Mexican mayor says 'I do' to caiman as part of harvest ritual
A small town Mexican mayor married his caiman bride on Wednesday (June 30) in a colorful ceremony to bring abundance to the community. In San Pedro Huamelula, locals turned out to dance and dress up the caiman named Ana Cintia Ramirez Ahumada. The ritual marriage likely dates back centuries to pre-Hispanic times among Oaxaca state's Chontal and Huave indigenous communities. The caiman is believed to be a deity representing mother earth, and her marriage to the local leader symbolizes the joining of humans with the divine. Celebrations broke out when the caiman married local mayor Daniel Gutierrez, believing the union brings prosperity and a good harvest to the area.
