Before England was one kingdom, there was Æthelberht of Kent — a powerful Anglo-Saxon ruler remembered as one of the earliest **Bretwaldas**, or overlords of Britain.
Ruling Kent in the late 6th and early 7th centuries, Æthelberht became one of the most influential kings of his age. His marriage to the Frankish Christian princess Bertha helped open the door for one of the most important turning points in English history: the arrival of Augustine’s mission from Rome in 597.
Æthelberht’s conversion to Christianity transformed Kent into the first major Christian kingdom among the Anglo-Saxons and helped lay the foundations for the Christianisation of England. He also issued one of the earliest written law codes in English history, showing the growing power and organisation of Anglo-Saxon kingship.
This is the story of Æthelberht — king of Kent, Bretwalda, lawgiver, and the ruler who helped bring Christianity to Anglo-Saxon England.
