A documentary on the making of the Broadway and West End musical stage adaptation of Back to the Future.
Transcript
00:01My wife turned to me and said,
00:02you know what would make a wonderful musical?
00:04Back to the Future.
00:08It's probably the greatest creative experience of my life.
00:11This is a movie that people are very, very passionate about.
00:15It's one of the perfect movies that I've ever made.
00:17I grew up on these movies.
00:20The magic is unreal.
00:22The DeLorean is the star of the show.
00:26It feels insane.
00:27Every night I feel like I'm on a roller coaster.
00:28We started in 2006, and in 2016, we were nowhere.
00:35Great Scott!
00:40We had no idea what we were getting into.
00:42No one had any musical theater experience.
00:45I was truly terrified that we were going to destroy Back to the Future for an entire generation.
00:50Somehow we've got to make a musical as good as the film.
00:54It can be close to a million dollars a week to run a show.
00:57So yeah, the risks are massive.
00:59It was incredibly terrifying.
01:01We did actually think about throwing in the tunnel.
01:04Would the world buy anyone other than Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly?
01:10Marty is Michael, and that's why he's so synonymous with the role.
01:14You brought it.
01:14You did it, John.
01:18You have to get your blocking exactly right every single time, because if not, you might
01:24get your head chopped off by a set piece.
01:25Everything is choreographed very specifically.
01:28All these different styles put into one musical.
01:31There are sequences in that film that felt like a real challenge.
01:35How are you going to make the DeLorean do what it needs to do?
01:45It's that electric, the hairs are rising on the back of your neck feeling that embodies
01:50what Back to the Future does for me.
01:52It's something that you can't recreate, and you're going to leave with that performance
01:55for the rest of your life.
01:56Even before it opened, we were announcing the very first tour date.
02:01Sometimes the chances seem very risky, but when they pay off, they can pay off with big
02:06dividends.
02:06It's exactly what musical theater is supposed to do.
02:09I couldn't be more proud.
02:11And the rest is history.
