Half a Sinner is a 1940 American comedy crime film directed by Al Christie. It stars Heather Angel as a schoolteacher who in one day becomes Public Enemy Number One in Pennsylvania. The film is based on Dalton Trumbo's short story "Lady Takes a Chance".

Storyline:
Schoolteacher Anne Gladden fears a dull future. She finally decides to take a walk on the wild side, splurging on some fashionable new clothes and setting off to find adventure. Her new confidence inspires her to flirt with complete strangers. When a gangster pays unwanted attention to her, she ditches him and flees in his car, unaware that there's a corpse in the backseat. Determined to recover his stolen vehicle and its incriminating cargo the thug begins a desperate search. The oblivious Anne, comes to the aid of a young man stranded alongside the road. They discover a body in the trunk of the car and decide they have to return the car. They head back to the city, trailed by both the angry gangster and the cops, who suspect the young couple of murder.

01:21I will not try to be good.
01:29What are you mumbling, Willie?
01:32Nothing.
01:34I think you mean nothing of importance, don't you, Willie?
01:37Yes, um.
01:39Well, please try to be as busy as a bee without the buzzing.
01:44Quiet, children.
01:52Quiet, please. Take your place. Quiet, please.
01:53We'll see where you are.
01:55All right, children. Forward march.
02:00Bye.
02:02Bye, Miss Lange.
02:05Bye, Miss Lange.
02:07Bye, Miss Lange.
02:07Bye, Miss Lange.
02:08Bye, Miss Lange.
02:25What made you write in this book?
02:27Teacher's an old maid, and I hate school.
02:30Because I do hate school.
02:31But discipline is good for all of us, Willie.
02:34And in outer years, you'll be grateful for an education.
02:37Maybe.
02:38Why, Willie, what makes you say that?
02:40Because I hate being grateful.
02:43Oh, I know it's the spring, and I feel it, too.
02:46But everybody has duties and responsibilities, Willie.
02:50Few of us are able to live as we'd like to live.
02:52So you may as well learn to make the best of things, if you can't escape them.
02:56Yes, Miss.
02:57Can I go now?
02:58Yes, Willie.
02:59You may go now.
03:05Oh, naughty again, eh?
03:07Yes, Miss.
03:09Well, I've always liked the naughty ones best.
03:14Why, Margaret, what a thing to say to him.
03:18Well, I do.
03:19The good ones never seem to have the necessary imagination or initiative.
03:23I know, but I never imagined you felt that way, too.
03:30Margaret, tell me.
03:32Do you ever feel tempted to kick over the traces?
03:34Every spring.
03:36I never do, though.
03:38Too old and too ugly.
03:40Now, if I were your age and looked like you,
03:42and knew what I know now...
03:45You'll demoralize me completely.
03:47I've been longing to smash everything and run amok all day.
03:52When I was 28, a man smiled at me once in a movie.
03:56He looked like a mighty nice man, too.
03:59Really?
03:59And what happened?
04:01Nothing.
04:02That's just it.
04:03You mean you didn't smile back?
04:05Of course not.
04:06I was much too well brought up.
04:09But ever since then, I've wished I had.
04:12I went back there for years, but I've never had the chance again.
04:16Men don't smile at me much, either.
04:18Well, in your case, it's those eyeglasses you will wear,
04:21and the books you carry, and those flat-heeled shoes.
04:24Well, you know yourself I couldn't hold on to the job a minute without them.
04:26If I were your age, I wouldn't want to hold on to it.
04:30But I've got to hold on to it, Margaret.
04:32Jobs are scarce and hard to get.
04:34Jobs where a girl is safe.
04:36Well, if I had my youth over again, I wouldn't be so anxious to be safe.
04:45Miss Flatton?
04:46Oh, for me?
04:48Yes, Miss Flatton.
04:49I picked them myself.
04:50Oh, thank you, Sally.
04:54Violets and spinach.
04:55Both grow out of the earth.
04:57I'm spinach.
04:59A useful vegetable and full of iron.
05:01And nobody cares much about spinach.
05:04I never had a chance to be a violet.
05:07Much as I'd like to be.
05:08But you have.
05:10You're full of nonsense today.
05:13Dangerous, unsettling nonsense.
05:15What's got into you, Margaret?
05:16It's my birthday.
05:18I'm 40.
05:19You begin thinking a lot of things when you suddenly find yourself 40.
05:24But how can you suddenly find yourself 40?
05:26You can.
05:27Oh, I'm so sorry.
05:29I mean, congratulations.
05:31What for?
05:36Thanks.
06:12Eric?
06:15Eric?
06:17It's Saturday afternoon. How about the ending?
06:25Anne, what's happened to you?
06:27Nothing yet, Granny.
06:29Where'd you get this dress?
06:30I bought it. Out of the money I saved up.
06:33And I've kept out just enough to go to the Savoy for tea.
06:36Have you lost your wits?
06:37No. But I've just realized I'm 25.
06:41I'm getting older every day. Do you realize that, Granny?
06:43I'm getting older every day.
06:45But we all aren't.
06:47Yes, but we don't stop to think about it.
06:49Life goes on. And before we know it, our time is up.
06:52And maybe we haven't really lived at all.
06:54Lived?
06:55Silk. Real, sheer silk. Lovely things.
07:00One wearing would probably finish them. Not serviceable at all.
07:04But I don't care!
07:06Anne!
07:07Ever since Father died and you came to live with me,
07:10I've done exactly as you said to do about everything.
07:13I've worked hard. I've worn good, plain, serviceable clothes.
07:17I've borrowed books from the library to read and I've saved my pennies.
07:20I'm sure that was the wise way to live.
07:22But I'm tired of being wise.
07:25That sort of life is all anyone wants or expects when she's old.
07:29But I'm young and it's the privilege of the young to be foolish.
07:33I'm pretty. Do you realize that?
07:37I'm going to have one day of freedom from rules and regulations,
07:41from worry and responsibility. Yes, and from duty.
07:44For this one day, I'm going to do exactly as I please and done the consequences.
07:51You understand Delilah, don't you?
07:53You've been caged up too.
07:55Well, what the heck? You have a fling.
08:00Oh, the window's open, Anne.
08:02I know it. She's gone. She'll never come back.
08:06The cats will get her. Other birds will fight with her. She'll starve.
08:10Well, perhaps. But it'll be worth it to her to be free again.
08:23Watch the hack. I'll be back in a minute.
08:42All alone? Good luck.
08:46Since your mother told you it isn't safe for a pretty girl like you?
08:49Won't be safe for you if my brother finds you here.
08:52Oh, I can take care of myself. Don't worry about me.
08:57I won't.
09:00Waiting for your brother, eh? Is that the best you can do?
09:04You'll see in a minute.
09:06He's six feet, too, and he has a very quick temper.
09:09Oh, that's too bad.
09:12I'd hate to hurt him on your account.
09:17Say, you're kind of a cute trick, you know.
09:28I'll call a police officer if you don't go away and leave me alone.
09:31Go ahead. Call one.
09:35It's nothing, eh?
09:36Laying on to get.
09:37That's okay by me. You'll soon melt. They all do.
09:50Hey!
09:59I told you not to come here.
10:01Every cop in town knows you by sight.
10:03And as soon as they find that body, they're sure to start looking for you.
10:06They ain't found the body yet, have they?
10:07So why?
10:08Hey, some David stole our hat.
10:10What, with a stiff in it?
10:12What does he mean, with a stiff in it?
10:14Well, we didn't have a chance to dump him, Chief.
10:15Do you mean to tell me you rubbed him out and left his body in the car?
10:19That was a hot car. We stole it for the job.
10:21And it's parked right in front of this door.
10:23Well, we were gonna throw the guy in the river the minute we plugged him,
10:25but we saw a couple of suspicious guys looking, so we just drove one.
10:29Yeah, and then we find another spot and some kids breeze by.
10:32Yeah, we decided we'd wait until tonight.
10:34I see. So you bring him here.
10:36Hey, you don't have to worry. He's all covered up in the back.
10:39Covered up with what?
10:41With an overcoat, ain't he?
10:43What overcoat?
10:47Your overcoat.
10:48Miles!
10:49Now, wait a minute. Now, wait a minute, Chief.
10:51I forgot. As I was going out the door, I grabbed your overcoat by mistake and, well, I didn't think
10:57until afterwards.
10:58So, you covered him up with my overcoat, with my name and the label, and it's still over him.
11:03Is that the setup?
11:06I guess it is, Chief.
11:07Brad?
11:08I don't know how long you want to live, but I know how long you're going to live if you
11:12don't get that coat. Just ten hours.
11:15Yeah, but look, Chief.
11:15Grab Handsome's hack and follow that dame. No rough stuff. Just watch your chance and get that coat.
11:20But how do I know where she's went?
11:22You'd better find out, Red.
11:28And, Red, don't come back without the coat.
11:38Calling all cars. Calling all cars. Calling the highway patrol. Watch for stolen car. It's a Stevens night. M8. 12124.
11:47M for Mary. 8. 12124. Looks like a gang job, boys. Be careful. They're dangerous.
12:02Smokey George disappeared. The big shut car snatcher.
12:07I don't need no formal introduction to Smokey. As a matter of fact, I was just sitting there thinking about
12:12him.
12:13I figure he snatched that big limousine that was reported stolen this afternoon.
12:16I didn't hear anything about a limousine being snatched. What time is it missed?
12:20Am I aiming to get information from you, or are you aiming to get information from me?
12:25Which is working for who?
12:27Snuffy?
12:28Which side are you on?
12:30Are you a stool pigeon or not?
12:31If you ain't willing to live up to our gentleman's agreement of jewelry with me,
12:36I can sell my information someplace else.
12:38What information?
12:40You hold out on me, and I'll lock you up for a stuck in an opposite.
12:44The car was missed about 2 o'clock.
12:47Smokey didn't leave Snakey's till 2.30.
12:50Show him there myself.
12:52Just walked out casual-like and ain't been seen since.
12:56Well, then I guess Slick Capescu's gang got him after all, then.
13:00Yeah, that's what his dame thinks.
13:02She's going crazy.
13:04Says Smokey was on his way to meet her, and nothing would have kept him from keeping the date unless
13:09he was rubbed out.
13:30Did you hail me?
13:31Why, yes, I did.
13:34Did you want something?
13:35Well, yes, I must have.
13:36I mean, I did, of course.
13:37Otherwise, why would I have stopped you?
13:39Exactly.
13:40My car, you see, it is...
13:42What's wrong with it?
13:43Oh, heaven only knows.
13:44The ignition, or the carburetor, or maybe the battery's run down.
13:47There might be water in the gasoline.
13:49You know anything about cars?
13:53Not a thing.
13:54Oh.
13:54I suppose you've got a chauffeur to look after this.
13:58Oh, of course.
13:59And he's such a good mechanic, too.
14:01But, unfortunately, this is his day off.
14:04That's too bad.
14:06Yes, isn't it?
14:08Well, I can't get the darn thing to go.
14:09Would you mind giving me a lift to the nearest garage?
14:11Oh, no, I couldn't.
14:12I mean, I didn't.
14:13Really, this car, you see, I...
14:14It's courtesy of the road, you know.
14:15It's done every day.
14:16It's quite proper.
14:17It doesn't mean a thing.
14:18Oh, well, I suppose I may as well.
14:42It was marvelous luck you were coming along just then.
14:45Had you been waiting long?
14:46Years and years.
14:50Do you often go out alone like this on the chauffeur's day off?
14:53Uh, no.
14:54In fact, I've never done it before.
14:56It's a pretty big car for you to handle, isn't it?
14:58Oh, I find I can manage well enough.
15:00Though, of course, I've only driven small cars before.
15:03You see, uh, this isn't really mine.
15:06Your brother?
15:08Yes.
15:10I'm alone in the world.
15:11Are you?
15:12So am I, really.
15:14But I thought you just said that...
15:15Oh, not my real brother.
15:16Uh, someone who helped me once in a very critical situation.
15:20Helped me unwittingly, too.
15:21That was a wonderful part of it.
15:24Isn't this a garage we're coming to?
15:26Aren't you leaving me here?
15:27No, that is, I mean, yes.
15:29But that is, it is a garage.
15:30But you just can't go off and, uh, abandon me.
15:32I simply won't let you go.
15:34No?
15:34No, that is, not until I find out whether or not they can help me.
15:38Oh, very well.
15:39You make inquiries and I'll wait.
15:41Promise?
15:42Promise.
15:57Oh, oh, say, I left my car down the road a ways.
15:59A roadster, licensed PA-65.
16:01Will you pick it up for me?
16:01Sure.
16:02What's wrong with it?
16:03Nothing.
16:03I just want you to hold it here for me until I come for you.
16:08Okay, pal.
16:09Okay.
16:10Here are the keys.
16:15Can they take care of it for you?
16:17Yes, but it's going to take them a long time.
16:19It would be awfully dull waiting around here.
16:21Yes, I suppose it would.
16:23I know.
16:24We could have tea.
16:25That's right.
16:26We could, couldn't we?
16:28Of course.
16:29I know I shouldn't.
16:30Courtesy of the road, you know.
16:32Do you really think that covers it?
16:33I'm sure of it.
16:35Very well then.
16:47Where should we go?
16:48Well, let me think.
17:08You look as if you had a really serious question to answer.
17:11What?
17:11O-O-T?
17:13Well, how about the Chester Country Club?
17:15It's not far off.
17:17Surely that's only for members.
17:19Well, I thought you'd probably be a member.
17:21Anyway, when they know who you are, they won't make any difficulties.
17:24Who am I?
17:25I don't know, but you must be someone important.
17:28What makes you think that?
17:30Well, this car, and the way you look, and your manner, and everything.
17:37Can't always trust appearances.
17:39No, I guess you're right.
17:40But then, just the same, I'll bet we get in without any trouble.
17:43Oh, I hope so.
17:44Would be fun to have tea there.
17:45Maybe Slick's Gang picked up the car to give Smokey a ride.
17:49I'd like to get on the trail of that car.
17:52Might give me a lead to Slick's Gang, and if I could round them up, it'd mean promotion.
17:57Maybe to the Metropolitan Force.
18:03It's a missing car.
18:04I saw the license cover.
18:06And it went right by the police station.
18:08Who was in it?
18:08I couldn't see it.
18:09It went by too fast.
18:10But I'll get it.
18:12Hey, the speed limit is 20 miles an hour in that town.
18:15Was I doing more than that?
18:16Well, not more than three times, and we just passed a police station.
18:19Did anyone notice us?
18:21I think so.
18:21I see a cop climbing on his motorcycle and heading this way.
18:24Oh, dear.
18:25We'll have to lose him.
18:27I should think so, yes.
18:28You don't understand.
18:30There are reasons why it would be awkward if we were stopped.
18:32Maybe I can guess one of them.
18:33No, you couldn't possibly.
18:35I look so innocent.
18:36You'd never believe I could do anything so terrible.
18:42Can't seem to make it go any faster.
18:44What does the speedometer say?
18:46I don't want to take my eyes off the road.
18:47Well, don't.
18:48We're doing 80.
18:53I wish a truck would come along.
18:55What?
18:55To delay him, I mean.
18:57Look here.
18:57There's a right turn just ahead.
18:58Now, it's a bad road, and we might just manage it.
19:00He couldn't possibly.
19:01Where?
19:01Here.
19:13Is he following us?
19:15Yes.
19:19No.
19:21Not now.
19:26What's that popping?
19:27A pop gun.
19:29You mean he's firing at us?
19:30He's certainly firing in this general direction.
19:32Oh, dear.
19:33That's not just for speeding.
19:35He must know what I've done.
19:38I suppose you know whatever you've done.
19:40You've made me an accessory after the fact.
19:42Have I?
19:42Oh, dear.
19:43I didn't mean to.
19:45You can get out and leave me if you like.
19:48No one's seen you with me.
19:49Not to identify you, I mean.
19:51Except the fellow at the garage.
19:53Oh, that's right.
19:54I'm so sorry.
19:56Well, never mind.
19:57You get out, and I'll go back and do something about him.
20:00No, no, no, no.
20:01That's all right.
20:02I can take care of myself.
20:03As a matter of fact, I'm in the game, too.
20:06What game?
20:07Wait till we get somewhere where we can talk.
20:09Which way?
20:10Right.
20:12But we're doubling on our track.
20:13I know.
20:14Maybe we can lose him that way.
20:25What's the matter?
20:26Oh, Red, how are you?
20:28What are you up to, Snuffy?
20:29Trying to keep that car in sight.
20:30Follow it, will you?
20:32Follow it?
20:32What do I follow it for?
20:33Because the car's been snatched.
20:34That's what for?
20:35No.
20:36Yeah.
20:37I recognize the license number.
20:38I see.
20:39And I suppose the cops told you to be on the lookout for it.
20:41Hey.
20:42I heard you turn stool.
20:43Is that right?
20:44That's a dirty lie.
20:45I've been a crook all my life.
20:46Somebody's trying to ruin my reputation.
20:47Yeah?
20:48Now, I'm wise, I tell you.
20:49I happen to notice the name on the driving license on the shaft there.
20:52And I happen to know the police are looking for this car.
20:54Oh, dear.
20:55I hoped you wouldn't.
20:56Then you do know.
20:57Well, not everything.
20:59Who are you working for?
21:00Well, the government, in a way.
21:02The government?
21:03Yes.
21:04I know it's hard to believe.
21:05Not hard.
21:06Impossible.
21:07What am I supposed to think you are?
21:08A G woman?
21:09Of course not.
21:10I suppose you rubbed out that guy back there as a favor to the president.
21:14I don't think I quite follow you.
21:16You don't, lady.
21:17You lead them all.
21:23Perhaps it's indelicate of me to mention it, but I'm burning with curiosity to know who that stiff is behind
21:28us.
21:28Is someone following us?
21:29No, not following us.
21:30We're transporting him in comfort.
21:32The stiff.
21:33The body.
21:33The dead man.
21:36Hey!
21:44Is that really a body?
21:45Well, I haven't examined it in detail, but there is certainly the hand of a dead man back there.
21:49Oh!
21:56Hey, wait a minute.
21:57Wait a minute.
21:58But how did he get there?
22:00Well, that's what I expected you to tell me.
22:01Well, somebody must have put him there.
22:03How true.
22:04I mean, before I took the car, I mean, I...
22:06I didn't know he was there.
22:07Well, I wondered why you were driving him all over Chester County.
22:10Good heavens, this is awful.
22:12Has he been murdered?
22:13Well, that would be my guess.
22:14When people die naturally, you seldom find them wrapped up in the back of a car.
22:17We must get away from him.
22:18Oh, no, leave it here?
22:19It wouldn't be wise to do that.
22:21No, I suppose not.
22:23It would be awkward for us, wouldn't it, if somebody noticed it while we were having our tea?
22:27Well, what are we going to do?
22:29Thanks for that weed.
22:31I think the best thing to do would be to park it in the garage in the darkest corner I
22:33can find.
22:34Now, you go ahead and order, and I'll follow you in a minute.
22:36All right.
22:38Hey, you... you won't leave me, will you?
22:40Of course not.
22:41Come on.
22:42We'll see this thing through together.
22:44Lovely.
22:44I knew you'd stand by me.
22:50Brookes sure got swell hangouts these days.
22:52Yeah.
22:52You stay here.
22:53I'll look around.
22:57Hey, buddy.
22:58Any place a guy can use a phone around here?
23:00Around at the garage.
23:01Just follow this path.
23:10Let's go.
23:12Hey, buddy.
23:14Where's the telephone?
23:17It'll be all right here, won't it?
23:18I'm stopping this long enough to have tea.
23:20Yes, I guess it'll be all right, but...
23:22I'm locking it up because...
23:23Well, I've got something pretty important in it.
23:25Yes, sir.
23:26It'll be all right.
23:27Is there a telephone here?
23:28Right up in front.
23:43Hello?
23:44Give me the police station, please.
23:46Well, naturally the nearest one.
23:49That's usually...
23:50Great.
23:51It's been training that dame ever since she snatched the bus.
23:55No, I didn't have a chance to get it.
23:57Because she picked up some guy and ain't left it alone up until now.
24:02Now it's here in the garage.
24:04At the Chester Country Club.
24:06No, no.
24:06Not a chance.
24:07There's lugs all over the place.
24:10They're watching the cars.
24:11Yeah, it's still here.
24:13Look, Slick.
24:15I could shoot this place up and probably get away with it,
24:18but you said no rough stuff.
24:20Okay, okay.
24:21Just as you say, Slick.
24:22Yeah.
24:23I'll wait Hill Handsome shows up.
24:26Your pal is around with the garage using the phone.
24:28I want to use it too.
24:29Ain't you got one here?
24:30Yes, but I ain't supposed to allow anybody to use it.
24:32This once won't matter.
24:34It's important.
24:35I'm connected with the police and I want to report.
24:38Very well.
24:43Give me the police station in Ferndale.
24:57That you, Kelly?
24:59Snuffy!
25:00Hey!
25:01I picked up those parties you lost and trailed them to the Chester Country Club.
25:04I'll be right over.
25:08I hope there's not going to be any trouble.
25:10Not for you or me, son.
25:11If we mind our own business and keep our mouth shut.
25:14Fever too.
25:15Hot toasted muffins.
25:17Honey.
25:18Egg.
25:18Raspberry jam.
25:19Is that right, Miss?
25:20It looks heavenly.
25:21Will you sign for it, Miss?
25:23Uh...
25:23Oh.
25:24You can pay if you'd rather.
25:26It's just the same, Miss.
25:28I'd much rather.
25:29It, uh...
25:30It makes my father furious to get slips for afternoon tea.
25:33He thinks it spoils my dinner.
25:35I dare say it does, Miss.
25:38How much?
25:39Oh.
25:40Well...
25:40Oh, thank you, Miss.
25:41Oh, thank you very much, Miss.
25:49Did I see you, Bane?
25:53I didn't know what name to sign to the slip that wouldn't have got us thrown out.
25:57Anyway, it wasn't very much.
25:59It's worth it just to be here.
26:01You're a strange sort of crook.
26:03Well, I haven't been a crook very long, you see.
26:05How long?
26:06Well, just since today.
26:08Oh, I suppose I am a crook, even if I never intended to keep the car.
26:13But I'm afraid there's no way to prove that to the satisfaction of the court.
26:17No, I suppose there isn't.
26:18And then there's that passenger in the rear to explain.
26:21Unfortunately, he can't speak for himself.
26:23But I told you, he must have been there when I took the car.
26:26I just never looked back.
26:28Nor forward either, apparently.
26:30I wish you'd let me explain just how it all happened, will you?
26:33I certainly will.
26:34Considering the mess we're in, I think I ought to know.
26:38Well...
26:41That car still here?
26:42In there.
26:43But you ain't supposed to know me, see?
26:45Fred Egan's in there, too.
26:46He's one of Slick Capescue's gang and their dynamite.
26:50What's he up to?
26:50I ain't found out yet, but I'll keep trying.
26:52Okay, take care of yourself.
26:55I will.
26:58So, you see, I practically had to take the car.
27:01I see.
27:01Well, no wonder you had me guessing.
27:04What did you mean when you said you were in the game yourself?
27:07Are you a crook, too?
27:08Well, yes, but I wouldn't have told you, only I thought that maybe...
27:11Oh, of course.
27:12Well, I'm awfully glad you did.
27:14I can't tell you how it's relieved my mind.
27:17Relieved your mind?
27:18Well, yes.
27:19I mean, anyone else, no matter how nice or how willing to help,
27:22mightn't have been able to get me out of this mess.
27:25But being a crook yourself...
27:27Of course.
27:28I, uh...
27:29I suppose this is just the daily grind to you.
27:32One of my duller days.
27:35I suppose you think nothing of getting rid of stolen cars and bodies?
27:41Nothing at all, nothing at all.
27:46I'm looking for a stolen car.
27:47What kind of a car?
27:49A big limousine.
27:50It looks like an over there.
27:54See you later.
28:01Locked, huh?
28:02Yeah, he said he had something important in it.
28:04Swag, Nebby.
28:05He was alone, you say?
28:07That's right.
28:07What kind of a looking fellow was he?
28:08Just ordinary, I guess.
28:10You can't describe him, huh?
28:12Well, I know. I didn't pay much attention to him.
28:14Well, I'll wait here and see for meself.
28:21Where are we going now?
28:23I have to pick up the car.
28:24We'll have to keep driving around until it gets dark enough to get rid of that...
28:26Oh, I know. Don't say.
28:27I don't want to think about it.
28:29I'll just have to try and forget that he...
28:31...it.
28:37Did you notice that fellow?
28:39Yes.
28:39Ever seen him before?
28:41No.
28:41Well, he's been following you.
28:42And I rather think he could tell us a thing or two about our silent passenger.
28:46He didn't seem to notice us when he passed us just now.
28:48He just didn't want us to spot him, that's all.
28:50Oh, dear.
28:56I suppose somebody's noticed something.
28:58Oh, I locked the car.
28:59Oh, of course.
29:00Oh.
29:01No.
29:02What is it?
29:03There's a cop sitting on the running board.
29:06What do we do?
29:08Has he seen us?
29:09No.
29:10Not yet.
29:11No.
29:11Just follow my lead.
29:12Head up.
29:16Afternoon, officer.
29:17Anything wrong about that car?
29:19And what wouldn't be wrong with it?
29:21Oh, I just wondered.
29:22We happened to notice the fellow that was driving it.
29:24And we thought there was something distinctly fishy about him.
29:26Oh, quite definitely fishy.
29:27Yes.
29:28You saw him then?
29:29Well, yes.
29:30He was just ahead of us as we drove in.
29:32You don't know where he is now, I suppose, sir?
29:34Well, as a matter of fact, I do.
29:35I can point him out to you if you like.
29:37I'd like that very much.
29:39Well, you find our car, will you, Ann?
29:40And get it started.
29:40I'll meet you at the door.
29:42Come along, officer.
29:48He's a tough-looking customer.
29:49It's a lucky thing you're armed.
29:50I wouldn't want any part of him myself.
29:52Don't worry about me, sir.
29:53I'll bet not.
29:54With that kind, I shoot first and ask questions afterwards.
29:57Yeah, that might be the best for all concerned.
29:59Oh, there he is.
30:03You sure that's the man?
30:04Just look at him.
30:05What's he doing in a place like this?
30:07Would you say he had any legitimate business here?
30:09I'll soon find out.
30:22Hey, you!
30:24I want you!
30:26All right, go.
30:30Put him up!
30:31Reach!
30:37Bluffin', eh?
30:44And don't try any tricks.
30:46If you don't want a doctor working on what I leave intact.
30:49You'll hear about this when I see my mouthpiece.
30:51I'm an innocent man.
30:52Innocent to what?
30:53Innocent to what I done.
30:55Or I mean, I'm innocent.
30:57You're wanted for stealing Mr. Cameron's limousine.
31:00Who, me?
31:01If you didn't steal it, what are you doing with it?
31:03What am I doing with it?
31:04Why, have I got it?
31:05You left it back there in the garage.
31:08Ah, you're crazy.
31:09I left my car out at the gate.
31:11At the gate, huh?
31:12Yes.
31:13What do you call yourself?
31:15Red Egan.
31:17Well, Red Egan, come along.
31:21I'll soon find out about that.
31:23You get along to the gates.
31:24And don't try any tricks.
31:25Because I'm going to be right behind you.
31:28We made it.
31:30I know I shouldn't be enjoying this, but I am.
31:32It's all right when you get a lucky break like that.
31:34You wouldn't be feeling so happy if we'd been caught.
31:36I know.
31:37So let's not rejoice too soon.
31:39We're not out of this yet.
31:40Is that your car?
31:41You won't believe me.
31:43Ask the old guy that's sitting in it.
31:44Say, you.
31:45Do you know this man?
31:46Sure I know him.
31:47He's a pal of mine.
31:48What you done?
31:49I'm told he stole a limousine.
31:51Big Blackman.
31:53License.
31:53M-8-1-2-1-2-4?
31:56Yeah, what about it?
31:57Went shooting out that way about five minutes ago.
31:58What?
31:59Which way?
32:02Hey, come back here, you big lug, and take these things off.
32:05Where do you think I am?
32:07That young fella and that girl told me that...
32:11Hey!
32:11They were the ones in the car.
32:13If I get my hands on them, I...
32:16He couldn't get his hands on an elephant.
32:23Listen.
32:24You wait here for Hanson.
32:26Tell him I'll phone him when I find out where I can connect with him.
32:29Okay!
32:34It's like a terrible yet exciting kind of tag.
32:37Wait for pretty high stakes.
32:40I think for the time being, you better keep your mind on your driving.
32:42Oh, that officer couldn't possibly overtake us now.
32:45We had too big a start.
32:56Get going, our friend.
32:57The officer struck our trail.
32:59Oh dear, what a nuisance he is.
33:10He's gaining.
33:13I can't go any faster.
33:15Well, Zigzag, he's gonna start to shoot.
33:20He's gaining.
33:25I can't go any faster.
33:28Well, Zigzag, he's gonna start to shoot.
33:30Come on, Zigzag!
33:32Come on, Zigzag!
33:41Stop!
33:43Follow that limousine.
33:52Keep going.
33:52I think we've ducked him again.
33:53Hooray!
34:01Why is it making that funny noise?
34:03It sounds to me as if we're running out of gas.
34:12Luck's still with us.
34:13There's a gas station down the hill.
34:16We can make that easily.
34:26I'll give it a shove and we can coast down.
34:28Need any help?
34:29No, you just steer.
34:36Are the brakes off?
34:38No!
34:39Well, put them off!
34:43Well, put them on again!
34:50You'll have to come out and push too.
34:51We can manage, I think.
35:01Look!
35:02No wonder the gas ran out.
35:03That awful cop put a bullet in our tank.
35:06Now we'll have to abandon it.
35:08No use to get gas now, the tank won't hold it.
35:10I believe it would if we could get a cork to bit that hole.
35:13A cork?
35:13Well, come on.
35:14We're wasting time.
35:16And don't push from there.
35:17If it goes back, it'll go over you.
35:18Oh!
35:18I never thought of that.
35:21Now push!
35:24There we go!
35:26All right, hop in!
35:44Howdy, Miss!
35:45Hello, friend!
35:45What do you have?
35:46Gas, air or water?
35:47Gas!
35:48All right!
35:51How many gallons do you want?
35:52Oh, fill her up.
35:53Fill her up?
35:54Right up the top?
35:54Right up the top.
35:55Yes, sir!
35:56Oh, but we'll need a cork first.
35:58Eh?
36:00A cork?
36:01Yes, you see, we've got a hole in the tank.
36:03We've backed into a fence with fancy spikes on it.
36:05Oh, reckless driving!
36:07Aye, George, you young fellows are always in a hurry.
36:11Well, sir, buy a jingo.
36:14Looks exactly like a bullet hole to me.
36:16A bullet hole?
36:17What absolute nonsense.
36:19Why, what do you mean?
36:20What's the matter, Letty?
36:21Can't you take a joke?
36:23You don't look much like gangsters to me.
36:25No, sir.
36:26You look more like honeymooners.
36:29I don't expect to find machine guns or dead bodies in your car, now do I?
36:34Oh, no.
36:34Certainly not.
36:36So you want a cork, do you?
36:37If you don't mind.
36:38I'll get you one.
36:408-1-2-1-2-4.
36:438-1-2-1-2-4.
36:458-1-2-1-2-4.
36:4710-8-1-2-1-2-4.
36:50Hello, hello, operator.
36:51Give me a policeman.
36:52Do you think he suspects anything?
36:54I don't know.
36:57Huh?
36:58I want a policeman.
37:00Hello.
37:01Hello there.
37:02Say, what's the matter?
37:03Are all you policemen deep?
37:04Say, looky here.
37:05I think you got a hold of them gangsters and that car you warned us about.
37:08Yes, that car.
37:09Number M-9-8-8-9-1-1.
37:13Gosh darn it.
37:14It's all shut.
37:15Well, hold on.
37:16I'll get another look at it.
37:19Now, looky here, young fella.
37:20Don't you pull no gun on me.
37:21Now, tell me.
37:22What's the idea of trying to call the police?
37:24Well, well, I'll tell you why.
37:25We got a warning over the telephone to watch out for a car at all gas stations.
37:28Number 9-8-8-1-1.
37:29Well, I don't remember the number, but I know it's your car.
37:32I'm not going to protect you.
37:33Guys darn it.
37:34Why should I?
37:35Don't know you.
37:35Never heard you.
37:36Never seen you before in my life.
37:37I'm a law-abiding citizen, and I'm going to do my duty.
37:40That's right.
37:40But if you're not able to call the police, I can't blame you, can I?
37:43Well, who's not able?
37:44Why, darn darn it.
37:45Now, relax.
37:47Oh, gosh darn it.
37:49Hey, don't hog-tie me, young fella.
37:51You'll have the law on you.
37:52For this, you see, you'll...
37:52Help!
37:53Help!
37:54Hey, officers!
37:56Police!
37:57Gosh darn it.
37:58I'm going to get a hold of the governor of the state of Pennsylvania.
38:01You're certainly going to pay for this.
38:14I had stuff for gasoline, madam.
38:16Ranked negligence, that's what it is.
38:18You've just seen to it before we started.
38:20You know I don't like sitting in a smelly gas station while you fill the tank.
38:24I'm sorry, madam.
38:25I'll be as quick as I can.
38:26You'd better be.
38:27Sorry, but I'll see you released soon.
38:29You can console yourself with the reflection that you are martyred of duty.
38:32You're going to pay for it, don't worry.
38:35Madam, shut up!
38:35Let's go, lad.
38:37Hello!
38:38Anyone above?
38:42Hello.
38:43Looking for something?
38:43You don't run this place, do you?
38:44Who, me?
38:45No, no.
38:45I promise to keep an eye on it until he gets back.
38:47So where'd he go?
38:48Well, he went down that way, he said, to look at a car that's in trouble.
38:50He's only been gone a couple of minutes.
38:52You can probably catch him if you hurry.
38:53Well, maybe I'd better do that.
38:55My madam doesn't like waiting.
38:56No.
38:57He went this way, you say?
38:58That way.
38:59You'll see him somewhere around the next turn.
39:00Thank you very much.
39:01Come on.
39:02Come on.
39:06Come on.
39:08Come on.
39:08I beg your pardon, but your chauffeur has gone to look for the man that runs this place,
39:11and I thought maybe while you're waiting you might like a cup of tea.
39:14Tea?
39:15Hmm.
39:16Idea's good.
39:17The tea probably terrible.
39:20Well, it's something to do.
39:24There we are.
39:25Uh-huh.
39:29Oh, I'll see if the lady that's with me won't join us.
39:32She's probably bored with waiting, too.
39:33Pardon me just a moment.
39:34Yes, too.
39:35Come and have tea with this lady.
39:37There's nobody to wait on you, so you'll have to find it yourself.
39:39I'll be charming and keep her interested.
39:41Understand?
39:41I think so, but where's the little man?
39:45I'll explain later.
39:53What fun.
39:54I love things to happen unexpectedly like this, don't you?
39:57Isn't that pleasant?
39:58Well, the tea may not be perfect, but at least we can make it ourselves.
40:01That's a comfort.
40:03And I'm pretty good at making tea.
40:05Well, that's something.
40:17Wouldn't it be fun to own this place and meet all the strange people who stop here day after day?
40:22Most of them would be very ordinary and blasted down.
40:25I suppose so.
40:26But some would be interesting.
40:28One could speculate on where they were going and what their relationships were to one another.
40:33I always do that in buses and trains.
40:36Don't you?
40:37Yes.
40:38But I thought it was my own private game.
40:40I didn't know anybody else did it.
40:42I should think all lonely people do it.
40:45I mean people whose lives aren't very full and who haven't very interesting affairs of their own to think of.
40:49Isn't your life very full?
40:51It should be.
40:53Mine was when I was young and pretty like you.
40:55Sugar?
40:56Thanks.
40:58Maybe you don't think I was young and pretty.
41:01You ought to have seen me before the war.
41:03And please don't say what war.
41:06I wouldn't be so rude.
41:07No, I suppose not.
41:13Didn't you find him?
41:14No, I walked all over the place.
41:15I couldn't find any sign of a car in trouble.
41:17Well, that's funny.
41:18Well, anyway, I took the liberty of filling both cars while you were gone.
41:20Oh, did you?
41:21Yes.
41:21Your mistress, she's anxious to get going.
41:23She had some tea but she's rest with.
41:24Thanks.
41:24How much did you put in her?
41:26A car, I mean.
41:27Twenty gallons.
41:28You can leave the money on the counter inside.
41:34Already, madam?
41:35So soon.
41:37You've been quick, Mason.
41:39You'll telephone and come and see me.
41:40I will.
41:41And bring this young man with you.
41:43He's a reckless look that intrigues me.
41:45I always had a weakness for dangerous men.
41:48Thanks, if that's a compliment.
41:50Of course it's a compliment.
41:51I wouldn't have come in here at all
41:53if I hadn't thought you were going to give me knockout drops and rob me.
41:56But I'm not sorry I came.
41:59Goodbye.
42:00Goodbye.
42:01Goodbye.
42:19Goodbye.
42:21it. Is that where the little man is? I hope so. Come on, don't use tempting Providence by hanging around
42:36here.
43:06Come on, don't you?
43:24Stop that fool's arms. What does this mean? What the devil do you think you're doing firing at me, you
43:41blasted fool? Do you want to give me a heart attack? Come back here, you blundering calf. Where are you?
43:49What are you doing in that car? Why shouldn't I mean it's mine? According to information received by us, this
43:56car belongs to Mr. Lawrence Cameron, and it was stolen.
43:59What's that? Are you accusing me of stealing my own car? Are you Mr. Cameron? Do I look like Mr.
44:06Cameron? You blithering idiot. I never saw Mr. Cameron. All I know is this. He reported the loss of his
44:13car, and the last time I saw it, there was a young fellow and a girl in it. Where are
44:18they now?
44:19Perhaps you think I murdered them. Maybe you did. Oh! And maybe you switched cars with them to throw me
44:25off the set. Oh! There's that young fellow and the girl at the gas station, madam. They have a car
44:30quite like this.
44:30How clever of you to think of that, Mason. But their car was a Stevens Knight. The car that was
44:37stolen was a Stevens Knight. Then why'd you stop me? This car isn't a Stevens Knight, is it?
44:42Oh, no, but... Don't dither. Haven't you got the license number of the stolen car? I have. M8-12124.
44:50Well, then, does that number look anything like mine? It's identical.
44:55What?
45:05That's why he sent me on that wild goose chase. He wanted to switch the license plate when I was
45:09gone. And that's why he gave you the tea, madam.
45:11What was the license number on this car before they switched?
45:14You can't remember, can you, Mason?
45:16Well, no, madam.
45:18Neither can I.
45:20Where do you claim the place was switched on you, ma'am?
45:23On the turnpike, five miles back. But if you think those young miscleans are still waiting for you there, you
45:29poor specimen.
45:30You do them less than justice.
45:33You will tell my man to drive on.
45:38Go ahead.
45:49The old image is Mrs. Jefferson Breckenbridge. Isn't she a cocker? She's related to half of who's who. She's worth
45:59millions. Our license number was T563976.
46:06All cars, all cars.
46:08All cars, attention. Highway patrol.
46:45what did we come in here for it's safer where are we what place is this a crib i've had
46:50my eye on
46:51for a long time a crib yeah it ought to be easy to crack the family's away and there's no
46:56watchman
46:57now we can use it for a hideaway for a couple of hours and clean out the place
47:00oh there ought to be plenty of swag unless there are poor flushers and living beyond their means
47:03you mean you're planning to rob this house why not oh i don't want to be a thief not really
47:10but you
47:10are already you stole this car didn't you yes but that awful man frightened me into it you're gonna
47:15have a swell time convincing the cops of that if they nab you with it they won't they mustn't we
47:20must get it back to his rightful owner as soon as it's safe with the corpse still in it oh
47:24i don't
47:25know what to do about him it well we might leave it here for the family to find when they
47:30come back
47:31that's an idea and as soon as we're safe send a mysterious message to the police it's a pity
47:37you're losing interest in a life of crime you certainly get ideas where are you going to do a
47:42little belated investigating now you stay where you are for a minute
47:53it's like a tough hombre gangster i'd say old man one bullet wound and a peach of a shot
47:58he didn't bleed much don't i just thought maybe you'd like to know the car wasn't all messed up
48:06there's nothing in his pockets but he's got an overcoat over him that seems to be full of
48:10incriminating evidence i think i'll take it in with us examine it later
48:18you're not really going to break into the house why of course no use sitting here for several
48:21hours or trespassing anyway may as well go a step further into a bit of breaking and entering
48:25oh don't please don't now don't be silly you're cold i can see you shivering it's right i thought
48:32you were enjoying the thrill and danger and excitement of a life of crime not now it's dark
48:37well you trust me i'll see you through well i suppose i'll have to if you go i suppose i'll
48:42have to go too i can't stay here alone with a corpse wait don't make so much unnecessary noise
48:49now follow me suppose someone's here there's no lights besides i checked up on that we suppose
48:57they're a burglar now i put them out of commission a week ago when i cased the joint it was
49:01too near
49:01dawn to go over the place that night are you going in the front door it's the simplest way in
49:06the
49:06quietest besides the other doors might be barred from inside and the windows well i hate to mess
49:10about breaking glass now follow me it's a jolly little place isn't it oh i wish i were home with
49:20granny granny i haven't heard of her before i haven't thought of her for hours is she a young
49:25granny or an old granny a cocktail granny or a fireside knitting granny a fireside knitting granny
49:31terribly good well well it's lucky for you she can't see you now it is all the trustees at my
49:36school shh i think we better slip into the back of the house it's hidden from you by the trees
49:40and
49:40no one can see it oh dear is that safe quite safe they can't be seen unless someone comes snooping
49:52around and no one's likely to do that what a heavenly kitchen not bad i'll be glad you like
49:57it oh i'll have a fire going in a minute and we'll be beautifully snug are you sure the family's
50:03away
50:03i'm certain why well nothing's been put away properly oh the servants of the rich are very careless they
50:08save themselves as much bother as they can i hope they were careless enough to meet coffee and things
50:13like that oh they have and biscuits and jam and all kinds of canned and bottled things maybe they've
50:21even left food in the icebox well we can't use any of those things that would be stealing
50:27i know we can find out whose house this is and leave some money in an envelope to pay for
50:32everything
50:38oh what is it butter eggs cream well why not don't you see i don't believe this family's gone away
50:48at all but i tell you i'm certain but when are they supposed to have gone days ago but these
50:55things
50:55are fresh they can't have been here for days at that temperature of course
51:04you know i have a creepy feeling we're going to be unpleasantly surprised here at any moment
51:09it's nerves my lass you better watch them no really successful crook can afford to have them
51:14besides who'd know we were here
51:23hey handsome come here
51:27is that the bus up there say it looks like it to me right come on
51:36not hot water cold if you want to make good coffee but i've got the kettle boiling what am i
51:40going to use all this nice hot water for well you might boil a couple of eggs that's an idea
51:49well they're around here someplace probably inside they must have slick's coat with them too
51:56smoky joe's exactly as we left them but the coat's gone shall we go in and get it no
52:02they'll happen to bring it out to us certainly we're going in to get it come on
52:09you're awfully superior manners for a crook
52:11i know you see i'm quite unique in my line and practically at the head of my profession
52:14people trust me instinctively and that's a great advantage
52:17yes i can see that you must have had quite a good education
52:22served a term at yale you see i'm the black sheep of a very distinguished family
52:26i know that's hard to believe but then i'm not the only crook in the social register
52:30and some had big companies on wall street
52:35i'll take care of the day
52:50i'm burning
53:08and are you hurt no but i think they are i think you're right this one anyway he deserves all
53:14he got it hadn't been for him i wouldn't be here in all this mess well i can't hold that
53:18against him say he must be pretty badly burned we ought to do something about him i think you're right
53:32i think we just put this lump on him it'll melt i'll bet on it say he'll be quite a
53:38tasty dish when you finish with him
53:40how about a little parsley
53:42it's a mercy you hit him when you're dead
53:44can't feel a thing
53:46say what happened to the other one i might as well put him out of his misery too
53:49oh uh he had to leave in a hurry had something to attend to that uh wouldn't wait
53:56i think i'll have a look around for him and i'll just take this along in case
54:06well my high-handed young bandit we meet again fortunately for me it seems
54:12what are you doing with that one miss
54:14buttering him he got burned these actions will happen if people aren't careful i see the one in the car
54:21out there got killed
54:23yes but uh we didn't do that he's in your car you know did someone leave him there by mistake
54:30i don't know how he got there uh you see it isn't our car it's registered in the name of
54:36cameron
54:36yes but and your name's cameron isn't it
54:40i might as well own up i'm lawrence cameron and it is my car
54:43your car
54:44then
54:45you killed
54:46it
54:47no no the car was stolen early today that's why i hailed you when i recognized it but the body
54:51was placed in it after it was stolen
54:53but how did you know his name was cameron
54:55i guessed it might be you see you didn't look to me like ordinary thieves
54:59so i traced the license number on the car and came along here to find out
55:02but why here because he lives here
55:06then you're not a crook at all and we didn't really break in here
55:09no i just seized the opportunity to prove to you there's nothing in a life of crime
55:13i knew the servants were away you see and we had to wait and hide someplace till it was dark
55:16enough to
55:17hide that body no i'm not keen to have it found in my car
55:20of course not the police are such busy bodies and ask so many foolish questions
55:25but if that car was stolen where did you get it my child
55:28in the city it was parked near the curb and
55:31he frightened me so i jumped into it and drove away
55:34and he and his pal have evidently been on our tracks all day
55:37then my hunch was right
55:39i knew you wouldn't change those license plates unless you were in serious trouble
55:43and there's nothing i like so much as meddling in other people's affairs
55:47coffee i smell
55:48yes let's have it then we'll bundle these ruffians into the court
55:53drive the car back to where this child found it
55:57and let the clever police discover it
56:10no noise now and no tricks
56:12you're coming at us see
56:13either perpendicular or horizontal
56:15you wouldn't dare to shoot right here in the public street
56:18come on start stepping
56:20i guess we better they couldn't very well miss at this range
56:22come on get going
56:28all right
56:29all right
56:35they got him huh
56:37where red and handsome we ain't seen him these birds drove up in the car and parked it out front
56:42they're just gonna make a break when i grabbed him
56:44my coat still in the car
56:46we didn't stop to look
56:47it's there all right
56:48oh so you noticed it
56:50yes and what was under it
56:51so you noticed that too huh
56:54sit down i'd like to have a little talk with you
56:55but suppose that we don't want to talk
56:57we're awfully careful about casual acquaintances
56:59tough guy
57:00hard
57:01the kind of goes out laughing
57:03i'll bet you're not
57:04you're the kind they have to dope and put a hood on or they drag him screaming to the chair
57:07steve
57:09are you sure these two are trying to make a getaway when you grabbed them
57:11sure
57:12why
57:14well they're so cocky you'd think they were expecting the marines
57:19so this is the hideout of the gang
57:22what the who in the name of
57:23well if you like you can't shock me i know all the worst words in the dictionary

57:52i saw your two henchmen
57:54force my young friends to come in here
57:56i was in the car behind
57:57waiting to pick them up
58:00stupid of them not to make sure they were unobserved
58:02because i was free to send my chauffeur at once for the police
58:06what
58:07figuring i could easily hold your attention till they got here
