02:00roddy roddy piper versus mr t having celebrities coming in to uh be part of this world wasn't always so
02:09welcoming and piper i felt was one of those guys who was just old school and it just needed to

02:15people that needed to be there not someone else coming in to maybe take the blind light away from
02:22those that worked so hard to be there i think the biggest thing with roddy piper is he felt that
02:26he
02:26wasn't really respected or appreciated by by mr t in some sort of way because i can't see roddy piper
02:32just hating mr d i can't i know right what i think this guy's doing to wrestling is damn right
02:42there is that thing of him wanting to protect the business and as far as a celebrity being in the
02:49ring right i think that's what bothered roddy because he felt it wasn't earned the fact that you
02:54passed it to me what just eats me inside i didn't know roddy piper very well but i met him

03:01it seemed to me like he had a chip on his shoulder absolutely about how good he was how he
03:07thought
03:07people should give him more credit for how good he was and you know and then you know mr t's
03:11kind of
03:11a tough guy not tougher than me piper just didn't like him just plain and flat out did not like
03:20just never liked him from day one
03:26rottie was born in saskatoon saskatchewan it was a hard upbringing he always kind of felt like he was
03:34an afterthought in his family is what he would tell me not a lot of hugs not a lot of

03:42i left home when i was 13 i lived on the street for two years so i had a lot

03:57i was angry and i was lost about this time was also when he was visiting youth hostels and
04:05going to gyms to work out and a owner of the gym and promoters there saw that he had something

04:13he fell into wrestling and the right people saw him and said hey son you want to do this and
04:19and he did
04:21and it just rolled and rolled and rolled because he put everything into it like he does with everything
04:27i'm so fortunate to have wrestling and the way it evolved if it hadn't i would have been dead there

04:38here's who i am in a nutshell i got seven brothers and four sisters living on south side chicago
04:43welfare food stamps my mother had to knock on the neighbor's door to borrow a quarter 50 cent so i

05:39after high school i was a bodyguard and a boxer and a bouncer at the disco i had a reputation

05:46being the tough bodyguard the bouncer and that's who i am at the same time nbc had this contest games
05:55people play they want to find out who was the toughest bouncer in america so i entered the
06:00contest on nbc and all of a sudden here's this colorful character and he comes across like a genuine
06:06badass and then you never know who's watching right sylvester stallone
06:13he goes to one of the biggest movie franchises in the history of america and being a toe-to-toe
06:20legitimate rival to rocky balboa you know you've got a big mouth you know
06:27mr t was unlike anything anyone had really seen when he burst on the pop culture scene in the 80s
06:36at the time mr t is probably one of the most recognizable celebrities
06:44it just keep getting bigger i was invited to the white house kid from the ghetto get invited
06:50to the white house to meet the president ronald reagan his wife nancy reagan me wow
06:57roddy piper in the mid 80s has gone to wwe and you now have the top bad guy in the
07:11entire business
07:12the boss is back everything roddy got in this business he earned it and i don't think anyone
07:20did it like roddy but just when they think they got the answers i changed the questions mike skills
07:28top one percent because i was rowdy before rowdy was cool at that time
07:37couldn't touch me
07:40during the 80s the wrestling business was changing you have just tuned in
07:45to the rock and wrestling connection right here on mtv it was a crazy time frame to see suddenly
07:53the biggest celebrities in the world and you're seeing them with wrestlers i have a golden platinum
07:59record to give to the world wrestling federation and the fans wwe starts to become this pop culture
08:08thing you gotta remember too without us they're neither oh my god either way this became mainstream
08:18popular this was different like there was something really big going on like bigger than i ever imagined
08:24like this was huge and so for mr t wwe would be a natural venue for that kind of personality

08:36doubt wwe was trying to figure out who the key players were in pop culture who were willing to
08:44play ball and also who made sense as a brand fit we were watching the a-team we sure as
08:52heck we're
08:52watching rocky 3 and there were big brains and big voices that said these are the eyeballs we need on
08:59our
08:59product i was in the rocky movie and mr t had been a friend of mine from the movie we
09:07had a conversation
09:08one thing led to another we got this whole new plan in motion you know we said well we could
09:14do business
09:15with it it was strictly business wwe was establishing what it was going to become it was saying this
09:23wrestling thing is great but if we add a more clear layer of just outright entertainment then we have a
09:31spectacle
09:34and welcome to madison square garden tonight ladies and gentlemen the war to settle the score
09:41the hottest ticket in town at the time i had a rivalry with piper and the war to settle the
09:48score
09:49was a big blow off between me and him and tonight heavyweight champion hulk hogan with the final
09:56offense against tillinger roddy roddy piper in a corner of roddy roddy his bodyguard his arm in a sling
10:04ace cowboy ball borton he had orton i had cindy lopper i mean it was just crazy cindy lopper she
10:13was a
10:13female vocalist of the year that year that has nothing to do with business and it's stupid i mean
10:19one-on-one stupid madison square garden will be ruthless minutes from now they'll blow the top off

10:31eventually unforeseen circumstances work their way into the match call mr wonderful

11:16star then i mean you're as big as you can at the time about as big as you could possibly

11:21legit tough guy and everybody knew it mr t on his feet everyone's on their feet so then i came
11:28up and
11:28i just i wasn't supposed to i just came off the tee and slapped him hard all of a sudden
11:39a new york
11:40city policeman with a uniform and a gun is in the ring and there comes another one like everybody
11:47that's not supposed to be in there is in there what's going on we have to come back now security
11:55holding everyone back it was a little bit now because it's so old i think about it you know
12:01it was nine of the keystone cops what is going on ladies and gentlemen it's pandemonium
12:06what happened to our backs it was just wild ladies and gentlemen
12:12the winner of this fight as a result of a disqualification hulk hogan
12:32i love you man i love you you know i like it ever since we did rocky three man then
12:38when i saw
12:39sitting around i just like to see a good match i like to go to wrestling but i don't like
12:42to see
12:42no stuff going on unfair when the guy hits sydney i don't like that i think that's a chump and

12:45sister's gotta hit a lady you know for mr t it was wwe's way to interject him you know in

12:51really high profile main event way the only way this guy holds this title is he has this he has
12:56this stupid guy with some ridiculous haircut if you want this geek mr t to come in i'll be glad

13:01put an x where the t is i don't really give a damn man but shortly after that it was
13:05like crazy
13:13it's now official it will be hulk hogan mr t against rowdy rowdy piper mr wonderful paul orndorff
13:19wrestlemania we're gonna be ready for these guys the piper and orndorff and whoever else he got the
13:25broken arm mr t came in and it was just like are you kidding me it's hollywood it's wwe that's
13:30happening
13:30together this is like wow oh man that was he just so much he piper was so entertaining in this
13:37the heat was supposed to be i feel like between hogan and piper but it really was more with piper
13:43and mr t you're looking at someone that will take you and make nothing of you will take your life
13:50and not even think twice about it i have been brought up old old school one of the rules is
13:58this
13:59if you bring me somebody outside our business i'm gonna eat his lunch i don't care who he is

14:33you feel this human nature need to to try to protect it or insulate it from the outside this

14:54life literally and it gave me a family that i didn't have i was protecting every one of those
15:04people i was protecting the entire business for everybody t mr t we're supposed to call him mr are
15:11you rubbing me you knew that that heat was real i remember this interview where roddy piper approached
15:19mr t who was on the set well here i am on the a team of course i'm creeping up
15:24on the back of mr t i
15:26can tell you that because it's got it written right here on the back of your chair mr he's telling

16:30the barbaric mindset of piper and orndorff he's an actor he's not a wrestler we're just gonna break
16:35his legs this is exactly what you could end up booking like here and there would be no more a

17:29wrestlemania coming up here for a training session that i cannot believe come on t for piper man
17:34that was the first rouse mania i said i got to get ready this ain't no joke i said my
17:39reputation is on the
17:40line come on you got a sick move man they have to find out that i wasn't just passing through
17:45wrestling that was legit i'm honored to be a part i'm honored to be with you guys i want to
17:50get a
17:51guy as they respect and they do are you ready let's do it do it slow with me come on

17:55roddy piper he's not looking at that only thing piper sees is a guy coming in trying to perhaps
18:02taking your spot they're out training you think in three miserable weeks you can get in good enough

18:16you saw that they were taking this very seriously like he needed to be in
18:19peak condition because especially if somebody's not a trained professional wrestler
18:25that's where things can really go awry but you also understand the historical significance of this
18:30first wrestlemania this thing doesn't work there's not wrestlemania 2. maybe not even wwe anymore
18:36that's right because we went into wrestlemania 1 i remember it was a fear that the whole company
18:42was going to go bust like wrestlemania 1 would be the one big show and it's a big flop turn
18:47it kind
18:48of kills the whole business our whole lives were on one this is what's either going to make us or
18:54break
18:54us the whole world knows about this man hulk hogan and mr t that's why we were on every single
19:01show
19:01every single program the schedule was relentless march 31st wrestlemania mr t hulk hogan running wild
19:07daddy hulkamania hypomania we are the dream team the best thing to ever happen to wrestle
19:14to host saturday night live was being anointed very few celebrities reached that level about 12 hours from
19:21now madison square garden wrestlemania that is you see mr t getting a lot of benefits and you're
19:29working just as hard and you're not getting as many benefits i think that there is some resentment
19:35it was personal
19:42when the very first wrestlemania came along hype was so high
19:48new york madison square garden it was electric tickets for sunday's sold out brawl at the garden
19:54have been going for as much as a hundred dollars a pop we were all excited about putting our best
19:59foot forward this is our opportunity to gain some more momentum everything was on the line that night at
20:05wrestlemania but then i get this crazy call screaming hogan hogan i was ready to have a nervous breakdown
20:19wrestlemania one hulk hogan and mr t versus roddy piper and mr wonderful paul orndar
20:25i was gonna get it it's such a big platform and of course it's really setting the tone for for
20:31so
20:32many wrestlemanias to come because at the time like you said it was the first one and fans typically
20:37will it's hard to accept someone from the outside and it's a big challenge for whoever the person is
20:43whatever however biggest celebrity you might be
20:47the day of wrestlemania i get this crazy call screaming hogan hogan mr t is downstairs and he's leaving
20:59there's like a spiral drive up to the garden i went running down the spiral and right when i got
21:05there
21:05it was this extra long white stretch limo mr t's got like 15 people he's hurting in the car we're
21:10out
21:10here i'm done i ain't wrestling mr t was so hard to do business with even the day of the
21:16garden mr t won
21:17two limousine for people frank sinatra does it but he doesn't he won't then i'll just leave you know
21:24doing that old baloney he was looking for a reason not to get in the ring basically he was getting
21:31cold
21:31feet i wasn't surprised eat my shorts i stopped the limo driver you're not going anywhere
21:47i said he's not getting out of my sight so i sat in a room with him for like three
21:53three and a half
21:53hours and man he was just soul searching there's a lot of distractions you know i'm trying to think
21:59about what i got to do everybody trying to calm me down it's all right just remember stuff we practice
22:03on don't forget your mood that you're supposed to do concentrate on that once we got out to the ring
22:09and that red light came on he was there welcome everyone the wrestling extravaganza of all-time
22:18wrestlemania the first wrestlemania it was electric first of all because there was no game
22:23plan there was no book nobody knew how we were going to get anywhere this was just a mega event
22:30it was all brand new so it all seemed like a spectacle
22:35one of the greatest baseball managers in history you got billy martin now you got the
22:40liberaji in the rock head man you got muhammad ali the greatest looking for mingness
22:48hulk hogan and roddy pipe this is the genesis of the first wrestlemania but the real life heat
22:55between piper and t look at the look on piper's face one of disdain and disgust this felt even more
23:03dangerous mr t and rowdy roddy piper nose to nose in the center of the ring hogan said man watch
23:10that
23:10guy man he's really mad oh slap across the face and a return slot by mr t slap me and
23:20i slap him back
23:20and he said don't hold back on me and i want to hold back on you
23:29i demanded that with t the only thing i'd do is amateur wrestling because i heard he was an amateur
23:35wrestler piper pushes their animosity and he told mr t pick me up in a fireman's carry
23:44piper's a total professional he wanted the match to be memorable
23:52and that was the photo that went all over the world look out pino in the wrong corner here comes
23:58the hook and all four of them are going out of the corner ace bob orton is getting into the
24:02ring
24:03cowboy bob order who's supposed to be piper's bodyguard scampers up the ropes
24:10his intended target is uh hulk hogan and uh in the lines of hitting mr wonderful and it ends in
24:17the most chaotic fashion the ending was for a lot of fans a bit unsatisfying there were a lot of
24:38different scenarios that were discussed for that match but there's no payoff for this whole rivalry
24:46between roddy piper and mr t we're left hungry we want to see what will ultimately happen when we do
24:54get roddy against t and so we set on a path where that happens just not exactly in the way

25:04thought it would just when the wwf believes it knows all the answers the rowdy one changes the questions
25:11his latest bombshell is boxer bob orton bob orton of course was like the ne'er-do-well bad guy

25:18of roddy pipe we thought that we would put an open contract out for anybody who has ever had the
25:25wrestling trunks on it's a funny thing the boxing match at a wrestling show if you want to put the
25:31gloves on this is all you gotta do but again this was going to become something bigger you just gotta
25:38step up and say boo roddy piper he starts uh issuing you know open challenges who wants to get some
25:45of
25:45this yeah bozo visits the zoo my goodness are you kidding are you trying to tell me that you have
25:54come out here because you want to don the boxing gun are you Hulk Hogan shows up Hulk's not a
26:00boxer
26:00but guess who is i don't give a damn who's name you put on there you sign it he'll fight

26:33everybody goes crazy now we have this match between cowboy bob horton and mr t what made more sense
26:40because he was a legit boxer come on you were going into a boxing match there's an element of danger
26:49there too that's still a performance but also this two physical worlds colliding
26:59of course mr t we all saw you in rocky three in rocky three with just a movie but this
27:03is for real
27:07what are you hiding your face for huh i went high in my face and all of that as they
27:12come to center
27:13ring now a nice spin round match up oh look what's that look what look what roddy just did
27:18now okay i'm going to bring it look at this amp might be very impressive mr t hammering away
27:24roddy pepper on the apron obviously he intentionally distracted the referee and look what happened
27:27behind the referee's back roddy with a round oh he hit orc mr t connects
27:45out cowboy bubbler here comes piper wait a minute that leads to an altercation
28:14and that leads into wrestlemania 2. standing by on the set of the a-team
28:21in los angeles california right now mr t that's right all you wrestling fans out there you've seen
28:26what happened to me on mars the first that's right so that means it's gonna be mr t and piper
28:30in wrestlemania 2. mr t and piper so you better wrestlemania 2 in 1986 they pitted myself against
28:39mr t in a boxing match i think the boxing thing plays for a couple of reasons we'd be remiss
28:48to not point out how big mr t's role was in rocky three you're tapping into this part of people's
28:54sort
28:55of collective subconscious that's like i've seen mr t be a badass boxer before at the same time
29:03piper is more of a fighter than a technical wrestler himself boxing is the perfect thing
29:19what's the response from mr t i'm gonna get my help from joe frazier who at the time is as
29:28iconic
29:28a figure in all of sports as anyone in the world don't stop me i got a rule going smoking

29:35gonna be smoking right bro right right smoking both of those guys had that intensity that fighting them
29:40to go out there and neither one of them was gonna back down he's got this vendetta because he could

29:46get a hold of me last time in wrestlemania now he wants to box me this crazed idiot yeah hope

31:20it's time for the main event a scheduled 10 rounds of boxing in wrestlemania 2 now we box it
31:29first of all let me tell you people out there sir it's not my idea to be talking right before

31:33fight i don't like to do a lot of talking my fist gonna do the talking in the ring you
31:36know we can
31:36talk all day i don't know what i might do to pipe if i know it's gonna be getting hurt

31:43we hit the gloves on all right round one we was punching and whatnot so that's what we're gonna
31:50do roddy we get to throw jabs i remember roddy piper throwing the jab throwing the jab and piper
31:55always he was always good with his hands piper look at this and mr t uh you get hit one

32:01thing you're gonna do is fire back t with a peekaboo look at this not getting hit the whole notion
32:07that anything can be completely and totally scripted is false
32:15they wanted me to do a particular spot that spot was mr t catches me with the left hook
32:22and i go out of the ring onto the floor i refused again to put him over but um i
32:31said okay just this
32:33spot so it's coming time for that spot i'm doing my job i'm doing what i need to do so
32:42i'm going bomb
32:43bomb bomb here comes the left hook oh right out of the ring right out of the ring
32:53the only thing is he missed
32:59he missed the left hook you idiot

33:24but that never was my intention to hurt them or whatever you know

33:34i know there's no playbook here but it's a lot more serious than everybody's saying i'm the only one
33:39in there i take the heat you know what there's not many guys that can hold the line

33:56and i was brought up in such a stormy weather that i you can't make me back up you have

34:05both fighters aren't weary in this structure i got this idiot i'm trying to see what's going

34:31i have to imagine that they had some semblance of an idea of how it was going to go but
34:37did anybody know what was actually going on here you know it sort of seems like real chaos to some
34:44extent it can get dangerous in there if somebody doesn't really know what they're doing you get
34:49lost you're in the headlights yeah somebody's hurt yeah but there's also that like you never know what
34:53mr t is capable of now look at t over the corner of body piper there's no communication happened so

35:24okay if i just take this guy out without telling him what am i going to do i got my

35:32shoulders there's a lot of rules and we'll never get to them all to go in there and snake them

35:45oh and a right hand by piper my boy clearly it doesn't look like a real boxing match it actually
35:53resembles a real fight oh oh what a right hand by roddy piper and not mr t's mouth he's right

36:00roddy did not want to be beaten by an actor everything he had worked so hard from
36:07a young team was now worldwide so this huge image he had built it just couldn't be taken down by

36:19actor walking in the ring and arrived by piper and he left piper just says you know what i'm done

36:27and it's a little more physical
36:41everyone jumps in the ring
36:45it turns into complete chaos
36:49ladies and gentlemen the decision as a result of a disqualification mr t
36:57and finally piper disqualified and i thought mr piper was bending and breaking the rules all the way
37:04through the matchup it's probably for me it's one of the matches i'm most ashamed of i think
37:13um i should have taken him out this is not mr t's fault by the way i don't care who
37:19you stick opposite
37:20of piper on this you're not going to have a good working boxing match to give a big payoff it
37:26just

41:16this business owes a lot to that rivalry between hot rod roddy piper and mr t they did some special

41:28that even if you don't really get along with whoever you're partnered with wrestlemania it's a big
41:33moment to share with someone right what is going on ladies pandemonium their real life animosity it
