Anti-NATO protests have erupted across Ankara as world leaders arrive for the 2026 NATO Summit. Led by the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) and other left-wing organizations, demonstrators accuse NATO of promoting militarism and foreign intervention while calling for Turkey to distance itself from the alliance.

Turkish authorities have responded with a major security crackdown, detaining more than 100 protesters, imposing demonstration bans, and deploying heavy police presence across the capital. The operation has also sparked criticism from opposition politicians, who argue that the government is using the summit to justify sweeping security measures.

As NATO leaders discuss security challenges, defense cooperation, and the future of the alliance, protests outside the summit venue have highlighted growing political divisions inside Turkey over NATO's role and the government's response.

00:18Anti-NATO protests, mass detentions, and questions over alliance unity.
00:24As world leaders gather in Ankara for the 2026 NATO summit,
00:28the focus is not just on what happens inside the meeting halls,
00:32but also on what is unfolding outside them.
00:35The protests are being led primarily by the Communist Party of Turkey, or TKP,
00:42along with other leftist organizations.
00:44They have launched what they call an anti-NATO summit campaign,
00:49running from July 4th to July 12th,
00:52directly challenging the alliance ahead of the leaders' meetings.
00:59For these groups, NATO is not a security alliance.
01:03They describe it as an imperialist and militaristic organization
01:06that serves Western interests while dragging countries into conflicts.
01:11Their slogans include,
01:21The protesters say they want to expose what they call NATO's anti-people policies,
01:28build international anti-imperialist coordination,
01:31and pressure the Turkish government against deeper involvement in the alliance.
01:35But Turkish authorities have responded with a massive security operation.
01:42According to reports, more than 100 people have been detained in Ankara.
01:47Police have used tear gas, imposed demonstration bans,
01:51and deployed heavy security across the capital ahead of the summit.
01:58The crackdown has also triggered political criticism inside Turkey.
02:03Opposition figures, including leaders from the pro-Kardesh Dem Party
02:07and members of the CHP,
02:09accused the government of using the summit as a pretext for sweeping security measures,
02:15describing the situation as turning the country into a detention center
02:19under what they call an undeclared martial law.
02:25The government, however, maintains that its actions are linked to security concerns
02:30and ongoing anti-terror operations.
02:36Ahead of Donald Trump's arrival in Turkey for the NATO summit,
02:40a single banner has grabbed global attention.
02:43The message read,
02:47The banner was hung from Istanbul's Halic Bridge just days before the July 7 and 8 NATO summit in Ankara.
02:56And within hours, images spread rapidly across Instagram, X, Facebook and Reddit.
03:02The protest comes as Trump is scheduled to hold key meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan,
03:10Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky,
03:13and attend NATO sessions focused on regional security and defense cooperation.
03:19But the slogan was not just about Trump's visit.
03:22It also revived years of controversy surrounding Jeffrey Epstein.
03:27Critics used the phrase to reference Trump's past social association with Epstein during the 1990s,
03:34a connection that has remained a frequent point of political attack despite years of investigations.
03:41The issue has gained fresh attention because of continuing disputes over the release of Epstein-related documents.
03:48Although broader disclosures have taken place under the Epstein Files Transparency Act,
03:54further releases have faced court battles, redactions and delays.
03:58The Justice Department has argued that additional delays are necessary because of victim privacy,
04:05duplicate records and ongoing legal requirements.
04:09Critics, however, accuse the administration of withholding information and slowing the process.
04:16Importantly, while previously released documents have mentioned Trump,
04:20no verified client list or conclusive evidence directly implicating him in criminal conduct has emerged from the released files.
04:29Many claims circulating online remain unverified.
04:33Meanwhile, the demonstrations themselves are being driven largely by Turkish Communist Party and other left-wing organizations.
04:42Their message extends beyond opposition to Trump.
04:45Protesters say they are demonstrating against NATO itself, calling the alliance imperialist, militaristic and harmful to national sovereignty.
04:56So, as world leaders gather for critical security talks, the diplomatic spotlight is now sharing space with street protests,
05:05viral slogans and renewed political debate that stretches far beyond the NATO agenda.
