00:13I'm joined by Evan Gambadella and Greg Duffy, who play Miles and Hunter in Straight Until He Kissed Me.
00:22So thank you guys. Thank you for being here sharing your thoughts on this film.
00:26Would you please introduce yourself and talk about the film, the character you play?
00:31Yeah, my name is Greg Duffy. I play the character of Hunter and we have been so
00:38excited by the response even just since it's been out for like a week, a week and a half.
00:44And a little bit about Hunter, if you don't know, Hunter is a straight-laced CEO who escapes being
00:49drugged by his latest female assistant, only to come face to face with his new assistant.
00:54The man who randomly kissed him in the coffee shop. Despite a rocky beginning, we'll call
01:03it, Hunter and Miles grow closer and discover that they actually work well together. Maybe
01:08as more than just co-workers. Oh my goodness. And maybe they aren't as straight as they both
01:14thought.
01:15Hey, I'm Evan and I play Miles. Miles is a medical intern who has everything going for him.
01:23He's got a hot girlfriend. Great hair. Whoever wrote that, by the way, thank you very much.
01:29And an amazing internship opportunity. But that all comes crashing down when he finds out his
01:35girlfriend is cheating on him. Awful. And then he accidentally kisses his new boss to make her jealous.
01:44What follows is a wild and wacky journey about self-love, self-acceptance, and the importance
01:51of good HR policies. Very important. Yeah. Thank you, Fiona. Don't fire me, please.
01:55You drugged the CEO and you still want to stay at his company? Dream on.
02:04And after this filming, you know, this, this show has been really successful on the internet.
02:09It's like basically went wild on TikTok, on Instagram. People are talking about this.
02:14What's, what's up with you guys? What's the life after filming this project?
02:21It's been crazy. I'm shocked. I'm shocked. Thank you to everybody who's been supporting us,
02:27this project, watching this. Um, I think I can speak for both of us when I say we did not
02:32expect
02:33this. Uh, we both fell in love with the story and we both fell in love with these characters,
02:38but we had no idea the response that was going to be received. I keep seeing comments that are like,
02:42oh my gosh, you guys aren't AI. Because people thought that we were made by AI. And the crazy,
02:47yeah, the crazy part is all the comments that I'm seeing and the people following us,
02:52are you guys AI? Because like, is this real? Is this actually happening? It's mind blowing.
02:56And I'm filled with so much gratitude. Thank you. Yeah. We had conversations while we were filming,
03:03like, I wonder how this will do in terms of resonating with people. And we basically concluded,
03:10like, let's just, we'll do the very best that we can make a really great story and it will just
03:15do
03:15what it does. You know, we'll just see if you tell a good story, hopefully it will resonate and find
03:18its people. And the past week has been the most insane feedback. I mean, it's been probably the
03:26craziest week of my entire life. The scale, like the messages we're receiving and how much it means
03:32to people. Um, and people who are like, even I've received messages like discovering who they are
03:38and that this is like a safe space for them, uh, because these characters are discovering who they
03:43are in this film. So the response has been so much bigger. I just feel so lucky that we've found
03:51this
03:51community that it really resonated with. And we're so excited to just be a part of it. I think we
03:56just
03:56feel like we're just members of this community that have come together around this story. And we're as
04:01lucky as anybody else to just be here and participate in it and love it as much as everybody else
04:05has.
04:09And how would you describe your character in three words?
04:16I'm not gay. Right. But are you not?
04:22Question mark. You say it enough in the story. I say it probably, I want somebody to count it.
04:27Not gay. I said I'm not gay. First of all, I'm not gay. I'm not gay. Breathe. You're not gay.
04:40You're not gay. I'm not gay. I'm not gay. Okay? Kate, I'm not gay. Okay? I'm not gay.
04:47And I'm not into dudes. Miles, remember, you're not gay.
04:53I'm not gay. Why does everybody think I'm gay? But I think, uh, Miles probably is bi.
05:01Because there's nothing in the script that says that he couldn't get it up with his ex-girlfriend.
05:05But with him, not the same with Hunter, unfortunately. It is a key plot point that Hunter
05:11does struggle with intimacy with women. We say that over and over again in the script. And then when he
05:19meets Miles, that changes. I converted him. Yeah. I would say for Hunter, he's big.
05:27He's a big, well, right. He's a big presence. I mean, all right. Let's not get full of ourselves here.
05:33He's a big presence. Uh, he is brooding. I mean, I think the thing about,
05:39about Hunter is that he doesn't show a lot of emotion, uh, for a lot of the story. And then
05:46he's like
05:46an iceberg that Miles melts over time. And we start to see more of the soft side of him. Um,
05:54and he's the boss. He's the big CEO. So I would say the big brooding boss is how I would
05:59describe Hunter.
06:05And then what would your character bring to a desert island? What I would bring to a desert island?
06:11I would, I mean, the right answer, I feel like, which is like, eh, whatever, kind of boring is my
06:15medical kit. But I think what I'd actually bring are cupcakes, not squished ones. I would eat them
06:24and they would not be put in my tits. Right. Well, if I was there, maybe. The woman was too
06:32stunned to speak. Well, the desert island is about to get really frisky. Let me tell you,
06:39I'm getting hot in here. I think Hunter would bring, uh, I think he's a workaholic. So Hunter would
06:46bring a laptop, but there's probably no wifi on the island. So we'd have to readdress that. And I
06:52think Hunter has good fashion choices. So I think Hunter, you know what, if this is where it all
06:56ends for him on this random desert island, he'd bring like a fire outfit. Yeah. Yeah. He actually
07:02was given these pants that were super sparkly. It was the coolest costume piece, I think for anybody.
07:09Yeah. And they were cut. They were cut. Well, because I was supposed to wear them on the first day
07:13and, uh, the director died. So I don't know if he would wear these yet. Yeah. He's not so like
07:18comfortable. He's not out yet. Yeah. And how would you describe this show in three emojis?
07:28Again, I feel like the right answer, the obvious answer is the student emoji, the kiss emoji,
07:35and then the CEO emoji. Right. But more, I want to get a little bit more creative here. I feel
07:42like it
07:42would be the, uh, cupcake emoji. Okay. The rainbow emoji, because you know. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
07:51Yeah. And then finally the, uh, banana emoji, because anybody who remembers.
07:58Hunter has erectile dysfunction. He can't even get it up.
08:05I would say for me, three emojis to describe the film would be, uh, the salad emoji.
08:13If you know, you know. Yeah. If you know, you know. Some salad and some salad dressing.
08:18Uh, I would say, I like the biting lip emoji. Like the, because there's a little tension in the
08:25office and that's like a little sexy tension on the biting of the lip. Um, and then I would,
08:30do the splash emoji. I just think it, that's the vibe of, you know, where we go with that.
08:35Yeah. With all those memes of my face now covered in salad dressing. Yes. Except in the script,
08:40I will say, it doesn't say salad dressing. It says a white sauce.
08:45What was that made out of by the way in the end? I think it was flour and water.
08:48Flour and water. It was just flour and water. We've been getting a lot of questions about what
08:50the white sauce is made of. Yeah. Oh, I'm sure they're asking. You can make your own at home.
08:57Uh, this is from chicken parm. How hard was it to keep a straight face? And then someone commented
09:04below, we need to know, especially the recreation of the really right in front of my salad scene,
09:09right in front of my salad. So what do you have to say about that? It was hard to keep
09:15a straight
09:15face, especially with the salad. Well, it, I think I had the privilege of being the one to like,
09:25make others laugh. So for me, it was like, I was trying my hardest to break everyone on set as
09:31much
09:31as I possibly could, which sometimes, you know, there were moments. We got close, but everyone's
09:37professional. Yeah. Yeah. I mostly laughed when we had scenes together and Evan, for those who don't
09:44know, is very good at improv. And so Evan would try new things every take and I would break every
09:51time. We would like, we'd have to redo it because it was like, so surprising. So a lot of the
09:56reactions
09:57of mine are actually really organic reactions that I had as an actor that worked enough for the story
10:03that they just kept it in. Like that last scene, especially that, I mean, so many, so much of this
10:08is improvised. Don't get me wrong. But that last scene, I was really trying to make Greg laugh.
10:12Like hard. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Especially with that voice. Oh yeah.
10:17Want to do that voice right now? This voice? The what? Oh, hey there, Mr. Ski, I'll understand.

10:32Why did the movie say the building has seven stories, but the elevator only has three?
10:37LOL. It actually was 17 stories in the script. Yes. Yes. You want to talk about that?
10:42Um, because the building we were filming in only had three floors. And we realized that on the day.
10:48On the day. Looks like there's an important scene where I come up next to Miles and I'm,
10:52it seems like I'm kissing, but I'm going for the button. And so we had to do a closeup on
10:55the button.
10:55It was part of that plot point. And the internet was like, there's only three floors in this building.
11:00And HR's on the 17th. We're like, sorry. Also, the scene was filmed on the same floor.
11:06Like we didn't go up the elevator. Yeah. Yeah. We couldn't go up the elevator.
11:08So like when the elevator doors open, we have not moved.

21:50And he starts to have a little soft spot for him because, uh,
21:53his ex's new boyfriend tries to throw a punch.

22:48But this particular moment was actually what I auditioned with for this.
22:53So this scene I felt the most comfortable with
22:55because I'd already done it multiple times for my self-tape.
22:58Also, I think they just kind of killed the lighting in this.

23:17So this is when, uh, Miles is sick the night before
23:23and Hunter lets him stay in his bed.
23:25And they wake up the next day and Miles realizes what's happened.
23:29And he realizes he's in his boss's house.
23:32And he's...
23:33I'm working out and he comes upon me.
23:36I'm sweating.
23:37They had to spray me with water to really look like sweat.
23:39And gave me dumbbells that weighed like a half of a pound.
23:42But I had to, like, pretend like, oh, I'm flexing.
23:45And then, um, and then I had this confrontation,
23:48which, uh,
23:50I tell Miles he needs to keep his personal and his professional lives separate.
23:54And if he doesn't, I will not hesitate to fire him.
23:57But we realize, uh, in my last line of the scene,
24:01where I think I came on too strong,
24:02that apparently I was trying to flirt.
24:05And I was trying maybe to even start seducing Miles
24:08because I started to have feelings for him.
24:09But I'm not very good at it.
24:11Also, the food here was absolutely incredible.
24:14And I ate all of it afterwards.

24:18Well, you had the bread.
24:19He was eating the bread.
24:21How do you eat bread during the scene?
24:22It was freshly baked bread.

24:50our first time doing any intimacy scenes.

24:59because he's claustrophobic.
25:01So this was our director Di, lovely director Di, the amazing director Di, walking us through
25:08what is about to happen.
25:10And I remember being like, I was starting to get into the world of what that panic attack
25:17was going to be in my body and knew like, it was going to be hard.
25:21We were filming it for a couple of hours and did it again.
25:24And you'd had a panic attack like 20 times.
25:27Yeah.
25:28Keep filming from different angles, from different shots.
25:30Yeah.
25:31And usually in the vertical world, you only have one take, sometimes two, if you're lucky.
25:36This scene, we had to get multiple, um, multiple coverage on just,
25:41I think because it was, it was a really big moment.

34:33I got started in verticals this year.
34:37This is my first year doing it.
34:39I think it's actually both of our first years doing it.
34:41Yeah.
34:42So my first was in February.
34:43I was in His Nerd.
34:45And that was sort of my break into the vertical world.
34:49Work started picking up and I did three with Good Short back to back.
34:52I had a corporate job that I decided to quit.
34:55I just missed doing artistic expression type of work.
34:59And so this was just a few months ago.
35:01And I got into my first vertical playing a supporting role.
35:06And then from there, yeah, I just got a few more.
35:08I mean, I think this role was like my third or fourth.
35:10So it wasn't like I'd had a bunch before that.
35:13And it was my first lead.
35:14And I was talking to people on sets of the prior verticals like,
35:17Hey, I want to be in a boy love vertical.
35:19I want to be in an LGBT story.
35:21And so once I started seeing that people like producers from other,
35:25you know, that I had worked with, they're like,
35:26Oh, I know this guy who wants to do this.
35:27So they were reaching out to me and DMing me like,
35:29Hey, there's this character.
35:30Would you do it?
35:31And that is how a lot of the roles have come about.
35:33People know that I wanted to do it.
35:35And that's how I ended up auditioning for this role too.
35:46We're actors.
35:47So I think that's the first thing, you know,
35:49this is a film and the medium is in vertical,
35:52but it's, it's a film, you know,
35:54and it's consumed episodically, right?
35:56There's definitely certain unique aspects to vertical films.
35:58Yeah.
35:58I think, um, the question I get asked all the time is,
36:02what is a vertical?
36:03What is this thing?
36:05And the way I explain it to people is a vertical is essentially
36:09a movie broken up into tick tock format
36:12where you're swiping up or swiping left to right.
36:14Sometimes depends on what you're watching on, uh,
36:18in minute, minute and a half episodes,
36:20rather than watching it nonstop for 90 minutes.
36:23Uh, it's typically very camp.
36:27It's very soapy and it is outrageous.
36:30Totally outrageous.
36:31The plots go in all different directions.
36:41They, they had a hard time watching me in roles there,
36:44that I was the bad guy in.
36:46Um, and, uh, this one was a gift to them,
36:50especially to my grandma who was like,
36:52I don't, I don't like watching you beat up people
36:54and being mean and a bully and stuff.
36:56Like this one, they actually enjoy watching.
36:58And it's cause it's so fun and it's a romantic comedy.
37:02And there's, uh, I, I, I love seeing romantic comedy in the vertical world.
37:06Cause I don't think there's as many of them as, um,
37:10as I think there should be.
37:11I think there should be more.
37:12I come from a really big family.
37:14So I, all of my siblings and I are like laughing about like the storylines
37:18and the plots and the everything that's happening.
37:21And then, you know, all of my friends have been so awesome
37:25about supporting this work too.
37:27And like I've hosted movie nights where we watch
37:30the vertical on screen on the TV,
37:33or like, you know, watching it on the big screen at home.
37:35And, uh, so it's been like an amazing outpouring of support from friends, especially.
37:50I think there's a lot of reasons.
37:52I think the biggest one for me is that growing up,
37:55I did not see content where, uh, being gay was even an option.
38:00Right. I, I, I didn't even know that the feelings that I was feeling were real.
38:05I didn't even know to call it love or a crush or anything like that until I was much older.
38:09So I think it's really important to have characters exploring their sexuality,
38:14um, coming out about their sexuality,
38:16and then also exploring what it's like to be out of the closet.
38:20And especially in those first few years, which is, um, probably the hardest after coming out,
38:24of figuring out how to be a queer person in the world and being true to yourself.
38:29Because coming out isn't just one thing.
38:31It happens over and over and over again.
38:33And, uh, the more that Good Short and other, um, companies do BL or queer or LGBTQ plus content,
38:42I think the world's going to be better for it.
38:53I'm getting emotional.
38:56I, you said it so well.
38:58Um, I think what's really nice in this story in particular is that it's like a fun rom-com and
39:04there's so much history to the queer community that's really important.
39:08And so a lot of times the stories are telling these really challenge, these challenges,
39:12complex challenges that queer people have faced throughout history.
39:14And we continue to face what was nice about this.
39:17And so many comments I've said, this is like,
39:19this is kind of lighthearted and this is fun.
39:21And this, you know, it's making me laugh and it's making me cry in a good way,
39:27but it's, it's a rom-com.
39:28And I just think to have a romantic comedy through a queer lens is something we haven't had
39:34that much to your point.
39:36And so I'm so excited to see these lighthearted, funny,
39:40campy stories come to life with a queer lens,
39:42because I think it's really just the, the front, the frontier of that moment.
39:46Yeah.
39:46Especially if we can transform coming out,
39:48which is something that for so many of us,
39:50I think for most people is a really scary thing to do.
39:54And to transform into something really funny and campy and quirky,
39:57and give a safe space to people to laugh and enjoy it.
40:01We have to be able to laugh at ourselves with this.
40:11I think for me, I am growing so much as a person and in my skill to act.
40:17I mean, I think like you start out and we always,
40:20I think that the myth of talent is like you're born with it or you're not.
40:23And I think actually it's very little of that.
40:26I think it's really like, how do you show up and practice and work
40:29and be willing to mess up and be willing to take a risk.
40:32And I think you did that so well, you take these improvisational risks
40:36and you make these choices with your voice.
40:38And so I think the biggest change in me is like being more of a risk taker,
40:43being willing to look silly for the sake of making something really exciting and true.

40:52Um, I'd say with, first of all, totally agree with Greg in that a great acting teacher of mine
41:00from high school, Ingrid Schaefer said that it's not the most talented person who gets ahead.
41:05It is the hardest working and that is, um, yeah, it is absolutely essential.

41:11Yeah, exactly.
41:13Um, I think what's changed in me since I've started, I mean, I've been acting a long time,
41:18but I've taken breaks and the, uh, the breaks that I've taken, I think, have sort of taught me
41:26how much I need this work and crave it. It feels almost like, um, an essential way for me to
41:32discover
41:33new parts of myself because every new character I play, I have to stretch myself in a different
41:37direction. Not to say that I have to, um, uh, learn traits from other characters that I can take on
41:45in
41:45real life. Sometimes that's the case, especially if they're good, but it's actually just an exercise
41:49in empathy.
41:58Wow. Um, every experience shapes who I am. I think, uh, I think, I think what I'm, uh, what I'll
42:07say,
42:08what I'm most grateful for specifically with this project has been the team that made it happen.
42:14Um, having Greg as a scene partner is probably the luckiest roll of the dice I could have asked
42:19for. I was so, I was so scared coming into this, uh, because also my first lead, uh, and my
42:26first,
42:26uh, time doing intimate scenes on camera, I was so scared he was going to be an asshole.
42:31Uh, sorry. He's not, he's far from it. He's so wonderful. And I, I, I couldn't have asked for
42:37somebody to make me feel more safe, more, um, grounded and, uh, able to be my silly, quirky,
42:45crazy self.
42:46I would say the trust that people gave to me to do this, uh, changed the way I thought about
42:54myself.
42:55Like, I don't think I would have thought I could have accomplished this and carried this story
43:01even six months ago, but you need other people in your life to be like, you got to go for
43:05this,
43:05or you need people to believe in you on the team that's casting and directing and say,
43:08we believe that you're the person to tell this story.
43:11And so that vote of confidence and affirmation made me really rethink like,
43:16yeah, I am the person that's going to be able to accomplish this. And that actually brought
43:20to the table the skills that I needed to get it done. So I think that the belief,
43:23the self-belief that came from the belief from everyone around me really changed me.
