00:10Kazakhstan is bringing artificial intelligence into classrooms as part of its drive to build
00:15a digital economy. President Kasimzumar Tokayev has tasked the government with adopting an AI
00:20in schools roadmap by July 1st. The initiative will begin by narrowing the gap between urban
00:25and rural education, expanding access to modern learning tools for students across the country.
00:33Welcome to East-West Connect. We're highlighting business and economic opportunities in Kazakhstan
00:38and the wider Central Asian region connecting with Europe and beyond. This September, the
00:44government will launch a pilot project to equip 500 understaffed rural schools with reliable high-speed
00:50internet and modern technology, with implementation running through May 2027 ahead of a nationwide rollout.
00:58Teachers will deliver live and recorded lessons remotely to students in rural schools supported
01:03by a national AI platform that tracks performance and identifies struggling learners. Building on this
01:09digital push in education, more than 350,000 teachers have already completed AI training programs,
01:15while over 100,000 have gained access to OpenAI's GBT Edu platform for classroom use. By 2029,
01:22these measures are expected to reduce the number of underperforming students, ease administrative workloads
01:28for teachers, and expand personalized learning across the system. To discuss how this initiative will be
01:34implemented, we are joined by Sergey Kompanyiz, Kazakhstan's Vice Minister of Enlightenment.
01:41Mr. Kompanyiz, welcome to the program. Thank you.
01:43What gives you the confidence that these rural schools are ready to adapt AI successfully?
01:50Mr. Kompanyiz, welcome to the program. When we selected these 500 schools for a pilot, we
01:53started not only from the technical and infrastructure preparation of schools, but from the
02:00point of the pedagogical and organizational preparation of schools to launch new technologies.
02:05Mr. Kompanyiz, welcome to the program. There is a dual education system of education,
02:10the speaker, the principal, the professor, the professor will be in an online,
02:15the institutionally, will be in a different mode of training at some small-completon schools.
02:19Mr. Kompanyiz, the professor who is located locally in school, will answer the
02:22organizational issues, will help children to understand the material.
02:27So it is the main goal for the best teachers of our country to be available to our children,
02:32regardless of whether they live in the district center or in small school.
02:36How will teachers be trained to incorporate AI into the classroom in a meaningful way?
03:27Do you see AI becoming a subject in its own right or a tool embedded across all areas of learning?
03:34We don't consider these two approaches as a interdependent.
03:38On the other hand, we have to admit that AI became a separate area of knowledge.
03:43That's why we are ready for the next year.
03:48From 1 to 4, there will be a subject of digital expertise and AI.
03:52From 5 to 11, there will be information and AI,
03:56where we will teach our children how to use AI.
04:02Mr. Kompanietz, thank you for your time.
04:06A pilot project is already underway in Astana. Here's the story.
04:13State school number 101 in Astana has started tracking pupils' learning progress in real-time using artificial intelligence.
04:20Student activity is analyzed through smart cameras and audio tools in classrooms,
04:25as well as through work completed on tablets producing valuable feedback for teachers.
04:29Students are also equipped with high-performance computers, 3D printers, 3D pens and drones to develop practical digital skills.
04:36The main goal of our students is to create innovation projects in our school.
04:45We don't have anything to do.
04:47We don't have anything to do.
04:48The theory doesn't fit as a practice.
04:50The students don't always understand that all of our thoughts are different.
04:55Beyond the classroom, artificial intelligence is also being used to monitor students' well-being and help identify signs of bullying,
05:02alerting teachers and enabling faster responses to create a safer learning environment.
05:23The pilot is among a growing number of initiatives testing how AI can support post-learning outcomes and students' welfare,
05:30as Kazakhstan prepares for a broader rollout of artificial intelligence across its educational system.
05:38Joining us now is Soltanad Jumabaeva, director at the Ibrahimovic National Academy of Education.
05:46Ms. Jumabaeva, welcome to the studio.
05:49How could the introduction of AI in schools help improve productivity and learning outcomes among both students and teachers?
05:56It's not only improve, but it allows us to give the opportunity to the teacher and teachers to decide their
06:08internal needs and individual needs.
06:10So, we can move forward to the personalized education.
06:14The AI is an instrument.
06:16If the teacher and the teacher will always use the rules, which will be developed for everyone,
06:24and they will follow these rules, I think they will find a compromise between each other.
06:30So, how can schools prevent over-reliance on technology and preserve critical thinking and analytical skills among pupils?
06:37The Orioles for teachers?
06:38The 교육 is an institution, it is even as special, the supports for 1949,
06:46This tool allows us to maintain the balance between them and properly regulate the learning process.
06:55The child must think himself.
06:57He must extract information.
06:59He must extract data, find these data.
07:02And when the teacher gives this information,
07:05the most important task of the teacher is to find his point of view.
07:10To compare, to compare, to analyze.
07:11Could these developments help strengthen rather than weaken the relationship between teachers and students?
07:17In class, we have very different students.
07:20And for that, to be effective education,
07:23with artificial intelligence,
07:26we can access to a different students.
07:29To give them more difficult questions.
07:32To give them more complicated questions.
07:36They are required by their individual needs.
07:53That's all for now.
07:54See you in the next episode of East West Connect.
