PGA Tour pros are hitting it further than ever, but is rolling back the golf ball the right solution? We argue that the ever-increasing forgiveness and size of modern drivers are the real issue and share a personal experiment that proves it.

00:00I personally disagree that rolling back the ball is the right way to go about that simply because I think
00:07it will make such a small dent in what is, if people say there is a problem, is a larger
00:13problem.
00:14And as we've seen year after year, guys are getting stronger coming out on the PGA Tour.
00:20The average swing speed has been going up and up and up and up and it can go up because
00:25drivers are so incredibly forgiving.
00:27So you can just keep hitting it as hard as you like.
00:30I'm sure you must have seen that Ludwig Oberg still screen.
00:32I'm just going to bring that one up at Sawgrass.
00:35Sawgrass.
00:36We towed it by about three centimetres off centre and it was a gentle draw down the middle that pitched
00:41at 310 and that shouldn't happen.
00:43And then McGinley on Skype.
00:45Testament to Titleist, right?
00:46Yeah, and then McGinley said on commentary he meant to do that because he was trying to hit a little
00:49tight draw.
00:50Yeah, so wanted to hit it nearly off the actual logo.
00:53Game's gone.
00:54So I don't think that should happen.
00:56And I think if you keep the MOI of drivers as high as they are and the head sizes and
01:01so on and so forth,
01:02well, they'll just hit it harder and they'll make up the ground that they've lost with your little wall rollback.
01:07And it won't make a dent.
01:10That's my opinion.
01:11And having played the Golf Pride fix-up challenge we played where I played with a Tor spoon,
01:17which I think was 130cc as my driver.
01:21It was 10 and a half degrees and 130cc.
01:23When I got it right, brilliant, it got out there and it thoroughly deserved to.
01:27It deserved to.
01:28It went as far as your man we were playing with when you lay ice smoke.
01:31Yeah.
01:32But when I didn't...
01:33All hell broke loose.
01:34All hell broke loose.
01:35And it was entertaining.
01:36Yeah.
01:37Go watch it.
01:37And it starts to make you think, right, well, I can't go at this because I've got to ensure I
01:42find the middle of the face here.
01:43So inherently and subconsciously I slowed down to do that.
01:46So I was getting slower and slower as the round was going on, as my confidence was sapping away.
01:49And it put more of an emphasis on strike and quality and ability and skill level.
01:56That's what I personally believe is the way forward.
