00:00Working moms versus stay-at-home moms.
00:03You have working moms, you have stay-at-home moms,
00:06and then you have work-from-home, stay-at-home moms.
00:11Oh, my God.
00:13Everything that structurally is set up
00:15is set up to make motherhood so damned hard.
00:19Does housework count as, well, real work?
00:22Culturally, we've never really told the truth about motherhood.
00:26If we're going to win the culture war,
00:28we have to start at home.
00:32What we were up against starting in the 70s
00:35was a very well-organized backlash campaign,
00:39pitting women against each other.
00:42They do want to take the wife out of the home.
00:45They do want to get them in the workforce.
00:47I know that you have the energy and the dedication
00:51to defeat this assault on the family.
00:56I think the 1970s start to snowball
00:58into what then became dubbed as mommy wars.
01:02Which comes first, the job or the family?
01:04It's often, I feel like, privileged women
01:06policing other women.
01:09The problem, she says, might just be women themselves.
01:12No one gets to the corner office
01:15by sitting on the side, not at the table.
01:17Who would you rather marry, a girl boss or a trad wife?
01:21Social media is a weapon.
01:26The algorithm is a weapon to reduce our humanity
01:29and pit us against each other.
01:30I feel like we cannot support each other
01:33when everything is political.
01:35All these moms that we're talking to
01:36are caught in the system.
01:40We leave mothers with no support
01:42and so the stakes are really high for them.
01:45The United States views motherhood very differently
01:48than a lot of other countries do.
01:49We really discard the mother
01:51by the time she's given birth to the child.
01:53I cannot be the only mom
01:55who literally wants to throw up
01:56thinking about sending their 12-week-old to daycare.
02:00We're trying to fix women
02:01instead of trying to fix the structure.
02:03We are the central nervous system for the home.
02:05We choose what our kids watch.
02:07We choose who they pray to.
02:08Some of us want to be career-oriented
02:10and then some of us don't.
02:12But what about those of us in the middle who are both?
02:14We never really fought for the ability
02:17for women to choose
02:18and for women to be able to move in
02:20and out of the workforce without penalty.
02:24You are a mother.
02:25You make the human race survive.
02:30What if we have a society where
02:32you didn't have to go back to work
02:3410 days after having a baby?
02:35What if you had a society
02:37where all your income didn't pay for child care?
02:41What if we had a society
02:42that didn't penalize you for being a mom?
