01:44No warning, no countdown, just a jolt that woke up an entire city and sent 175 people
01:52rushing into the streets in the dark.
01:54On June 29, 2026, at 12.12 a.m. local time, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck near Kaohsiang
02:04County in Yibin City, one of China's most seismically charged regions.
02:09The epicenter sat just 8 kilometers from the town of Changning and only about 16 kilometers
02:16from Yibin's city center.
02:18Now, 5.5 might not sound catastrophic, but here's the thing that makes this quake dangerous and
02:25interesting.
02:25It was shallow, incredibly shallow.
02:28At only 6 to 10 kilometers deep, this earthquake had almost no distance to lose energy before
02:35hitting the surface.
02:36The deeper a quake, the more the earth absorbs the shockwaves.
02:40A shallow one like this punches up directly into homes, roads, and buildings above it.
02:46That's why 13 people were injured.
02:49That's why homes cracked.
02:51That's why tremors were felt all the way in parts of Chengdu and Chongqing, major cities
02:57hundreds of kilometers away.
02:59This didn't happen by accident.

03:06Directly beneath this region, the Indian plate is slowly, relentlessly grinding into the Eurasian
03:12plate, pushing up the Tibetan plateau and building pressure along a web of fault lines.
03:18Those faults don't always hold.
03:20When they slip, you get earthquakes like this one.
03:23It's the same geological story that produced the catastrophic 2008 Wenchang quake, a magnitude
03:307.9 disaster that killed nearly 70,000 people.
03:35June 29th was nothing like that, but it's a reminder that the same forces are still very
03:41much at work.
03:42China's emergency systems kicked in fast.
03:45Authorities activated a level 3 emergency response almost immediately.
03:50Rescue teams, damage assessments, evacuation coordination.
03:54Around 175 to 196 residents were moved to safety as a precaution.
