00:00All right, everybody, welcome to Suede Stage, everyone.
00:05The barbershop has been long been more than a place for just a haircut, right?
00:10It's where style, culture, and community come together.
00:14Today, Maurice of Durio's House of Style shares the techniques, artistry, and expertise behind
00:21creating the perfect cut.
00:22Please welcome Maurice.
00:51I don't have nowhere to, nowhere to set my tools.
01:00These days are nobody.
01:01I just hope...
01:22Damn, man.
01:23I ain't bringing no neck strips.
01:25Oh, my God.
01:28You want to hold her, dude?
01:30You want to hold her?
01:46Let me know if you need anything else.
01:47All right.
01:47God.
01:51Hmm.
01:59...
03:08Say it again.
03:10First of all, I'd like to introduce myself.
03:12I'm Maurice Dorio of Dorio House of Style here in New Orleans.
03:17I'd be honored to see any of you all at Dorio House of Style.
03:20We're at 1832 Gentile Boulevard, right across from the world's famous fairgrounds.
03:25And I am Maurice Dorio.
03:27I will be taking care of my lady right here.
03:33A lot of my clients are ladies, and a lot of them like a low cut.
03:38So I was one of my stylists, one of the clients here, so I could give her a cut today.
03:45Her name is Linda, and I'll be honored.
03:48Like I said, we're going to cut her down real low and give her a little tapered on both, on
03:53the sides and the back.
03:55We're starting off with a little low cut.
04:18We'll start off with a low cut for Linda to take her down.
04:44And also, this is what inspired me to be a barber.
04:48I come from a lawyer's family, and we always took care of one another.
04:52We wanted to groom one another before we go anywhere.
04:54And that was some of the things that we got into, making sure everyone was halfway groomed before we go
04:59anywhere.
05:01And that's what inspired me to be a barber.
05:08And I had a friend that was a barber also that kept me close to the barbershop all the time.
05:14So I was always in the barber atmosphere.
05:26Barbershop in my neighborhood is always the pillar of the community.
05:30I've only been in the location only 37 years.
05:33And a lot of people like to come to the barbershop, to vent and let it go.
05:38And maybe the barbershop is the only place where they can really kind of talk about it, you know.
05:45Most of the time when you're at home, the old lady don't want to hear nothing you've got to say.
05:49So, hey, you just go down and talk about what's going on.
06:04And just to be in a pillar of the community, a lot of information comes to the barbershop
06:09and a lot of information is given out at the barbershop.
06:11So a lot of people be looking forward to hearing what's going on from the barber.
06:16And being a barber is also good to be a good listener because everybody wants you to hear what they've
06:23got to say
06:24and also want your opinion on it.
06:26So it's good to be a good listener and have a good advice for them if it's okay, you know.
06:42We're just taking her hair down to a low length that it's very comfortable for.
06:48Like I said, she don't like doing much more than brushing it.
06:51And that's what we're going to give her.
07:07And some of the fundamentals of being a good barber is really understanding what a person really want
07:13before you get started on her head.
07:15If you know what they want, you can give them damn near what they want if you know what they
07:19want.
07:20So we want to make sure that is clear before you get started.
07:45What else do we need to talk about?
07:58And over at the barbershop is maybe some of the places where you meet some of your best of friends
08:03and get some of the information that you may need to know about.
08:06Communication is very important because, like I say, that's the only way you're going to know what's going on
08:11when you communicate with one another.
08:13You'd be surprised what you can learn from listening to one another, you know.
08:17There's always something that you can learn.
08:37Go right here, dude.
08:40Go right here.
08:56And since I've been doing the barber, for quite a few years, there's quite a few things
09:00that have changed in the barber.
09:02For example, your tools, like I said, most of the tools were mainly plugged in and now
09:08you have them tools with a wireless where you just come on and do what you got to do with
09:12your tools in your hand.
09:14You don't have to worry about the cords and all that different stuff in your way.
09:18But for the most, like I said, just mainly taking care of what needs to be done.
09:26Hey, Mr. Dorio, I think we may have...
09:31And also in the barber, since you're going to be working all day, the best what you do
09:36is learn how to work your chair and work your instruments.
09:39Like I said, the whole while I'm cutting mainly, I'm standing in one place.
09:43I'm not running around the chair.
09:44I'm not leaning over.
09:45I'm just...
09:46I got good parts about myself and that was going to keep you from getting tired working
09:50all day.
09:58And it's really good.
10:04It's really good.
10:08When I get one shot, one piece, it's worth it.
10:16And this is really good.
10:18It's really good.
10:18So, we can go to the kitchen.
10:19A lot of fun, as well as the as well as the middle is up this way.
10:21It's really like, there's a lot of fun.
10:21All right.
10:23She's going to go to the next.
10:24She's going to go to the next.
10:28Are we going?
10:29Wait, wait, wait.
10:30I'm back.
10:32Well, at the barbershop, quite a few of your different city leaders and I say all the different judges and
10:43different ones that come to the barbershop, like I say, makes a great communication spot, you know?
11:08Now that I've taken her hair down pretty much to the lint that she may be, that she's asking for,
11:13you do a little brushing and kind of shaping it up for her.
11:19I want to make sure she's looking very, she's groomed very well.
11:23And.
11:53All right, now we're just going to taper your sides and your back.
12:01And you're tapering to make sure you're getting your edges down close and blending on in with the rest of
12:09it.
12:10But you want to taper it down.
12:14I like to leave a nice finishing look with the hair more smooth and groomed real well.
12:19All right, now we're going to go.
12:54All right.
13:01And you're tapering.
13:02You're just blending it in.
13:04You start off very low and just blend the rest of it.
13:07Blending it all in where it all will look very smooth.
13:19one thing about this particular client i can't take her hair down too low because she's always
13:25like it lower when i finished she actually said she always tell me you could have taken it down
13:30a little bit more a lot of time the bar was also
13:40okay
13:53well you need to learn what you need to do and do it when you get in the chair because
13:57a lot of a lot of
13:58clients don't like to sit and like to wait too long getting their hair cut so it's damn near
14:03important that you have we get get get done what she needs or what they need at in a short
14:09period of
14:09time it's always good to take time with you with your client but at the same time some clients don't
14:16like to don't like to be in the show too long you notice when they're taking it in make sure
14:24everything
14:25is pretty much smooth and she loves she loves everything real close i'm trying to make sure
14:30everything is all right for her
14:54and over at durio's house of style it's one place where everybody loves to meet one another
15:01and like i say throughout the neighborhood and throughout the community durio house of style
15:06is very highly recommended
15:31time is up
15:33all right
15:37time is up
15:38time
15:40time
15:41time
15:41time
16:03it
16:17All right, yes indeed, I'm truly honored to be here, and if you're ever in New Orleans
16:29at 1832 Gentile Boulevard, please stop by. You get to meet Dorio and also some of the staff.
16:35They are very friendly, and we'll be honored to meet you.
16:51Say it again.
