Irlande, années 70. L’ancien militaire irlandais Michael O’Hara et sa femme attendent un heureux évènement prochainement. Ils décident de changer de vie mais Michael est toujours recherché par les Forces Spéciales de l’armée britannique. Ils sont assaillis lors du passage d’une frontière et Michael est témoin de la mort de sa femme suite à l’intervention du sergent britannique Tempest. Michael est blessé et laissé pour mort. Il s’enfuit à Londres où il entre en contact avec des membres de l’IRA. Il a soif de vengeance.
