00:00Hi, this is Mariah Gullo from The Hollywood Reporter and this is Meet Your Emmy nominee and I have Mindy
00:04Sterling with me today.
00:06Hi. Hi Mindy, how are you? I'm good, how are you?
00:08So this is a very special Meet Your Emmy nominee because this is a very unusual thing.
00:14You are nominated twice in the same category.
00:17Yes I am and I find that intriguing and fun and silly and I am delighted.
00:24Can you take me through how you found out about the double nominee?
00:28Well I knew that I was being nominated but didn't know yet that it was like the actual nomination.
00:38And I was on a plane, I was coming back from Vancouver and I was working.
00:43So when I landed and everybody goes to put their phone on because you're not supposed to have it on,
00:47it just went crazy.
00:48I mean it just went wild and dinged and phone was ringing and I read it and I just wanted
00:55to tell the entire plane
00:57but I felt if I yelled I could have caused an accident.
01:00So I couldn't wait to get off the plane to then start, you know, making all the phone calls.
01:04But yeah, so that's how I found out.
01:07Yeah. And your nomination is Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series.
01:12And it's for two shows, Con Man and Sex and Execs.
01:16Yes, two different, you know, I mean they're both funny, they're both interesting and different and, you know, I just
01:24sort of feel like it's a win-win already.
01:25I mean, yes, would I love to have that little statue?
01:29Yes.
01:31But my goodness, I, you know, I got nominated twice, I'm up against myself.
01:36It's so crazy.
01:37Bad or good or indifferent, I don't know, it's just kind of a crazy cool thing.
01:41Yeah.
01:41And we had Alan in here, Alan Tudyk, who's also from Con Man.
01:45And he had such nice things to say and he's definitely rooting for you.
01:50I love him, I just absolutely, we get along so well.
01:54I am so glad that he, you know, brought me on board to be a part of his show.
02:00I love the concept, I love the idea of it.
02:02And he's just a lovely man and I too would love to see him get it so we can get
02:07it together and then be a big phenomenon.
02:10So let's talk about Con Man first.
02:13You play Bobby, his agent, Alan's agent, and he plays Ray Neerly, who is a real stretch for him as
02:22an actor because he's playing a sci-fi actor who is unsatisfied with his career.
02:30Very good.
02:31Well, very down and out.
02:32He doesn't feel that, I guess, the show that he was on, you know, was over and he just doesn't
02:37have a direction and no one is calling him and giving him the kind of things.
02:41You know, he's studied theater, he's done this and that and so, you know, everything is just about, you know,
02:49things that he feels are beneath him.
02:51And I sort of resurrect his career in terms of, hey, I think you should do the Comic Cons because
02:58that is where you get your fans back and you kind of get your career back.
03:03Which he doesn't agree with and doesn't really want to do it, but somehow I coax him into doing it.
03:07And, but in a way, I'm also kind of a narcissist where, oh, I get to be in the limelight
03:16as well because I was once an actress and so I will ride on his coattails and also be there
03:24and have everyone look at me.
03:25Right.
03:26Bobby's a pretty outrageous character.
03:28She's an awesome outrageous character, which drew me to her and I love the idea, I came up with the
03:35idea of just wearing a different wig for each episode.
03:39Just that it's…
03:39Oh, it was your idea.
03:40Well, he wanted me to be 80.
03:42When I met with, when I met with, yes, with Alan, he was like, I don't know, I was thinking
03:46maybe she's like in her 80s and I went, come on, Alan.
03:50I mean, you know, I could probably pull it off, but oh, I'm going to look horrible.
03:54And so I got him to sort of stretch like maybe early 70s, which is a huge stretch.
04:02And, but I think I just coaxed him away from it.
04:04Well, this is what I think she should wear and, and she'll, maybe she'll have the different wigs on for
04:08every, you know, there are people that are like that.
04:10Maybe she has really bad hair and she's got a disease.
04:12And so she just keeps putting different wigs on and different looks and he bought it.
04:19You know, when I was watching the show, it is because you're wearing different wigs.
04:24At first, it's kind of disconcerting because you're like, oh, who's this new character?
04:27Oh, really?
04:28Oh.
04:28Oh, it's Bobby.
04:30And nothing is ever brought to the attention.
04:32It's just who she is.
04:33Yeah, it's just, yeah.
04:34Absolutely.
04:35It's like putting on your earrings.
04:36Yeah.
04:37So, like I said, Bobby is pretty outrageous.
04:40She does some pretty crazy things.
04:41Has there any, has there been anything that's been cut out because it was too crazy?
04:46Oh, I don't think so.
04:47I think he likes all of the crazy.
04:49I think he likes all of the inappropriate.
04:50I know that she, she eats like a basket of, you know, fruit and drinks his wine that is sent
04:57to him in his room.
04:58And he comes in and I've already taken a bite out of every apple and every piece of fruit and
05:03just, it's mealy, don't even touch it.
05:05And she loves to drink and she does sleep around.
05:08So, he has to deal with, you know, where is she now kind of a thing.
05:13No, I don't think so.
05:15I think she, I mean, everything you see I think is the mastermind of Alan, where he just wants to
05:22make it as, as raw and as horrible as possible for her.
05:27What was your favorite episode to film of the second season?
05:33Well, I love, I'm in two different outfits.
05:37I am in a flamenco outfit in one thing, trying to allure and meet this director that has hired Ray
05:48to do something.
05:49Of course, I would like to be a part of it as well.
05:51So, I, you know, do anything to get his attention.
05:54And then I switch to the cabaret outfit.
05:58If she has, she has just absolutely no mind as to what is appropriate, what is not.
06:04And he is trapped in, in hanging on to her.
06:08We did that and then we also did the musical, the, um, Of Mice and Men musical with Lou Ferrigno.
06:13Mm-hmm.
06:14And me as, um, is the young girl, the young, oh, je know.
06:18And so I got to sing, so that's fun.
06:21Um, but yeah, it's crazy.
06:22That was really, yeah, amazing.
06:25Um, do you think that, uh, uh, there's like this real balance of like the satire and surreal.
06:32Um, where does your comedic style originate from?
06:38Wow.
06:38Um, you know, I grew up, uh, watching Carol Burnett.
06:42Um, Lily Tomlin, you know, everybody from Laugh-In.
06:46But my dad was a, was an actor and he was a comedian and he was a singer and he
06:51was a performer.
06:52So, I knew I got a lot from him.
06:55Yeah.
06:55Um, I have a very animated family.
06:58My mother was as animated and very emotional and I was like that.
07:02Um, so, but I'm sure I, you know, took that on from my dad.
07:06But those were the influences in my life was those kind of people that, you know,
07:11you watched and made you laugh and you thought, I want to do that.
07:16I think I can do that.
07:18So, yeah.
07:19That's wonderful.
07:20And I was shy.
07:21Yeah.
07:22I think having like my dad, having that kind of personality, I was a little intimidated.
07:27And when I said that I wanted to act and how he, um, you can tell he was incredibly pleased,
07:34but he was very, um, you know, very rigid, you know, about what I should do.
07:40And I remember at 13, he said, um, if you, if you do Shakespeare, then you can do anything.
07:46And I'm thinking at 13, I don't want to do Shakespeare.
07:49I don't even want to do it now.
07:50And I remember, oh, I remember on Saturday, I had like a, um, an acting teacher that would
07:57come over to the house and we would work on Shakespeare, which was horrible for me.
08:02I was terrible.
08:03I never did my homework.
08:04I never, and she, at one point she finally said, you know what, Mindy?
08:08I don't think this is your thing.
08:10I'll, I'll talk to your dad about it.
08:12So I got out of it, but, um, yeah, I think he just, he was proud of me, but I
08:17think he
08:18wanted me to go beyond where he went.
08:21And, um, so I think that he would be delighted of all this going on.
08:27It would make him very happy.
08:28Yeah.
08:28What did it take to kind of, uh, bolster your courage as far as your acting career?
08:33Um, like, when did you kind of feel that you, uh, turned over from kind of just being
08:40under your father's shadow to like coming into your own?
08:43Was there like a moment?
08:44I don't know if there was a moment.
08:46I know that, you know, I did theater, local theater in Miami, Florida, where I'm from.
08:50So I did a lot, I did a lot of theater there.
08:52I didn't really do any television or films.
08:54I didn't really have an agent because I was young.
08:55I left Miami when I was like 22 or 23.
08:58So when I came out to LA, that's when I got, you know, heavily involved in the profession
09:03of it.
09:04Um, and, um, I think for me that gave me such confidence and such, uh,
09:09the tools that I needed to do what I do in this business is, um, working at the Groundlings
09:15and being a part of going to school at the Groundlings, studying with the Groundlings,
09:18being a part of the company.
09:20That, those are my, that's my family.
09:22That is where, um, I really did get courage and I really did take risks and I became a
09:28teacher.
09:28All of that, it's still implanted in me.
09:31I love improv to death.
09:33Yeah.
09:33And, um, that is, uh, that's like my home away from home.
09:38Oh, wow.
09:39Uh, well, what's your, what's your favorite thing about improv?
09:43Is there like a certain exercise that you really like to do?
09:45I know that there's a lot of different types of improv now.
09:49Um, and I know the Groundlings has kind of their own specified type.
09:53Well, I think everybody, yes.
09:54I mean, I know the Groundlings are really, um, we really teach, um, the art of character
10:01acting.
10:02Mm-hmm.
10:02So that's all about, you know, really where things and information comes from is for the
10:07character.
10:08Mm-hmm.
10:08And because I'm a character actress, that is, um, that's my home.
10:12That is where I, I'm not witty, um, I'm funny, but I'm not witty.
10:17I don't come up with funny, um, quick little, you know, jokes.
10:22Um, I just do what the character would do or how we work together.
10:26And, you know, if I was your mother, I know how to be that way.
10:30I can be overbearing or disruptive.
10:33So for me, it's really just behavior, um, and how you deal with whatever information that
10:39they give you.
10:40I find that very exciting.
10:42Mm-hmm.
10:42Mm-hmm.
10:42Is there a character that you've ever kind of dropped, that you kind of drop into all
10:47of the time?
10:47Oh, yes.
10:48Well, yes, my Jewish mother.
10:50Uh, which my mother was never this Jewish.
10:53Um, but my grandmother was.
10:55My, my step-grandmother was.
10:57Um, it's, it's like a sort of a second nature thing to me.
11:00I mean, that people think that I'm from New York.
11:02And I'm always like, well, I'm from Miami, same thing.
11:04You know, all the New Yorkers come out there.
11:06Um, so that's easy for me.
11:08But, um, I love different characters.
11:12I love, I love putting on a wig.
11:13I love putting on an outfit.
11:15I completely change.
11:16I love finding out, you know, who these people are.
11:20And that's really just from observing and being around.
11:23I mean, be careful.
11:23I may do you someday.
11:25Um, but in a very endearing way, because we're so beautiful and wonderful.
11:29But, um, that is, that's what fills me.
11:32Yeah.
11:32Oh, that's awesome.
11:33Yeah.
11:34Um, so let's talk about your other nomination, which is Sex and Execs.
11:38I don't know why I have a really hard time saying that.
11:40Everybody does.
11:41Sex and Execs.
11:42Everybody does.
11:42It's not sex and exes.
11:45It's sex and execs.
11:46Yes.
11:47Now you have a stellar, uh, writing cast on this.
11:51Can you talk about the writers on your show?
11:52Well, yes.
11:53I mean, they, they, um, they worked on, um, The Golden Girls, on Roseanne.
11:59Um, Stan Zimmerman created this show and co-wrote and directed it.
12:05And Stan and I go way back.
12:06We did a play together out here many years ago.
12:09It was our first sort of, um, coming together.
12:12And when we worked on this play, it was Gemini.
12:16Um, we instantly became this like, oh my God, we could never do anything without each other.
12:22So, but we have, um, but he does, he directs a lot of theater and I love theater.
12:28So I've done some stuff theater wise.
12:30And so we just have this, this wonderful relationship.
12:33And when you told me about this part, Sherla, um, I thought, oh my God, how fun.
12:40You know, the, the, the, the older, more wiser, more veteran of the office.
12:45I'm the secretary, um, and I've been around a long time.
12:49I do what I need to do.
12:51I know how to get what, what needs to be done.
12:54Um, and I'm very content.
12:56We're, all the young people are like wanting to climb the ladder, blah, blah, blah.
13:00And I'm pretty much, all right, well, I'll give you the, the info, but I'm not going anywhere.
13:05So, don't rock my boat. Yeah.
13:07So between Sherla and Bobby, who, if you get called up for, if you get not, um, if you win
13:14your Emmy for either one, who's coming up to the podium?
13:17The other one's going to feel so bad.
13:20I'm going to have to console her like nobody's business.
13:24Um, wouldn't that just be a trip to see me just go through a metamorphosis?
13:29You know? Yeah.
13:30Um, no, I think that they would totally support each other, but I will have to have literally two different.
13:37And thank yous.
13:38Yeah.
13:39You know, in terms of thanking people.
13:40Do you have two speeches prepared?
13:42Well, I, you know, in my head, as we all do, I think in our lifetime, you know, since we
13:47were little.
13:48Um, okay, so when I win an award, I'm going to say this and this and that.
13:51You know, whatever I plan or think about, I will go up and completely mess it up because I will
13:57be in another world.
13:58Yeah.
13:59Um, and then I will leave and beat myself up for not doing the funniest thing that I could have
14:03ever done.
14:04Yeah.
14:04But because I'm an improviser, it's probably best that I just let that be and see what happens.
14:11Oh.
14:11But I do want to thank certain people.
14:13Sure, sure.
14:14So names will probably be the one thing that I want to put on a list because I don't want
14:18to later on go,
14:20Oh my God, I forgot to, you know, thank every, I mean, all these amazing people that made it happen.
14:25Hmm.
14:25I never thought about how exciting it is to see an improv person come up and do it.
14:30Well, now you're putting the, now you're putting the pressure on me because I don't know.
14:32I'm not saying I'm going to be brilliant because like I said, I'll get up there and I could be
14:37completely like,
14:38Oh my God, just a blabbering mess.
14:42But, um, yeah, it'll, it'll be interesting.
14:45Yeah.
14:46I'm sure it'll be great.
14:48Um, so what are you most grateful for when it comes to your acting career?
14:52Oh, good question.
14:53Um, when it comes to my acting career, well, I'm always grateful when people like what I do.
15:01I mean, when people think I'm funny and they, they, you know, they, um, appreciate my humor,
15:07they appreciate whatever I can give to the piece or, um, you know, there's just, there's, there's so many elements
15:15to it.
15:16Cause sometimes you do look at something and you go, this isn't funny.
15:19And they really want me to make this funny so I can only do what I would do.
15:23And you appreciate when somebody appreciates what you do.
15:27Um, and I'm, I've been really blessed with a lot of people through the years that got to know me.
15:34And that is, they're not putting me, they're not sticking me in a bubble going, well, she can only do
15:39this.
15:39I can do so much.
15:41So in the beginning, like when I did Austin Powers, everybody wanted me to recreate that.
15:47And that was hard for me to do.
15:48Same accent, same personality.
15:50Yeah.
15:50She's German or Russian or, you know, Scandinavian.
15:53And it was just like, okay, it's all going to sound the same.
15:55Yeah.
15:56It's all my accent sound the same pretty much.
15:59Um, but, um, so then, you know, it's a matter of somebody giving you that opportunity to
16:03open up and, oh, you can do other things.
16:07So that is the gift.
16:08And I think the groundlings really has been a gift for me to allow me to cultivate and find
16:15out who I am as an actress.
16:17Yeah.
16:18And, uh, what is it that challenges you the most?
16:23Learning lines.
16:25I have, yeah, that's a tough one for me.
16:29I think, um, you know, just our minds are filled with so many different things going
16:36on.
16:37And some people I think can regulate it better than me.
16:40I get caught up in, oh, okay, well, I know kind of what to say.
16:44Maybe that's my improv, you know, background.
16:46But I think that is to me is like the biggest challenge is, uh, am I going to remember that?
16:52Yeah.
16:52Am I going to remember that and I freak out?
16:54Yeah.
16:54Yeah.
16:55Yeah.
16:55Uh, Jane Lynch was here.
16:57Yes.
16:57She, uh, she had some advice for auditions and she said either be completely on book or
17:03completely off and do a cold read.
17:05But don't do the in between.
17:08Well, you know what?
17:09I, I think that's, that's smart.
17:10I mean, I get, I try to get familiar with it.
17:13Um, but I think we're all a little nervous.
17:15Yeah.
17:15And some people are great about it.
17:17Some people, they have a photographic memory.
17:19They can, I can study something and study something and then I get there and, um, it just
17:24isn't, doesn't all come together.
17:27But I want to look like I know what I'm doing.
17:29So again, that's where you'll go, you know what?
17:32I can improvise.
17:34So if it's not perfect, I'm not going to lose who I am or the character that I don't
17:38want to give up.
17:39Yes.
17:40So, and I think that that's what they want to see too.
17:42They don't want to see you go, Oh God, can I start again?
17:45Or the wonderful thing though nowadays is the art of the video.
17:50They can redo it.
17:52I've gotten many a time.
17:53All right, Mindy, you know what?
17:55Let's do that again a little smoother.
17:56Yeah.
17:58So it's just like, Oh, thank God.
18:00Um, so yeah, but I agree.
18:02Yeah.
18:02Um, okay.
18:03So we have, uh, four questions before I let you go.
18:06Okay.
18:06It's, uh, first best, last worst.
18:09So every question starts with one of those things.
18:12Okay.
18:12First acting job that made you think I've made it.
18:18Oh, wow.
18:19First acting job.
18:21Um, well, I don't know.
18:22I don't know if I did something, but I don't know if that was, I made it.
18:26I, you know, I have to say Austin Powers.
18:29I mean, that was, because that was the biggest at that time.
18:32That was the biggest for me.
18:34Um, but it wasn't my first acting job, but that was the acting job when it got all the
18:41accolades and everybody that I thought, wow, I'm in something really special.
18:45So then the doors opened.
18:47So I'd have to say that made me feel like I made it.
18:50Nice.
18:51Um, best story you have from the set of Con Man or Sex and Execs?
18:55Best story?
18:56Yeah.
18:56Just the fun story on set.
18:58Well, Con Man, um, Alan gives me some of the craziest dialogue.
19:04And I, not only will I not remember it, but I can't even pronounce half the stuff that
19:09we were doing.
19:11And, um, there was, I had to play a ninja and we were backstage and we went into, I guess,
19:18like some room and I'm giving him information and I had to say, I still can't say it now,
19:22but I had to come up with this person's word.
19:27Um, and he'd go, no, it's not that.
19:31It's, and then he would give it to me and then I literally would listen to him, shoot,
19:35and I would say it wrong.
19:36So that was like, I couldn't, I never could say it right.
19:40I think at one point I did eventually, but it was, I was sweating bullets and thank goodness
19:46that Alan was such a wonderful person.
19:48He wasn't like, you know, hitting me with a whip or anything, but that was insane.
19:53And I know you stayed committed to your ninja character.
19:55Absolutely.
19:56I mean, and there were times where I really thought that I said it right.
20:00And then, no, Mindy, oh, God.
20:03All right, let's try it again.
20:04You know, I mean, I really, in my mind, yeah.
20:07That's great.
20:09Last time you were recognized in public?
20:12Today.
20:13Oh.
20:15I don't want to, you know, but I love it.
20:20I know some people don't, but if you're in this business, you better get used to it.
20:26And I do.
20:27There's always somebody that will just nail me and know who I am or look at me or ask me
20:35or give me free coffee or...
20:38Oh, free coffee.
20:40I mean, I don't have a, I don't, I know, literally, I was at Starbucks the other day and I
20:45went up and I said,
20:46oh, can I have this and this and that?
20:47And she goes, I'm going to get it for you.
20:49And she gave it to me.
20:50I go, how much?
20:50And she goes, oh, no, I know who you are.
20:54Nice.
20:54I mean, come on.
20:55I know that sounds so, like, little, but that's a huge thing for me.
20:59Yeah.
20:59And the fact that somebody says they like you and I want to give you free coffee, I mean, I
21:04should have tipped her, but I didn't.
21:06That was horrible for me.
21:08But, no, I get children.
21:10That's the other thing I get because I've done kid shows.
21:13Yeah.
21:13And my favorites are the children, like, at Target or something, and you're going down aisles and they're following you.
21:20And they're looking like they're not, they don't want to, and I'll look at them and I'll go, hey, come
21:25here.
21:26And they walk in and I go, what are you looking at?
21:29I don't know.
21:30And I go, do you think you know me?
21:33Yes.
21:34I go, what do you know me from?
21:36Oh, I'm Carly in Ant Farm.
21:38I go, that's right.
21:40And, you know, and then you just make them, you know, just say, see, I'm not scary.
21:44It's totally okay.
21:45You can say something.
21:46I love it.
21:47So, that, I love that stuff.
21:49I really do.
21:50That's really true.
21:51I love kids.
21:52Kids and dogs.
21:53Kids are awesome.
21:55Worst, oh, yes, this is the last one.
21:58Worst audition experience.
21:59All of them.
22:01Every one of my auditions are literally anxiety.
22:07Super stressful.
22:07It's very stressful.
22:10Well, this is what I tell people.
22:12You know, as someone who auditions a lot, is I've made, I've really thought about what
22:20we have to go through as an actor.
22:21Do you act?
22:22I don't.
22:23Okay.
22:24Well, this is what we go through.
22:25I'm going to tell you.
22:26So, then you're going to go, oh, goodness, I'm never going to want to act.
22:29You get the information maybe a day before, maybe three days before.
22:35You go over it.
22:35You work on it by yourself.
22:37Horrible.
22:38Then you have to decide on the day of the audition what to wear.
22:42Okay?
22:43How to wear your hair.
22:44This is for girls.
22:44How to wear your hair, makeup, all this kind of stuff.
22:46You're going over it and you're over and over it.
22:48Now, you have to live your life as well.
22:49You have to walk the dog.
22:50You have to discipline your child.
22:52You have to clean up the hair balls that your cat just threw up.
22:58You have to answer phones.
22:59Then you drive in traffic to the audition.
23:02You're sweating.
23:03You're trying to go over your lines.
23:05You get there.
23:06You walk in.
23:07You see everyone you know.
23:09And unfortunately with me, I want to talk to everybody.
23:12And I'm casting it.
23:13And it's not me.
23:16Then you're like Mindy Sterling.
23:18You're like, okay, here we go.
23:19Then you go in and you're thinking like, I know it.
23:21I know it.
23:22And I walk in and I'm like, fuck.
23:24Oh, sorry.
23:25And then you get somebody that's behind the camera.
23:29Because a lot of times the people aren't there.
23:32Mindy.
23:32Oh, my God.
23:33It's so good to see you.
23:34We're chatting, chatting, chatting.
23:36Are you ready?
23:37I guess.
23:38All right.
23:39And then you do it.
23:41And they're laughing.
23:42They're laughing at you.
23:44Oh, my gosh.
23:45Oh, Mindy.
23:47There's nothing I can say.
23:49And then you leave and you get in your car.
23:52And you're beating yourself up.
23:55And it's like, why did I do this?
23:57Why did I do this?
23:58And you never hear from them.
24:02So that is what we go through.
24:04And that is acting.
24:05And that, my friend, is acting.
24:07And it's surviving that kind of stuff day after day after day.
24:12So when I get a call and they go, yeah, they just want to book you.
24:14What?
24:15They don't want me to audition?
24:16No.
24:16All right.
24:18I am thrilled.
24:20It's like, I can do it.
24:21That part I can do.
24:22So, yeah.
24:24Mindy, I think you deserve an Emmy just for having.
24:27Just for going.
24:28I'm not sweating now.
24:29Yes.
24:29I think that anybody who is an aspiring actor should listen.
24:33And this is my other thing really quick.
24:34But you know what I've learned to do after?
24:36Always give yourself a, because we really do go through a lot.
24:39I always give myself a little treat.
24:41So I know this sounds silly, but maybe I'll have, I'll go someplace to eat that I really
24:46like, or I'll get some nail polish, or I'll, you know, go buy a blouse.
24:51I feel that we don't give ourselves as actors enough encouragement and enough good for you.
24:58You did all that.
24:59Whether you get their part or not has nothing to do with your talent.
25:02You were called in.
25:03So they like you there.
25:06But it is exhausting.
25:08Yeah.
25:09Self-care is the best way to keep your self-esteem intact.
25:12Yes.
25:12Go get a massage.
25:13Yeah.
25:14That works.
25:15All right.
25:16Well, Mindy, thank you so much for dropping by.
25:18Thank you for having me.
25:19And good luck on Emmy's night.
25:21We'll see you.
25:22Yay.
25:23I hope so.
25:23In September.
25:24Yes.
25:25Bye.
25:25Bye.
