Following his defeat in Colorado’s Democratic gubernatorial primary, Michael Bennet delivered an emotional speech reflecting on nearly 20 years of public service and thanking supporters for their dedication throughout the campaign. Attorney General Phil Weiser secured the Democratic nomination after a closely watched race, framing his victory as a grassroots triumph powered by volunteers and local supporters. Bennet’s remarks focused on gratitude, public service, and optimism for Colorado’s future as he acknowledged the outcome. The primary marks a significant political transition, with Weiser now advancing to the general election in the race to become Colorado’s next governor.

00:00And thank you Colorado. Thank you Colorado. We love you. We love you. We love you.
00:11Thank you. I love you and I love all of Colorado. We couldn't fit in this room,
00:17but we got almost all of Colorado into this room. I called Phil a short time ago and I
00:26congratulated him on his victory and committed to remain a partner in the
00:31work ahead for our great state. Please give him a round of applause for the
00:37extraordinary race that he ran. You know that tonight are not the results that we
00:47wanted. Roger Lowe, thank you for everything. I'm not gonna be able to do
00:54that for everybody here, but Roger Lowe, thank you for everything. Thank you.
01:00Tonight the results are not what we wanted. We came up short and while that is
01:06disappointing and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't, I do not regret for a second the
01:12campaign that we, we ran or the cause that we fought for.
01:24Some, sometimes the harder path is the right path, even where it doesn't lead
01:31where you had hoped. I want to thank my campaign team led by Nelly Moran.
01:43Where are you?
01:48For the incredible work and for being there with me shoulder to shoulder the entire
01:55way. To the Senate team, thank you for your extraordinary commitment.
02:00For serving the people of Colorado every single day. I think that if I have to judge
02:09it by the result, Phil might have been right that your work was too good for us
02:14to overcome. So thank you very much for doing it. Phil also mentioned that I had
02:20managed in the end to make his mom happy and my mom happy by losing this rate.
02:27And I want, I want to thank the hundreds of volunteers who gave their time, their energy
02:34and their belief to this campaign. Thank you to the supporters who knocked on doors, who
02:40made calls, who hosted events, who had fascinating conversations with friends and
02:47neighbors and never stopped believing and have never stopped believing that
02:51Colorado's future could be brighter than the present. And thank you to the voters
02:57who put your trust and belief in our campaign. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
03:15And most important, thank you to Susan and to
03:25you. Thank you. Thank you to our girls, Caroline, Helena, and Ann. Susan has been my partner
03:50in every sense of the word. And our daughters have been a constant reminder of why this work matters
03:57in the first place. Stating the obvious, I love you. Thank you. There is not a day that goes by
04:09that I didn't recognize how much of a family undertaking this work is. I know all of us,
04:17this entire family, have treasured our time together on this campaign, just as we have in every campaign
04:25that we've had here in Colorado. I want to talk to you very briefly tonight about the work ahead.
04:32But first, I want to acknowledge a devastating and clarifying demonstration of commitment to public service,
04:41a reminder to all of us in public life and as citizens of this democracy that our duty transcends
04:49politics, party, and self-interest. We lost three courageous wildland firefighters on Saturday
04:58as they fought the blaze west of Fruta. Their names are Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson, and Sydney Watson.
05:08I'd ask for a moment of silence as we honor their sacrifice. Thank you. And now it is time
05:32to come together, Colorado. We have had our disagreements. That's obvious to anybody who's been
05:39watching this race. And no doubt we will have healthy disagreements in the future. But we agree
05:48on what the problems are. We agree on what our goals must be. And we all know that the future
05:55of Colorado
05:55depends on what we build from this time forward. Across Colorado, families are working harder than ever.
06:04But the cost to keep a roof over their heads keeps rising faster than their paychecks.
06:10The cost of health care, which in any civilized country should be theirs by right, is breaking their
06:17family budgets. At the same time, our state is facing a budget crisis of its own. And a generation of
06:26young
06:26people that I met with day after day after day on this campaign and as their senator, a generation of
06:35young
06:35people wonders whether they'll ever be able to afford to live in this state that they love. All across America,
06:44a
06:44fundamental promise has been broken. The promise that if you work hard and do your part, you can build a
06:51good
06:51life. And Colorado is no exception. Even here, doing everything right isn't enough anymore. You get an
07:00education. You build a career. You contribute to your community. And still, you can't get ahead. Right now, young
07:08people and too many others across our state are asking one very simple question. Is there a place
07:16for me here in Colorado? My answer will always be yes. And we should, that should be our answer.
07:32Of course, of course, Donald Trump has made matters so much worse. He is trying to convince Americans to hate
07:43each other just to serve his own selfish purposes. Donald Trump, as I've said during the course of the campaign,
07:52is the
07:52worst president in American history. But this is not the worst moment in American history. And as others have
08:01done in even tougher times than the ones that we're facing today, some of whom are still alive and in
08:09our
08:09midst like Anna Jo Haynes, who's standing right here with Happy Haynes. As others in tougher times have done, it
08:24now falls on us to champion what we also value most, our democratic freedoms and the basic compact of
08:35American opportunity. Our cause is to make Colorado the best place in America to
08:41build a life. A place where the American dream is within reach for more people here than anywhere else in
08:49the
08:49nation. Building the Colorado we all want, all of us, won't happen because of one election. It will happen because
08:59people across the state decide that our future is worth building together. That is a fight I will
09:07continue in my service to the state of Colorado. And I ask tonight all of my supporters all over this
09:14state, and I'll say as Ken Salazar did mention on the way in how proud I am to have won
09:20so much of rural
09:21Colorado.
09:31Jonathan Hauss, thank you for everything. That's a fight I will continue to wage in my service to the
09:39state of Colorado. And tonight I ask all my supporters to do everything you can to make sure Phil is
09:46successful, not just as a candidate, but as Colorado's next governor. Thank you all for being here tonight.
09:54Thank you Colorado. We love you. We'll see you tomorrow. Thank you.
