00:00And good evening, I'm Erin Burnett.
00:02Out front tonight, the breaking news,
00:03an exclusive interview tonight with President Trump.
00:06Axios' Mark Caputo just sitting down with the president
00:09in Trump's first interview
00:10since he signed that agreement with Iran
00:13about 24 hours ago.
00:15Here's some of what he said.
00:18What have you learned about
00:20not just the exercise of power,
00:21but the limits on your power
00:22as a result of the conflict?
00:25There are no limits.
00:26No limits?
00:26No, I haven't learned that lesson yet.
00:28I know there are, but, you know,
00:30there are no limits.
00:31We defeated them totally militarily.
00:33I did a naval blockade
00:35where not one ship was able to get through.
00:38Some tried.
00:39They didn't, you know, it didn't last very long.
00:41And it certainly brought Iran to the table
00:44more than before.
00:45However, beginning a conflict,
00:47you had talked about
00:48you only wanted unconditional surrender.
00:51And the MOU doesn't look like unconditional surrender.
00:54Well, it really probably is unconditional surrender.
00:57It is?
00:58I think so.
01:00You heard the incredulity in Mark's voice.
01:03We've got much more of this.
01:03I mean, Mark went on to question the president
01:05about his claims that there's been regime change in Iran.
01:08And Trump responded to him in that case.
01:09He said, I actually think it's regime change
01:12if you want to know the truth.
01:13Now, Caputo responds to Trump,
01:15how is it regime change if you had,
01:18and then Trump jumps in on him and says,
01:20because they're different people.
01:22Caputo responds, but you have Khamenei Jr.
01:23You have still a lot of IRGC officials there,
01:26to which Trump responds, well, they're different people.
01:29All right?
01:30Khamenei Jr. is different from the father.
01:32It's almost like,
01:33it's almost like that's a late night skit.
01:36Okay?
01:36There's a lot more news from this headline-making interview,
01:39and we're going to be talking to Mark Caputo
01:40in just a moment.
01:41We've got more for you.
01:42But you've heard the president
01:43make a number of claims in the interview.
01:45For example, you know,
01:46this whole issue of regime change.
01:47Well, look, Iran's new regime,
01:50you know, when he said there were different people,
01:52yeah, one was the father.
01:53Now it's the son.
01:54Hattab Khamenei is a different person
01:56than his father,
01:57who was killed in the U.S. airstrike,
01:59which began the war.
02:00That may be about where the differences will end.
02:03Just listen to what Kareem Saad-Japur,
02:04our global affairs analyst, told me.
02:08So, Kareem, is this a new regime
02:10that's much more reasonable and less radicalized
02:12than the two prior regimes
02:14over the past four months,
02:16or four weeks, I'm sorry?
02:18That's false, Aaron.
02:19It's the same regime.
02:21It's new personnel.
02:22It's the same ideology.
02:24It's a 56-year-old Ayatollah Khamenei
02:27instead of an 86-year-old Ayatollah Khamenei.
02:29And their fundamental worldview
02:31hasn't shifted one iota.
02:33So I don't think there's any indication
02:34that it's a new group of men
02:36with a different ideology.
02:39That sort of just makes the whole point.
02:42And as for Trump's claim
02:43that the U.S. totally defeated Iran militarily,
02:45he has said this, frankly, many times,
02:48even during the war itself.
02:50But as we have said,
02:51when you look at the facts,
02:52the reality is that that is not true.
02:55Iran's nuclear material, of course,
02:57is still there.
02:58And we know from Seth Jones
03:00and the Center for Strategic
03:01and International Studies
03:02that Iran still has about 70%
03:05of its pre-war missile stockpile
03:07and 70% of its launchers.
03:10Out front now, Mark Caputo,
03:12the White House reporter for Axios,
03:13who sat down exclusively with President Trump
03:15and shared that clip first with Out Front.
03:18I mean, Mark,
03:19it's really an extraordinary conversation
03:21that you just had.
03:22I just want to emphasize,
03:23this is the first time Trump has spoken
03:25since signing the agreement with Iran,
03:27right, the memorandum of understanding.
03:30He certainly comes off as defiant
03:32and defensive in the conversation with you.
03:35He's proud.
03:36He thinks the deal,
03:37or he's projecting that the deal
03:39that he has agreed to
03:40or the memo that he signed
03:42is great because of the stock market
03:44and oil prices.
03:45That's what he's really fixated on.
03:48So let me play again
03:49a little bit more here
03:50of where you were pressing him, Mark,
03:53on the agreement with Iran
03:54that he just signed.
03:55Here it is.
03:57What have you learned about
03:59not just the exercise of power,
04:00but the limits on your power
04:02as a result of the conflict?
04:04There are no limits.
04:05No limits?
04:05No, not,
04:06I haven't learned that lesson yet.
04:07I know there are,
04:08but you know,
04:09there are no limits.
04:10We defeated them totally militarily.
04:13Beginning a conflict,
04:13you had talked about
04:15you only wanted unconditional surrender.
04:18And the MOU doesn't look like
04:20unconditional surrender.
04:21Well, it really probably
04:23is unconditional surrender.
04:24It is?
04:24I think so.
04:28It is,
04:29which is the incredulity
04:30in your voice, Mark.
04:32I mean, you know,
04:33we just a moment ago
04:34laid out the fact that,
04:35you know,
04:36saying that they have no military
04:37is just not true.
04:39And as you point out,
04:41maybe with your incredulity,
04:43$300 billion of a reconstruction fund
04:45unfreezing of assets
04:46of $100 billion,
04:50the U.S. agreeing
04:51that it's going to withdraw
04:53or somehow do something
04:54that's unclear to its forces
04:55in proximity to Iran
04:56and the region,
04:57those things are not
04:58unconditional surrender.
04:59I guess the question for you
05:00is you're sitting there
05:01face to face with him.
05:02Do you think
05:02that he really believes
05:04what he's saying to you?
05:05That's one of those
05:06enduring questions about Trump
05:07is that when he says
05:09what he says he believes,
05:11does he really believe it?
05:12the reality is
05:13is he stayed relentlessly
05:15on message with this.
05:16His view is
05:17is that their military
05:18has been crushed
05:19and let's give him that
05:21is that by and large,
05:23it's true.
05:24I mean, the Navy
05:25has been seriously damaged,
05:27their missile capacity
05:27and the like.
05:28Yes, there are some reports
05:29indicating it's not
05:30as destroyed
05:31as Trump says it is,
05:32but Iran really took a whipping
05:35from the United States.
05:37However, the reality is,
05:38as a lot of experts
05:39predicted at the time,
05:41the Iranians are tough
05:43and they're resilient
05:44and they had war games for this
05:45and they were able
05:46to take the whipping
05:47and still survive
05:48and were in no mood
05:50and were unlikely
05:51to unconditionally surrender
05:53and those folks were right.
05:55The Iranians
05:56have not surrendered unconditionally.
05:58And what about
05:59the whole thing
05:59on regime change
06:00when he was looking you
06:01straight in the face
06:02and saying it's regime change
06:03because it's a different person?
06:05Yeah, that's why I said,
06:07well, are you sure about that?
06:08You know, you have Khamenei Jr.,
06:10Khamenei Jr.,
06:11you have IRGC officials.
06:13You say, well,
06:14they're different people.
06:15Okay.
06:16But the reality is
06:18the Iranian military
06:19and the IRGC structure,
06:21their government structure,
06:22had anticipated one day
06:24the United States
06:25and Israel
06:26or its enemies
06:27would launch
06:28a decapitation strike
06:29and as a result,
06:30they came up with
06:31something called
06:31the Mosaic Doctrine,
06:33which essentially said
06:34that there would be
06:35a mosaic,
06:36a different patchwork
06:37of different leaders
06:38who could step in
06:39when other leaders
06:40were killed
06:40and that's what happened.
06:42Yeah, it's just,
06:43I find it interesting
06:43as you say that
06:44the question is
06:45does he really believe
06:46what he's saying?
06:47But that your takeaway
06:48from talking to him
06:49was that he was remarkably
06:50on,
06:51that he stayed consistent
06:52with what he was saying to you.
06:54I mean,
06:55he only had two hours of sleep.
06:57He flew in from...
06:58He does sound like
06:59he's got a cold or something.
07:00He did sound a little...
07:02But he was,
07:03in the interview,
07:03he was,
07:04he did have
07:06a lower energy level
07:07than he normally does,
07:08but his overall presentation
07:09was pretty positive
07:11and he just loves
07:14the idea
07:15that gas prices
07:16are coming down,
07:16oil prices are coming down,
07:17and the stock market
07:18is going up.
07:19That's what he's
07:19really fixated on.
07:20And that's sort of
07:21the sub-headline
07:22of this entire thing
07:23is that Trump
07:24had had enough
07:24of this war,
07:25he'd had enough
07:26of people talking
07:27about high fuel prices,
07:29and he wanted it to end.
07:30And this is the way
07:31he brought about an end.
07:33Yeah, it's fascinating.
07:34And it does raise
07:35so many questions
07:36given what he said to you
07:37about, you know,
07:37is this what really
07:38people around him
07:39are telling him?
07:39Is this the bubble
07:40that he's in or not?
07:42You also asked him
07:43about Netanyahu,
07:43and obviously
07:45that was at the core,
07:47their relationship
07:47was at the core
07:48of this war
07:48to begin with,
07:49and now it's,
07:51the fraying
07:52of that relationship
07:53is core to how
07:54this war is ending,
07:56or at least
07:56how this agreement
07:58has proceeded.
07:59What did he say
07:59about Netanyahu?
08:01He said,
08:01I asked him about
08:03the relationship
08:03with Netanyahu.
08:04He said,
08:04Bibi's fine,
08:05the relationship's fine.
08:06He said,
08:07but we need to keep him sane.
08:09He used that word sane.
08:10The implication is
08:11that Netanyahu
08:13had gone a little nuts.
08:14And I asked him,
08:15how are you going
08:16to keep Israel
08:17from attacking Lebanon?
08:19And the subtext
08:20of that was,
08:21and sort of messing up
08:24this deal with Iran,
08:25something that Trump
08:26had lost his temper
08:27with Netanyahu
08:28over a few days
08:30or a few weeks ago,
08:31I've lost track of time.
08:32And Trump just said,
08:34they'll do what I say,
08:36that Israel loves me
08:38and what I tell them
08:39to do,
08:40they will do.
08:40So we're going to see
08:41if that sticks.
08:43Well,
08:44right,
08:44we'll see if that does stick.
08:45All right,
08:46Mark,
08:46thank you very much.
08:47And everyone,
08:47be sure to check out
08:48Mark's full interview,
08:49just shared with us
08:50those exclusive excerpts,
08:51but the full interview
08:52with President Trump
08:53releases tomorrow morning
08:54on Axios,
08:56and we will all see it there.
08:58Mark Caputo,
08:58thank you very much.
