00:00Where is tourism causing the steepest rise in local rents?
00:09Europe is the world's biggest tourism region, attracting more than half of all international tourist arrivals.
00:15The surge in visitors is also increasing pressure on communities and the environment, as well as affecting the cost of
00:21living.
00:22Protests against overtourism are widespread across Europe, from the Canary Islands to the Netherlands and the Aegean.
00:29Greek residents appear to be among the hardest hit.
00:32Tourism flows have increased annual rents in Greece by 342 euros a year since 2019, according to a report by
00:41the New Economics Foundation.
00:43The study combines rent growth data from Eurostat with air passenger volumes and current rent prices.
00:49Spain ranks second with an estimated increase of 236 euros, followed by Portugal at 220 euros and Italy at 202
00:59euros.
01:00Compared to Greece, researchers say Spain's wide-reaching rent control policies partially blunted rent inflation, while Italy's large housing supply
01:10eased the pressure.
01:11At the same time, Ireland emerges as the country with the largest rent increase in absolute terms over the next
01:17five years, with an additional 251 euros per year.
01:22And the study claims that the current plans to expand Dublin Airport are likely to make Ireland's strained market even
