Oregon, 1933: Samuel Murphy (Ethan Hawke) ist im Arbeitslager gelandet und muss dort unter knallharten Bedingungen in einem Steinbruch Steine schlagen. Eigentlich hat er noch 6 Monate vor sich, bis er entlassen wird. Aber der Aufseher Clancy (Russel Crowe) bietet ihm einen Deal an, der seine Haftzeit verkürzt. Dafür muss er Goldbarren durch die Wildnis schmuggeln , doch das entpuppt sich schnell els erbarmungsloser Überlebenskampf.
