Transcript
00:04You're watching INSTUDIO and today we have Gavin Leatherwood.
00:07Hi.
00:08Hello, how are you? Thanks for coming in.
00:10Good, man. Thanks for having me.
00:11How's life?
00:12Life is good, man. Yeah.
00:14Yeah.
00:14We're on this break right now, so lots of downtime.
00:17Now, when do you go back to filming part three?
00:20Um, at the end of April.
00:21Okay, so it's a good break.
00:21I believe our first day is May 6th.
00:24Now, you're here to talk all things part two.
00:27Yeah.
00:27Going into the new episodes, what did you want most from Nick?
00:30I definitely saw more involvement for him.
00:34I really just wanted to play with that relationship between Sabrina and Nick a bit more.
00:39I mean, I felt like those...
00:40Which you do.
00:41Yeah, which definitely happens and there was a lot of life there to begin with, I think,
00:45and it was just sort of fun to continue that and then I was hoping for it to get like
00:51into his backstory,
00:52which we certainly do too.
00:54And we see a lot more of Nick in season two versus season one.
00:56Was that always how it was originally planned out from when you first joined the project?
01:00I don't think so, dude.
01:01I came on...
01:03You were so good they kept you around.
01:05I guess I had manners or something.
01:07I was doing something right.
01:08I don't know.
01:09Yeah, exactly.
01:10Yeah, learned people's names.
01:12I don't know.
01:14I mean, I came on with like four episodes and then an additional, like a possibility of four more.
01:21And there was like that orgy scene in the first part.
01:27Yeah.
01:28Uh-huh.
01:29I was like not originally supposed to be in it.
01:32Be a member of them.
01:33Yeah.
01:34But I clicked with people and Chance was talking about it one day at dinner and he shot Roberto a
01:39text right then and there.
01:40I was like, yo, we should bring Gavin in on the orgy.
01:43And that's how I got in there.
01:44Now that was a scene obviously everyone talked about last season.
01:47What other scenes kind of stuck out for fans that they talked to you about that kind of maybe even
01:52surprised you?
01:53Everyone was really hung up on the last, like the last shot of episode 10.
02:00Yeah.
02:01Where Sabrina's walking down with the Weird Sisters and I'm sitting on the steps and she gives me a little
02:05wink.
02:06And initially like...
02:08Oh, that's like the final moment.
02:09That's the final moment.
02:10Like a lot of people reached out about that and it kind of surprised me because I was just sitting
02:13on the steps.
02:14But people were like, oh my gosh, Nick looks worried or you know, like what's, what's he thinking in this
02:19moment?
02:20I was like, I don't know.
02:21I was thinking that we're rapping after like in like an hour and I'm just staring down Sabrina.
02:27But people really like...
02:28Well, that was a moment that kind of took over and where we see Sabrina, where we see Nick for
02:33season two.
02:33Yeah, it sets it up really beautifully.
02:35When did you first get into acting?
02:36Can you kind of talk about that?
02:38Yeah.
02:38I grew up in theater.
02:39Yeah.
02:39That was like my first professional gig.
02:44I was six years old and I did Arthur Miller's All My Sons and very serious play to be getting
02:52into.
02:52And I loved it, man.
02:54It was like once I was on stage with an older gentleman who was playing pretend with me and like,
03:01you know, make believe with all these people and the lights and the costumes.
03:05I was just like hooked, man.
03:07You knew like that's what you wanted to do.
03:08I knew it.
03:09So I did theater like for most of my early, early ages.
03:13That's such a young age though to know what you want to do for your life kind of.
03:16I think I even knew it before then too.
03:18Did your parents like discourage you from doing it at all?
03:20No, no, no.
03:21They were very supportive.
03:22My mom was actually a general manager of a theater company.
03:25Okay.
03:25It was possible.
03:26Yeah.
03:26And I would go and sit with her and watch a lot of people, you know, audition and a lot,
03:30you know, see a lot of adults kind of, kind of...
03:33Did you put it into our audience right now?
03:35Yeah.
03:35Hi guys.
03:36Oh, hey.
03:37Applaud.
03:38How's it going?
03:38Wow.
03:40But I saw a lot of that, you know, a lot of the audition process growing up and how the
03:46shows came to be.
03:47And it was just like, it was always kind of in my head that that was something I wanted to
03:51do.
03:52Now for all of you as actors, I think probably what was really cool for you guys is when the
03:56two schools put on plays.
03:58So it was a play inside the show.
03:59Can you guys talk about filming those scenes?
04:00Yeah.
04:01That was so fun, man.
04:03And it took me back to theater days too.
04:05Like being on a stage and there were some takes where there's, you know, no one out there.
04:09So it was a little weird.
04:10But when the...
04:11Like now.
04:12Yeah, like right now.
04:13Hi everyone.
04:14Hey.
04:14But when the audience was filled up, it just felt like theater, man.
04:20And the segments were pretty quick.
04:22We like have three like beats to film, three different segments of that play.
04:27First when Chance has got is like ripping my wings off.
04:30And then, you know, the two like chummy scenes with Sabrina.
04:35Yeah.
04:35Super chummy.
04:36But it felt like a real play.
04:37Like it felt like you were watching a real play.
04:38For sure.
04:39Well done.
04:39Thanks, man.
04:40You probably get this question a lot, but are you similar to Nick at all?
04:42Or are you more similar to Harvey?
04:44You know, I think I pretended for many years to be cool like Nick.
04:50I...
04:50I talked...
04:51Got the leather jacket going on.
04:52Yeah, you know, this is all a facade, my friend.
04:54I came from theater and I did a...
04:57I did a tour for two years.
04:58So I was gone from school and I came back at middle school.
05:01Oh, right.
05:01I came back seventh grade and that's when everyone's developing personalities or egos maybe even.
05:06And, you know, judgment kind of starts to become a thing of society.
05:12Yeah.
05:13And I got teased a lot for having like a middle part haircut and orange cargo shorts and a roller
05:20backpack.
05:20I guess that just wasn't cool.
05:22I don't know why that's not cool.
05:23That sounds kind of cool.
05:24I think it's kind of cool.
05:25It's like hipster now.
05:26Look at you now though.
05:27That's just it, man.
05:28I hid behind a facade.
05:30Now, when you first joined the project, did you originally watch the original Sabrina?
05:34No, it was kind of on in the background when I was a kid.
05:37Yeah.
05:37To be honest, the Salem creeped me out.
05:40Oh, really?
05:41Genuinely scared me.
05:43Why?
05:43Because he spoke and in this one he doesn't?
05:45Because he was just like so like, I don't know, his movements and everything were just a little eerie.
05:51It's kind of like that Uncanny Valley where it's like sort of realistic.
05:55Yeah.
05:56But not enough.
05:57Because yeah, it's like a...
05:58Like just enough that you know the difference that something is fishy there.
06:01And I knew that as a kid and was like, no.
06:03Now, speaking of Salem, at the end of part two, spoiler alert by the way, we're gonna
06:09be talking about a bunch of episodes.
06:11Cover your ears and eyes.
06:11From part two.
06:12Salem does speak.
06:13What was that moment like on set for everyone?
06:15I wasn't there.
06:16Yeah.
06:18But I can tell you that when we read it, like when we did the cast read through,
06:21because we read the scripts before we shoot them.
06:24Was there a Salem there that was...
06:25There wasn't.
06:26And I'm so like, who the hell is gonna voice this guy?
06:30Because I'm curious what that voice is gonna sound like.
06:33But on the day that we read those lines, it was just like...
06:37All of our minds were blown like, holy shit.
06:39I'm shocked by it.
06:40Salem talks.
06:41Yeah.
06:41Because that's something I was wondering in season one.
06:44Why wasn't he speaking?
06:45People wanted it, man.
06:47Yeah.
06:47Everyone was like, the show, yeah, great.
06:49Why isn't the cat talking?
06:51Yeah, that's the most important thing.
06:52We deliver.
06:53It's okay.
06:53It happens.
06:55Speaking about another familiar, in one of the standout episodes, we see your love story
06:58with your former familiar, Amalia.
07:02And in that episode, like a lot in the show, we see dynamics of love, comedy, and specifically
07:08for you, romance, humor, sorrow.
07:11Can you kind of walk us through filming those scenes?
07:14Specifically that episode?
07:15That episode, yeah.
07:16Yeah.
07:17That was my...
07:18Because there were a bunch of standout scenes specifically, like with the little dance.
07:21Absolutely.
07:21Yeah.
07:22That episode was, I think it was my most heavily involved up to that point.
07:28Yeah, it was all about you pretty much.
07:28Yeah.
07:29And like, I remember working, I think I worked like one day less than Kiernan, which was
07:36like crazy because she's an animal and works every single day.
07:41Yeah.
07:41I mean, it's not the Chilling Adventures of Nick.
07:43Of Nicky.
07:44But like, she, you know, she just works a lot and I worked like just as much as her
07:48maybe, you know?
07:49Yeah.
07:50That's good.
07:50And I remember saying to the writer at the end of it too, I was like, I'll work like
07:54this every damn day.
07:55Like, this is the best.
07:57Yeah.
07:57And I really did enjoy that pace.
07:59I mean, you know, we were shooting at 3am running through the woods and there's this
08:04giant like, ATV, like off-road vehicle with a camera rig on it and I'm sprinting through
08:10the woods with a wolf on top of my head and it's freezing ass outside and you know, we're
08:16just, it's 2am and we're running through the woods and howling.
08:18Now, was Amalia like a CGI wolf because it's pretty terrifying and how did you portray falling
08:23in love with this terrifying?
08:24Yeah.
08:25Well, she's like my mother.
08:26Yeah.
08:26So like that's, that was sort of an easy thing to connect with, you know.
08:31What do you mean by that?
08:32Like the character because...
08:33Yeah, she like technically raised me.
08:35Because one of your parents passed away in the show.
08:37Yeah.
08:37I'm like kind of orphaned and then I was raised by this familiar in the woods which I don't
08:44really want to know the logistics of how all of that happened but...
08:48Explains a lot.
08:49I mean, Nick's a lady killer, man.
08:52He was raised by an animal.
08:55And yeah, I mean it was, Quentin is the guy who plays Amalia and he's in this, he's like
09:007 feet tall already as it is and then he's got this wolf suit on which adds another foot
09:04so it, I mean he looked like 10 feet and you know, it was kind of an interesting thing
09:11to be crying over my mom who's a wolf but there's a man inside the suit.
09:18There were just so many layers that the imagination needed to kind of like work extra hard for
09:23it.
09:23Like, there's a man in there.
09:25This show's wild, man.
09:26I don't want to do anything else.
09:28Wait, did you keep that wolf hoodie costume that you had on?
09:32I wish, man.
09:32If you should have, it's so cool.
09:33I would love to just like bust that out whenever, you know.
09:36You could have worn it here.
09:37I would have.
09:38Yeah.
09:38I would actually probably just sit in my apartment and stare out my window wearing it.
09:43If you'll be like...
09:43Doing your TED Talks on Instagram with your hood on.
09:45Exactly.
09:46We'll get some attention.
09:47What were some of your other favorite scenes for season two?
09:50The Valentine's Dance was really fun to film because, you know, it was just like a day
09:54on set with Ross, Jazz, Lachlan and Kiernan and I and, you know, we just danced all day,
10:00which like that's always fun.
10:02And also Dorian's Club, like we had a dance scene in there too.
10:07Pretty much any time we're dancing, we're having fun.
10:09Are you usually a good dancer?
10:10No, I'm awful.
10:12I'm really awkward.
10:13It's good you can admit that.
10:14Yeah.
10:14I just fake it though.
10:16That's how you have to do it.
10:17I try to like put the focus on Kiernan and I just like do it.
10:20A little bob.
10:20Just to like step back and forth to not overdo any.
10:24But when I'm on the real dance floor, I got some weird moves.
10:28All bets are off.
10:29All bets are off.
10:30It's awkward.
10:31In the show though, the spells are kind of tricky.
10:34Do you have trouble remembering them at all or...
10:37Can you recite one here?
10:42Which one was that?
10:43I don't remember, man.
10:44It's just somehow in my brain.
10:46I don't know why it's still in my head.
10:48Yeah, that's a tricky one.
10:49I don't know.
10:50I think...
10:51I think...
10:52I learned Spanish growing up in school.
10:55So like I had a little bit of an understanding with another language.
10:58Did I read somewhere that they're actually real satanic rituals or something?
11:02Or is that fake?
11:04It's fake news.
11:04If they are...
11:05Or something like that where you guys got them from somewhere?
11:09I don't know, man.
11:09Maybe that's made up.
11:10If that's true though, then they had us performing...
11:14Satanic...
11:15Satanic rituals.
11:16That's not true.
11:17What if something just like...
11:18We actually thought about that during the burial scene with...
11:22Or like the sacrifice scene in episode eight, I think?
11:25It's episode eight?
11:26Don't quote me on that.
11:27But we were like standing around a circle in the middle of the woods at night, you know, chanting some
11:31stuff.
11:32And we were like, what if something weird happened?
11:36Our imaginations.
11:38Hopefully you didn't bring any of that here.
11:39No.
11:40I cleansed myself.
11:41I saged before I came.
11:42Don't worry.
11:43Who in the cast do you wish you had more scenes with?
11:45Him included.
11:46Definitely Ross.
11:47Yeah.
11:48Like a love scene with Ross would be really cool.
11:51Shocker.
11:52Yeah.
11:53Sabrina's left alone.
11:53It's you and Harvey.
11:55We did a photo shoot where she was like in the background and he was like...
11:58He and I were like all romantic and stuff.
12:00No, I love playing with him.
12:02You know, it's always a good time on set with him.
12:05I got some scenes with Michelle which I was like really wanting and looking forward to.
12:10I will also say like I would love like a one-on-one scene with Richard.
12:15Because that man is just explosive and unpredictable in a good way.
12:20And like that's just really fun to interact with.
12:24Yeah.
12:25Now in the beginning of the season we see you and Sabrina kind of fighting for top of the school.
12:28Do you think Nick always wanted her to beat him and you guys kind of all come together and mess
12:35with the...
12:36I think his main agenda is to cater to her success.
12:42Yeah.
12:42You know, that's always kind of his forefront.
12:44Like he could give a...
12:45I almost said shit.
12:47Can I say shit?
12:47Yeah, you can say it.
12:48I said shit.
12:49You just said a satanic ritual you can say.
12:50I said shit, sorry.
12:51I think he could give a shit whether he's the top boy.
12:54You know, I think his greater agenda is her success.
12:59Well he declares his love for Sabrina and that was like a big moment.
13:01He loves her.
13:02Oh yeah.
13:03And they end up together.
13:04Yeah.
13:04Pretty much.
13:05Yeah.
13:06He steals her heart.
13:07I think in part two they're going to be more fans of Nick and Sabrina.
13:11Do you see that happening versus Harvey and Sabrina?
13:13Yeah.
13:14I mean I think we definitely get...
13:17We get a greater look at what they are as a couple.
13:22Yeah.
13:22So that curiosity will be quenched a bit.
13:26I'm still hoping for Team Harvey and Team Nick shirts.
13:30Okay.
13:30Just so I can wear a Team Nick shirt.
13:32You heard it here first.
13:32Hopefully you're not saying this in every interview.
13:34I know.
13:34Breaking news right here.
13:35Breaking news.
13:36Team Harvey, Team Nick shirts.
13:38Start them up.
13:38If the show were to end tomorrow though, who should Sabrina end up with?
13:43Oh man.
13:45Harvey dude.
13:46Really?
13:46I'm Team Harvey.
13:48They're like OG loves.
13:49As Nick I'm Team Nick of course.
13:52But that's just a character.
13:52Harvey's kind of annoying in the show.
13:55Don't tell Ross that.
13:56No, Ross is a great actor.
13:57Yeah.
13:58I don't know like their fight scenes are just a little weird.
14:00And then he finds a new love interest too.
14:02He does.
14:03He's like alright bye.
14:04You guys are all pretty good friends and you guys hang out a lot.
14:07What's your favorite memory hanging out with Kiernan and Ross?
14:11Oh man.
14:11That you can share.
14:13We, you know it was Kiernan's birthday actually.
14:15We had a little, it was Kiernan and Jazz and Ross and I and we just like had a little
14:21four-way little date and I went and had dinner at this, I don't remember the name.
14:26But like we just had dinner and drinks and then went out and danced a bit and just like,
14:33there's a photo of us floating around out there somewhere where it just looks like we're having
14:37way too much fun and that was the night that we were having absolute too much fun.
14:42And we were like taking, we did like a little photo shoot on this old disposable camera.
14:46That's awesome.
14:46At the end of the night.
14:47It's good you guys are all like in this together kind of.
14:49For sure.
14:50This shows a success and now there's part three.
14:52For sure.
14:53Speaking of, where we see Nick last, he's unconscious and being carried into hell.
14:59What can you tease about part three?
15:01I know nothing.
15:03Nothing.
15:03Okay.
15:03I know absolutely nothing.
15:04I wish I could tease anything.
15:06I wish I knew anything.
15:07Yeah.
15:08But I don't know a damn thing.
15:09Lastly, you're a musician.
15:11What can you tease about your new music for fans?
15:14Do you have any new music to share?
15:16I don't have any.
15:17The thing about music and me right now is that it's such a personal thing.
15:22I don't really feel the need to share it yet.
15:26Oh cool.
15:27It feels really therapeutic and it's kind of like a journal with sound.
15:38And playing a character is one thing.
15:40It's like, here, here's a character.
15:42Like, that's not really what's happening deep in here.
15:46And like.
15:46Music is, it's you.
15:47Yeah, man.
15:48And like, you know, I want to maintain a little, a little bit of my self.
15:55Self, yeah.
15:56Yeah.
15:56That's important.
15:57Thanks so much for being here.
15:58You can catch you on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, part two.
16:02Now on Netflix.
16:03This was fun.
16:03Thanks.
16:04Should we do a walkout?
16:04Yeah, let's walk out.
16:05Bye.
16:08Come here.
16:10Oh, that.
16:11Don't mess with that set.
16:12It's okay.
16:14Hey, everyone.
16:15You're watching in studio.
16:16Hey, everyone.
16:17You're watching in studio.
16:19Eh.
16:20Do a little off the wall.
16:22Oh, that doesn't feel that in studio.
16:29And, help me make all our doors.
16:29I'm eating unless I'm back in studio.
16:29Yeah.
16:29It hurts right to do it.
16:29And the five stars.
