John Krasinski discusses the difficult but narratively crucial decision to kill off Betty Gabriel's character in 'Jack Ryan,' explaining how it raised the geopolitical stakes for the series.
Transcript
00:00I mean, Betty was so good and is so good in the movie.
00:04She's such a huge character, but I think that what I loved most was the stakes that always
00:09came in the movies that I grew up on.
00:11You know what I mean?
00:12There's always super high stakes in Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present
00:16Danger.
00:16And I think that, you know, at some point, the feeling of how to progress this further
00:22is to not only lose someone that we all care about, but to lose someone that is a massive
00:27chess piece on the geopolitical board.
00:28And so once you threaten and or more than threaten the director of the CIA, all of a sudden
00:36the entire world dynamic shifts.
00:37And that's what we needed from the movie.
00:40And so that's why we made the decision to do that.
00:42But honestly, it was with great remorse because I would have loved to work with Betty for years
00:49to come.
00:49So we'll just have to find something else to do.
