22:46the fade,
22:47left it short.
22:51So Seattle leaving
22:52the door open here.
22:54For these L.A. Sparks.
22:57Burrell.
22:58Slotted
22:59by Ezi Magmagor.
23:01Great ball movement,
23:02but Ezi says,
23:03I don't really care.
23:04Melvin.
23:05Up and over.
23:07Akuma K for three.
23:09And it is raining
23:10threes for the Storm.
23:13They are 6 of 13.
23:14They average 9 a game.
23:16Let's see what you did there.
23:17playing in threes
23:19for the Storm.
23:20So that's
23:21kind of a nice working
23:22with you.
23:23As Burrell is fouled.
23:25But yeah,
23:26if they can get that going,
23:28and we talked
23:28with Ezi
23:30about getting back
23:31into this part
23:32of her game
23:33after shoot-around.
23:34That one had to feel good.
23:36And it led to this.
23:39And we did talk
23:40to Ezi about
23:41she had a great block
23:43the other night
23:43against Portland.
23:44We asked her about it
23:45and she just lit up.
23:46She said,
23:46I'd love to block
23:47shots
23:47and it just fires her up.
23:49It fires this bench up.
23:51And defensively,
23:52you know,
23:53you can get beat
23:54in the perimeter
23:54and she just erases
23:55the mistake.
23:57It is such a,
23:58it's such a momentum play,
24:00right?
24:00Taking a charge,
24:00momentum play,
24:01hitting a big three.
24:02But getting a big block
24:03like that,
24:04which can lead to a three,
24:05can also be a big momentum.
24:06And that's what L.A.
24:07misses without Cam Brant.
24:08Because Brant can do
24:09the exact same thing
24:10playing for the Sparks.
24:13Well,
24:13splits the free throws.
24:15Rebound by Magregor.
24:18That's her third game back.
24:20Again,
24:20hurt that foot
24:21playing in the FIBA.
24:22World Cup qualifiers
24:23back in February.
24:25And Atkins and Heideman
24:26both hit the deck.
24:28Foul's going to be on Atkins.
24:30That's her third.
24:31And that is tough for L.A.
24:37Trying to fight through the screen.
24:39What do you think, Mary?
24:40You can't fight through screens
24:42and knock people over.
24:44I mean,
24:44that's not a tough call.
24:45Yeah,
24:45so the mask comes off.
24:47Atkins will sit for a while
24:48as the birthday girl,
24:51Chance Gray,
24:51is in 22 years young today.
24:54Mom in town from Ohio.
24:56She wished her happy birthday
24:57before the game.
24:58She was all smiles
24:58and then refocusing
24:59on her warm-up.
25:00Heideman missed everything.
25:03And the cannon on the floor
25:04for L.A.
25:0632 in white.
25:08Burrell trying to get something
25:09going in this second quarter.
25:10Another steal by Seattle.
25:13Johnson running the floor.
25:14The finger roll.
25:1515 first half points
25:17for Vlaje Johnson.
25:18And it's kind of like,
25:19what just happened?
25:20The flash.
25:22I mean,
25:23the nickname already.
25:25Category 4, right?
25:26Category 4 Storm.
25:28She's number 4.
25:29Love it.
25:30Hamby.
25:30Gets the bounce.
25:32Hamby so effective
25:33from that high post area.
25:35Putting it on the floor
25:35and finding the rim.
25:38Malanga at the scores table.
25:39Set to check back in
25:40for Seattle.
25:41Got this 10-point lead.
25:435 1⁄2 to go in the first.
25:46From the corner.
25:47Horstin 2-strong
25:48into the hands of Cannon.
25:52Year 8th now
25:53for Emma Cannon
25:54who has bounced around.
25:56Erika Wheeler
25:57played last year
25:58for Seattle
25:58along with Neku Gumuke.
26:00Still looking to get
26:01that shot going tonight.
26:02Just 1 for 3.
26:05LA 2 for 9
26:06from 3.
26:07And again,
26:08as you mentioned,
26:08Seattle 6 for 14.
26:10Yeah, they're sizzling.
26:11At 43%.
26:13Yeah.
26:14Hide him in.
26:15Here's the foul.
26:17Yeah, she does such a nice job
26:19of just creating
26:20that contact.
26:24There's the turnover.
26:26Flaugier just accelerates.
26:29One dribble.
26:30Lay up.
26:36So Hideyemann steps to the line.
26:38She won't shoot 2.
26:39The foul on Wheeler.
26:4317 straight free throws made for T.
26:45It's time for that final major
26:47across the ponds.
26:48Mary and everybody else.
26:50Over a rugged landscape
26:51that's tough to endure.
26:52I feel like I need to read this
26:53with an accent.
26:54I'll stop now.
26:54The world's best seat
26:55to be crowned the champion
26:56golfer of the year.
26:57The Open Championship
26:58beginning live
26:59July 16th right here
27:01on USA.
27:04How's your golf game
27:05these days, man?
27:07My clubs are up
27:08top in the garage.
27:10So Dusty?
27:11As it were, Dusty?
27:13Could be much more
27:14than that even, actually.
27:18Hideyemann stays perfect
27:19at the line.
27:20The scoop and score
27:22and one for D'Erika Hamby.
27:27D'Erika Hamby can make shots
27:29that nobody else can.
27:32She just has a great field
27:33for the bucket.
27:34This is it.
27:35It gets a great shot blocker.
27:39Yeah, gets the roll.
27:41And she calls her own foul.
27:44First spark into double figures
27:46tonight.
27:46She's got 10 now
27:47in her first 12 minutes.
27:49So now 10-plus for Hamby
27:50in five straight games.
27:52She has been another one
27:54asked to step up
27:54with Plum out.
27:55Johnson short on that three.
27:56Picked up by Hamby.
28:0235-26 Seattle.
28:04Hamby wants it.
28:05Mm-hmm.
28:06Cannon taking it.
28:08Okay.
28:08She didn't even try
28:09to face the cup.
28:10How did she finish that one?
28:11She fired herself up
28:13with that shot.
28:15Firing up the fans here
28:17at Crypto.com as well.
28:20Second meeting of the season
28:21between these two.
28:22Seattle lost the first
28:25up in Seattle.
28:26Malanga loses her defender.
28:27Too strong, though.
28:28Gets the miss.
28:31Bomb.
28:32From outside for three.
28:33Seven at Tray's
28:34and counting for the storm.
28:36Let me just clean this
28:36up right now.
28:38What'd you guys have?
28:38No.
28:38With the three.
28:39Like, you guys are all
28:41pounding away inside.
28:42I'm just going to be
28:42clean out here.
28:44The 20-year-old says,
28:44calm it down.
28:45Pass it back out to me.
28:47Oh, my goodness.
28:48Going faster.
28:49How about the forward
28:50by Deerica Hamby?
28:54Vets showing the youngsters
28:55how it's done.
28:57You're 12 for the 32-year-olds.
29:00Of course, was a champ
29:02with Vegas back in 2022.
29:04Heidemann gets it back
29:05after Wheeler
29:06knocked it away briefly
29:07and lays it up and in.
29:09Good pace to this second quarter
29:11of the last couple of minutes.
29:15Both teams shooting 42%.
29:17It's been the three-point
29:18difference.
29:18Again, L.A. just two.
29:20Seattle's made seven of them.
29:22Hamby's back to work.
29:24Stripped and taken away
29:25by Horsten.
29:25Yeah, Horsten's fired up
29:26by her own defense.
29:27She is just excited.
29:28Heidemann, no look to Fahm.
29:31And a defense leading the offense
29:32once again for Seattle.
29:35And the lead, now a dozen
29:37for Fahm and the Storm.
29:41We did work one game with you.
29:42It's been fantastic.
29:43But, Kate, NBA, NFL,
29:46and you finally get to the WNBA.
29:48It's about time.
29:49We're happy to have you.
29:50It's about darn time.
29:52And 29 years ago tonight,
29:54Mary Murphy was coaching
29:55the Sacramento Monarchs
29:56to a three-point win
29:58over the Cleveland Rockers.
29:59Ruthie Bolton dropped 23
30:00on you that night,
30:01but it wasn't enough.
30:02It wasn't enough
30:03to knock off the Sparks.
30:04Hamby has been the offense
30:07for the Sparks tonight
30:08in this second quarter,
30:09keeping L.A. in this ballgame.
30:11That's exactly right.
30:12That was one of my five wins.
30:14It was very exciting.
30:15It was a short coaching tenure
30:17with the Sacramento Monarchs,
30:19who we miss,
30:20but it is great to have a team
30:21back in the Bay now
30:22as the Golden State Valkyries
30:23as we've got to travel on Malanga.
30:26And speaking of the Valkyries,
30:27picking up win number 15
30:29on the season tonight,
30:30holding the Mystics under 50.
30:32They know how to defend.
30:34There's no doubt about it.
30:36Just year two for the Valks.
30:39I know folks have been itching
30:41for Women's Hoop
30:42to get back to the Bay.
30:43It's back.
30:45The support's pretty darn awesome.
30:47Kate Martin the heave.
30:49And rebounds down the Fomp.
30:52This is a critical time for L.A.
30:54Can they make a push?
30:55Can they get this lead down a bit?
30:57Can they gain some momentum?
30:59Fomp halfway down
31:00before it pops back out of mind.
31:02And look who's underneath.
31:03The rebounding guard,
31:05the rebounding rookie,
31:06Johnson with 17 in this first half.
31:08I mean, she's amazing.
31:09Certainly what she's done in this game,
31:11but when you watch a game,
31:12just how she hones in on rebounds.
31:14And we asked her about that today.
31:16She said it's all about Coach Mulkey
31:17and Coach Starkey.
31:19Look at her move.
31:20Look at her find a gap
31:21and then just go get the ball.
31:24And then flex on him, Flanger.
31:26Flex on him.
31:27Yeah, she said,
31:29Mulkey and Starkey used to say,
31:30No rebounds, no rings, Flanger.
31:33No rebounds, no rings, Flanger.
31:33And as we mentioned in the open,
31:35not just leading rookie guards,
31:37some respect there between Johnson.
31:40Leading all guards in rebounds
31:42in the W this season
31:44as Agumike hits the first.
31:46And with more on Flanger,
31:47let's go over to Tarika.
31:57Agumike.
32:16Agumike.
