00:01As Greece prepares for yet another intense wildfire season, a new defense system is emerging from space.
00:07A dedicated constellation of satellites, each roughly the size of a toaster oven, will monitor the country for the earliest
00:13signs of wildfires.
00:15In May, 4 small satellites, each smaller than a standard carry-on suitcase, were launched into low earth orbit.
00:22This pioneering initiative has the potential to save lives, safeguard communities and strengthen Europe's ambition for greater technological autonomy.
00:30We scan an area, we use these photos, we send them to our AEI models, they analyze them down to
00:39a 4x4 meters analysis.
00:42Then, based on that and based on the information the AEI models have, they can detect if it's a fire
00:48or not.
00:48And then, we take that information and we send it to the fire service or any other service that's connected
00:54with the system.
00:54Greece became the first country in the world to incorporate a dedicated satellite constellation into its national wildfire response system.
01:01A pyrrhizal in an asterisk area is easy to see from a visitor, and the rain will see.
01:06A pyrrhizal in an international area, or in a crowded area, can be found much faster than a such a
01:13fire.
01:13A fire which, with thermal cameras, can be found with these thermal spots.
01:17The satellites are equipped with thermal sensors capable of identifying newly ignited fires as small as 4 meters across.
01:24Significantly outperforming conventional satellites which typically detect only much larger fires.
01:29Artificial intelligence algorithms have been developed to filter out these false positives before any alerts are forwarded to emergency services.
01:37With the four nanosatellites that AuroraTech has launched in May, we will have every hour this kind of information.
01:45There will be no gap, but it's important not only for the early detection, but also for the fire spread
01:51model.
01:52So we will know what the fire is doing every one hour.
01:55The satellite network funded by the European Union represents an investment of 200 million euros.
