00:00How hot is France right now?
00:02People can fight over powerful air conditioning.
00:05Losing reason and patience
00:06Birds can die from heatstroke on the road.
00:09And bus drivers
00:10The car accident was caused by dizziness due to high temperature.
00:13Of course, under the bright sun
00:15Can be used to fry eggs and popcorn
00:17It's already a piece of cake.
00:19Nothing to be surprised about
00:21There are also many French people
00:22Apply this sealant to the windows to block the heat.
00:25This is not a disaster movie, folks.
00:27Rather, it is the dire situation that many parts of Europe are facing.
00:30You probably can't imagine
00:32Why does hot weather cause more than 1,000 people to die in a single day?
00:36And it's a small issue like whether or not to turn on the air conditioning.
00:39Why did it spark such a heated debate in France?
00:49The extreme heatwave currently sweeping France has temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
00:53The average daily death toll has exceeded 1,400 over the past few days.
00:57Paris convenience stores are almost always packed.
01:00But the most outrageous thing is
01:01A staggering 60% of hospitals in France...
01:04More than 90% of buses
01:06There isn't even a single air conditioner.
01:07The French government urgently ordered 30,000 air conditioners.
01:11It's so hot
01:13If it were a Malaysian
01:14We'd immediately run indoors to enjoy the air conditioning.
01:17But why would the French rather die of heat?
01:19No more air conditioners will be installed in homes and shops.
01:22In fact, compared to the United States and Japan, where air conditioning penetration rates exceed 90%.
01:27Only about a quarter of French households have air conditioners.
01:31This resistance to air conditioning mainly stems from traditional cultural beliefs.
01:35Considerations such as restrictions on historical buildings
01:38That first
01:39French society has always been reluctant to accept the installation of air conditioning.
01:42Some people describe it this way
01:43The locals have a sense of cultural pride
01:46I feel that not turning on the air conditioner brings me closer to nature.
01:49An elegant and eco-friendly lifestyle
01:51They felt that the huge temperature difference caused by air conditioning
01:55It can easily cause discomfort such as headaches and colds.
01:58Therefore, I tend to tolerate things as much as possible.
02:00second
02:01French summers are typically dry and cool.
02:03The high temperature lasts for a short time
02:05In addition to many old buildings
02:07Subject to strict regulations
02:09The exterior walls cannot be damaged at will.
02:11If you want to install an outdoor air conditioner
02:14Residents need to apply
02:15It also requires the consent of the owners' committee.
02:17Difficult to obtain approval
02:18The cost is not cheap.
02:20However, the extreme and deadly heat of today
02:22The long-debated French issue of air conditioning
02:25It was brought directly to the political battlefield.
02:27That is, Zheng Ning began to publicly urge...
02:29The government subsidizes the installation of air conditioning for all citizens.
02:32They even mocked environmentalists in Congress.
02:35They're a bunch of idiots who only know how to blow electric fans.
02:38The two factions in the parliament hall
02:40Regarding the issue of air conditioning use
02:42They were fighting fiercely.
02:43Political divisions stemmed from air conditioning issues.
02:46For people in tropical countries like ours
02:49It's completely unimaginable.
02:50You support Europeans' efforts to combat high temperatures.
02:53Install air conditioning
02:54Will you change your long-standing lifestyle and cultural identity?
