That breathes behind forbidden walls?
That lingers through forgotten rhymes,
Through ancient songs and sacred calls?

That fills our thoughts and haunts our lips,
That lights the lamps on midnight streets,
That roars above the crowded bars,
Where lonely souls and strangers meet.

That sweeps across the marketplace,
Like something no one dares to see.
It dwells within creation's heart...
What could it be?

What knows no certainty,
Nor ever will.
What knows no remedy,
Nor ever will.
What has no measure.

What could it be, what could it be,
That wakes within a lover's dream?
That every fearless poet sings,
Yet slips beyond what words can mean.

That drunken prophets swear they've found,
That walks beside the maimed in prayer,
That keeps its dwelling in the hearts
Of those acquainted with despair.

That shares the days of prostitutes,
The nights of outlaws wandering free,
Among the lost, the dispossessed,
In every human destiny.

What knows no decency,
Nor ever will.
What knows no censorship,
Nor ever will.
What answers none.

What could it be, what could it be,
That every warning fails to bind?
Because each laugh returns again,
Because each bell outlives its chime.

Because each anthem still shall rise,
Because each child runs wild and free,
Because all destinies converge,
Like rivers seeking out the sea.

And even the Eternal Father,
Looking where no eyes agree,
Might bless that everlasting fire,
And smile upon the mystery.

What could it be, what could it be,
That no one governs, none can own?
That never learned the face of shame,
Nor ever bowed before a throne?

Forever wild and forever free?
Beyond all reason, beyond all names...
