00:00Vielen Dank.
00:01Good evening and welcome back to The Weekend Prime Time.
00:04I'm Elyse Jordan along with Catherine Rempel and Eamon Moyhadeen.
00:08Antonia Hilton is own assignment.
00:10We begin with today's major diplomatic showdown in Switzerland
00:13where President Trump's envoys are expecting to continue negotiations
00:17into the night even as the president's rhetoric threatened to derail those efforts.
00:23Earlier, Vice President J.D. Vance met with negotiators from Iran
00:26alongside mediators from Qatar and Pakistan.
00:30Vance was joined by Special Envoy Steve Witkoff
00:32and the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
00:35Today's initial talks reportedly grew strained with the Iranian delegation
00:39threatening to walk away from the negotiations.
00:42But a senior U.S. diplomat engaged in the negotiations tells MSNOW,
00:47quote, contrary to rampant false reporting,
00:50the Iranians are still here and discussions are ongoing.
00:53A major reason for Iran's reported frustration
00:56stems from President Trump's barrage of threats amid the negotiations.
01:00First posting on True Social this morning, quote,
01:03Iran must immediately stop their highly paid proxies in Lebanon
01:07from causing trouble.
01:09If they don't, we'll hit Iran very hard again,
01:11just like we did last week, only harder.
01:14He then told Fox News that he told the Iranians
01:16that they would not have a country if they closed the strait.
01:20Quote, you won't even make it back to your effing country.
01:23He also said, quote,
01:25we may take over the strait if we have to.
01:28I'll blow the bleep out of them.
01:30If they don't make a deal, we'll collect tolls.
01:33Joining us now, Massachusetts Congressman Seth Moulton.
01:36He's a Marine Corps combat veteran
01:38who serves on the House Armed Services Committee.
01:40He's also running for the U.S. Senate.
01:42So, Congressman,
01:43when the president is publicly threatening Iran,
01:47when his own negotiators are sitting across the table
01:50trying to reach a deal,
01:52what do you make of the odds
01:54that there will be a lasting and firm deal?
01:58I mean, it's not looking good,
02:00but it hasn't looked good for a while.
02:03And what Trump is also doing
02:04is humiliating the United States.
02:07I mean, this is a total embarrassment.
02:08He has absolutely lost this war.
02:11If you just do a quick comparison
02:13between the deal that's even just being discussed
02:16and not finalized, to your point,
02:18far from being finalized,
02:20but even just the terms of the deal being discussed,
02:23it's a thousand times worse
02:25than the deal that President Obama handed him
02:27at the beginning of his first administration.
02:30Let me play for you some sound
02:33from Senator Cory Booker this morning on Meet the Press
02:35when asked if he thinks Israel is a reliable partner
02:37in the peace negotiations.
02:39Take a listen.
02:42Between Israel and America,
02:43we have two criminal presidents,
02:45ours who's been indicted over,
02:47excuse me, convicted over 30 times
02:49for criminal convictions,
02:50and theirs who's embroiled in his own corruption,
02:53his own trials.
02:54These are two failed world leaders.
02:56And yes, we should be very worried
02:58about both of these leaders
03:00continuing to upend
03:02any kind of viable pathway to peace
03:04in the Middle East.
03:05These are both failed leaders
03:06that I cannot wait
03:07until they're off the world stage.
03:10I've been making the point, Congressman,
03:12that there are almost two sets of negotiations
03:14taking place here,
03:15the one between America and Iran,
03:17but also between America and Israel
03:19about America and Israel
03:21and certainly what Israel is doing in Lebanon.
03:23Give me your read on that dynamic
03:24between America and Israel
03:25and how you see that
03:26either complicating matters or not.
03:29Well, look, I mean,
03:30Senator Booker is right.
03:31I was one of the first members of Congress
03:33to call on Netanyahu to resign.
03:36He's under criminal investigation.
03:37He seems to be hanging on to the presidency
03:40by conducting a lot of wars,
03:42sound familiar,
03:43in order to stay out of that investigation,
03:46or the prime, I should say,
03:47is staying on as prime minister.
03:49And look, it's, I mean, look,
03:51when the secretary of state,
03:52when a Republican secretary of state says,
03:55oh, well, wait a minute,
03:56we didn't really want to go to war.
03:57Israel just pushed us into it.
03:59I mean, that's a real problem.
04:01You know, America should be calling the shots here.
04:03We should be acting in the interest
04:04of our national security first and foremost.
04:08That doesn't mean we abandon our allies,
04:10but it means we make decisions ourselves.
04:13And it does not seem like Netanyahu
04:15is acting in the national security interests
04:17of the United States,
04:18nor, frankly, in my humble opinion,
04:20is he acting in the long-term
04:21national security interests of Israel.
04:24Congressman, while Trump was at the G7 last week,
04:27he was asked about the deadly U.S.,
04:29apparent U.S. strike on that Iranian school,
04:32a girl's school early in the war
04:35that killed many children.
04:36Let's take a listen to what he said.
04:40Can you now say whether you will hold anyone
04:43in your administration accountable
04:44for the strike on a school
04:46that killed more than 100 children
04:48on the first day of the war?
04:49No, if it was a fault,
04:52and as you know, that's under investigation.
04:55It's such a strange question to be asked at this state.
04:58It's talking about a long time ago,
05:00but nobody did that on purpose.
05:02The stakes are made.
05:03The war is nasty.
05:05But I know it's under investigation,
05:07and I could have a report for you tomorrow,
05:09or I'd ask—I would ask Pete—
05:11I would ask Pete Hexeth that question.
05:17I mean, just the utter—
05:20I don't even know what to ask.
05:30I mean, the guy has no accountability for his own behavior.
05:31And that starts with Donald Trump at the top,
05:34but it certainly continues with Pete Hexeth.
05:36We've asked him this question on the Armed Services Committee.
05:39I mean, the guy has no accountability for his own behavior.
05:42I mean, let's not forget that he came into office
05:44and promptly, you know, was involved in Signalgate,
05:48sharing classified information with reporters,
05:51something that would get any private in the military
05:54under his command thrown in prison,
05:56and Hexeth is still the Secretary of Defense.
05:59Well, but when it comes to this particular investigation,
06:03is there anything that Congress can do
06:05to ensure that there is accountability?
06:08Well, I mean, what we should be doing
06:10is putting provisions in the defense bill
06:12to force accountability from the administration.
06:15There is some talk about that happening
06:17in the Senate right now.
06:20We'll see when the final bill comes up for a vote.
06:23But that's the kind of thing that we should be doing.
06:25We should be holding Hexeth accountable.
06:27One of the things we sometimes try to do
06:29is restrict the funding that he can use personally
06:32as a secretary of defense
06:33until he produces these reports.
06:36I mean, this is just basic part and parcel doing the job.
06:39And the reality is that Hexeth is so insecure,
06:42he's so unpopular with the troops,
06:45with the admirals, with the generals.
06:47Morale in the Pentagon is so pathetically low
06:49that he just doesn't want to accept responsibility
06:52for anything other than putting memes on TV.
06:57Congressman, about Secretary Hexeth's travel funds,
07:01have you and your colleagues
07:03who do want accountability from Hexeth,
07:06what's the status of the funds?
07:08Have they been blocked or stopped in any form?
07:12I mean, not yet.
07:13But all of this is in negotiation right now,
07:15and it ends up what the vote is,
07:17you know, for the final vote on the bill
07:20and what comes before the House and the Senate
07:22to pass into law.
07:24But make no mistake,
07:25I mean, the Republicans don't like this guy either.
07:29You know, the only,
07:30I think the only job in Washington
07:32more unpopular than mucking out the reflecting pool
07:36after Trump's renovation
07:37is defending Pete Hexeth.
07:40Democrats think he's a total joke
07:42and a danger to our national security,
07:44and Republicans privately do too.
07:47I remember after the debating the bill all night
07:50in the Armed Services Committee a few weeks ago,
07:53a Republican came up to me the next morning
07:55and said, you know,
07:56I had a talk with Pete Hexeth,
07:58and this guy, he, I gotta tell you, Seth,
08:00he really is just a total,
08:02and then he launched into a string of profanities,
08:06and I looked at him like bewildered,
08:08as if, like,
08:10it really took you this long to realize?
08:12But the point is,
08:13Republicans know this too.
08:16He's a danger to our national security
08:18at the top of the Pentagon,
08:19and he, we gotta do everything we can
08:23to get rid of him.
08:24Let me get your thoughts, if I can,
08:26Congressman,
08:26about our relationship with our allies.
08:28You had J.D. Vance,
08:29who was to some extent
08:30extending a bit of an olive branch around NATO,
08:33but at the same time,
08:33Pete Hexeth,
08:34who was last week blasting
08:36our NATO allies in a meeting in Brussels.
08:39He's consistently berated them
08:41and for resisting American jets
08:44and all kinds of other asks that America has.
08:47I'm sure a lot of this comes across your desk,
08:49and certainly in the committee,
08:50what are you hearing from our allies
08:51about the American relationship
08:54with our transatlantic partners,
08:56particularly?
08:57That they fundamentally can't trust us.
08:59That they just fundamentally can't trust us.
09:01And for years, we've tried to say,
09:04don't listen to these guys.
09:05They're an aberration.
09:06It was interesting serving
09:08on the Armed Services Committee
09:10in the first Trump administration
09:11because when Republicans were in charge,
09:13they would lead delegations overseas
09:15where we would sit down
09:16and meet with our allies.
09:18And the Republican leadership
09:19of those House and Senate delegations
09:22would start by saying,
09:23look, the guy in the White House is crazy,
09:26but here are Republicans and Democrats
09:28from Congress,
09:29a co-equal branch of government,
09:31saying the same thing we've said for years.
09:33So you can trust us.
09:34You can trust the U.S. government
09:36in the long term.
09:38This administration is just an aberration.
09:40That was coming from Republicans.
09:41But now, of course,
09:42none of us can say that
09:44in a second term of Trump
09:45and be believed by our allies.
09:47They really think
09:48that this seems to be
09:49just what Americans want.
09:51It's this utter chaos,
09:54unpredictability,
09:54and just lies, lies, lies
09:56from the people
09:57at the top of the administration.
09:59And, you know,
10:00the first thing you learn
10:01when you actually serve
10:02in the military,
10:03something Trump, of course,
10:04never did,
10:05is that you have to be trustworthy.
10:08I remember showing up
10:10at Marine Corps training
10:11at, like, boot camp,
10:12and you learn pretty quickly
10:14that you can drop out of a run
10:15and they'll probably let you
10:16try again the next day.
10:18You can fail a test
10:19and they'll probably let you
10:20retake that test.
10:21But you lie about anything,
10:23you're gone.
10:24Because you need to be trusted.
10:26That's what we expect
10:26of our allies,
10:28and it's no longer
10:29what they can expect of us.
10:32Congressman Seth Moulton,
10:33always appreciate you joining us.
10:34Thank you so much
10:35for making time for us this evening.
10:36Good to see you.
10:38Next up, our friend
10:39and colleague Eugene Daniels
10:41joins us on set
10:42to talk about his exclusive interview
10:43with James Tallarico
10:44and the fight to upend
10:46long-standing GOP rule in Texas.
10:48That and much more.
10:49You're watching
10:49The Weeknd Primetime on MSNOW.
10:57Once again, Democrats believe
10:59they have a real chance
11:00to upend decades
11:01of Republican rule in Texas,
11:02and this time,
11:03they are pinning their hopes
11:04on state Representative
11:05James Tallarico
11:06as their nominee
11:07for U.S. Senate.
11:08Tallarico is taking on
11:10Republican Attorney General
11:11Kent Paxton,
11:11whose political career
11:12has been marked
11:13by years of investigations,
11:15legal battles,
11:16and even impeachment proceedings.
11:18Our colleague Eugene Daniels
11:20traveled to Fort Worth, Texas
11:21last week
11:22for an exclusive interview
11:23with Tallarico,
11:23and here's a part
11:24of their wide-ranging conversation.
11:26Take a listen.
11:28Does it help or hurt you
11:30that the president
11:30is this personally invested
11:32in attacking
11:33and trying to beat you?
11:35I honestly get the sense
11:37that people across the spectrum,
11:38across the state,
11:39are tired of this politics
11:43as professional wrestling,
11:44right?
11:45You got these old guys
11:47lathered up in their fake tan,
11:49throwing corny nicknames
11:50at each other.
11:52Joining us now
11:53to discuss this and more,
11:55our good friend
11:55and colleague Eugene Daniels,
11:57MSNOW senior Washington correspondent
11:58and co-host
11:59of The Weekend on MSNOW.
12:01Really appreciate you
12:02doing double duty.
12:03I know it's a long day for you.
12:04Great to have you here on set.
12:05It's a happy to be here
12:05with you guys.
12:06So, listen,
12:07tell me a little bit about,
12:08like, what your takeaway
12:09from this interview was
12:10and why Democrats feel
12:12this time around
12:13will actually,
12:14that James Tallarico
12:15will be the one
12:15to get him across
12:16the finish line.
12:17There's a couple of reasons, right?
12:18One, I think all of us,
12:19I went to high school
12:21in Texas,
12:21so I'm like,
12:22okay, it's Texas.
12:23So even when I went down there,
12:24I was a little bit more jaded
12:26than I think I left.
12:27One, the Trump factor, right,
12:29that is playing
12:30in all of these races
12:31around the country.
12:32Not just folks
12:33who are tired
12:33of the politics
12:34as wrestling,
12:36but more so people
12:37are seeing a lot of money
12:38leave their wallets
12:39and they're not coming back.
12:40A lot of promises
12:41being made,
12:41a lot of promises
12:42not being kept,
12:43so that's one.
12:43Two, Ken Paxton
12:44does have a lot of baggage.
12:47People have been okay
12:48with it in the past,
12:49but people are okay
12:49with,
12:51bad thing,
12:52you're doing bad things
12:53as long as they have money
12:53in their pockets, right?
12:54That goes back
12:55to that economy aspect of it.
12:57And three,
12:57Tallarico's an interesting candidate.
12:59His polling,
12:59he's been ahead
13:00of Paxton quite a bit.
13:02That was not the case
13:03with Better Old Work,
13:04so that's another aspect of this.
13:05And frankly,
13:06the different demographics
13:08that are changing over there.
13:10There are a lot
13:10of young people.
13:11I went to a Juneteenth
13:13walk with him
13:13and we're working
13:15on a black voter series,
13:16so that was a part of that.
13:17And I'm walking with him
13:19and I'm shocked
13:20by how excited
13:21people were to see him,
13:22like old black ladies
13:24running up
13:24and just hugging him,
13:25which was something
13:26I was not anticipating.
13:27So there's something happening.
13:29Is it enough
13:29to flip Texas?
13:30is a big question.
13:32What do you make
13:32of the fact
13:33that a lot of the Republican
13:34attacks on Tallarico
13:36have been about his masculinity?
13:38And, you know,
13:38oftentimes in sort of homophobic
13:40or transphobic terms.
13:42Why is that where they are going?
13:44And do you think
13:45that that actually
13:46has purchased in Texas?
13:47I think it does.
13:48One, I asked him about this.
13:50Asked him, you know,
13:51Paxton started calling you
13:52low-T Tallarico.
13:53And he kind of made a joke.
13:54He's a little shady.
13:55He made a joke that,
13:57you know, he's 36
13:58so he doesn't have to worry
13:58about having low-T.
14:00So that's one.
14:01So that's a little shady to Paxton.
14:02But then he went
14:03and talked about
14:04what being a man actually is.
14:05He talked about the man
14:06who adopted him
14:07and gave him his last name
14:08and that he used to go
14:10and cut their grass on Saturday
14:11and then go to their neighbors
14:13who was an elderly woman
14:14and that he would cut
14:15her grass always.
14:16No questions asked.
14:17Rain or shine.
14:18So he goes into this
14:19kind of talking about
14:20what it actually means
14:21to be a man.
14:22That there's a time
14:23where young men
14:24could be taught that
14:24and it could be different.
14:25I personally think
14:27it is Republicans
14:28trying to cleave off
14:30black men
14:31and Latino men
14:31because a lot of that
14:33is that there's an aspect
14:34of what it is to be a man
14:35is to be tough.
14:36We know this, right?
14:36Like black and brown men
14:38you have to be tough
14:39and I think that's
14:40an aspect of it.
14:41There's also like
14:42so much homophobia
14:43in the country
14:44and I think they're hoping
14:45that there's enough in Texas
14:46to keep those folks
14:47away from him
14:48but you know
14:49he's not vegan.
14:50I ain't seen meat
14:51no meat
14:51but he's not vegan
14:52and he you know
14:53we talked about
14:54his girlfriend
14:56quite a bit
14:56so like these aspects
14:58of it aren't true
14:59but those
14:59there is a purchase there.
15:01You're right.
15:01How much of an issue
15:02do you see religion
15:04being in this race
15:06because James Tallarico
15:08is a very progressive Christian
15:10and is that going
15:11to resonate
15:12with the Texan
15:14evangelicals
15:14that he needs
15:15to win over
15:16or will it be an issue
15:18similar to what
15:19Mitt Romney had
15:20with his Mormonism
15:21where some conservative
15:23evangelical Republicans
15:24they did not find that
15:26to be an authentic Christian
15:28and stuck Republican.
15:29Right.
15:30They look at it
15:30with a little bit of side eye.
15:31No you're right.
15:32He he leads
15:33with the Christianity
15:34which I think is interesting.
15:35Democrats don't really do that
15:36and him
15:37Raphael Warnock
15:38Senator out of Georgia
15:39are two that are doing it
15:40in really interesting ways.
15:41I do think
15:43that the
15:45depending on the crowd
15:46right
15:46if you're talking about
15:48what it means to be a Christian
15:49and loving your neighbor
15:50and leading with that
15:51I think it works
15:52with a lot of people
15:53and kind of crosses
15:55and when you deal
15:55with all the other issues
15:56that we were talking about
15:57in that first question
15:58from Aiman
15:59you kind of might
16:00get into people
16:01people might ignore
16:02some of it
16:03at the end of the day
16:03because he's
16:04you know kind of your
16:06I guess average Christian
16:07right like he's not a Mormon
16:08he's like that is the religion
16:10that he he practices
16:11and talks about a lot
16:12and he kind of talks
16:14in that exact same way
16:15he's very someone
16:16I was talking to some
16:18young black women voters
16:19there and they said
16:20he gives young white
16:21youth pastor
16:22and I think that may work
16:24with a lot of people
16:25in Texas.
16:25Well speaking of
16:26black women voters
16:27the Jasmine Crockett factor
16:29what do you make
16:31of the congresswoman's
16:32non-endorsement
16:34to date
16:35and does it matter
16:36does it have an impact?
16:37Yeah so that's a part
16:38of the series
16:39so I'll give you a sneak
16:39peek on for the weekend
16:40prime time
16:43he seems to be
16:45very clear eyed
16:46to me that it's not coming
16:48that she's not going
16:49to get out with him
16:49he's not
16:50because when I asked him
16:51about her
16:52what he kept saying
16:52is like it's me
16:53it's on me the candidate
16:54to make sure that people
16:56vote for me
16:56it's bigger than me
16:58and Jasmine
16:58it's bigger than me
16:59it's bigger than Jasmine
17:00I thought that was
17:00really interesting
17:01that to me reads
17:02as a politician
17:03who's been spending time
17:04with his aides
17:05and saying
17:05how do we make sure
17:06we don't attack her
17:07for not coming out
17:08with us
17:09but also make clear
17:10that maybe it's
17:10never happening
17:11so that's what I heard
17:12he also told me
17:13that he called her
17:14I think a few weeks ago
17:15she didn't answer
17:16and he left a message
17:17so I think that tells you
17:18quite a bit about
17:19where that relationship
17:20is going
17:21I think she left
17:21or I think she gave
17:22a quote to the Texas Tribune
17:24or some other publication
17:25saying she hasn't even
17:27listened to the message
17:27yeah
17:27and it's
17:28I mean it's really surprising
17:30for a lot of people
17:30but I did
17:31those same young black women
17:32voters said
17:33black women
17:34Jasmine Crockett
17:35does not owe him
17:36her labor
17:37I do think
17:38he is going to need her
17:40to get black voters
17:41excited in Texas
17:42I do think
17:42that needs to happen
17:44how that happens
17:45I don't know
17:45but that's going to be
17:46on Tallarico
17:47so we've got about
17:48a minute left
17:48but let me get your thoughts
17:49you obviously spoke
17:50to Tallarico voters
17:52what did you hear
17:53from Texas voters
17:54about what is happening
17:57in this race
17:58and how are they feeling
17:59they're excited
18:00you know what I mean
18:01like excited
18:02enthusiasm is
18:03enthusiasm is high
18:04and I think enthusiasm
18:06and also frustration
18:07and anger
18:08and you know
18:09all three of those
18:10you work in politics
18:10all three of those
18:11are things that you can use
18:12to get people to the ballot
18:15and to punch the ticket for you
18:16so I do think
18:17there's something there
18:18again
18:18there's a lot of money
18:19that is going to have
18:20to be spent
18:20Texas is a humongous state
18:22to try to get around
18:22to all of those people
18:23and he has to figure out
18:24how to bring that
18:25Democratic primary coalition
18:26back together
18:27if he's going to win here
18:28Eugene stick with us
18:30up next
18:30the literal cover-up
18:32still happening
18:33at the Kennedy Center
18:34you're watching
18:35the week in primetime
18:35on MSNOW
18:43the Trump administration
18:44is being accused
18:46of engaging
18:46in a cover-up
18:48at the Kennedy Center
18:49literally
18:50days after a judge
18:52ordered President Trump's
18:53name removed
18:53from the building
18:54last week
18:55a curtain remains
18:56there right now
18:57fueling questions
18:58about what exactly
18:59the public
19:00isn't being allowed
19:01to see
19:01Kennedy Center officials
19:02insist
19:03there is nothing
19:04unusual going on
19:05telling the New York Times
19:06quote
19:06the scaffolding
19:07and tarp
19:07will remain up
19:08as crews address
19:09maintenance needs
19:10of the marble
19:11and soffit panels
19:12so
19:13Eugene
19:14do you think
19:16this is really about
19:17you know
19:17construction safety
19:19the thing that's
19:20so interesting
19:20is there's so many
19:21like so much resources
19:23money
19:23human
19:24and otherwise
19:25to make sure
19:26that Donald Trump
19:26doesn't feel bad
19:27right
19:28like there's this
19:29there's the
19:30the reflecting pool
19:31all of those things
19:32how much time
19:33his aides
19:34his allies
19:35Republicans in general
19:36people that work
19:37for the federal government
19:38have to like
19:38work to make sure
19:39that he doesn't feel badly
19:41and I think that is something
19:42that is like
19:42really interesting
19:43and very Trumpian
19:44about how we live
19:46in our lives right now
19:47supposed to be focused
19:48on the people's work
19:49and they're focused on
19:50like
19:51well he's obsessed
19:51with image
19:52and he has very thin skin
19:54so the idea
19:54of him
19:55spending all of
19:57these resources
19:58to put his name
19:59on everything
19:59whether it's airports
20:00an ARC
20:01a performing arts center
20:03he'll
20:04he'll put the effort
20:05and energy into that
20:05but to see it being
20:07taken down
20:07that's going to make
20:08Trump really sad
20:09it's got to hurt
20:10I mean it hurt me too
20:11frankly
20:11you know
20:11you put your name
20:12on someone
20:13somebody takes it off
20:14in the middle of the night
20:15exactly
20:16exactly
20:17exactly
20:17and part of it is
20:18and I've talked to a lot
20:19of Republicans about this
20:20is that
20:21and Jonathan Capehart
20:22talks about this
20:22almost literally
20:23every weekend
20:23on our show
20:24is that
20:25I think Donald Trump
20:26is aware
20:27that history
20:28will look at him
20:29in a much more
20:29complicated way
20:30than he would like
20:31complicated
20:32I think that's
20:32I'm trying to be nice
20:33I'm trying to be nice
20:34very nice
20:35how y'all
20:36how y'all
20:37act on y'all show
20:37you've been there
20:38you've seen this
20:39giant sheet
20:40covering
20:42whatever's happening
20:43in the lettering
20:44and you've also seen
20:45the reflecting pool
20:46what was your impression
20:48of the reflecting pool
20:49and the shade
20:50and the algae
20:52it's just
20:52it's like a waste of money
20:54it was $14 million
20:56to get us right
20:57where we were always
20:58which is the algae
20:59is always going to come back
21:00you should see what they did
21:01in the Iran world
21:01exactly
21:02exactly
21:02they spent billions of dollars
21:04to get us right back
21:05to where we were on
21:06February 27th
21:06that's so much of what
21:08Trump is right
21:08it's like
21:09so much of it is image
21:10and frankly
21:11when you talk to folks
21:12who are experts
21:13on backsliding democracies
21:15or authoritarianism
21:16they will tell you
21:17that authoritarians
21:19are obsessed
21:19with the veneer
21:20of success
21:21what's going on
21:22behind closed doors
21:23almost doesn't matter
21:24what's happening
21:25to the people
21:25and how they're hurting
21:26sometimes doesn't matter
21:27what matters
21:28is that it looks
21:29shiny and new
21:30right
21:30and so Trump's
21:31obsession with this
21:31I think is very
21:32very interesting
21:33and seems to be
21:34in line with that
21:34as well
21:34I also wonder
21:35what kind of drag
21:36it has
21:37not only on the
21:38federal government
21:38like you were talking
21:39about the resources
21:40that go into protecting
21:41Trump's very delicate
21:43feelings within the
21:44federal government
21:44but it's also happening
21:45in the private sector
21:46right
21:46you see the CEOs
21:48coming on bended knee
21:50to Donald Trump
21:51with gold statues
21:54and you have
21:55fake awards
21:55fake awards
21:56and things like that
21:57which is silly
21:59but it's also a huge
22:01drain on the private sector
22:02right
22:02because these are CEOs
22:04Tim Cook is supposed
22:05to be thinking about
22:05the next iPhone
22:07he's not supposed
22:08to be thinking about
22:08like how should we
22:09design this beautiful
22:10glass and gold trophy
22:13that we should hand over
22:13to Donald Trump
22:14this is why
22:16in countries
22:17that have authoritarianism
22:18they have worse
22:19economic outcomes
22:19because it's just
22:20such a drag
22:21on all economic activity
22:23companies are spending
22:25their time
22:25CEOs are spending
22:26their time
22:27thinking about
22:27how to appease
22:29the president
22:30or whoever
22:31the authoritarian leader
22:32is rather than
22:33like build new products
22:34they're not getting
22:35anything out of this
22:36speaking to your point
22:37let me play for you
22:37this Fox from
22:38Fox News
22:39Tommy Lahren
22:40about the algae
22:41in the pool
22:42watch
22:45I'm not a scientist
22:46so the algae thing
22:47I mean I believe
22:48that's what happens
22:49in bodies of water
22:50such as this
22:51so I don't think
22:52this is President Trump's
22:53fault
22:53but what's so irritating
22:54to me about the left
22:55here
22:55President Trump
22:56is trying to make
22:57D.C. nicer
22:58he's trying to spruce up
22:59the place
22:59and they go out of
23:00their way
23:01to damage
23:02and to vandalize
23:03it
23:03it's like during
23:03the BLM Summer of Love
23:05when they're burning
23:05down businesses
23:06in their own community
23:08that is some
23:09North Korean level
23:10state propaganda
23:11right there
23:12North Korea
23:12would be very jealous
23:13of Tommy Lahren there
23:14and like what she was
23:15what she's saying
23:16like poor Donald Trump
23:17it's like
23:18first of all
23:18it was a problem
23:19that didn't need to be
23:19fixed
23:20and if you are going to
23:21fix it
23:22your buddy down in
23:23Florida
23:23is probably not the best
23:25guy to have it fixed
23:26and you probably didn't
23:27need $14 million
23:28your buddy down in Florida
23:29whose company is called
23:31Greenwater
23:31is he going to be able
23:33to have any good outcome
23:35before July 4th
23:37and the next round
23:38of all of these
23:39celebrations
23:40hits D.C.
23:41yeah
23:42and the thing I think
23:43that's really interesting
23:43is now they are
23:44not just going after
23:46people who maybe
23:46touched it a little bit
23:47right
23:48John Carl
23:48but also talking about it
23:52as if we
23:53the media
23:53and the Democrats
23:55made this
23:55yeah
23:56it's like no
23:56your boss is obsessed
23:58with this
23:58we're not obsessed
23:59we don't care about the pool
24:00he talks about it
24:01he literally held up a poster
24:02comparing the length
24:04of the pool
24:04to like iconic buildings
24:06around the world
24:07and he's the one
24:08and think about it
24:09it would be so easy
24:10for someone just to take
24:11like food coloring
24:12and just make it like
24:13purple by tomorrow
24:14like it would not be hard
24:15for like pool terrorism
24:16to happen
24:17don't give those
24:18it could have been
24:19sabotaged
24:20this was all his own doing
24:21he'll be knocking
24:21on your door
24:22very soon
24:23it's great to see you
24:24really nice having you
24:25here on set
24:26really appreciate it
24:27good to see you buddy
24:27next up
24:29a nightmare scenario
24:30for one DACA recipient
24:31and new dad
24:32he's going to tell us
24:33about the irreplaceable
24:34moment the administration
24:35denied him
24:36you're watching
24:37The Weeknd Prime Time
24:37on MSNOW
24:47in tonight's
24:48primetime focus
24:49as millions of families
24:50celebrate Father's Day
24:51today
24:51others spent it
24:52completely fractured
24:53separated
24:54due to the Trump
24:55administration's
24:56mass deportation agenda
24:57this is 30 year old
24:59Jose Contreras
25:00a DACA recipient
25:01who was detained
25:02and deported to Honduras
25:03after receiving a letter
25:04instructing him to report
25:05to immigration authorities
25:07he was eventually
25:08returned to the United States
25:09held in a detention
25:10facility
25:11and then released
25:12last month
25:12but by then
25:14the moment that he had
25:15waited for was gone
25:16while detained
25:17he missed the birth
25:18of his son Mateo
25:19who is now nearly
25:20four months old
25:21and Jose's story
25:22is not unique
25:23you'll remember
25:24Mahmoud Khalil
25:25the pro-Palestinian
25:26activist
25:26who missed the birth
25:27of his first son
25:28while he was in detention
25:29even after pleading
25:30with immigration officials
25:31for a temporary release
25:33to be there at the birth
25:34and then there's
25:35Meher Tarabishi
25:36whose disabled son
25:37died
25:37while he remained
25:39in ICE custody
25:39federal officials
25:41also barred him
25:42from going to his son's
25:43funeral
25:44these stories
25:44are barely
25:45just scratching the surface
25:46when it comes to
25:47all the families
25:48that have been impacted
25:48by this administration's
25:50mass deportation agenda
25:52a recent report
25:53by the Brookings Institute
25:54estimates that
25:54the total number
25:55of children
25:56affected by parental
25:57detention
25:57is around
25:59205,000
26:00the number of
26:01U.S. citizens
26:02children affected
26:03by this
26:03is about
26:04145,000
26:05Jose Contreras
26:06joins us now
26:08Jose it's great
26:09to have you with us
26:09and I'm so sorry
26:10this has happened
26:10to you
26:11but first of all
26:12happy Father's Day
26:13tell me
26:14what was it like
26:15just you know
26:16the first time
26:17holding your son
26:17when you were able
26:18to be reunited
26:18with your newborn
26:19after four months
26:20and hearing about it
26:21and then seeing
26:22your son Mateo
26:24it was one of the
26:25most beautiful moments
26:26of my life
26:26it's exactly why
26:28I continue to do
26:29what I do
26:29we continue to push
26:30forward with faith
26:31with dignity
26:32with resilience
26:33you know
26:34with perseverance
26:35which are
26:35pretty much
26:36the American values
26:37we've learned
26:38ever since we arrived
26:39in this country
26:41I'm so sorry
26:42Jose
26:42you've been renewing
26:44your DACA status
26:46regularly
26:46since 2014
26:48has it become harder
26:50under the Trump
26:50administration
26:51could you just explain
26:52to our viewers
26:53what it means
26:54to have DACA status
26:58having DACA
26:59gives us wings
27:00it allows us
27:01to be a part
27:02of the system
27:03it allows us
27:04to get integrated
27:05into the community
27:05every two years
27:06we have to check in
27:08and essentially
27:09run background checks
27:10across different
27:11platforms
27:12from the government
27:13so what that means
27:15for us is
27:16we run this cycle
27:17right
27:18that usual citizens
27:19don't usually
27:19have to go through
27:20and pretty much
27:23means that
27:24our life
27:24is in this
27:25constant surveillance
27:26so you have to
27:28take into consideration
27:29setting the example
27:31of living life
27:32responsibly
27:34can you talk us
27:35through what it
27:36was like
27:37to be separated
27:38from your wife
27:39as she was
27:41giving birth
27:41as you couldn't
27:43be there
27:43for this very
27:44important moment
27:45in your family's
27:47lives
27:48what was that
27:49like for you
27:50so for once
27:52imagine right
27:53the agony
27:54of being torn
27:55apart from the
27:55life you know
27:56right
27:57they handcuffed
27:58placed on a plane
27:59dropped off in a
28:00country you don't
28:01know
28:01you barely remember
28:02so it's
28:04this great sense
28:05of grief
28:06and powerlessness
28:07you know
28:08we can get robbed
28:09of foundational
28:10moments with our
28:10families
28:12pretty much
28:13you can never
28:13retain them
28:14so
28:14it's a forced
28:16disconnection
28:17and there's a
28:18lingering void
28:19that's left behind
28:20in our hearts
28:23Jose
28:23I know things
28:24are still
28:25very challenging
28:26for you
28:26and as I understand
28:27and correct me
28:28if I'm wrong
28:28we understand
28:29that you lost
28:30your job
28:30while you
28:31were detained
28:32and I'm wondering
28:33if you can talk to us
28:34about how that has
28:35complicated things
28:36for you
28:37and the fear
28:38you're living in fear
28:39of potentially being
28:40deported again
28:40what is that like
28:43how are you coping
28:43with that dual reality
28:47it's hard
28:48because it's something
28:49that you know
28:49I like to tell
28:51my former boss
28:52I wasn't fired
28:53and I
28:54and I didn't quit
28:55so it's something
28:57that now
28:57it affects me
28:58financially
28:58my economy
29:00my family's
29:01financial status
29:02is in shambles
29:02so we're just
29:03trying to
29:04recuperate
29:05get everything
29:06back on track
29:07and you know
29:07I'm really grateful
29:08for the second chance
29:09of being able
29:10to be here once again
29:10in order to get
29:12my life back together
29:14what reason did
29:15immigration agents
29:16give for why
29:17you were being
29:18arrested and detained
29:19given that you had
29:20DACA protections
29:23yeah so
29:24my DACA protections
29:25were specifically
29:27for you know
29:28so that they
29:29wouldn't have to
29:29detain me
29:30and deport me
29:31once again
29:32it's an order
29:34of removal
29:35from 2004
29:37so you know
29:38I've had DACA
29:40for more than
29:40a decade now
29:41and like I said
29:42every two years
29:43we have to check in
29:43so the biggest question
29:46is right now
29:49so you're saying
29:50that the government
29:52basically
29:53you were following
29:54the rules
29:54the government
29:55took you
29:56they spent money
29:57to do so
29:57they took you
29:59to a place
29:59where you had
30:01no background
30:02and had not lived
30:03in ages
30:05and incurred cost
30:08and then had to come back
30:10do you have any
30:11just spitball estimate
30:14of how much effort
30:16how much money
30:17this cost
30:19it was taxpayer dollars
30:20to take you
30:22and then to ship you
30:24to Honduras
30:25even though
30:25you were playing
30:26by the rules
30:28yeah so
30:29my journey
30:30is only a testament
30:31right
30:32that even
30:32if we adhere
30:33to the rules
30:34the compliance
30:35that we have to follow
30:36is still no guarantee
30:37against a system
30:38that could still
30:39break its promise
30:41financial wise
30:42I am not sure
30:43how much
30:45Homeland Security
30:46has invested
30:46into this whole ordeal
30:48so I couldn't even
30:50get a number
30:51I don't know
30:54I don't have
30:54a perfect answer
30:55for you
30:55no no
30:57I just was
30:58marveling at the sheer
30:59wastefulness
31:00of it all
31:01and the human cost
31:03and want to wish you
31:04a happy Father's Day
31:05on this day
31:06and I'm glad
