As the United States celebrates its 250th Independence Day on July 4, 2026, one question echoes across the nation: Does the American Dream still exist?

From lifelong citizens to newly arrived immigrants, people across America share their hopes, struggles, and beliefs about opportunity, freedom, success, and the future. While some still see the U.S. as the land of opportunity, others say rising costs, inequality, and economic challenges have made the dream harder to achieve.

Watch this special report exploring what the American Dream means in 2026 as the nation marks 250 years of independence.

00:00The American dream, the American dream, the American dream, the American dream, the American dream doesn't exist for African-Americans.
00:07I am absolutely living the American dream. I'm sick of it. I'm sick of the way this this country treats
00:13people. Everything that we decide to do good in life, that's the American dream.
00:26The American dream doesn't exist for African-Americans in this country. I think I am living my American dream. Me
00:34and my husband, we've been married a long time. We earn pretty good money. I don't want for food. I
00:41don't want for shelter. We're doing very well, so I think I am living the American dream.
00:46What is the American dream? To do right for your family, earn good money, mind your business, and prosper.
00:59Earlier on, it was probably about having freedom in the sense of like home ownership and freedom of religion.
01:04And I think it had more to do with having a house in the suburbs and like some of the
01:08materialistic things.
01:09But I think now it's evolved into just kind of living the way that you want.
01:15As an American, it's easy to forget those sacrifices and where we come from.
01:21But as an Iranian, seeing how my people are suffering in Iran, I can look at my life here and
01:27say, I am absolutely living the American dream.
01:30I have safety. I have freedom of speech. I have freedom of religion. I can wear whatever I want as
01:36a woman.
01:36There are many flaws here, but we have something very special that's worthy of protecting.
01:44The American dream is what we have today. You know, homes. We have drinking water. We have jobs.
01:53We have all good things that we take care of. And everything that we decide to do good in life,
01:59that's what our dream is.
02:01Because that's the American dream is to do great. And hardship and whatever's going on now, you know, it's something
02:08that we can change and we have to change it, but we cannot change it as one people. We all
02:13have to change it.
02:15For me, the American dream, there is a whole aspect of business. I'm passionate about technology. Since I was little,
02:21I have my calculations to program games or small programs.
02:25And so, the dream of the American tech entrepreneur is deeply rooted in me.
02:34The American dream for me is doing what I'm doing, but there's too many damn regulations, too many stipulations.
02:41There's too many people. They hate on each other, steal from each other. They don't love each other anyway at
02:46all.
02:47And, you know, I'm sick of it. I'm sick of the way this country treats people. I'm sick of the
02:52way this country treats its foreign neighbors.
02:54I'm sick of the ice. I'm sick of a lot of damn things.
03:37Yes, I am living American dreams. When I was a kid, I wanted to be like Charlie Chaplin, come to
03:42Hollywood and be on TV, and I achieved that.
