00:01:31And following your win for the PM's Inspiring Book Award
00:01:34There's been talk that you're an overnight success
00:01:37Well they call it overnight success
00:01:39I call it 20 years of discipline
00:01:41And very little sleep
00:01:44Can you tell us
00:01:45What inspired you to start writing?
00:01:48My brother and I were bullied growing up
00:01:50Partly because my mum's Chinese
00:01:51And she had an accent
00:01:53And kids would make fun of her
00:01:55And in those moments
00:01:57I would feel ashamed
00:01:59Of not only her
00:02:00But also of myself
00:02:02My father is half Japanese
00:02:04Half Caucasian Australian
00:02:05So
00:02:07I've always felt caught
00:02:09In between worlds
00:02:10And as a kid was desperate
00:02:12Just to fit in
00:02:13Like all kids do
00:02:14So writing down these experiences
00:02:16And thoughts was therapeutic
00:02:18And I learnt a lot
00:02:20About myself
00:02:21And about life
00:02:22And that's where the gift
00:02:23That Gives comes from
00:02:24And what do you hope to achieve
00:02:26By releasing this book?
00:02:28Well I hope not only to
00:02:29Entertain all the readers out there
00:02:31But to also help people evolve

00:13:25It's full of great stories and life lessons
00:13:28That were born from some of the most challenging times in my life

00:21:07And Ava you have had a stellar career in the Australian media
00:21:11Can you tell us some of the challenges you've had to overcome early in your career?
00:21:16Well when I started
00:21:18A lot of people underestimated me
00:21:21They didn't think a woman of colour could do this job as well as a man
00:21:24And I had to prove the doubters wrong and block any negative thoughts out of my mind
00:21:30And can you tell us who were your inspirations?
00:21:37My parents
00:21:38They were very kind and warm people and working class and we were always encouraged to invite a person who
00:21:47had no place to go come to our house at Christmas
00:21:51And I remember on one occasion my dad gave me a toilet roll as a Christmas present and I was
00:22:00really upset
00:22:00I said dad why did you give me this toilet roll and he said it's to teach me a lesson
00:22:05that life isn't about things it's about memories it's about friendships and relationships
00:22:12And we continue this tradition today and we tell them don't bring anything just bring a story and and to
00:22:21pay it forward and we continue this ever since they've passed
00:22:27That's wonderful

00:26:50He'd either forget to pick us up from school completely, or if he did remember, he'd turn up drunk.

00:27:10And then he met another woman and went off and started a new family.
00:27:17Mum met Lawrence at the library at uni and he's been with us ever since.
00:27:23And I know he can be challenging, but we've always been able to rely on him.

00:27:30Sounds like a pretty rocky start to life.
00:27:33Yeah.
00:27:34It's a closed chapter now, in the past, and I wish Peter well.
00:27:40It's made Austin and I stronger.
00:27:43So I try not to let it replay in my mind.
00:27:46Which isn't easy, so I write about it.
00:27:51You know he's the best friend I could ever have?

00:28:17Growing up in the country wasn't easy.
00:28:19You know, sometimes it would be in your face.
00:28:22It's like when we'd go shopping, we'd either be completely ignored,
00:28:26or someone who would make some stupid racist comment.
00:28:35And sometimes it could be more subtle.
00:28:37Like we'd just be made to feel like outsideers.
00:28:42Hmm, me too.
00:28:43I went to an all-girls school in the city,
00:28:45but even then, I was constantly asked,
00:28:48where do you come from?
00:28:49And what did you used to say?
00:28:50The bush.
00:28:53Just kidding.
00:28:54I said I was born here.
00:28:55Yeah, me too.
00:28:56But then they want to know, where do you really come from?
00:29:01My mum used to volunteer in the school canteen.
00:29:05And when she started, I was so excited,
00:29:07mostly because I knew I'd get these baked cheesy bread rolls that I loved.
00:29:12And I told everyone in class, mum's in the canteen.
00:29:15And then, at lunch, a couple of the kids ran up
00:29:21and they were making fun of the lady with the accent in the canteen.
00:29:26And asked,
00:29:28is that your mum?
00:29:33And I said, no.
00:29:36That's not my mum.
00:29:38And I stopped going to the canteen.
00:29:41Oh, that must have hurt her.
00:29:43Yeah.
00:29:44Yeah.
00:29:45It did.
00:29:46It cut her deep.
00:29:49But lucky for me, I have the most forgiving mum in the world.
00:29:53And regardless, it's always been harder for Austin.
00:29:56Why?
00:29:57He doesn't have an outlet.
00:29:59I have my writing.
00:29:59He doesn't.
00:30:00So now, if anyone says anything bad about him or my mum,
00:30:06I don't hide in shame anymore.
00:30:09I stand up and speak, huh?

00:31:18because if that hadn't have happened,
00:31:20maybe Kate and I wouldn't have been friends.
00:31:23We do both tend to fall for the same kind of guys, though.

00:31:36All her family's in London and, well,
00:31:39I don't have any family left here,
00:31:40so she's like the sister I never had.
