00:03Hey everyone, welcome to In Studio. We have Karamo Brown in the house!
00:08What's going on?
00:09I am excited to be here. Today has been an extraordinary day.
00:12We are so excited to have you. Season 3 has dropped.
00:16Fans are loving it.
00:17Yes.
00:18For those who have not binge watched yet, get on it.
00:22But, what can you tell us?
00:24It's probably one of the most exceptional seasons thus far.
00:26Yeah.
00:26You know, when we met a year ago, we were strangers.
00:29We had a lot of people telling us how to do our categories.
00:33And this time around, we are all so confident.
00:37Yeah.
00:37I am giving full therapy sessions.
00:40Jonathan is giving you full fabulousness.
00:42Anthony is giving you full smolder and great meals.
00:45I mean, it is just probably all of us.
00:48The makeovers Bobby does are out of this world.
00:50We're all just so confident about who we are as a team.
00:54And it's great.
00:55It's half women, half men.
00:57We have our first lesbian.
00:59I mean, it's just great all around.
01:01It seems like the pieces have fallen into place.
01:04Yes.
01:04Now, you know, you were labeled as a culture expert, you know, in the beginning.
01:08Now, how has your role specifically evolved into Season 3?
01:13Well, I think from Season 1, I always went in with the intention to be the one who has to
01:18fix the hearts and minds.
01:20You know, to figure out why haven't you cut your hair in 20 years?
01:23What's going on here?
01:34Yeah.
01:34You know, which embarrassed me to be very honest with you because I was like, I have this degree and
01:37I'm here to fix the hearts and minds, yet I'm doing this.
01:41And the therapy sessions I was doing were getting cut out where now they've seen how the audience loves that
01:49I am focusing on mental health.
01:50They love that I'm talking about the emotional stuff and they have went fully full with it.
01:56So, you see a lot of that evolution.
01:58They still won't change the title from culture to life coach or therapist, but I'm working on them.
02:03So, you want life coach or therapist?
02:06I am.
02:07So, you know, change it, but yeah, I think they will never change that.
02:12Now, a lot of people don't know is you have a background in social work and therapy and this is
02:17just what you do.
02:18Yes, I was a licensed social worker and psychotherapist for 12 years before getting into television.
02:22Wow.
02:23And so, me helping people to get to their emotional core is not just for TV, it's something that I
02:28enjoy doing, that I'm trained to do.
02:30And that's why I feel our heroes are able to have long-lasting transformation because I love what my brothers
02:40do.
02:40I mean, I could never cut someone's hair or change their home.
02:44Right.
02:44But I know that what I'm doing is a key element because once you figure out why you haven't been
02:49able to change and you heal from that is when you're able to continue that change.
02:53Yeah.
02:54How much time do you get to sit down and spend with the heroes?
02:57Because there's five of you guys and you guys weren't there for very long.
03:02How long do you have the heroes for?
03:03How long is that transformation?
03:04We have the heroes for four days.
03:06I spend the most amount of time with them.
03:08Okay.
03:09Bobby spends the least amount of time with them.
03:11And the reason I spend the most amount of time is because, and this doesn't make the camera, is because
03:16I have to figure out what their emotional issues are.
03:18You know, the producers are really good with giving us information, but we have to dig.
03:22And so for me to figure out what happened 15 years ago, I just can't ask you that in a
03:26conversation.
03:27It can't be like, hey girl.
03:28Yeah.
03:28So tell me about 15 years ago.
03:29Yeah.
03:30People will like clam off.
03:31So that's why a lot of times you see me in car rides with people because it's my way of
03:36sitting them down quiet one-on-one and getting them to open.
03:39So I drive them a lot to meet with the other guys so I can get more information and dig
03:44more stuff out of them.
03:45Are the cameras always on when you're talking to them?
03:48100% always on.
03:49Always on.
03:49Yeah.
03:50Always.
03:50And mics are always on.
03:52And they let the heroes know.
03:54So that way they, in case they drop a jewel that it doesn't get left on the cutting room floor
04:00because no one heard it.
04:01Yeah.
04:01You know, in my research I was reading that you had said something about we're always so quick to talk
04:07about fitness but not mental health.
04:10Yes.
04:11It's one of my missions is that we talk about our mental fitness or our mental health the same way
04:17we talk about our physical health.
04:18Mm-hmm.
04:19Because we are all so happy to talk about, hey, I'm on a new diet.
04:23Yeah.
04:23Hey, I'm going to the gym twice a week.
04:25Yeah.
04:25Oh my gosh, I'm jogging now.
04:27I'm hiking.
04:28But yet we will never talk about when we're feeling anxiety, when we're feeling sad.
04:32Or when someone is on a journey of healing, we don't give them the space to heal for longer.
04:38So like if someone has been in a relationship for two years and they break up, it's like after two
04:42weeks we're like, oh, they're still talking about it.
04:44Yeah.
04:45And I'm like, if someone broke their leg and were rehabilitating, you wouldn't be annoyed that they were still limping.
04:51Right.
04:51You would be like, you can do it.
04:53You can get better.
04:54You'll be walking and running soon.
04:55And I don't know why we don't give people that same ability and permission to talk about their mental health
05:01the same way.
05:02And so I'm in a space to encourage that.
05:04Mm-hm.
05:04Talk about your feelings.
05:05Do it more and more.
05:06Now, many of us don't have the luxury to have a lifeline or, you know, to give you a phone
05:11call.
05:11So do you have a chance?
05:12Yes, you do.
05:13Listen, that's what social media is about.
05:14I say, I don't call people fans.
05:16I call everyone my friends.
05:17And so I do that specifically to let them know, hit me up.
05:20Yeah.
05:20I think out of the guys, Jonathan and I, I know this is not your question, but I just want
05:24to be clear.
05:24That's fine. Bring it on.
05:24Jonathan and I probably respond to the most DMs.
05:27And I give advice consistently because I'm like, if you really need help and you don't know where to turn
05:32and I'm in bed, I can answer your questions.
05:36Like, it's not going to take anything out of me.
05:39I also know how to set clear boundaries so I know I can answer a question, give you what I
05:43can.
05:43Right.
05:43And then I'm not going to engage.
05:45I'm going to refer you to someone else.
05:46But Jonathan and I are pretty good at, like, responding.
05:49So if you do need help, hit me up at Karamo and I got you.
05:53Now, something you're very candid about, and we were going to talk about this a little later,
05:56but you have a book coming out.
05:58You have a book coming out.
05:59I do.
05:59And something I noticed about this book is you are very candid in there, but also you're telling people your
06:04life story,
06:05but just as you're saying now, you give people little tips.
06:08Like, hey, if you're having suicidal thoughts, stop right now, call this helpline.
06:12Yes.
06:12You know, that kind of thing.
06:13Well, when I wanted to write a book, I actually wanted to write an advice book.
06:17Mm-hmm.
06:18And they were, the publisher who was very smart was like, let's slow down.
06:23There's, though Queer Eye's success, there's a lot of people who don't know who you are.
06:26Right.
06:27And they should learn more about your journey and how you got to this place where you're able to love
06:32yourself and help people love themselves.
06:35And so I decided to mesh the two where I was giving intimate stories from my life with these universal
06:41topics that people could say,
06:43oh, I've experienced that, or I know someone who's experienced it, and then I drop it always with clear tips
06:48and language on how to solve that problem in your own life.
06:51Right.
06:52So that way you can see how I got through it.
06:54Because I hate when I read memoirs and it's like, me, me, me, but then you don't give me anything
06:57on how to solve my own problems.
07:00You know what I mean?
07:00Right.
07:00You get a takeaway.
07:01Yeah.
07:02So I talk about, like, I suffered from addiction for a while.
07:04Mm-hmm.
07:05And we, a lot of times, think of addiction just as drugs and alcohol, but many people have addiction to
07:10food, porn, to unhealthy relationships.
07:14Mm-hmm.
07:15Come on.
07:16Let's talk about it.
07:16That's a lot.
07:17Um, you, you find yourself with the same guy, that's an addiction to an unhealthy relationship.
07:22Um, and I give you clear tips on how do you get past that?
07:26Mm-hmm.
07:26How do you acknowledge that and move past it?
07:28Because I've had to do that myself.
07:30Right?
07:30Yeah.
07:30You bring up relationships, and last time you were here, you had just gotten engaged.
07:35Uh-huh.
07:35Tell me all about wedding plans.
07:37Let me tell you something.
07:38Okay, bring it on.
07:39Um.
07:39Now, I just got married, so I was just there.
07:41I know, I saw this ring.
07:42This is beautiful.
07:44Oh my gosh.
07:44Um, so my wedding planning is giving my fiance complete anxiety.
07:49Mm-hmm.
07:49He has been to the hospital twice.
07:52Twice.
07:52I'm not joking.
07:53I'm not joking.
07:54Okay.
07:55Um, and so I just like now keep him out of the plans.
07:57Yeah.
07:57Um, I mean, you know, I told him that I'm gonna pay for majority of it because he would,
08:02we could get married right here and he wouldn't care.
08:04Okay.
08:04Um, but I want it lavish.
08:07So, we were at the Vanity Fair Oscar party.
08:09Uh-huh.
08:10And I saw Priyanka and Nick Jonas.
08:13And in my mind, I ran up to them and said, my wedding's gonna be better than yours.
08:18Wow.
08:18That's not the truth because I don't have as much money as them.
08:21But in my mind, that's who I'm competing with.
08:23Okay.
08:24Like, I wanna get married with a long cape, which I'm already having designed.
08:28Uh-huh.
08:28And I was like, how long was Priyanka's?
08:31Because I need mine to be that long.
08:32At least.
08:33At least.
08:34That long.
08:35That long.
08:35Or maybe an inch longer.
08:37So that way I can just be like, oh, yours was only 72.
08:40Mine's was 74.
08:41You know, like.
08:41Yeah.
08:42That thing.
08:43But, um, it's going really great.
08:45Um.
08:45A Ferris wheel?
08:46We do have a Ferris wheel.
08:47Tell me about the Ferris wheel.
08:48Oh yeah, I talked about it out of the view.
08:49We have a Ferris wheel.
08:50Um, so, one of the special moments my fiance and I had is that we were on a Ferris wheel
08:55and by
08:56the top of it, I knew I wanted to marry him.
08:57Mm-hmm.
08:58And I think that Ferris wheels are one of those things where you're in close quarters, you
09:02get to be intimate, you communicate.
09:04And I want people to come to the wedding and have this moment where they can get on a Ferris
09:07wheel and hopefully by the top of it, they remember why they're in love or they fall in love.
09:12And so, that's why I have that there.
09:14That's great.
09:15Yeah.
09:15There's food trucks, there is DJs, um, there might be horses.
09:22Okay, can I ask, are there any drag queens?
09:24Um, well we have drag queen, we have drag queen friends so of course they're gonna be
09:28there.
09:28If they wanna be in drag.
09:29Okay.
09:30Um, yeah.
09:31So, yeah.
09:32That's exciting.
09:33Can't wait.
09:34Yeah.
09:34Any more details that you wanna bring up?
09:37No.
09:38Um, I will tell you this, that unfortunately it is, the wedding's not until 2020.
09:42Because the venue we wanted, which is this 30 acre, um, venue in Palm Springs, was not available
09:49on the date we wanted.
09:50Oh, man.
09:51So, we had to wait another year.
09:53Okay.
09:53Which is okay with me, cause it's more time to spend more money and plan more lavish stuff.
09:57Priyanka and Nick, I'm coming for you.
09:59Oh, man.
09:59I promise you I'm coming for you.
10:02Um, just to switch gears a little bit, um, you've spent some time on Capitol Hill.
10:07You've met with, um, Karen Pence's office about art funding.
10:11You work with the Obama Foundation.
10:13Yes.
10:13Now, is politics something that you're moving towards?
10:16Um, yes, 100%.
10:17Yeah.
10:18I'm not even gonna pretend.
10:19Um, I have been always involved, when I was 21 I actually ran for city commissioner.
10:24Okay.
10:24In Tallahassee.
10:25And, um, dropped out just because I was trying to light a fire underneath the incumbent's butt.
10:29And, ironically, the person who took my spot, um, almost won Governor Andrew Gillum of, um, California.
10:36I mean, of Florida.
10:37We were classmates and close friends, still are.
10:39Yeah.
10:40But, I have been very involved here in California.
10:43In the, um, the Senate, the, the, working with local politics and, um, with presidents, former presidents.
10:52I just wanna get involved because, as much as I love having one-on-one connections, I think that's so
10:58important and critical.
10:59I also think it's important to affect legislative change so that way we can really see our kids, our families
11:07thrive in a way that they're not thriving right now.
11:09Yeah, yeah.
11:10Now, um, let's just say, let's dream a little bit.
11:14Let's dream.
11:14We have Karamo on the ticket.
11:15Let's dream.
11:15Who's your running mate?
11:17Um.
11:17Who from the Queer Eye?
11:19Let's put it, let's bring it back here.
11:20Oh, that's easy.
11:21Who?
11:22If I was gonna run for governor.
11:24Yeah.
11:24Of California.
11:26Um, my lieutenant governor would be Jonathan Venice.
11:29Because, he is the only one who is equally as involved with politics as I am.
11:35Like, we are constantly tweeting out.
11:37Like, he's more very far left.
11:40He's like, he's, I'm more so like, let's reach across the aisle, let's talk to different people.
11:45He's more like, forget it.
11:47They don't like you.
11:47I'm not talking to them.
11:48Okay.
11:48And I think you need that sternness, um, alongside with my ability to sort of reach out and talk
11:53to anyone.
11:53Yeah, yeah.
11:54Yeah.
11:55Um.
11:55The other guys I wouldn't.
11:56First of all, two of them are not even American citizens.
11:58So, they're not going.
12:00They're out.
12:01They're out.
12:01Um.
12:02And then Bobby.
12:03I, I, I feel like there would be a scandal that would happen if Bobby got into my, no,
12:07I'm joking, I'm joking.
12:08I'm just joking.
12:09I love my Bobby.
12:10Um, speaking of your Queer Eye castmates.
12:12Anthony was just here.
12:13And he kind of spilled the beans about, um, about your diet.
12:18And so he kind of told me.
12:19You got me gummy bears?
12:20Oh my god!
12:21Oh my god!
12:23How did I not see this?
12:24Oh, my book was hiding it.
12:26It was hiding it.
12:27Oh my god.
12:27This is, these are my favorite treats.
12:29I heard that's your breakfast.
12:30This is my breakfast.
12:32Um, and you would wonder how do I still have a six pack?
12:35I would love to know how people add on.
12:37Genetics.
12:37Because literally, I love gummy bears and soda.
12:41I should have no teeth for how much I eat these.
12:44This is my, oh, sweet Anthony.
12:46This is a sweet thing.
12:48Um, if you could make over any current star and give him the whole Queer Eye treatment,
12:52who would you pick?
12:54Oh, um, I think we all have agreed on our generic answer.
12:59So if you ask these guys that, it'd probably be like Peter Griffin.
13:02Okay.
13:02From Family Guy.
13:03Okay.
13:04Or Homer Simpson, you know.
13:06Yeah.
13:07What happens is that we used to say real celebrities.
13:10Uh-huh.
13:10And now, those people come up to us and like, we love the show.
13:14We love you guys.
13:15And it's kind of hard to be like, you need our help.
13:18Like, you know.
13:19So now we've just kept it to cartoon characters.
13:22Yeah.
13:22Okay.
13:22Okay.
13:22That's fair.
13:23I'm sorry.
13:24I'm eating gummy bears.
13:25It's okay.
13:25Hey.
13:26Well, what are your other favorite treats?
13:29Mmm.
13:31Golden Graham cereal.
13:33Oh.
13:33Love it.
13:34Haven't had that since I was a kid.
13:36Stick with me.
13:37Okay.
13:37Okay.
13:38I bring you back to those childlike moments.
13:39Um.
13:41Starburst.
13:42Uh-huh.
13:43What color of a Starburst though?
13:45Pink.
13:45Pink.
13:46Pink all the way.
13:46Team Pink.
13:47Yes.
13:47I'm a Starburst fanatic.
13:49Um.
13:50I'm allergic to chocolate.
13:51So I don't eat anything chocolate.
13:53Oh.
13:53So that like everything, that's why it's all fruity, fruity, fruity stuff.
13:56Okay.
13:56Yeah.
13:57I'm a chocolate girl.
13:58Really?
13:58Anthony and I talked about this.
14:00We shared that back.
14:01Yeah.
14:02Okay.
14:02So what city would you like to see Queer I Go Next?
14:05Um.
14:06For me, Las Vegas.
14:08Why Las Vegas?
14:10Because most people don't realize that Las Vegas is a red state.
14:13Uh-huh.
14:13And, um, most people think of it as like the party town.
14:16But there's a lot of people there who, um, are suffering, who are under the poverty line,
14:23who could use just five guys to come in and really help them out.
14:26I love Las Vegas.
14:27I love Nevada.
14:28But I think that, um, if we had an opportunity, why not?
14:31Plus, it's also close to home.
14:33Okay.
14:34So, on weekends, I could be in my own bed with my man and my children in the house.
14:39How soon are we getting a season four?
14:41Hopefully soon.
14:42Yeah.
14:43Like.
14:43Has it been shot?
14:44Um, no.
14:45No.
14:46So, we just shot Japan.
14:48Okay.
14:48So we shot like a thing in Japan.
14:50Oh, we're going to talk about this because I heard that the guys gave you false information.
14:54Yes.
14:54Yes.
14:54So I heard there was a big, uh, cameo in season three.
14:59So let me tell you something.
14:59I don't want to call my brothers liars, but they lied to you.
15:01Okay.
15:02Okay.
15:02There is, they said Harry Styles.
15:05No, they didn't tell me Harry Styles.
15:06Okay.
15:06You were assuming.
15:07I was assuming because everything you read on the internet is true.
15:10Yes.
15:10And I saw some Instagram stories.
15:13So Bobby and I hung out with Harry in, um, Japan.
15:16Yeah.
15:16Really phenomenal guy.
15:17I didn't know how phenomenal.
15:20Uh-huh.
15:20Until hanging with him.
15:21Okay.
15:22But there are no big surprises like that in season three.
15:27No big surprise.
15:27No big cameos.
15:28No big cameos.
15:29And I'm sorry that they even pumped you up like that.
15:31That's totally fine.
15:32Yeah.
15:32Give me a dream cameo.
15:33My dream cameo?
15:34Yes.
15:34Oh, um, I told you this already.
15:35It would be President Barack Obama.
15:36So I've worked with him now in the past month and a half twice.
15:39Mm-hm.
15:40And, um, because he's invited me to work with the Obama Foundation and then also My Brother's
