00:15APPLAUSE
00:26Good afternoon and welcome to Countdown.
00:29It's Father's Day on Sunday.
00:31Chance to say thank you to all the great dads out there.
00:34I have to say, I think it's a total con.
00:38You don't need a day to reward dads
00:40because being a dad is the best thing in the world anyway
00:43from the moment, the first moment that your kids are born.
00:46I mean, who else would you happily let vomit and pee on you?
00:50No one.
00:52Yes, kids can break your heart with a single tear
00:55and they can fill you with so much pride
00:56that you could absolutely burst.
00:58I mean, my kids are Robbie, Matt and Olivia
01:01and they make me so proud, so happy and so poor.
01:05LAUGHTER
01:07And the other great thing about being a dad
01:10is that, to my kids, I'm a giant.
01:12Well, actually, not to Robbie and Matt anymore.
01:16They're 12 and 11 and they're as tall as I am now.
01:19But to Olivia, I'm a giant.
01:21Though when she's eight, that might not be the case.
01:24LAUGHTER
01:25Hi, Rachel.
01:26Hi, Geoff.
01:27You're a daddy's girl.
01:28I bet you could twist your dad round your little finger.
01:30Um, I'm a daddy's girl when it comes to daddy using your season ticket this week.
01:34Oh.
01:35LAUGHTER
01:36We bond over the football.
01:37Just like me and you, you know, my other dad.
01:39Yes.
01:40Oh, right.
01:41I thought you were going to say granddad for a minute.
01:43It could have been worse.
01:45Let's meet our contestants, shall we?
01:46Two new contestants this week.
01:48First of all, Matt Croy, who's from Oldham.
01:50He's a police officer with Greater Manchester Police.
01:53Matt's hobbies include going to the gym and music
01:56and he particularly enjoys creating mash-ups.
01:59Well, very similar to me because I like fry-ups
02:01and it's the same sort of thing, is it?
02:02LAUGHTER
02:02Not quite, Geoff.
02:03So what's the mash-up then, Matt?
02:05Basically, it's when you take the music from one song
02:08and the loops from another, fuse it together to make a new song.
02:11Right.
02:11So it's become a bit of an obsession of mine.
02:12I've done quite a few now.
02:14Nothing to do with food.
02:15That's a bit disappointing.
02:16OK.
02:17Matt's a bit of a football fan as well.
02:19He's a Grimsby Town supporter.
02:20Yeah, I grew up in Grimsby, so I was seasoned to get older there.
02:23OK.
02:24Matt Croy is one of our two Countdown debutants today.
02:27Up against him is Barry Crawford,
02:28who is a retired modern languages teacher from East Kilbride.
02:32He's been a member of the local Gilbert and Sullivan Society
02:34for the past 35 years.
02:36You got a favourite work?
02:39Oh, the one you're doing at the time is always very, you know,
02:42the one you really enjoy doing.
02:43The Mercado is one of my favourites.
02:45I've played the part five times.
02:47Brilliant.
02:48It's great sing-along stuff as well, isn't it?
02:50Fantastic, yeah.
02:52Now, Barry's a qualified football ref.
02:54When he was teaching, you taught Ali McCoy.
02:58That's correct, yes.
02:59I taught him.
03:00I used to referee him as a schoolboy.
03:02Yeah.
03:03Yeah.
03:04When you were teaching, what was he like?
03:05Was he an imp who sat at the back of class?
03:07He always said I weren't.
03:09Yeah.
03:10Very popular for the girls too.
03:12Was he?
03:13OK.
03:14Barry Crawford against Matt Croy.
03:20And joining Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner,
03:22he's the Daddy of Impressions, it's John Culshaw.
03:25APPLAUSE
03:29Susie, I did promise that you could ask today, you know,
03:32John to do one impression of one of your favourite people.
03:36Well, John mentioned that he once met the very much-missed Richard Whiteley,
03:39so I was wondering if you could do Richard for us.
03:41Oh, yes. Yes, indeed.
03:43This was at a comic relief party that Richard and I bumped into each other,
03:47and we'd been doing quite a lot of Richard and Countdown sketches on Dead Ringers at the time.
03:52And he said,
03:52So, hello.
03:54Yes.
03:56So.
03:56Done the studio up a bit.
03:58Very nice too.
03:59Very nice too.
04:00So, Countdown starts now.
04:04And he said,
04:05He said,
04:06So,
04:06I thought I had,
04:08you know,
04:08I thought I was nondescript.
04:09What do I do?
04:10What do I say?
04:11And I say,
04:12Well, you say, Countdown.
04:13And he went,
04:14Countdown.
04:14And I said,
04:15Countdown.
04:16And he said,
04:17Countdown.
04:17And then we both together said,
04:19Countdown.
04:20If everyone gave a little round of applause,
04:22you'd gathered round us.
04:23So that was,
04:24it was a lovely meeting.
04:25Lovely.
04:25Great story.
04:26And let's press on with the action, shall we?
04:28Matt has won the toss,
04:29and so he gets first pick of the letters.
04:31Off you go, Matt.
04:31Hi, Rachel.
04:32Hi, Matt.
04:33Can I start with a consonant, please?
04:34You can, thank you.

05:47Ship.
05:48OK.
05:50A couple of fives from what was a pretty awkward collection to open up with.
05:55What else have we found over there, John and Susie?
05:57Yes, we discovered a seven, which is upstage.
06:01Upstage there for seven.
06:03Very good.
06:04Yes, upstage there for seven, but Matt and Barry, a few nerves settled straight away
06:08because they're both on the scoreboard after opening round with five points apiece.
06:12Barry, it's you to choose.
06:13Hi, Rachel.
06:14So, could I have a consonant, please?
06:15Of course.

07:11I'm sorry.
07:13I'm sorry.
07:14I'm sorry.
07:16I'm sorry.
07:17I'm sorry.
07:17I'm sorry.
07:19Matt? Six. Six. And Barry? I've only got a five. Okay, what's the five, Barry? Crawl. And the six, Matt?
07:26Racial. Racial. Very nice. Yeah, well spotted. Yeah, very well spotted, because there's not much in there, really, is there?
07:34John, Susie? No, there's Alarm, there's Mola, and rather a nice one for six, which Susie discovered in the last
07:42second and a half, and it's Lorica.
07:45Lorica. Yes, Lorica. It's a historical term for a Roman corslet, or cuirass of leather, but it's also a zoological
07:52term for the rigid case or shell of some animals. Okay, Matt, it's you to pick. Colson, please, Rachel. Thank
08:00you, Matt. N. And again. T. And again, please. S. Vowel. I. Another. U. Another, please.
08:17O. Consonant. F. Vowel. E. And a consonant, please. And a final, D. And time starts now.
08:30T. N. And a consonant, please.
09:02Barry, what have you got this time? Seven. Seven. And Matt? Five. Okay, what's the five, Matt? Tones. And the
09:09seven, Barry? Infused. Infused. Very nice. Yes, an excellent word, isn't it? Yeah. Seven. Brilliant.
09:17I mean, I managed a couple of sixes, that's all. Were there any other sevens, John, Susie? Yes, there was.
09:21We found four. Fondues, fondest, outside, and tedious were there as well.
09:29Okay, lots of sevens available then. Infused is excellent for Barry, and he just nudges in front. Now, Matt's got
09:3611, and Barry has 12. Barry, it's your selection.
09:40Consonant, please, Rachel. Thank you, Barry. R. And another one. Q. Vowel, please. E. And another one. A. Consonant. M.
09:58Another consonant.
09:59V. A vowel. O. Another vowel. E. And a final consonant, please. And a final N.
10:11And time starts now.
10:14V. A vowel.
10:45Matt. Six. And Barry? Six. Okay. What's yours, Barry? Remove. And yours, Matt? Mona. Remove and Mona. Yes. Good sixes.
10:56What have we got our eye on over there? Well, there was a nice little five that I spotted. Roman.
11:01Royal servant to the true emperor, Jeff Sterling. But for seven, there's overman. Overman. Overman a company would be to
11:11provide it with more staff than necessary. Okay.
11:14Time to test their maths now. It's our first numbers round coming up. And Matt, here's you to pick them.
11:19Can I have two from the top, please?
11:21You can. Thank you, Matt. Two large ones and four small ones for the first numbers game today.
11:26And for this round, the numbers are one, four, nine, and ten. And the two large ones, 75 and 50.
11:35And the target to reach 609.
11:3830 seconds, then, to reach 609.
11:421,000?
11:43We'll see you tomorrow.
11:43200.
11:5500,000,000.
11:55We'll see you tomorrow.
11:56Go, PRE-10,000.
11:565,900 are.
11:56서브 this.
11:56And we'll see you tomorrow.
12:094,400.
12:105,900.
12:1011,900.
12:12Looking for 609. Barry how close? 610. And Matt? 610. Okay. Matt, let's have yours then first.
12:209 take 1 is 8. 9 minus 1 is 8. Times 75. Times 75, 600. Plus 10. Plus the 10,
12:261 away, 610.
12:28Barry, same method? Exactly the same.
12:34Okay, so 610, nice and straightforward then. Rachel, what about 609?
12:37Yeah, harder than it looked. If you say 75 times 10 is 750. 4 minus 1 is 3. Times the
12:4650 is 150. Take that away for 600 and add the 9609.
12:58Two countdown debutants, but producing a very good contest at the moment. Matt's on 24 and Barry on 25.
13:04Time for them to sit back for a couple of minutes now.
13:07John Culshaw has been our guest on Countdown all this week and I have to be honest, I've lost count
13:11of the number of impressions that we've had from John during the course of the week.
13:13They've all been absolutely fantastic.
13:16Can you remember your first impression?
13:19The first sort of proper vocal one would have been Patrick Moore.
13:23I remember watching an episode of the Sky at Night and there was this presenter speaking very quickly indeed all
13:29about wonderful star systems like Betelgeuse and the constellation of Orion.
13:33And he was fascinating.
13:35Back in February, I joined him and the rest of the Sky at Night team on the 700th edition of
13:40the programme.
13:41And we were preparing to record part of the show in Patrick Moore's study in his home.
13:47And there on his wall is the certificate of his knighthood.
13:52And beneath it there was sort of like a crested cross, rather like a medal.
13:57And he saw me looking at it and he says, do you know what that cross there is for?
14:01And so I said, well, is this something that you were honoured with through your time in the RAF?
14:06Is this something like something along the lines of a Victoria Cross or some sort of military honour?
14:11And he says, no, it came out of a Christmas cracker.
14:17Brilliant.
14:18I mean, that's one of your earliest ones.
14:19What about your most recent ones? Because I suppose it's a constant battle to keep updating.
14:23Yes, you've always got to keep looking for the new characters.
14:25A favourite of recent times, I think...
14:29I would say probably Fabio Capello because they...
14:34I like the...
14:36It seems as though he learnt a few more words of English every post-match interview.
14:41I think he sort of reminds me of Tommy Cooper a little bit.
14:45I think somebody took his language tape away and replaced it with a DVD of Tommy Cooper.
14:49Because you just expect him someday to say, well, I...
14:52He won a good game.
14:54Rooney, Gerrard, Gerrard, Rooney, Rooney, Gerrard.
14:57Ha, ha, ha, ha.
14:59The borderline.
15:01Brilliant.
15:02John, thank you very much indeed once again.
15:05Matt has 24 then, Barry has 25.
15:07Here's your first teaser today.
15:09The words are trod code.
15:12Trod code.
15:13And the clue falsified his documents to get through medical school.
15:16Falsified his documents to get through medical school.
15:36Doctored.
15:37Here's the answer to our first teaser of the day.
15:40Good contest between two newcomers to count down.
15:43Matt Croy has got 24 at the moment.
15:45Barry Crawford, with a very narrow lead, he's on 25.
15:49Barry, it's you to pick.
15:50Thanks, Geoff.
15:52Consonant, please, Rachel.
15:53Thank you, Barry.

16:19A.
16:20And a final vowel.
16:22And a final I.
16:24And your 30 seconds starts now.
16:58Matt, what have you got?
16:59Seven, I think.
17:00And Barry?
17:01I have a seven as well.
17:03Okay.
17:03Barry, what's yours?
17:04Imputed.
17:06And Matt?
17:06Same.
17:09Excellent.
17:10Very good word, yeah.
17:10Very good.
17:12Imputed for seven.
17:13So, what else have we got in dictionary corner?
17:15Well, now then, what's this word we were looking at here?
17:17Is it there?
17:18Yeah, it's in.
17:19It's in.
17:20It's a lovely obscenical word.
17:21It's nice because it uses the Z.
17:23It's deutia.
17:26Deutia.
17:26A.
17:27An ornamental shrub with white or pinkish flowers.
17:30Matt moves on to 31 and Barry to 32.
17:34Matt, your pick.
17:35Consonant, please, Rachel.
17:36Thank you, Matt.
17:38N.
17:38Another one, please.
17:40L.
17:41A vowel.

17:48A consonant.
17:50S.
17:51Another one.

17:59A consonant.
18:02D.
18:04And a vowel, please.
18:05And the last one.
18:07A.
18:08And here's the countdown clock.
18:10Good morning.
18:25This one.
18:25pattern clock.
18:25I.
18:26The tune.
18:41Barry, what have you made of that?
18:42Seven.
18:43And Matt?
18:44Eight.
18:45OK, what's the seven, Barry?
18:46Slender.
18:47And the eight, Matt?
18:49Realised.
18:50Realised.
18:51Excellent.
18:52Very good.
18:57Yes, it's an excellent eight, isn't it?
18:59You wouldn't think these two were newcomers, would you?
19:01No nerves at all.
19:03Doing very, very well.
19:04What have we got in Dictionary Corner, guys?
19:06More eights.
19:07Red lines, islander.
19:09And a word that relates to the distant stars,
19:13as we were saying with the aforementioned Patrick Moore,
19:16sidereal, for eight.
19:19Thank you very much indeed.

20:32Borgate.
20:33And the seven, Matt?
20:34Borgate.
20:36Yes, or Borgata, yes.
20:37It's the plural of Borgata, which is a district of the Mafia.
20:41Yep.
20:41Which has been cropping up pretty consistently recently, yeah.
20:45Yes.
20:46John, Susie, anything else?
20:48Yeah, there's a nice eight lurking about, isn't there, which is Bergamot.
20:52I thought that was a detective, but apparently not.
20:55It is an oily substance extracted from the rind of a dwarf variety of Seville Orange.
21:03So there.
21:03Okay.
21:04Matt, you'd choose, please.
21:06Consonant, please, Rachel.

22:24Carpet.
22:25Yeah.
22:26Good for six.
22:29What have we got in a dictionary corner?
22:30A couple of sevens over here.
22:33One of them erratic.
22:34Erratic. That's a good word. Erratic.
22:37One of my favourites.
22:38And partier. Someone who parties.
22:41We got partier for seven.
22:43Very good.
22:44Another break for them now because we're back off to dictionary corner.
22:48It's origins of words time.
22:49For the last time this week, Susie, what have you got for us?
22:51Well, I was quite amused to see on an American dictionary maker's website
22:56their top ten British words.
22:58So the words that for them were quintessentially British
23:00and ones that just caught their fancy.
23:02So I thought I'd give you a selection of them today.
23:04The first one was Pratt, which is quite British.
23:08It probably comes from 16th century slang word Pratt, meaning buttocks.
23:12So the original Pratt fall was a fall on your bottom.
23:16Tuy, they liked, and that's a baby talk alteration of sweet.
23:19And it first appeared in Punch magazine in 1905.
23:23Plonk, a cheap wine, that's short for vin blanc, white wine.
23:27And finally Wally, which is very, again, very British.
23:30Many theories about this one.
23:31The most popular involves a Wally who was separated from his friends at a 1960s pop festival.
23:36The name was announced over a loudspeaker.
23:38The whole crowd chanted Wally, Wally, and so the word became cemented in English.
23:49Thanks, Susie.
23:50Matt on 52, Barry on 32.
23:53Let's see if Barry can do anything about the deficit because it's another numbers round coming up.
23:57And, Barry, it's you to pick them.
24:00Rachel, could I have one large and five small, please?
24:02Of course, thank you, Barry.
24:03One from the top and five from the bottom lot.
24:06And for this round, they are four, six, ten, five, seven, and seventy-five.
24:15And the target to reach 707.
24:18Thirty seconds to reach 707.
24:20Thirty seconds to reach 707.
24:51So we're looking for 707.
24:53And Matt, how close?
24:54707.
24:54Barry?
24:55708.
24:56OK, just the one away.
24:57Yep.
24:58Matt, let's hear that 707, please.
25:0075 take 5.
25:0175 take 5, 70.

25:09Ah, well done.
25:15Matt marches on to 62.
25:17Barry's got 32 at the moment.
25:19Here's another teaser.
25:20The words this time are gang icon.
25:23Gang icon.
25:24And the clue, I'm right behind you all the way, said the dancer.
25:27I'm right behind you all the way, said the dancer.
25:44I'm right behind you all the way, said the dancer.
25:47So, Conga-ing is the answer to our final teaser of the week.
25:51Matt Croy is on 62 at the moment, then Barry Crawford on 32.
25:57Matt, it's your selection.
25:58A consonant, please.
25:59Thank you, Matt.

31:04And yours, Barry? Sonar.
31:06Solar and sonar.
31:08Hmm.
31:09Now, any advance on five over in Dixery Corner?
31:12Well, there's salons for six, and sonars. What do we think of sonars?
31:18Yes, you can actually put the S on.
31:20The system for detecting objects underwater is a math noun, but actually the apparatus that you use to detect objects
31:27underwater is a count noun, so you can add the S for six.
31:30OK. But six as good as it gets, and this is the final numbers round of the contest. Barry, it's
31:36you to pick those numbers again.
31:37Have the same again, please, Rachel. One from the top, and any other five, please?
31:40Thank you very much, Barry. One large and five small. And the last numbers game this week is eight, seven,
31:48five, four, ten, and a large one, fifty.
31:54And this time the target, three hundred and nineteen.
31:57Thirty seconds to reach three-one-nine.

32:43seven three fifty ten times four is forty ten times four yep take that away then add the eight
32:51take it away for three hundred and ten and add the eight three eighteen one away okay and one

33:16the seven for three hundred and fifteen four three hundred and fifteen and that leaves you a four
