00:05Yo! Hi! I am your host for the main stage today, Tisha Campbell.
00:16Yes. And this next segment is one of my personal favorites, y'all. You're really
00:22going to enjoy this one because this next person, this next person was inspired by his
00:28own directorial series. And this next segment is also going to be a little interactive,
00:36okay? Because he has styled some of your favorite celebrities, including myself. When he did
00:46me for the Emmys, I didn't recognize myself, y'all. I was like, who is that? Okay? So
00:52I would like for you to give a warm welcome for your host, Ashley Dunn, who is going to
00:59be moderating for the celebrity stylist, Jay Bolin. Woo! Woo! Yes! Woo! Can we give it up for
01:13Miss? Yes! How y'all feeling? What's up, Nolens? What's up? What's up, Estes? Look, y'all look so good
01:23out there. How are y'all feeling? Y'all feel good? Y'all look so good. We got a nice
01:28crowd out here, too, right now. We do. We do. We have so many surprises, but we don't have a
01:33long time, but we're here for a good time. So let's get into it, Jay. Let's do it. Let's do
01:37it. Listen, I adore you. I love you. I feel like I've known you for so long. Yeah. We have
01:43such a good
01:43rapport and just the way you have blown up over the last decade, I would say. It's been so inspiring
01:50to me as a peer, as a sister. Tell the people out here that love you as well, how did
01:56you get your start in styling?
01:58Well, first of all, she said that she's seen things blown up. But if many of you know, like I
02:04know, things can look beautiful on the outside, but then what about your personal life that's really blowing up? What
02:11about your business that you feel like is really blowing up? So I want to make sure that I give
02:17glory to God in this very moment because there is no way that what you see right now would even
02:22be here in any kind of way if it was not for Jesus Christ.
02:25MySpace. So now let's talk about it. MySpace is how I got started.
02:32Oh, MySpace. And if anybody remember MySpace and the top 10 friends on MySpace, did anybody else know about MySpace?
02:38Show your age in the room right now. Yeah.
02:40So I have MySpace and my top 10 friends and I went on there and some call it manifesting and
02:46some call it flat out lying.
02:48And I said that I was a celebrity stylist on MySpace and I had never styled or met a celebrity
02:56in my entire life.
02:57And as soon as I put that on my page, celebrities started to call.
03:01Wow.
03:02And I'm from Mississippi. Where's my Mississippi family at?
03:05Down south.
03:06Right. So I am from Mississippi. And obviously that's not a place that people count as like the fashion capital
03:14of any kind of way. Right.
03:15Right.
03:15But there's some stylish people in the south that most people always underestimate.
03:19But a lot of the style that you see influence around the world is from the south.
03:24Right.
03:24I went to HBCU where my HBCU people at.
03:27Shout out to the HBCUs in the building.
03:28I went to All Cornstice State University.
03:29And that's literally where I learned fashion. That's where I learned style.
03:33And I come from a black girl mama and a black mama.
03:36Yes.
03:37And they did not play about when you walked out the house, you must look good, you must look like
03:40something.
03:41And so that's been my life.
03:43Wow. And you take that and shout out to the south because I feel like you're right.
03:47The south gets overlooked when it comes to it.
03:48Yeah, we get overlooked on style.
03:50Yeah, baby. The south has something to say.
03:52But I have a question for you because I see you dressing, you know, SWV and all of these celebrities,
03:59Tisha Campbell, just so many people.
04:01How do you differentiate your personal viewpoint with your clients to make sure that they step out and not only
04:10step out, but that they feel their best when they're stepping on screen or on a red carpet?
04:14How do you tap into your client's point of view also using your special skill set?
04:20I think it is about the client.
04:23So it's not necessarily about fashion.
04:25It's not necessarily about what you see on the runways.
04:28It's literally about that person's lifestyle.
04:31It's about their body type.
04:32Right.
04:33Everybody wants to be able to address their body type.
04:35Right.
04:36If there are any women in the room right now that's like, listen, I got on a spank right now.
04:39I don't want it on.
04:41I want to be able to address my body.
04:42Listen, I see them over here right now.
04:44And I'm going to get to y'all as well in a few minutes, but you have to address each
04:48person for their careers, where they're going.
04:50I don't dress people for their now.
04:52Right.
04:52I always dress people for their next.
04:54That's a word.
04:55Wait.
04:55Can we take that in?
04:56I dress people for their next.
04:57Tell people how they can do that in their own personal lives.
05:01So you can do that in your personal life by taking control of your own narrative.
05:06You have to stop styling the season that your life is in, in that particular moment, or what your life
05:12has been through.
05:13Because if you know like I know, nobody's thinking about style when you've just been diagnosed with cancer.
05:19Nobody's thinking about style when you can't pay your light bill.
05:22Nobody's thinking about style when your cars are being repossessed.
05:25Nobody's thinking about style in those ways, right?
05:27So you have to stop thinking about style in those particular moments and start thinking about style ahead and what's
05:33going to pull you out of those places.
05:35Because when you are style, it's prophetic.
05:38Fashion is prophetic to me.
05:39Right.
05:39It's something that you can see beyond that particular moment.
05:42And so I'm always challenging myself and my clients to see beyond that particular season.
05:47See yourself beyond that particular moment.
05:49Because we all know what it's like to get dressed in the morning, to go to the bathroom in the
05:53morning time.
05:53Yes.
05:54And you look in that mirror and it's the wrong because you didn't wake up like this.
05:58Right.
05:59And you look at yourself and you're like, maybe I have gained too much weight.
06:02Right.
06:02Maybe my age has taken over.
06:04Right.
06:05I don't have the money to get what I see all these other people on social media.
06:08You're scrolling social media first thing in the morning and the enemy tells you what you're not.
06:12And tells you all the things that you're not.
06:13Right.
06:14And you have to consistently remind yourself, I am made of Christ.
06:18God made me.
06:19He knew me before I got in my mom's belly and I am meant to be something great.
06:23Well, you have to style what you see yourself as.
06:26You can't just speak it.
06:27You got to put some action into it as well.
06:29Right.
06:30So that means going to your closet.
06:31Right.
06:32Finding that one blazer that you love.
06:34Yes.
06:34Finding that one pair of jeans that you love.
06:36Right.
06:36Because I have my oversized blazer on now.
06:38Which I love.
06:39Grab you a good blazer, a pair of jeans or a good pencil skirt or something and hit the streets
06:45with it.
06:45Right.
06:45You don't have to overly style yourself.
06:47You don't have to spend a lot of money to go out here to make yourself feel like the most
06:51fashionable person in the world.
06:52Right.
06:52Style isn't that.
06:53Style is what you make of it.
06:55It's not about what you see on social media.
06:57It's not about all the influencers that you see that's already killing the game.
07:00That can either make you or it can break you.
07:03Absolutely.
07:04Ooh.
07:05It can.
07:06That's a word.
07:07I feel like that's what makes you different in the game of stylus is that you tap fashion as a
07:14spiritual component.
07:15Yeah.
07:15So it's not just, oh, I'm putting on clothes.
07:18It's intention behind it.
07:19And I respect that and I love that.
07:21Because so many people, like you said, wake up and look at themselves and they're like, wait a minute.
07:25I come from a real place.
07:27I come from the South again.
07:28Right.
07:29And I watch my aunts and my uncles.
07:32I watch my curvy women that were around me growing up in the South.
07:35And they were trying to figure out, where do I get good clothing?
07:38Where do I get good style?
07:39I always heard the problems.
07:41Right.
07:41And so as I heard the problems, I said, one day I'm going to be the solution to those things.
07:44Right.
07:45For the ladies that can't find things that don't look like a mu-mu.
07:49And you wear a size 16.
07:50You're like, I'm not supposed to have a mu-mu on.
07:52Or for my ladies that's a size 24 that want to feel fashionable.
07:55Or for my ladies that wear a size 11 or 12 in shoes.
07:59Everybody deserves the opportunity to feel stylish.
08:03Right.
08:03And everybody has the control to be able to do that.
08:05And when I saw that there were problems there, I said, I'm going to be the solution for that.
08:10And here I am today, 18 years in the game, still solutionizing.
08:1318 years in the game.
08:14Before, yes, let's all give him a round of applause.
08:1818 years in the game.
08:19And we have a little treat because we want to bring some people up.
08:22But before we do that, you have so many things coming up.
08:24And I have to talk about it.
08:26You're now going to be tapping into a new era of J-Bowling.
08:30Oh, my God.
08:30Spill the tea.
08:31Tell the people.
08:33So there's House of Bowling.
08:34So everybody knows me probably from Stylish J-Bowling or as Shop J-Bowling online.
08:41And I have done well with that.
08:42And I thank God for that particular moment.
08:44But as life took a turn over the past two years, personally and professionally, I had
08:50to do something what we all like to call is a pivot.
08:53And so I took a pivot that I felt like, man, am I going to be, should I be embarrassed
08:58about
08:58this pivot?
08:59Should I not talk about it publicly?
09:01Should I hold it to myself?
09:03And should I just leave the fashion industry in general?
09:07And the Holy Spirit spoke to me one day and said, you should definitely not give up on
09:12it because you've been in the game for so long.
09:14It's not about what you have done in the past.
09:16I'm going to give you a fresh, clean start that has nothing to do with how many celebrities
09:21you style.
09:22I've styled 70 to 80 plus celebrities across the world.
09:25I've been in the most powerful rooms.
09:27I've been in the most powerful people's homes.
09:29I've been in billionaires' lives.
09:31I've seen and done it all.
09:33I've also had it all taken from me.
09:36And so now it's about styling every single thing that I see and being present in every
09:41single moment and being responsible with every single moment now as well.
09:45So it's not necessarily just about style and what I see fashionably.
09:49It's about styling my home.
09:51It's about styling my body.
09:53It's about being present in a moment.
09:55It's about styling every vacation that I have with my family and my friends.
09:59It's about literally being present.
10:00So House of Bowling is where I get a chance to do that.
10:03I get a chance to do my interior design.
10:05I get a chance to do my event production.
10:08I get a chance to do the home interior.
10:11I get a chance to do all the fun things.
10:13And for those that keep asking, will you bring back clothes?
10:17The answer is yes.
10:21The answer is yes.
10:21We get a round of applause.
10:22So House of Bowling, the clothing, let me tell you something.
10:26The clothing that's now going to be a part of House of Bowling,
10:29they are the most insane garments that I've ever in my entire career have worked with, ever.
10:37So what the people are about to witness is something that's going to blow their mind the way that's born
10:41my mind.
10:41Listen, you continue to blow our minds.
10:43And before you go, we want you to blow the minds of the crowd because the people are here for
10:47you.
10:48They love you.
10:48We love you.
10:49Let's bring up some people and, like, let's play a little bit.
10:53You know what?
10:53Because you're right.
10:54So I just said this earlier because we're in the South.
10:57I don't feel like the opportunity is necessarily just about me.
11:00It's not about Ashley.
11:01It's not about the big lights in the stage.
11:03It is about people.
11:05I am the people stylist, okay?
11:07The people.
11:07So I wanted to choose a few people, have a few people from the audience to come up that feels
11:12fashionable,
11:13feel good about themselves.
11:14And I want them to have the opportunity to speak on style really fast as well.
11:17So can y'all make some noise for the people that are going to come to the stage really fast?
11:21Because y'all know it takes some guts to give up on the stage.
11:23Okay, so let's bring out these fabulous ladies that were just out in the audience.
11:29Let's bring them out.
11:30Bring them out.
11:30Bring them out.
11:31Bring them out.
11:31Bring them out.
11:32Bring them out.
11:33I'm going to stand up for them as well.
11:35Yes.
11:35I'm going to stand up for them.
11:37Let's see.
11:38Okay, come on now, ladies.
11:40Oh, now y'all acting shy.
11:41Come on.
11:42Okay, now y'all acting shy.
11:43Come on now.
11:44We'll come out here.
11:44Y'all look so good.
11:45Y'all give it up for them.
11:46Show them some love.
11:47Show them some love.
11:49Okay.
11:50First of all, y'all are absolutely beautiful.
11:52And when it comes to style, I'm going to ask you all questions.
11:56Come on up a little bit.
11:57Yeah.
11:58When we talk about style, Ashley, you can come on up too.
12:00Okay, okay.
12:00I'm going to come on up too.
12:01I want to know from you what inspired you with your style today.
12:04First of all, you right here, you got an arm cuff on.
12:07You got the big earrings on.
12:08You got your silky, beautiful dress on real fast.
12:11Tell us what you, what inspired you this morning, honestly.
12:14I am styled by my stylist, Yo Love Styles, Yolanda Love.
12:18So she styled me for today.
12:20Wait a minute.
12:21Now we were supposed to be picking out everyday people in the audience and you can afford a fashion stylist
12:25to yourself.
12:26How do you get up on stage?
12:27I'm kidding with you.
12:28You look amazing.
12:29Your stylist did an amazing job.
12:30If there was one thing that you could have changed about your outfit today, what would that one thing have
12:35been?
12:35I think the shoes, I would have did something different, but I had to be comfortable in the conventions in
12:41it.
12:41All right.
12:41That's cool.
12:42That's cool.
12:42That's cool.
12:43All right.
12:43So I'm going to come on over really fast.
12:44I'm going to get between y'all.
12:46Hey, friend.
12:46How you doing?
12:48She's a little shy, so y'all show her some love really fast.
12:51Okay.
12:51All right.
12:52These moments right here will pull something out of you that you didn't even know that you even had, okay?
12:56But you can't come in the building with your face beat like this and don't think we're going to say
12:59something to you.
13:00So let's get to it.
13:01Talk to me about the layering and the mixed patterns.
13:04Yes.
13:05Just doing stuff.
13:06You're just doing stuff?
13:08What do you mean you're just doing stuff?
13:10Okay.
13:10So talk to me.
13:11The two browns together.
13:13So you put two browns together, but then you said, I'm going to layer all these necklaces up.
13:17Talk to me about the necklaces.
13:20She didn't even know she had necklaces on.
13:22She had to look down on her chin really fast.
13:25You're absolutely beautiful.
13:26You have a great style.
13:27I love the way that you mix your patterns together.
13:29You did an incredible job of making sure that if you're going to mix your patterns,
13:32make sure that you find the undercolor.
13:35She found the dark brown that's underneath here, and you pulled it out with both of these.
13:39And you got your cute little gold shoes on, too.
13:41What would you have done different?
13:43Is there one thing that you would have taken off today to change your look?
13:46Probably my shoes.
13:48You would have taken your shoes off?
13:49And what would you have put on with it?
13:51Probably some Ricks or something.
13:53You know what?
13:54Some cute little booties would have been cool, but baby, the way that this carpet,
13:59this concrete is set up out here, welcome to your shoes, okay?
14:02Welcome.
14:02You're totally fine.
14:04All right.
14:05You look like you know what you're doing over here.
14:07Let's talk about it.
14:09All right.
14:09So tell me, what inspired your style today?
14:12I would sum my style up to femininity and comfortability.
14:17Like, I'm a mama first, so all of my outfits were normally.
14:21Weekends, I'd be free.
14:22But normally, I like to wear clothes that are loose, comfortable things that I can move in.
14:27I love it.
14:28That's effortless.
14:29And then you put the big shades on with the ponytail because you didn't want your hair to swell today
14:33down here in this heat.
14:37So that I'd be fine for the rest of the weekend, enjoy the rest of Essence weekend.
14:41All right.
14:41So what made you put the red lip on?
14:45Coming from the cherries, so I put red lips.
14:49Red and yellow goes well together, so I kind of paired them because of that.
14:54All right.
14:55I think they heard you.
14:56I don't know if they heard you or not, but we're here to intercom right now.
14:59But you look beautiful, and your red lips are popping.
15:01Come on down to the side for me.
15:02Mm.
15:04All right.
15:05Our last one.
15:06Woo!
15:06Now let's just look her up from head to toe really fast.
15:09She look good, too, didn't she?
15:10Yes.
15:11Get into it.
15:12Because nobody going to outdo me with hats around here on the stage today.
15:17But I'm going to let you have it in this moment because you're killing right now, okay?
15:20You are.
15:20You're super cute.
15:21Talk to me.
15:22What do you do, first of all?
15:23Okay, so my name is Felicia Flores.
15:25I'm the creator of Baldicon, a nonprofit for Baldies with alopecia, lupus, cancer treatment.
15:30We have a conference, September in Atlanta, September 24th to the 27th.
15:34And I'm also a hairstylist.
15:35I work with Derek J as well.
15:37Oh, wow.
15:38Yeah, and I'm a flight attendant.
15:40I'm Jamaican.
15:40So we have plenty.
15:41Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
15:46Wait a minute.
15:47You're a hairstylist.
15:48And a flight attendant.
15:48You have a nonprofit.
15:50Yes, yes.
15:50And then you do what?
15:52You're a flight attendant?
15:53Yes, yes.
15:54Baby, are you doing hair on the airplanes?
15:57Yes, I'm trying.
15:58I'm trying to figure out how you're doing all this.
16:00I'll make my money any way I can.
16:02I'll bring my shears.
16:03I'll bring my stuff.
16:03We don't play.
16:04We don't leave no coins on the table, okay?
16:07I love it.
16:07I love it.
16:08Y'all give it up for us.
16:09Shout out.
16:09So it sounds like you're not necessarily just styling your body.
16:12You're styling that bank account too, okay?
16:14The bank account is popping right now.
16:16I love it.
16:16Okay, so let's talk about your style really fast, and we'll let you go.
16:19So tell me what inspired your look.
16:21Okay, so I'm a woman of a certain age, so, you know, I have a tummy, and I don't care.
16:25I got, like, two kids, three kids.
16:27So I like to wear things that are loose, and I like to go with things that I know are
16:32safe
16:33but still pop it.
16:34So I love accessories.
16:38Zara.
16:39Zara.
16:39Soon-to-be J. Boland.
16:41You know what I'm talking about that?
16:43But, yeah, I wear things that are loose, not tight.
16:45I'm not necessarily things that, you know, suck my stomach in.
16:49So just loose and comfortable, and, you know, I like to keep it funky.
16:54Ashley, you know how, first of all, so Ashley and I have known each other for how many years?
16:58Over 15 years.
16:59Over 15 years.
17:00Yes.
17:00I remember when I met Ashley online, she was doing influencers.
17:05She was one of the first influencers that I saw.
17:07Yes.
