00:01Hello and welcome to Simply the Best, the show where we debate the pop culture subjects we're
00:06most passionate about and you choose the winner. I'm your moderator, Rebecca Brayton. Today's topic,
00:12World Cup versus the Olympics. Which tournament is the most important? Our debaters, Jesse on
00:17Team World Cup and Tori on Team Olympics. Each debater will have 30 seconds to make their case
00:22followed by a 10 second rebuttal. Once that's done, we leave the decision to you. We flipped a
00:28coin with which Jesse won and he has chosen to speak last. So now I welcome our debaters into
00:34the arena. Tori, your 30 seconds starts now. All right, here's the thing. The Olympics are for
00:40everyone, including me with my limited sports knowledge and attention span. If you don't like
00:45one of the events going on, fine. There's three more happening at the exact same time. Change the
00:49channel. Click. The other thing is the Olympics. Guess what they have? Soccer, the World Cup. Guess
00:54what it doesn't have? Curling, synchronized swimming, breakdancing. Tentatively, the list
00:58goes on. You know who else thought the Olympics were the greatest competition of all time?
01:02Zeus. Who am I? Prometheus. I'm going to fly too close to the sun and deny Zeus. I don't think
01:08so.
01:08I rest my case. Thank you. All right. Now, Jesse, who's making a case for Team World Cup?
01:14Jesse, your 30 seconds starts now. Well, look, Tori, the problem with the Olympics is the overwhelming
01:21number of sports, disciplines, and athletes. The casual viewer is hung up on questions like,
01:26why is that skier suddenly shooting a rifle? Or what even is upon the horse? There might be too
01:30many sports, and I don't think anyone's dying to watch speed walking or six hours of curling or horse
01:36prancing. The beauty of the World Cup is its simplicity. Which team can put the ball in the
01:40net more times than the other team? You've got 90 minutes to decide which country is superior in every
01:45way. In the Olympic soccer, there's no Lionel Messi. There's no Kylian Mbappe. There's no household names.
01:50And I'm really happy for that local javelin thrower guy that made it to the Olympics,
01:54but it's just not the same. All right, Tori, did Jesse say anything that you'd like to refute in
01:59your 10 seconds? Starting now. Absolutely. Jesse, to you, I say, why isn't that Olympic skier shooting
02:05a rifle? That's what I'm tuning in for. That's what I want to see on my Olympic stage. That's all
02:11I've
02:11got to say. All right, Jesse, you get the last word. 10 seconds. Starting now. Look, curling is just not
02:18that interesting. I'm not going to lie about it. The simplicity of soccer reigns supreme.
02:23I know I'm supposed to say neutral, but... God! Anyway, obviously I've made up my mind,
02:29but who do you think made the better case? Let us know in the comments which side of the debate
02:33you land on. And while you're at it, let us know if there are any other topics that you'd like
02:37to see
02:37as argue about later. See ya.
