00:01South Korea will rapidly expand its drone and counter-drone capabilities to counter North Korea.
00:06That is according to Defense Minister Ahn-kyu Bae, speaking on Friday.
00:11The Defense Ministry will actively pursue a policy to train 500,000 drone warriors
00:16so that all personnel can develop the ability to use drones as a second personal weapon.
00:23The military initially planned to produce 110,000 drones by 2029,
00:27but later revised the figure to around 60,000.
00:30The goal is to make drones standard gear for soldiers across different services.
00:35The announcement comes as both Koreas accelerate efforts to build drone capabilities,
00:40drawing lessons from recent conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
00:43The new plan includes expanding counter-drone systems such as lasers and high-power microwave weapons,
00:49acquiring more than 20,000 low-cost expendable drones,
00:52and introducing AI-based swarm systems and loitering munitions.
00:56The push comes as Seoul faces a shrinking population,
00:59forcing the military to rely more on automation and unman the systems.
01:03It also aims to move past recent political controversy surrounding drone operations under the previous government.
