Would Kevin Durant be the perfect Robin to Cade's Batman?
Transcript
00:00A couple quick texts, and then we'll get to this Kevin Durant report.
00:04I don't know if you believe it or not, but we certainly think it's interesting.
00:07Worth discussion.
00:09Belgium beat the U.S. 5-2 last year slash earlier this year.
00:14Man, March, I was just going to bring that up.
00:16I got 5-2 at an international friendly.
00:21Sounds like it didn't count.
00:22Yes.
00:23By the way, the previous mention, Matt Turner, who I thought he actually was in goal that game,
00:29so you don't have to worry about that anymore.
00:31Okay, good.
00:31Hey, real quick, Russia beat the Team USA in hockey 10-3 before the 80 Olympics.
00:38That's right, in Madison Square Garden.
00:40I'm with you, Jim.
00:41We haven't even unlocked Pulisic yet.
00:43Belgium has some of the greatest players in the world, including goalkeepers, but they are old.
00:49It's a changing of the guard.
00:50You're forgetting their big 5-1 win over New Zealand earlier in this World Cup.
00:56It's the only decent showing they've had.
00:59Like I mentioned, they tied Egypt, they tied Iran, and they were down 2-0 to Senegal through 86 minutes.
01:04That does not look like...
01:06I know what the number says, Tom.
01:07I know if this was college football, they'd put a 9 next to their name.
01:11Right?
01:11They're a top 10 team.
01:14This is a prove-it spot for the United States, but we have watched them play a brand of soccer
01:20we've never seen.
01:21Yeah, they're fun to watch.
01:23They had three goals in the last World Cup.
01:25They got 10, the most they've ever scored, and they have a real striker, and he's allowed to play tonight.
01:30Corruption and all.
01:31Yes.
01:31I'm trying to figure out why he decided to play for the United States.
01:34Wasn't he good enough to play for England?
01:35That's because he loved this great country.
01:36Yeah, he was here for a day.
01:39He said, I'm going to celebrate.
01:40Yes.
01:40I was born here.
01:42Born in the USA.
01:43That's right.
01:44This is a joke, to be honest.
01:46Verifies how corrupt FIFA is from Tony.
01:50It is.
01:51I'm sure we don't have any Belgian ganders in our audience, but I'm sure they got to be pissed.
01:57Belgium ganders.
01:58Or whatever you want to call them.
01:59I like that.
02:00Belgians.
02:00Belgians?
02:01Yes.
02:01No, Belgian ganders.
02:02I like that.
02:03Well, that's what Wojo would call them.
02:04I know.
02:06Costa Lache.
02:07So you put your money where your mouth is, right?
02:09You better bet or shut your mouth.
02:12Okay, I'll make a bet on it.
02:14You will.
02:15That's fine.
02:17I got no issue doing that.
02:18We just got a text from Marvin that you should be deported if they lose.
02:25Costa is the suburban kid that only watches YouTubers and thinks prime energy drinks are the best.
02:29That's what I'm getting from your soccer and houses.
02:35Jim will never learn his lesson.
02:37Egypt and Senegal are both very good teams that Belgium played.
02:40Balogun should never have been the red card.
02:42This does write a wrong.
02:43Robert from Clarkston.
02:45So he's cool with it.
02:46Costa Lache equals Belgium 3, USA 1.
02:50Jackass.
02:55Can't they just reinstate the red card for a later game?
02:58Isn't that essentially what this ruling...
03:00Now he's in probation.
03:01He's in probation, yes.
03:02Double secret probation.
03:03Exactly.
03:04Can't screw up again.
03:08Anyway.
03:09You're excited.
03:09Tonight, 8 o'clock?
03:10Absolutely.
03:10I'm so glad it's 8 o'clock, not 9 o'clock.
03:13Because the Mexico-Europe, Mexico-England game last night was delayed because of weather.
03:20The weather, the thunderstorm.
03:21So it ended late.
03:22But the thing with soccer is you pretty much know it's a two-hour game.
03:27Yeah.
03:27No, that is the nice thing.
03:28It's like college hoops.
03:29You know you can set a clock to it.
03:31Now, the extra time, I still can't figure out how they determine.
03:34I know the referee keeps it, doesn't watch, and all that stuff.
03:39Just put the time up on a scoreboard for crying out loud.
03:41You ought to stop it when it goes out of bounds.
03:43Yeah, or whatever.
03:45Like when they celebrate the goals.
03:47Yeah.
03:47Just stop the clock.
03:48Because that's what stuff gets added on.
03:50Or the penalties.
03:51They like that there's freedom with the clock.
03:54But if a team has a chance, they let it go a little longer.
03:57Which we don't allow in any other sport, by the way.
03:59Because you imagine...
03:59Well, Wings have a power play.
04:01So, you got to give them another 30 seconds to score.
04:04It's only right.
04:05They're in the O-zone.
04:06Don't blow the whistle.
04:07I mean, Mexico yesterday had...
04:08Hey, the Lions are in the red zone.
04:09I know the clock hit zero.
04:10Like, we got to at least see how these four downs play.
04:13Right?
04:13Yeah, exactly.
04:14That's how soccer does it.
04:15I know.
04:15That's how absurd it is when you think about it that way.
04:17It's like feel, basically.
04:19Hey, they got a free kick.
04:20So, let's see if this corner ends up setting something up.
04:23Hey, we're just going to give them a chance.
04:24They got possession on the other team's side of the field.
04:27After watching basketball for decades and people fretting over
04:30tenths of seconds in instant replay,
04:32I kind of do appreciate the soccer approach of,
04:36eh, that's about right.
04:38It's kind of the playground game.
04:39Like, eh, that's about right.
04:40The other question I have is you'll see the team with the lead
04:42that'll like stall when the ball goes out of bounds.
04:45Like, they'll kind of jog over.
04:46And I'm always like, why are you doing that?
04:49Because they're just going to add it right back on, right?
04:52I don't know.
04:53In theory, if this game is being, you know, run the way they claim it is,
04:58if you take ten seconds to dog it over to the sideline and get the ball,
05:02tick, tick, tick, tick, we're going to add ten seconds on at the end.
05:04There's no point in taking your time getting the ball.
05:07Here's another question I have.
05:08Why don't they ever pull the goalie?
05:11They kind of do.
05:12They did actually yesterday at the end of the Mexico game.
05:14You kind of do.
05:16Like, when you've got a corner in the opposing zone and you're down,
05:19they bring the goalie up when it's like the last play of the game.
05:23You saw Mexico do that.
05:24But not like for the last like two or three minutes or whatever.
05:27Have they ever blown the whistle like in a controversial moment?
05:29That's it.
05:30No.
05:31The extra time has ran out.
05:32I can't imagine.
05:32Like the corner kick is in midair.
05:34Yeah.
05:35No.
05:35He comes in.
05:35Can you imagine?
05:36Did he kick it before the whistle blew or after?
05:39They just don't deal with it.
05:40Only one person knows.
05:41That's exactly right.
05:43248-539-9797.
05:46Kevin Durant, do you want him here in Detroit?
05:48Yes or no?
05:49Tom, you had the theory that this will be polarizing.
05:51It is not in this studio.
05:53A polarizing question.
05:55No.
05:55He's a very polarizing basketball player.
05:58Yes.
05:58Maybe not quite as much as LeBron would be.
06:01You saw some of the feedback we got from that, right?
06:03Yeah.
06:03We had people saying if they won a championship with LeBron,
06:07it wouldn't be the same.
06:08Oh, people hated the idea of LeBron.
06:10I wonder how they'd feel about Durant.
06:12I don't know how credible this reporting is.
06:14So, just going to put that out there on the front end.
06:16But, Brett Siegel, clutch points.
06:19This is not sham in ESPN.
06:21Shams isn't putting this out.
06:23Durant has interest in playing alongside Cade Cunningham.
06:27Stoney, do you have interest in Durant playing alongside Cade Cunningham?
06:30Yes.
06:31Absolutely.
06:32Sell it to the people who may be doubting out there.
06:34Well, look.
06:35He's still, first of all, he spreads out the floor.
06:38He's 6'11".
06:39Obviously, he's still a great shooter.
06:40He's still a terrific basketball player.
06:44I'm not convinced he is the, quote, cancer that some people say.
06:51When you say some people, whoa, Joe.
06:52Well, no.
06:52There are other people around basketball who believe that because of the burner account with the phone.
06:58Kind of pissed, allegedly pissed off some of his teammates.
07:01Look, he's gone from team to team to team to team.
07:04Why do people keep trading?
07:05There's got to be a reason.
07:06I get all that.
07:08But on this, and he's not a leader.
07:10What did, was it Barkley who called him or Kendrick?
07:12I forget, one of those guys.
07:13He's a bus driver.
07:15He's a bus passenger.
07:16He's not a driver.
07:17You know what?
07:18That's okay.
07:19Not everybody is a leader.
07:21You know?
07:22Cunningham will be the leader.
07:24Let Durant just shoot, you know, 25 times a game.
07:27I'll be happy about that.
07:29Yeah, and we were talking about getting a Robin, a secondary player for Cade, not the primary player.
07:35I wouldn't be adding Kevin Durant to be the number one player to win an NBA title in the year
07:392026.
07:40But if you really take a step back and say, what are the things that we want for the Pistons?
07:45We want a guy who can get his own bucket and take the pressure off of Cade.
07:50Durant, with his size and shooting, is a threat anywhere he catches the ball, and he can go get his
07:55own shot.
07:56We also have put an emphasis on front court shooting.
07:58A power forward, right?
08:01Yeah.
08:01That's what Durant would be for this team.
08:04Shooting, shot creating.
08:07Stoney, he's won a finals MVP.
08:09I know.
08:10And he did get hurt in one.
08:12He probably would have won another championship.
08:14And if his feet were about an inch too shorter.
08:18With Brooklyn?
08:19Yeah, that three-pointer would have been a three-pointer.
08:21But my point, and not that he is the finals MVP version of himself, but he's been in these battles.
08:25He's been in these wars.
08:26He's played in these games.
08:27He's more experienced than anybody playing on the Pistons.
08:29He's the ideal number two, is he not?
08:31His contract is for $43,900,000 this year.
08:35And a player option for next year at $46,000.
08:39So, that would obviously, you'd have to, I don't know where the money matches unless you trade them to, I
08:45don't think.
08:46They don't want Durant.
08:48They got Sigungun.
08:49The three-team deal.
08:50Again, I think this is.
08:51Well, supposedly, this was all took place during the Jalen Brown deal stuff that fell apart for a lot of
08:57teams.
08:58Right.
08:59So, yeah, I think it's a pipe dream.
09:01It's a bit pie in the sky.
09:02Yeah.
09:02But I'm curious, just on the idea, would you be open to him coming here to Detroit?
09:09Yes.
09:09Are you on board?
09:102, 4, 8, 5, 3, 9, 97, 97.
09:13Because I think on all the reasons we've laid out, the answer is yes.
09:16That doesn't mean everybody will agree with us.
09:18No.
09:19Some people, oh, he's just a ring chaser.
09:21Really?
09:22Come chase the ring here.
09:23Yeah, exactly.
09:24I'd be so disappointed if he came here and won an NBA championship ring.
09:28Oh, no.
09:30So, to make the money match, you'd obviously have to give up.
09:34Not that I would care that much about.
09:36Levert.
09:37Levert.
09:37Duncan Robinson is 15.
09:39What's Levert?
09:4014.
09:40Levert is 14.
09:43So, we're about 30.
09:43About 30.
09:44And then that's about it.
09:46You can do.
09:47I mean, you can't.
09:48And Ron Holland.
09:49Yeah, but that Ron Holland's contract is $9 million.
09:53So, now we're up to 39.
09:54What's the number for Durant?
09:56Is it 40-something?
09:58Yeah, 46, I believe.
09:59We're getting there.
10:00We're getting there.
10:01I would do it.
10:02And if they're under the cap, they're not at the, you know, there's the apron, the first
10:06and the second apron.
10:07Look, I'm not going to pretend I have the exact trade that gets it done.
10:10I'm just more curious as to what the reaction would be if Detroit landed Kevin Durant.
10:14Does this redeem Trajan's offseason?
10:17Because a lot of people are down on the offseason.
10:19Does this make the Pistons an NBA championship contender?
10:21I think the answer to both is yes.
10:23Yes, it would make this offseason feel complete.
10:26Yes, it would put them in title contention.
10:28Serious title contention.
10:29Look, obviously, you'd rather have Trey Murphy than Kevin Durant, right?
10:35I don't know.
10:36Really?
10:38I would.
10:38Because you're going to have him for a few more years at a much better price.
10:42The price I can't fight.
10:43But the better player right now is Kevin Durant, right?
10:46And we're trying to win next year?
10:49Yeah.
10:51I don't know.
10:51I would take Trey Murphy over, Kevin.
10:53Now, the cost probably in future draft picks and all that would.
10:58First of all, I don't anticipate New Orleans trading Trey Murphy.
11:02That's number one.
11:03Number two is, I don't know.
11:06Trajan, what they've done so far in this offseason has been okay.
11:10But we wanted more.
11:12We expected more.
11:14We got excited that supposedly, you know, that Austin Reeves, what they were talking about,
11:20and he re-signed with the Lakers.
11:21Kawhi Leonard was mentioned.
11:23He allegedly didn't want to come to Detroit.
11:24Or did Detroit not want him?
11:26I don't even know.
11:27I did.
11:27Jalen Brown thing.
11:28We talked about this on Friday.
11:30Why they didn't make a better offer than what Philly did.
11:35And I think the reason is that Boston had nothing to do with, wanted nothing to do with Jalen
11:39Duren, is my answer to that.
11:42Have we heard an update on the Duren stuff?
11:43No.
11:44It was like as soon as Walker Kessler signed and there was no more leverage on the Duren
11:49camp, it's been radio silence.
11:51Yeah.
11:51You got to hope maybe Sacramento still wants it if you'd rather, if you want to get rid
11:54of Jalen Duren.
11:57Text coming in.
11:58Feedback on Kevin Durant.
11:59We're going to talk Tiger baseball coming up at 735 because they took two or three over
12:02the weekend.
12:03They've won five of their last six.
12:05They got three all-stars and none of them are pitchers.
12:08I know.
12:10But I have a fear and I want to know if it's a, it's an unfounded fear.
12:14Maybe it's, it's a fear that you guys agree with.
12:17He's so scared.
12:18He's so scared.
12:19I am scared.
12:20We'll get to it at 735.
12:21It's 97.
12:21One.
