00:11The Australian Aboriginal Dreamtime Stories, tell that all things, plants and animals were created by Biomi, the Great Spirit, through
00:21Yi, the Sun Goddess.
00:23The animals came to being, after Yi, on Biomi's instructions, went into the dark caves, and her radiant light turned
00:33the shapes of rocks, into animals.
00:35Now no one knows what shapes the animals had, when they were first created.
00:41However, it is said that after a time, the animals became unhappy with the shapes the Great Spirit had given
00:48them.
00:49They had various preferences.
00:51Those who lived in water, wanted to walk on the land, those who walked on the land, wanted to fly
00:59in the air.
01:00Being ashamed of how they first were, the animals grew sad and hid themselves.
01:06The green plants, expressed sympathy, and became sad too for the animals that they wilted and died.
01:13The Sun Goddess looked down from the sky and saw the depth of despair and unhappiness.
01:20She came down to the earth, and asked what could be done to make the animals happy again.
01:26The kangaroo spoke up, that he wanted strong legs, so he could hop, and a long tail, so he could
01:33balance himself.
01:35The bat said he wanted wings, so he could fly like a bird.
01:40The lizard said he wanted legs, so his belly didn't drag on the ground.
01:45The sun goddess listened carefully, all the weather made their complaints.
01:50She grunted these wishes, and rose back up into the sky.
01:55However, the sun goddess knew these changes would not bring them happiness for long.
02:01The animals failed to understand, that whatever had an advantage, had a disadvantage.
02:07And that even with their new looks and abilities, all was not going to be perfect.
02:13They would have to endure some dangers or setbacks.
02:17For instance, the stick insect, wanted to look like a twig, but this would mean he would have to stand
02:25still for hours.
02:26Also, the mopoke, wanted large, shining eyes, but this would also mean he would have to live in the dark,
02:35and only hunt at night.
02:36This story, emphasizes that changing our appearance, and getting exactly what we want, doesn't guarantee us happiness for a very
02:46long time.
02:47We soon grow bored and tired of the new thing we have, or the new way we look, and we
02:54always want something different.
02:56Long term happiness is better achieved, if we bother more about the way we think and behave, the way we
03:03are inside, than about changing how we look on the outside.
