01:10Desire is socially conditioned in some kind of way and socially structured
01:14And once you kind of just free yourself up of that
01:17Of those social constructs
01:19Then you sort of recognize yourself someplace
01:21So I became a lesbian in my early thirties
01:27And I'm heading into my forties right now
01:30Thank God I became a lesbian too
01:33Because it was like a moment of like absolute comfort
01:55It took about
01:57I think about a year and a half
01:59Maybe for my mother to find out
02:03And it was the age-old ruse of leaving several books on the
02:08On the chest of drawers
02:12Safa was a write-on woman and lesbian woman
02:15My mother walked in, cleaned up the room
02:20And we were having dinner
02:22I don't know, that night or a couple of nights later
02:24And it was one of the rare occasions when my father was away somewhere
02:28And it was just my mother and my sister and myself
02:31And out of the blue, my mother said
02:33Julia, are you thinking of becoming a lesbian?
02:37And I just, I turned beet red
02:39And couldn't say anything
03:01Both feminism and lesbianism for me
03:05Are sort of inextricably tied
03:07I came out into a women's movement
03:10So it was a nexus of my becoming an adult
03:12It would be impossible for me to imagine myself as a lesbian
03:16Without the context of feminism
03:17In fact, I think I'm from the first generation of people
03:20Who have always been out
03:22And it's kind of interesting now that I'm in my early thirties
03:25And I see out lesbians my age
03:28In all areas of social life
03:30You know, bringing with them a certain kind of arrogance
03:32About being open, about being lesbian
03:35And certainly that's a product of feminism
