00:08hey everyone welcome back for another deep dive you know it seems like everywhere you turn these
00:14days everyone is talking about finding an alternative to x yeah it seems like it and
00:20judging by the sources you guys sent in you are too you're ready to spread those social wings and
00:24fly so that's exactly what we're diving into today let's do it but first maybe we should um
00:29take a second to think about what makes a good x alternative in the first place is it all about
00:34like cool new features or is it more about finding a community that really clicks with you right or
00:40maybe um maybe it's something else entirely what are you hoping to find you know maybe it's about
00:46finally having more privacy you know control over your own data oh yeah definitely or are you just
00:52tired of the uh the algorithm overlords deciding what you see oh yeah i think we all are it could
00:58even be about finding a space where your um your values you know your interests actually align with
01:04the platform yeah exactly and speaking of different values two platforms that keep popping up are
01:10blueski and mastodon yeah they're really leading the charge and they both have this whole decentralization
01:15thing going on which is well it's kind of a big deal it really is so like imagine right imagine
01:20a
01:21social media platform that isn't controlled by one company but instead it's like this network of um
01:28of interconnected servers wow each one with its own little community its own rules yeah that's what
01:33we mean when we talk about decentralization okay so in blueski's world it's kind of like you get to
01:38build your own little online utopia yeah right you control your data you get to um right you get to
01:43customize yeah get to customize the algorithms you curate your own online experience yeah which sounds
01:49amazing so liberating but you know there is potential downsides there's always a trade-off
01:54right of course i mean a less um moderated environment could lead to more problems with like
02:01misinformation or harassment is something to keep in mind that makes sense now mastodon takes this
02:06whole decentralization thing even a step further because it's open source exactly open source basically
02:11means that the platform's code is well anyone can see it they can even modify it distribute it
02:17really yeah it creates this amazing transparency anyone can contribute to how it develops it's kind of
02:24like a um a potluck a potluck exactly everyone's bringing their best to the table to to make it better
02:31i love that and then within mastodon you have these different servers which are basically like themed
02:37online communities right precisely so like there could be one for vintage sci-fi fans yeah or one for
02:43i don't know for cat lovers we're also really into experimental jazz right it makes the whole
02:49experience a lot more focused you find people who share your passions but you can still interact with
02:53other servers in this bigger network they call the fediverse it's like um like having all these
02:59interconnected little neighborhoods within a larger city okay hold on to your hats folks because this
03:03next one is well it's a doozy meta the company behind you know facebook and instagram yeah they've
03:11launched their own x alternative called threads yeah pretty wild right i mean it's kind of ironic
03:17right like people are looking for less centralized platforms and then meta steps in it does make you
03:21wonder they're saying it's a more intimate space for you know just sharing little text updates with
03:25close friends but uh given meta's track record with data privacy it does raise some questions it does
03:32like can they really deliver on that promise of a truly different experience something to think about
03:38yeah for sure now if what you crave is a more minimalist ad-free vibe co-host might be just
03:45the ticket oh
03:46yeah co-host is all about keeping it simple it's like this quiet oasis of um meaningful conversation nice the
03:53focus is on long-form writing you know really thoughtful engagement you won't find those pesky
03:58ads or you know those algorithms trying to hijack your attention it's like um like stepping into a
04:04quiet cafe for a good conversation yeah that sounds peaceful and for those of you who are really into
04:10like longer more in-depth written content there's substack notes ah substack they built their name
04:15with that newsletter platform and notes is an extension of that basically it's a space for writers to share
04:22what whatever's on their minds their thoughts essays articles the goal is to build a um
04:29a loyal readership who really values quality content nice and last but certainly not least we have hive
04:36social which seems to be all about bringing back that like classic social media feel you know totally
04:41think customizable profiles music integration tons of community interactions very nostalgic you know it
04:49really is hive social is tapping into that longing for those uh those early days of social media but
04:55with a modern twist of course the question is can it recapture the magic of those early platforms you
05:00know without falling into the same traps that made people want to leave in the first place that's the
05:04million dollar question isn't it wow we've covered a lot of ground today from these like super
05:10decentralized platforms to these familiar giants trying to reinvent themselves yeah it's pretty amazing how much the
05:15social media landscape is changing it really is but at the end of the day i think the biggest takeaway
05:20here is that there's no single best platform it's all about what you value what you are hoping to find
05:28absolutely like what are you looking for in an online community what kind of digital world do you want
05:32to be part of that's the question really exactly this deep dive is really just a jumping off point
05:37the best way to find your perfect fit is to explore experiment and see what resonates with you
05:43and hey while you're at it let us know what you think of these different platforms maybe we'll do a
05:47follow-up episode based on you know what you guys discover sounds good to me all right until next time
05:52happy exploring everyone
