Le chanteur se confie à son ami de longue date, le journaliste Jason Fine, avec qui il revisite des lieux emblématiques de sa carrière et évoque la création des Beach Boys, ses diverses collaborations, mais aussi ses périodes de dépression. Ce document s'appuie également sur des images d'archives et de nombreux interviews d'autres artistes prestigieux, dont Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Linda Perry, Al Jardine ou Taylor Hawkins. .
