00:02once upon a time hey there there lived a fair maiden and a handsome prince it's good to be
00:10back named daphne and ian one day daphne inherited an ancient castle in a faraway kingdom called
00:20france people keep asking us if living at the chateau is like a fairy tale and it is but
00:30these joys are rotting this fungus growing from the ceiling we've got a huge problem
00:36daphne and ian's destiny oh no is to rescue the castle from ruin will daphne and ian's fairy tale
00:45whoa become a nightmare or will they live happily ever after i hope it's happily ever after that's the
01:09best option
01:11oh it's tony and t-bone go say hi ikea
01:17how's it going yeah good thank you for coming back yeah that's all right sit sit
01:24thanks guys finding tony was a blessing for me and daphne because we tried working with other
01:32contractors but as soon as tony arrived at the chateau he was just the most relaxed dude with
01:38everything we just immediately felt like this doesn't have to be stressful and he can figure it
01:45out that sounds like we're saving 200 000 it's gonna be a lot cheaper he's almost like our own
01:51private mentor that's impressive who we expected to be a contractor turned into family did you guys
01:58get everything done you need just about it was absolute chaos tony and his wife decided to sell
02:04their house which means that tony had to go home for a few weeks because they have a lot to
02:09sort out so
02:10what you've been doing while i was away well we managed to redo the toilets in the chateau oh really
02:15turn them into powder rooms they look fantastic oh good when we have all of our wedding guests
02:21come to the chateau they're gonna be like hey just go wash your hands it's a pretty cool bathroom over
02:27there but we did kind of pause the gatehouse the job's too big for us to do without you okay
02:34and there's
02:35granny because last time i was here she looked a bit shocked granny would like to move to the
02:41gatehouse the gatehouse is barely standing i've kind of devised a plan that the next time my grandma
02:57comes we have the outside pristine so that she can really get encouragement and excitement about the
03:03house oh she's super oh yeah she's not been back since you were here i think she's just
03:24impatient with the whole thing so if we can get it done within the next five weeks
03:29okay well granny wanted to move in in three so okay i've pushed it to five
03:36do you want a coffee or do you want something stronger yeah if i'm gonna have a coffee before
03:41we start with tony's help we've already transformed the gatehouse exterior into something straight out
03:47of a fairy tale but inside it's a shell the original blueprint was pretty standard with two bedrooms and
03:55a bathroom upstairs but we've ditched one bedroom opening up the top floor to create a mezzanine
04:01we've also exposed the roof to the rafters to create a spectacular double height ceiling
04:06granny has no idea that we changed the plans but i'm sure when she sees her light-filled new home
04:12she will love it the budget for the build is a hundred and fifty thousand dollars granny is contributing
04:19a hundred and twenty thousand and ian and i will cover the rest you got it yeah now tony's back
04:27it's full speed ahead with the gatehouse fantastic this is the best bit when it's at this stage and
04:34you start putting it back together start building again yeah we've rebuilt the floor to granny's mezzanine
04:39bedroom put up the walls for her ensuite bathroom and insulated and drywalled
04:49there's so much more space up here than i thought there would be it's all right ain't it
04:54the next job is to lay the flooring upstairs so we're going to start from this wall and move out
04:59that way they've gone for a tongue-groove pine floor and now goes at an angle when you lay tongue
05:06-groove
05:07flooring you fix a nail through the tongue and then punch that down flat so that the next grooves and
05:12sit over the tongue without it being obstructed by the nail just for added strength we're gluing it down
05:17as well thank you i heard that any noises that you expose the baby to while they're like in utero
05:27they'll be able to sleep through it when they're born so being around a bunch of construction more noise
05:33we can throw now better for you when you when you have the baby exactly are you considering finding
05:39out what the sex of the baby is part of us really wants it to be a surprise and at
05:44the same time we
05:44really just want to know did you guys find out when you guys had your boys no we didn't we
05:49we did want
05:50it to be a surprise have you got any inkling i think it's a boy but i don't i you
05:55can be whatever
05:56you want oh yeah exactly when their babies just can't stop staring at them you lay awake all night
06:01listening just listening to them breathing it's some crazy experience but it's absolutely beautiful
06:06yeah you're gonna be a great mum i'll do my best
06:19i like this color it's nice isn't it something about beige that's so much better than white
06:24it's warm how are you feeling about your french exam do you feel ready
06:30not quite i'm terrified part of the visa process in france is a test on my french language comprehension
06:38problem is if i don't score high enough they might not renew my visa so yeah no pressure
06:43should we just speak french all week then baguette gato chateau see i'm practically fluent
06:54yeah that's what i said what i find confusing in the french language is that different nouns can be
06:59masculine or feminine but it's not always what you might think for example la barbe is beard and that's
07:06feminine la moustache mustache also feminine but le baby which is baby is always masculine even if it's
07:15a baby girl and that is la confusing le painture la painture la paint oh there's a spider in the
07:26way of
07:27where i want to paint oh c'est un problematic no c'est un problem c'est un problem oui
07:41you want to come here and get this post in this yeah yeah hopefully i've measured it right
07:47when we took the plaster off the wall downstairs we realized that the fireplace was just a floating
07:52chimney stack you see the line of the chimney breast that's just not being supported what's
07:58the worst case scenario the building falls down that's it all right now go back around there and
08:04hit that side we need to put in some support there tony's idea for that was to use some of
08:09the old oak
08:10beams that we had taken out of the ceiling in that room and clean them up and put them under
08:15the chimney
08:16breast they'll look beautiful but not only that to buy 400 year old oak beams like this would cost
08:23hundreds of dollars what's falling on my face just dust
08:32this thing's not going to fall is it i hope not the plan is to stop it from falling
08:38another couple of inches
08:43whoa it just shifted come back come back
08:46i definitely saw the chimney stacks shift it's okay what's happened because these props was carrying
08:59all the weight that's sitting at an angle now we're forcing this under we're pitching it back up so
09:04we're picking the weight back up on the front i didn't know anything was supposed to move
09:08you'd have warned you this is the last of any of the structural work it's literally then just
09:14tidying everything up then it's making everything pretty yeah it's brilliant you're doing this for
09:20your granny though yeah i mean the rest of the domain is all about like making enough money to be
09:24able to continue supporting the domain but what's the point of doing any of it if you're not with your
09:29family and friends that's nice it's in poland
09:36there must be other structures in the garden there's a reason they built a bridge you know
09:42they wouldn't have just put a bridge in the middle of the forest for no reason
09:46daphne and i stumbled upon a bridge in the forest that we had never seen before and that got us
09:52wondering what else is out here daphne thinks we do have some old maps that her grandfather collected
09:57over the years so we're gonna see if we can find those and maybe find a few more clues as
10:02to what's
10:03going on out there here we go oh this is a chateau before they put in the bell tower so
10:14this photo
10:14must have been taken before 1898 and look at that cool little side tower they had geometric plan of
10:23garden project the mr ark deacon he was one of the owners of the chateau he bought it in 1822
10:32so this map must be like 200 years old it's the bridge we found probably right here look how clear
10:38it was yeah i mean where's all the forest if you want to explore a little more around the bridge
10:43then
10:43why don't we just take this with us the chateau is about 130 acres in total i've been here for
10:50almost
10:50four years now and i still have only seen about three quarters of the whole domain
10:55this is our google maps technology for maps has gotten better
11:04oh my gosh ian there's a baby boar back up the mom might be around here somewhere
11:13we gotta go we gotta go go go go go go go you don't want to get between a boar
11:17and its baby
11:22ian what's down there we have a staircase that's a staircase yeah these are really old steps do you
11:31think there's like a dock at some point maybe but look how many stones there are on this edge
11:38i feel like there was like some sort of big piece of construction here it could have been like an
11:45amphitheater amphitheater amphitheater amphitheater amphitheater do you want me to push you in
11:54there's stuff going on here we need to find out more i think we've got maybe half an hour of
11:58daylight
11:58left also there are lots of boar prints here look at this ian ian there's another bridge what yeah
12:10there used to be something really ornate back in the forest i don't know if we'll ever be able to
12:15bring
12:15it back to something close to what it used to be feels like nature's kind of reclaimed that space
12:20but i would like to at least start by clearing a little bit of the paths so we can walk
12:25out there
12:25more often can you imagine when they first built this it would have been amazing all right let's go
12:30home before it gets too dark yeah what was that you heard that too right yeah that sounded like a
12:40mama boar all right ian we need to hurry up because it's actually getting dark now
13:01so i've only ever screeded a very small bathroom okay well this is quite an area mate this is all
13:07over
13:07place this floor it's really wavy because it is self leveling needs to be quite runny
13:21and that'll give us a nice level surface to work to so the tiles go down so much nicer
13:31it starts to dry very quick so speeds of the essence we've got to try and get this
13:37mixed up down troweled in and rolled it in as quick as we can because we don't want it to
13:42start
13:43setting in places we really need to use this spike roller it stops all the air bubbles raising to the
13:52surface when it can crack ah this eliminates that
14:01this bag is different that's the tiler don't you um we really need it mate this is going to go
14:09off
14:09okay how fast is it going to dry it's going to dry quick
14:22how are you getting on mate we really need that bad here this is setting
14:28if we don't get it here quick we're going to lose the floor
14:35okay well done mate i'm a little gassed we really need to get this knocked up quick
14:45i didn't have to use any water for that last batch i just sweat straight into the bucket
14:52that looks a lot more level that's a lot better ain't it
14:59hey come here come here come here is this you
15:05hey look at me look at me you do do that stay out of here
15:16granny won't be living in the gatehouse alone her cat charlie is moving in too
15:21and if charlie's happy then granny's happy and if granny's happy then i'm happy
15:27we have an old cat tree that has good bones but the cushions were all bad we have so many
15:37materials
15:38just sitting around since i was a little girl my grandma would often be working on fixing something
15:46up if it was an old leather chair rebinding a book sewing up pillows
15:55and i feel like if she hadn't instilled that value in me i might not have worked with the chateau
16:03in the same way i guess we could just use a hot glue gun around it
16:11i might add a few staples perfect happy
16:26so now the screening's done we need to start the tiles so i thought it might be best if we
16:31start
16:32the center of the doors as you open the doors the tiles run center from that side looks good
16:38i think that's the only way to play it pull your in tight all right okay oh boy
16:50it has become increasingly harder for me to bend over in my current state so i'm just gonna go back
16:57to when i was a kid helping my dad out and help tony out just pass some tiles and keep
17:03him company
17:10we've gone for a straightforward pattern where each tile just butts up to the neck so they're not offset
17:15like you would with brick work which makes it quicker and easier to lay it and it's what was
17:19there originally as well
17:36when you're driving and someone comes up behind you and flashes their high beams a bunch in america it's
17:42like i'm gonna die that's like a french bonjour daphne tony and i are all gonna drive up to his
17:49place
17:49in normandy because apparently he has a beautiful chandelier that he thinks will be perfect for the
17:55gatehouse i mean why are you moving literally because we need to downsize it's just too much and
18:02the boys have both grown up and left we've got a great big farmhouse just the two of us rattling
18:06about
18:06it the process of selling our property is going to take a few months because we've just got so much
18:13stuff to move are you guys thinking of staying in france we ain't sure what we're doing i think
18:19sharon would like to go back to england but i'm not so keen and i've always wanted to buy a
18:24plot of
18:25land and build my own house it's time for a new project
18:41you're all right
18:49everyone got everything got the art sauce the most important thing this looks amazing thank
18:56you fantastic bon appétit bon appétit this house reminds me so much of my dad's house
19:03y'all ready it feels like home it really does it's gonna be a bit of wrench i think
19:08moving away well there's long memories here so it's gonna be hard but i really feel like it's
19:13time yeah the boys have grown up yeah yeah it's gonna be hard when i first come and visited you
19:30there i just thought what on earth was i thinking taking this on but your enthusiasm's incredible
19:37you two taking on that shower was the best thing that could have ever happened to that that building
19:41it's uh incredible we have so many projects still yeah and there's a little bit to do at your place
19:48yeah that's some spicy sauce i'm just kicked in a bit my soul is trying to leave my nostrils
19:57i do like me shelly this is probably what i'll miss the most when we move this is a swimming
20:15pond
20:15this in the winter i'll swim in he's cracked the ice and going before really yeah and you have a
20:22lake
20:22that's where i'm doing my fishing so we'd back up before i get too emotional yeah
20:28should we go check out the chandelier yeah yeah
20:34oh my goodness there she is what do you think wow that would be amazing for the gatehouse
20:40i think granny will love it i mean this is actually really similar to granny's gatehouse
20:45because we have the a-frame here and the mezzanine up there a lot of these walls are stone and
20:51you
20:51have a lot of beautiful oak timbers i really love the combination of the rendering here and the
20:56pointing on the back wall how much does that weigh it's quite heavy it's going to take a bit of
21:01getting
21:01down
21:09if it falls it's taking me nice and slow you guys we got a chandelier up through a window into
21:18the
21:18bathing chamber so this is a piece of cake all right go ahead and start pulling
21:31one inch guys that's all it is
21:35yes i did swing on it once we got it up to make sure it was strong
21:38what yeah he jumped off the mezzanine and jumped onto the chandelier
21:43no way don't give ian any ideas please
22:01come over here i can't move like i used to move
22:06are you saying it's like you're pregnant or something
22:09there's a whole being inside of my body there we go
22:14you know what else we need to think about ian is when baby comes we're not going to be able
22:21to
22:22rent out the bridal suite in our house anymore oh nobody wants to wake up on their wedding night
22:28to a crying baby at 3 a.m i mean that's a good point so we need to figure out
22:33a different bridal suite
22:34yeah maybe start brainstorming and we do have a lot of buildings essentially any of the outbuildings
22:41could be fair game there are a lot of options
22:52i got another wallpaper from grandma brown well granny sure loves the ocean
22:56she does it was granny's choice
23:00i think your grandma misses being in the south of france
23:02yeah yeah yeah they built a house together my grandma and my grandpa
23:07they literally just went and spent like two or three months every summer on the french
23:12so granny's just trying to bring the french riviera into her bedroom
23:16exactly i like it
23:20all right tell me when we're at the horizon line
23:23down down down down down down down down down down down down down perfect
23:30i think granny chose really well very calming yeah
23:38the sooner we get that up we won't have to be on any ladders anymore so let's do it okay
23:46you got it
23:49hang on hang on it just gets in the floor
23:54there we go good yeah is it too steep for granny she's an off the shelf staircase so they are
24:01quite
24:01steep does it look too steep for her that looks pretty steep we're gonna have to get a stair lift
24:07make it a lot safer for her won't it yeah those things have like a speed setting on them you
24:11think
24:12in case she's in a hurry
24:17yeah i'll go start looking into that
24:34so why are we dressed up you'll see you'll see
24:52oh man this is amazing you brought all this down here yeah oh man
25:09okay this is awesome i mean uh c'est incroyable
25:18it's for me
25:20it's not alcohol ah d'accord it's for us
25:23so it's for us
25:23it's for us
25:26so what do we have here we have
25:28we have the tomatoes
25:29yes
25:30the fromage
25:31and
25:34the
25:35the
25:35the
25:37strawberry
25:40fraise
25:40we
26:03from my understanding 50 of the french language is baguette
26:09baguette does have like 12 meanings
26:12exactly a wand is a baguette magic
26:15a board like a two by four is a baguette
26:19yeah this is a baguette
26:21yes but you can't rely on your whole french test being about baguettes
26:27i have been studying more than that word
26:30you've clearly been practicing a lot
26:33but i think that's going to be good
26:34thank you
26:35thank you
26:35thank you
26:36thank you
26:47most of granny's budget has gone into renovating the house
26:50and so we don't have a lot of budget to work with for furnishing
26:54so we're going to try and find things around the property that can work
26:57i managed to find an iron frame for a coffee table that would be perfect for the space
27:02the only thing is that we need to find something to go in it
27:07my dad was a stonemason and something i used to do with him
27:10was go to marble suppliers and ask for their off cuts
27:13and one not too far away gave me three beautiful pieces of marble
27:18so hopefully one of these pieces will work for granny's coffee table
27:21i think that one's a lot of fun
27:23i kind of was always thinking the white one
27:26okay
27:26and then we'll be able to put colorful things on the table and decorate and they will stand out more
27:42oh that sucks
27:53oh that's not gonna be okay
27:54oh no
27:55that's the risk you have when you get stuff like this
27:58yeah because usually they leave the stuff that looks most fragile
28:02is there another piece of marble you like
28:05well we can still save this
28:08can we
28:09what if we did that japanese technique of painting it gold on the crack
28:14it's sweet
28:17there's this beautiful japanese art form essentially what they do is they fill in the cracks with gold
28:24and so it accentuates the crack but it also makes it very beautiful to look at
28:31i think we're going to do that with this marble piece because one my grandmother loves japanese style
28:37she also is a buddhist and three it'll allow us to salvage this beautiful piece of marble
28:44yeah we just put resin in and then do a gold line on it and then you have like a
28:49gold line going across
28:50the table if that's something that you've got time for i i can i can do that yeah yeah
29:07i can do that
29:16shall we
29:22we're ready to go
29:23ooh
29:25take your snack out
29:26you got it
29:27yep
29:30all right
29:32uh-oh
29:34ah good job there was no one down here
29:38chains are on get the bulbs in them
29:41there we go this one's good moment of trof
29:46hey
29:47ah
29:47i'm not all of them
29:49gonna need some convincing
29:51all right oh you guys i love this it looks so good from here yeah i want it back
29:57yeah you want it back
30:04i am going to try my hand at the kintsugi method of repairing cracks
30:14we're going to take the resin
30:17add gold paint to it and i'm doing it outside to make sure that i'm in a well ventilated area
30:27this is definitely a job that cannot be rushed
30:31i'm going to try getting gold all the way along the crack and then i'm going to try to move
30:37it a
30:38little bit so that it really goes down into the stone
30:44i'm really happy with that now we can leave that to dry for a little bit
30:48and then tomorrow we can set this into the actual frame
31:02for the downstairs restroom there's this wallpaper that daphne picked out for granny that she thinks
31:07she's going to love so putting that up today and then we'll have both bathrooms just about complete
31:21hey daphne yeah
31:25guess who got their french results
31:29i passed it that is amazing that is absolutely amazing
31:35it's really big for our family because it means that he doesn't have to go back to the states
31:40and we get to continue our lives in france apparently i can speak french okay nice
31:46what's the french for i'm painting a fireplace
32:04yeah what are you teaching him to say ian yeah don't watch out for this one
32:17all right got that fancy toilet yes daphne and i got the perfect housewarming gift for granny
32:24it's a toilet from the future this is awesome it warms your butt washes your butt dries your butt you
32:33don't even need toilet paper we just need to figure out how it works so unless you're sitting
32:37on the toilet these won't work it doesn't work here i'll sit on the side of it how about this
32:45it's really going at it okay stop are you ready for this i don't know i hope so
32:53so i told granny that she would be able to move in in a couple of days
32:58i may have been a little bit ambitious can you tell me which branch is blocking the view of the
33:06chateau that one this one yep how's the view gorgeous
33:22what's the paint all right right here yes that's wonderful
33:35this is a cozy couch this is a cozy house let's move granny in all right
33:46my job for today is to pick granny up from paris she's got her suitcase charlie the cat and they're
33:53ready to move in yeah i'm put it today
34:02the vibe is a little tense after the last time she's seen the interior she hasn't been pleased so
34:09let's keep our fingers crossed i hope she likes it oh
34:20i'll grab the cat hello charlie it would mean the world to me if granny loves the gate house
34:26because my grandmother has done so much for me in my life that it's the little way that i feel
34:32that i
35:02can give back to her
35:02it's not sure that i'm very difficult it's not sure because i'm very difficult yes
35:07you are ready to go
35:09yes
35:09you are ready to go
35:12tada
35:12oh
35:13oh
35:15oh
35:16oh
35:28it's all open super
35:34definitely got the best reaction i could have hoped for i was very nervous that she was actually going to
35:40be
35:40upset about this but she saw the space and she loved it
36:03merci
36:03merci merci merci

41:23gonna last another 500 years.
41:25This is a big job.
41:27We can't do this ourselves.
41:28And we have to do the terrace on the other side
41:30because if this is leaking now,
41:32then that one's not far behind.
41:34We can't just do this one?
41:35Ian, we have the fuel tanks under the other terrace.
41:44The second terrace is over the fuel tanks.
41:46It looks a little damp.
41:48If that one falls through,
41:50then we're in really big trouble.
41:53Chateau-Goboam.
42:01Oui?
42:06Oui, bien sûr.

42:23Next time on Castled Impossible.
42:26We're going to have to fix the terrace.
42:27We need to figure out how we're going to be able to pay for it.
42:30What do you want to do with this?
42:31The tea room.
42:34We do actually really need your advice.
42:37The fan started to move.
42:39What do you mean it started to move?
42:40It's working.
42:42When we come home from the hospital with the baby,
42:44that might be the moment where it just all comes together.
42:48Oh, my God.
42:49I'm so sorry.
42:50You make me cry.
42:53Wow.
42:55Incroyable.
42:56Did you ask how much the truck weighs?
42:59Oh, my God.
